I agree. It was a cool concept but it's just not practical. They should have just made C-3P0 and R2-D2 as a player piece (standing side by side in the icon pose used for a lot of Star Wars advertising).

"Hey, Billy likes Star Wars, let's get him this!"

The road to bad gaming is paved with good intentions, or so they say...

It's Trivial Pursuit. You know how to play, even if you don't admit it. The difference with this is that the questions are all about the Star Wars (the original trilogy -- the good ones).

Sound interesting? Unfortunately, the "trivial" isn't trivial enough. It's either astoundingly easy or ridiculously complicated. Most questions are really really easy, especially is you've seen the movies a few times.

On the plus side, the bits were cool: the pawns were little metal figures and the die is an electronic R2D2 figure that displays the number on an LED screen. If I found the game in a Goodwill, I think I'd buy it for a buck to get that R2D2. Otherwise, pass on this game because I think the more a Star Wars fan you are, the more disappointed you're going to be. (My rating: 2)

Thread: Re: Saga DVD vs. Classic Trilogy vs. Episode I

As far as I know it's a brand new game, with six new categories, and more of a focus on problem solving than just having rote-learned all six movies. It's also on the whole six instead of just the original three - so it's GOT to have new questions for at least half. There may be a few double-ups, but I think it's new enough to be worth getting.

Thread: Saga DVD vs. Classic Trilogy vs. Episode I

I currently own the Star Wars Classic Trilogy Edition (1998), and I'm eager to buy the new Saga DVD Edition (2005). When I get the new one, should I throw out the old one? Were all of the questions from the Classic Trilogy game absorbed into the new Saga DVD game? Does anyone know where I could find this out?

Also, there's the rare Episode I Edition (1999). Does anyone know if these questions are unique, or if they were absorbed into the 2005 game as well?

I kind of suspect that the lazy folks over at Hasbro wouldn't make up totally new and unique questions for all three games, but I'm not sure where I can find this out. Anyone who can shed some light on this would be a godsend.

Thanks,
Czar

Thread: User Review

This game came to us as a Christmas present, and it was fun to play not because it was actually challenging but because we could all make fun of each other, repeatedly, for being such Star Wars Geeks.

Trivial Pursuit itself is so well known that there should be no need to review the game mechanics. The question is simply whether or not this version of the game, focused as it is purely on the classic Star Wars trilogy, is worth the money. Short Answer: No.

For us, it was fun simply because we already knew all the answers. But that also meant we had to change the rules so that answering a question correctly did NOT give us another turn. Otherwise, first player to go also got to win the game without anyone else taking a turn. The Star Wars trivia is that easy, at least for anyone who has seen the movies multiple times and invested any amount of time in memorizing names, characters, scripts, when specific music cues are played, how many troops can be transported by an AT-AT, the names of all the pieces in a standard game of Holo-chess, etc. For people who aren't so heavily invested in the films, some questions might be challenging, but not by much. Questions are often no more challenging than, "What color is Luke's lightsaber in 'A New Hope?'" or "What is the name of the bounty hunter that captures Han Solo?" Yes, they really are easy.

The game components are, admittedly, pretty cool. Each player gets a metal miniature figure (instead of a disk) of one of the main characters (Darth Vader usually gets chosen first), and the trivia chips are wedged into the figure's base. An electronic R2-D2 generates random numbers, rather than using "clunky old dice." And the board includes two "hyperspace" spaces, which can be used to jump to the other side of the board as a short-cut.

But beyond that, this game has extremely limited play value and appeal. A run-through of the game once or twice will pretty much convince any die-hard fan that the game was not a good way to spend $20. There are good Star Wars games out there - this ain't it.

I'm a Star Wars fan and I was VERY disappointed in this edition.

Probably 2/3 of the answers are one of the main characters. (Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Pricess Leia, Chewbacca, or Darth Vader)

There were probably a couple of dozen questions that I felt were worthy of being Trivial Pursuit questions. (an example of one is: "how many solar collectors are on the Millenium Falcon?")

I bought it prior to Episode I, and it had some card with preview questions and pictures, which were worth something at the time. (any info prior to the movie release was precious)

Overall, only the SW fans that need EVERYTHING should get this, otherwise pass on this one.
