Thread: Super Mario Bros

I've played this game only twice, yet I feel qualified to write a review, because with this game, twice in a lifetime is enough. To be fair, my 9yo son thought it was very cool, but his reviews are limited to "cool" or "sucks", and this is not his review :-).

This is a roll-and-move game with a cute board. Roll-and-move always feels strange to me now that I am used to bidding for movement points, or being given them, but it is not too bad in this game. The board is square, with a movement track around the outside. Inside opposite ends of the square are 3 rows of 6 bricks each (so there are 36 bricks on the board). I believe this is somewhat like the Mario game. Each player starts with 3 lives. Each player (two representing Mario, two representing Luigi) starts in a specific corner of the board, and has 3 lives. When you land on a square below a column of bricks, you remove the bottom brick from the column and do what it says. It can say "Lose a Life", "Gain a Life", "Turn Over a Brick", "Turn Over 3 Bricks", or give you 2 or 4 gold coins. You can cash in 6 gold coins for an additional life. Squares on the other 2 sides of the board (not under the bricks) are fairly boring. The most interesting allow you to take a shortcut across the middle of the board if you land on them exactly, or turn over a brick.

The advantage of turning over a brick is that you can see what you might run into should you land beneath that column. The downside is that since you can't much control where you go anyway, it doesn't matter whether you know or not. The advantage of the shortcuts is that when you land on them is the only time you have any control over where you go.

Once a column is cleared, you are able to climb upwards through the wall to the palace where the princess is held captive. You will arrive at one of four disks, each of which may or may not be the princess (one is the princess, three say "the princess is not here"). When you arrive at a disk, you turn it over. If it is the princess, you have rescued her and you win the game.

So, it's really quite a boring game. However the counters are quite reasonable quality, and my son really enjoys the theme. I have played very little Mario in my life, but I believe this game would appeal to a young Mario fan. I hope not to play it again, but I can imagine my son dragging it out occasionally when he has friends visiting.
