Thread: Looking for Help Starting a Club

Well, it's humbling (which I've learned comes about every day of the year as a teacher), but I'm to the point where I'm going to be looking to the goodness of other folks for some help. Let me explain:

I'm a teacher at a high school in Eastern Cincinnati that's been hit pretty hard by the economic crisis we're experiencing in the United States. Recently, the Ford plant, which provided jobs for some 800 workers, closed, making the economic situation even harder. As a result, the funding for extracurricular activities at our school is...limited. I teach journalism and as one of our first assignments I had the students "CSI" my car--that is, examine it for clues that would help them create questions for a mock press conference in order to learn more about me and to write one of their first articles. I, of course, had a ton of gaming stuff strategically placed in order to pique their interest. Little did I know that so many of my male students would be incredibly interested in Warhammer.

Long story short, I have about 12 high-risk boys that have expressed interest in a Warhammer club after school. For the uninitiated, high-risk basically means that these are boys with crappy home lives that we struggle to keep in school on a daily basis. The fact that these boys are interested in staying AT school, AFTER school in order to learn and play a game is a BIG deal. The problem come with our budget. I didn't foresee this being so popular, and as a result I didn't even fathom starting a club at the beginning of the year. As a result, when I start the club, I'll get zero funding from the district and asking the boys to pay is...questionable at best.

What I'm looking for is anyone that plays, played, or passingly painted Warhammer 40k. I'm trying to get enough units for about four (4) 1000 point armies of varying races (Space Marines, Eldar, Tyranid, Orks) so that the boys can try out some different armies and take a crack at painting different models. I have plenty of Space Marines, so that shouldn't be an issue. However, the other races I have significantly fewer of. I won an Eldar Battleforce at a recent tournament, so that amounts to my present Eldar. I have the 12 or so models of Tyranids from Battle for Maccrage and a Battleforce for the Tyranids. And I have two sets of Orks from the Black Reach box.

If you have anything you'd be willing to donate, my boys and I would greatly appreciate it. I understand that in these frustrating economic times that donations may be the last thing on the minds of many, but if you could provide even one model, it'd put me closer to the goal. If you're interested in donating, please send me a Geekmail. Again, thank you, and happy gaming!

Hopefully they can figure out a way to make the models cheaper and they could really get a lot of newplayers in with this edition

And what about access to all those back issues of great content?

I would be very sad if it´s been killed, and it would be stupid if all the backissues are inaccessible!

Thread: Re: 5th edition!?!

Taken from gwhobby.net, which has it again from some other sites:

Charge Response Move: The response move is exactly the same as the countercharge rule. Every unit gets it, but models that already have Countercharge (like Space Wolves) gain +1 Attack as if they had charged themselves.

Relentless USR: This applies mainly to bikes and terminators. You may move and fire heavy weapons and fire to full effect with rapid fire weapons and still charge.

Hit and Run USR: This is similar to the current rule but now you have to pass an initiative test to perform it.

Vehicles: Vehicle rules are apparantly identical to the leaked codex

"No-Argument" cover saves: Your opponent says what they think it is; if you disagree they still gets the cover save but with a –1 ~That's and interesting new concept for GW to throw into a ruleset.

Wound Allocation: This is performed per model (similar to Flames of War) exactly as listed in the leaked PDF. This can lead to the loss of key models within a unit.

No Retreat: Saves are limited to the amount of wounds caused (if you outnumber a fearless opponent 4:1 and you won the combat but only caused 1 wound you cause only an additional 1 wound; if you win and cause 5 wounds you only cause 4 wounds as your limited by how much you outnumber your opponent.)

Missions: Troops are the only scoring units but they count as scoring till the last man. They must be destroyed entirely to remove their scoring status.

There are 3 different deployment zones (Quarters, Deep and Shallow Long table Edges) and 3 different objectives (VPs, Take and Hold, Loot) means that there are 9 types of missions

Cover:
All cover is 4+
If you shooting through more than 2" of cover, then your target gets a cover save.
If there is a dispute about the majority being in or out of cover, thats when the cover save with the -1 comes in.

Line of Sight:
There are no height levels, all terrain is true LoS (even jungles and woods). They will need to be modeled appropriately if they are to block LoS.

Blast Weapons:
Blast weapons don't roll to hit, but always scatter D6" minus the BS of the firer. ~Yikes, watch out for Dark Reaper Exarchs!
All models under a blast template (including partials) are automatically hit.

Skimmers:
Skimmers only get cover saves if they move over 12".

Missions:
Scoring units must be BOTH Troops and Infantry (it is unknown if jump infantry count towards this). In any case it would appear that a pure Ravenwing army might have a hard time unless they draw a VP mission.
Killpoints are apparently out, being replaced by the standard VPs in certain missions.

Perils of the Warp:
Perils now causes an automatic wound, but invulnerable saves are allowed.

Monstrous Creatures:
Monstrous creatures now have the Move Through Cover USR instead of re-rolling the difficult terrain dice.
Monstrous creatures may only fire one weapon per turn.

~If that Monstrous creature only firing one weapon per turn pans out, that could be a nerf to balance out the nidzilla lists... The skimmers only gaining cover saves if they moved over 12" is yet another nail in the falcon coffin. So on balance 5th is shaping up to nerf skimmers of all types, drop the firepower of monstrous creatures, and increase the speed of infantry... Pretty interesting overall. What do you guys think?

5th Edition Rumour roundup

‘5th’ edition 40K is due for release in 2008 although we have conflicting reports about the release date, it’s going to be either summer or more probably autumn (GDUK 08).

There will be a new rulebook and new starter set which will be Orks vs marines, it will include both troops and vehicles (a marine dreadnought is likely and possibly others). The 3up grot seen at UKGD ’07 is also for the starter box.

Rumoured rules amendments

1. the addition of a ‘run’ option (similar to fleet but with a trade off to keep fleet special).
2. Improvements to the cover save rules.
3. Rending toned down (rending i.e. auto wound/no armour save on a 6 to wound & reduction in effectiveness against vehicles).
4. Template(Blast) weapons rules streamlined.
5. Sniper weapons rules amended (rending probable)
6. Close combat rules amended with a combat resolution phase similar to fantasy
7. Single vehicle damage table.
8. Vehicles without a WS in CC always get hit in the rear armour.
9. Vehicles able to ram
10. Other vehicle amendments
11. Mission rules changed in a similar manner to Apocalypse (no more Alpha, Gamma or Omega).
12. Only non vehicle non swarm troop choices are scoring units (Note I did not say infantry)
13. Vehicles types are adjusted (the rumoured skimmer nerf)

Overall the ruleset hasn’t changed dramatically but areas have been clarified, streamlined and in some cases brought closer to 2nd edition.

Shooting
-There's now a reason to have a BS higher than 5 (can we say 2+/5+?).
-All models friend or foe now block line of sight. Vehicles and Monstrous Creature can be targeted over intervening infantry.
-Area terrain does not block line of sight.
-All blast weapons now scatter. BS is still an important function of how far though.

Vehicles
-Defensive weapons on vehicles are now Str 4 and below.
--Skimmers Moving Fast is now a 5+ cover save. All Obscured Targets receive a cover save. No more "Hull Down."
-Dedicated transports can now carry any unit (subject to normal restrictions, i.e., no Terminators) and are no longer the deathtraps they have been (no entangling, just pinning).
-AP 1 weapons add +1 to the vehicle damage chart instead of doing as they do now.
-Ordinance weapons roll 2d6 and pick the highest on the vehicle damage table.

Miscellaneous
-Independent Character targeting restrictions have been eased.
-There is no IC protection any longer unless he is joined to a unit
-ICs within 2" of a unit automatically join it.
-Dark Eldar are not gone, as they're mentioned in the rules (their jetbikes DO get the 6" assault).
-Frag grenades operate as plasma grenades now.
-Monstrous creatures get move through cover, not a reroll.
-Saving Throws are now made AFTER wound allocation. This means you could still roll all your generic troopers as a group, but will need to roll for each special model (serg, heavy weapons, etc) one by one. Torrent of Fire is gone.

Missions
-The missions are different enough that Troops only counting as scoring isn't as big a deal as it would be today.
-Victory points are calculated differently in "cleanse" style missions (points calculated depending on the FOC slot the dead unit took up).
-Scouts and Infiltrators can now try to outflank the enemy and come on as reserves from a different board edge.
-Deepstrike is the same, but if you can't place all the models, you roll on the "deepstrike mishap" table (50% you're dead, 50% you place yourself anywhere you like).

Overall, the rules look a lot more detailed. Not as detailed as 2nd edition, but now there's a difference between a guy standing on the roof of a building and a guy standing in the basement. Actual line of sight matters a lot more than "pretend" line of sight now.

Thread: Eldar Nightspinner Conversion

Like some of you, my slow descent into gaming was hastened along by Warhammer 40,000. What initially attracted me to the game was the hobby aspect of modeling and painting. The gamer in me, however could not resist actually playing the game. And here it is... 14 years since I played my first game of 40k. In that time I have put together countless toy soldiers, painted a few, and done my fair share of conversion projects. Here I will be reviewing one of my first (and still favorite) projects....my Forgeworld Nightspinner Conversion.

One of the first resin kits released by Forgeworld for the Eldar was the Nightspinner (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/nightspinner.htm). This kit is simply a conversion kit and requires you to buy the standard Games Workshop Eldar Falcon model as a base. Although there were no rules for it at the time, I could not resist putting this together. (Rules are now available for this model)

While building my Nightspinner, I decided I wanted a little variety from the standard kit.

The kit includes:
2 Cannons
2 Cannon Pivot Covers
2 Cannon Muzzles
Cannon Mount
Cannon Rest
Turret Base
Rear Hull Plate
2 Rear Hull Vents
2 Cannon Fins

Remember the Epic version? It has cool looking rear fins and twin-linked shuriken cannons under the front hull (rather than the catapults now present).

Also, the Nightspinner Cannon itself is essentially a larger version of the Doomweaver…. which derived from the Warp Spiders' Death Spinners….. so I thought that it would be cool to make the gunner a Warp Spider. After all, who else would be more in-tune with the way those cannons would work.

Overall, the parts were much easier to clean and prepare for assembly that the FOrgeworld Waveserpent kit pieces. I would like to note however that there were still a couple of pieces with considerable mis-matched mold lines. Also, the Cannon Fin pieces are very fragile, so be careful. Mine had what appeared to be too-much extra resin, and I had to sculpt them a bit with my knife. There were several large bubbles in the resin on my cannons themselves, which required a bit of filler. I'm now convinced Forgeworld has very little quality control. Apparently they feel that charging full price for a mis-cast resin piece is okay as long as you can still make out the basic shape of the part.

After spending about 45 minutes cleaning the pieces with an exacto knife, I wiped everything down with a wet cloth. This is important if you want your paint to stick well as it removes all the microscopic resin dust and mold release that may remain on the pieces. I was now ready to assemble.....

The Warp Spider Gunner:

Rather than sculpt a warp spider helmet on the regular gunner, I decided to use the Warp Spider Exarch. This was the best choice since his backpack is a separate piece. I started by removing his arms just below the knives (see below). I was careful not to cut the helmet extensions off in the process. Once that was done, I cut the torso from the waist to get the basic body I would work from.

Since the cockpit seats in the tank already have legs molded into them, my next step was to make the torso fit properly in the seat. Right off the bat I noticed that the body was a bit too bulky, and the helmet was too tall for the cockpit hatch to close. Using a small metal file, I filed down the back until the body fit nicely into the seat. Next, I had to figure out what to do with the helmet. Once again I turned to my file. I carefully filed away the helmet while keeping the conical shape. Eventually I ended up with a shorter helmet that fit nicely into the cockpit. Luckily, it still looked like the signature Warp Spider helmet due to the shape.

Actually fitting the gunner into place was more of an ordeal than I had originally thought. First, I placed the control panel/arm piece into the cockpit for reference. Then I slid the gunner into place. It didn't really work because the exarch's body was asymmetrical and the left arm got in the way. I carefully trimmed the left arm off at the elbow and re-seated the gunner. An almost perfect fit! In order to make sure he was seated properly, I used green stuff to fill in the gaps between the cut off left arm and the body and to fill in the waist area (the exarch's body is a little too short , so this helps him get seated properly).

The Fins:

To me, this is the feature that really defines the Nightspinner. I mean…you can mount just about any weapon on top of a Falcon hull and call it something new, but the addition of extra body pieces really makes the tank stand out as something new and different. Look at the Wave Serpent…. the extended crew compartment and wave generator really give it a distinct look. That's what I was hoping to accomplish with the Nightspinner fins.

Since I don't have an Epic Nightspinner lying around, I pulled out some of my old Annuals and found a picture. Using this as my base, I enlarged the picture on a copy machine until I had the same scale as the current Falcon. From there I traced a template of one of the fins.

Using my paper template, I traced out the fin on a piece of thick plasticard, then flipped the template over to trace the other fin. Cutting the fins out proved to be a challenge since I was rather inexperienced in plasticard. I found the best way to do it was to score the plastic, and the bend it to break away the pieces. In the end, I ended up with 2 fairly symmetrical fins. I noticed that the fins, while thick, were not really thick enough to fit in with the rest of the Falcon body. To solve this issue, I cut another set of fins. These were smaller than the first set, and would be glued to the underside, forming an inverted lip around the edges. On the under-fins, I also made sure that the section where they would attach to the body was much longer and wider than the upper-fin. This proved to be a very good move when it came time for assembly.

The Falcon has distinctive lines along the edges of the armour plating. I wanted to continue this with my fins. First I traced the armour ridge lines from my paper template onto the plastic fins. This showed me exactly where I needed to carve the grooves into my armoured fins. It took awhile for me to find the appropriate tool for the job. A traditional plastic-scorer is way too sharp for the wide grooves I wanted. Instead, I used the tip of my v-shaped metal file. Running the tip along the lines lightly gave me a good starting point. From there I slowly scraped away at the lines until the grooves were an appropriate depth and width. I caution you to work slowly on this part. I slipped a few times, scratching lines into unwanted areas. These later had to be filled in with green stuff or paint to hide the error.

Since the under side of the Eldar tanks have a small lip around the edges, my next step was to fill in the underside of my new fins with green stuff. I carefully rolled out thin strands of green stuff and applied them around the edges of each fin, making sure to create a large lip. Once this was dry, I used an exacto knife to cut a nice straight line along the edge of the lip. The intent here was to create a uniform looking lip. Then came the hard part. Green stuff is not that easy to sand…. so I spent an hour or so sanding down the lip on each fin to a decent height. This also allowed me to even out the green stuff as much as possible. I'm no expert here, and a close inspection of the fins will bear that out…. but I am really happy with the result considering I had no idea what I was doing.

Gluing the fins in place was a bit of a challenge. I spent at least a half-hour lining things up and determining how I was going to fit them into the right place. My savior came in the form of a smelly chemical called Zip Kicker. This wonderful compound instantly hardens polystyrene glues. (Caution: The combining of these 2 items causes an exothermic reaction, and can actually burn quite a bit if you get it on your fingers. It also melts plastic if used in large quantities, so be careful.) Covering the overhanging portion of the under-fin in glue, I lined up the fin on the Falcon body and added a quick drop of Zip Kicker. This held it in place perfectly, and allowed me to fill in with extra glue (I wanted to make sure the fins wouldn't break off).

After gluing both fins in place, I lined up the body to the bottom of the tank. I wanted to make sure that the finished product would have a tight fit. Part of the extended under-fin was preventing the top and bottom halves of the body from fitting together tightly, so I cut away a piece from each one. This did the trick, and the result was very pleasing.

The Shuriken Cannons:

The final converted piece for my Nightspinner was the under-hull turret. The current model has the twin-linked shuriken catapults like on the Falcon and Wave Serpent. Although the Imperial Armour rules do not allow you to upgrade the Nightspinner's catapults to cannons, I thought this would be a nice added touch. After all, the Epic version did have cannons.

My first concern was that if I ever wanted to use this thing in a tournament, it would need to be WYSIWYG. So, I decided that I would need to do the traditional catapults, plus the cannons, and have them switchable. To accomplish this I bought a set of very tiny Rare Earth Magnets from Radio Shack. Much to my surprise, they were perfectly sized to fit in the small under-hull hole in the Falcon body. I attached the other magnet on the top of the actual turret by cutting off the little X-shaped piece and replacing it with a magnet. (This method is so good, I've decided to do it with all of my Eldar tanks. This will allow me to arm them as needed without having to make extra models.)

The most challenging part of this construction was creating the actual Cannon Turret. For this I used 2 plastic Shuriken Cannons from the Vyper sprue, a piece of copper wire, the turret piece from the Falcon sprue, some green stuff and a small section of old sprue (the fat outer edge of the Falcon sprue).

First, I glued a piece of copper wire into the small hole of the turret, forming sort of a T-shape. The wire is where I intended to hook the cannons in place. Before placing the cannons, I needed a small spacer piece on each side that would prevent the cannons from touching when mounted. Also, this helped to bulk up the turret, giving it a more imposing appearance. For the spacers, I took the old sprue piece, and drilled a small hole straight into it. Once the hole was about as deep as I could get it, I carefully sliced off 2 small 1-1.5mm wide pieces (see pic above). I slipped one piece onto either side of the wire, and glued in place, right up against the turret.

At this point I took the time to paint my cannons and the turret piece. This proved to be a good move as it would be hard to reach all of the details once glued together. Once painted, I attached the cannons, one on either side. At this point its important to clip your wire so that it does not extend past the outer rim of the gun mounting hole. I filled in the mounting holes on either side with a teeny tiny bit of green stuff, which was later painted to match the cannon.

The Finished Product:

The only additional modeling that was required, was to re-drill the base mounting hole. I moved it back about an inch to help account for the added weight of the Nightspinner Cannons and rear fins. Because the fins dip down at a slight angle, it was necessary to mount this on the taller of the two base options provided with the Falcon. Looking at it now, it could probably be mounted a bit higher, or could use a second stand to help stabilize it. I may do this in the future, but its only a knit-picky little issue, and the piece is totally playable as-is.

I chose to use my army's purple & white paint scheme for this piece. As you can see, the added rear fins really help distinguish this as a unique vehicle. My only possible addition will be to fill in some Eldar Runes on the white armour plates…but I don't have time for it right now.

Pilot

Gunner

Nightspinner with Cannons

Nightspinner with Catapults

Thread: Qeustion about modeling an All-Close-Combat-Dreadnought

I've been wanting to invest in a Space Marines Dreadnought for some time now, but the only reason I haven't got one already is because I want my dread to have both hands close-combat.
Games-Workshop's online store is lacking in information about the plastic molds; now, I know for a fact that Blood Angles' Furioso Dreadnought is like what I'm looking for, but I really don't like GW's metal models, so my question is whether I can assemble an ALL-PLASTIC dread with two close-combat hands (is there a dreadnought close-combat right hand)?

Well, GW likes their control a little bit more than they like goodwill?

Perhaps they feel that eventual revenues of a coming 40K movie would be lessened, or perhaps they want _their_ vision of the dark milennium to be the first one viewed by fans?
Thread: Re: Hullo

I'm a big miniatures-gaming fan, but it is true that I am not a fan of GW, Warhammer, 40k, or any of their products. I'm not really a fan of that many of the new "pay through the nose to collect 'em all" miniatures games, either.

Now, as a miniatures gamer, I have to acknowledge that, when it comes to miniatures gaming, Games Workshop wins. Okay? I said it. Ick. They are the Microsoft of mini's. They are the public perception of miniatures gaming. When the average Joe thinks of miniatures gaming, they think of Warhammer (if at all). They are the biggest game. They are the second biggest game. They are the biggest company. If you want to play the game that everybody else is playing, your best bet is simply to buy a Warhammer army.

But that doesn't make it the best miniatures game.

The rules are cludgy. They keep getting cludgier.

Part of the problem is the one-two punch of the GW money-making model, in which they force you to update/upgrade/spend in order to stay current. If you want to play, you have to pay. That means that your army must constantly evolve, and that means that the rules are constantly changing. Any rules system that is constantly changing is going to get cludgy. Do this for years on end, and it is going to get bent out of shape. It started out from an extremely simplistic mechanism to start with, so modifying it and modifying it over the years means that you've wound up with something that, in the end, seems bound together with bailing twine and spit, ready to go "sproing" if you breathe on it wrong.

... and you pay money for the luxury of playing!

But that's okay. It is all okay!

Because there are options. There are lots of other miniatures games out there. There are newer miniatures games which experiment with other mechanics, which try out other ways of doing things, and don't root their base mechanic in a 25-year-old engine. There are older miniatures games which streamline things, and make them simpler. There are tons of free rules sets, just aching to be tried out by gamers who are willing to give 'em a shot.

The problem is that, in most people's minds, miniatures games and GW/Warhammer are one-and-the-same. Pay-to-play is the norm. It is the way things should be. It is part of the hobby, for a lot of people.

So miniatures games get a bad rap because of their association with ... well, with bad miniatures games companies, and with bad miniatures games!

But oh, the joy when a miniatures gamer discovers that there are plastic historical figures to be had, 40 figures in 15 poses for 6 dollars. Oh, the smile on a miniatures gamer's face when they discover again the fun from a free rules set, where if they don't like the rules they can simply walk away from them, never play them again, and be out absolutely not one penny!

There are all sorts of cool alternatives that people are coming up with (check out Worldworksgames' Wormhole - a print-and-play starship combat miniatures game where you literally make your own miniatures, never having to invest hundreds of dollars again!).

If we could get the concept of miniatures game to divorce from the GW/Warhammer hegemony, then I think that more people would enjoy mini's games ...

... and old Warhammer players might actually let their frustration over GW/Warhammer rest in peace.

That would be a good start.

Chimera's are excellent vehicles that can be used as transports for a wide range of units ( Ogryn, Stromtroopers, Armored Fist et cetera ) So, if you move away from liking Armored Fists you can still find a place for the Chimera. It also has the added bonus of looking exceptionally cool on the battle field.

If you really like Armored fist you could go with motorized infantry company and add more chimera-squads. It is a fun army to build, paint and play and it looks sharp on the table-top.

Its hard to go wrong with a Basilisk. It is an excellent tank. I'm partial to the Leman Russ but it serves a different role than Basilisk -main battle tank vs. semi-fragile heavy fire support.

Which are better?

You can play Steel Legion ( or any models for that matter ) as "Vanilla Guard" or you could

1) Use the codex version that offers specific disciplines
2) Use custom disciplines to create your own guard list and use Steel Legion models.

I'd second the recommendation for Battle of MacCragge

A) good number of models and nifty terrain for the price
B) portable rule book

Witchhunter/demon hunter lists are a superb way to build an IG or SM army over time.

It gives you a chance to expermiment with troops and find what models/combinations of troops and/or armor that works for you.

IG is an extemely flexible army and as such, it can be mind blowing when you first sit down and look at the codex and try to figure out how to compose your army.

Buy models you like. As you play over time you'll get a sense for what you like and what you'd like more of. Personally I'd start with a couple platoons, an HQ squad and perhaps a Leman Russ and a Sentinel. That should work nicely with your witchhunter army and you can add things like:

Stormtroopers, rough riders et cetera to suite your needs after a few games.

NOT that they are really superb...

Back on topic, if you are a beginner, I would not recommend the combined WH/IG force nor the WH/SM combined force. They are more difficult to play and will cost you more cash. Also, be sure you read the codexes and are absolutely sure that the combos you buy are legal! I would recommend getting around 500 points in one army, probably Space Marines or IG, and learning the ropes on that. From there you can start adding witch hunters or whatever.

To give you an idea of why the swap army might not be a great idea, in the long run with 40k you are going to own a lot of stuff. Even 200 points in incompatible units will be $40-$100 dollars wasted.

Think of it this way: You buy 300/200/200 WH/IG/SM. You can field 500 points. You buy 700 points of one army. You can field 700 points. It seems like six of one and half a dozen of the other now but your budget will thank you later. I know the alienhunter and witchunter codexes feel like they offer a lot of flexibility, but every codex is full of flexibility.

He won't be able to use the bonus from that specific marker though.

If this is the way you go with it for equipment I would highly recommend a Target Lock for him so he can fire at a different target then the squad (to light up the opposing transport for example).

Thread: Tau Markerlights and Markerlight Drones

I've just started a small Tau army. At this point I have an XV8 Battlesuit commander and an XV8 gaurd, and a good number of Firewarriors and Gun Drones. Most of these I got off Ebay.

Anyhow, I've been reading what I think are the important parts of the Codex to get a feel for how I need to use my troops as well as what I might want to add at some point.

Question: How do the markerlights and markerlight drones work for the Tau?

I get that a marker token gets put on an enemy. Among other things this can be used to boost the BS (balistic skill) of other troops which greatly increases their chance to hit.

So a secondary question, are the Tau Pathfinders and the Markerlight Drone that comes with the XV25 Stealth suit team the only way for me to get and use markerlights?

I'm sure it would help if I read the codex and the big rule book cover to cover but I've been trying to find just the most relevent information first. Thanks for you help.

I was going to use the IG for my fast attack and half of my troop options, and the Witch Hunters for heavy support and troops. What do HQ units do?

Although, because of the ways armies stack against each other, should I make a force of SM of equal points to the IG so that I have more flexibility? ie, bring 300 pts of Witch Hunters, and then 200 pts of IG wich could be swapped for 200 pts of SM between games(depending on the opponents?)

I'm thinking of making an army, but need to know what kind of models to purchase.

The short answer is no.

The standard scenario requires an HQ and two troops as compulsory choices. Everything else is optional.

Fast Attack units and transports for troops typically have strong strategic value in most scenarios. This will vary by army. Some armies have troops that move quickly ( nids have fleet and long charge ranges, eldar are fleet) so they don't necessarily benefit from inclusion of transports for mobility: which is important in many scenarios where you want to quickly get objectives.

In some armies the line between elites and heavies and elites and fast attack blur. Some armies, particularly space marines, have incredibly flexible troops. It isn't uncommon to see a tournament army composed of an hq with transport and 6 space marine tactical squads with Rhinos. This particular army is fun in pick up games and is also strongly thematic (if that matters)

What army are you thinking of building? Its easier to give salient advice if you narrow the field a bit.
