Thread: now at Boardspace.net

Traboulet/Kuba/Akiba (all the same game under different names) is now online at Boardspace.net. Early adopters may encounter a bug or two, but spread the word to the faithful.

Traboulet has had a rough time in the marketplace (see http://traboulet.free.fr/pages_en/Historique_en.htm) but I really hope to see it back.

Thread: Re: House rule

We play with the multi-push rule as written, however we play with the House Rule that in the final scoring you get 1 point for every red marble pushed off plus 1 point for every opponents marble pushed off! This really makes it a better game. Believe it!

Tried the "one-push" version...game takes much longer and loses a little of the uniqeness it had when you could take multiple turns in a row. I greatly prefer my variant above and will play that way hereafter.

Thread: Re: Variant multi-push rule

That sounds like a rather interesting compromise between the original rules and the "one push" variant. (Personally, I think "one push" makes for a great game, and no longer play the original.) Your variant certainly seems like it would allow some clever combos. I'll have to give it a try next time I play.

Thread: Variant multi-push rule

I played multiple times this past weekend with a slight variant of the push-as-much-as-you-can rule. If you push one marble off the edge, you get another move, but you can't push the same marble twice in one turn.
This allowed us to set up multiple edge pushes in one turn, but still not put the game out of reach for the opposing player.
I have yet to try other variants (including the original rule!) but this worked quite well.

Thread: Re:Question of rules on Extra Turn

groven (#70269),
Very late reply, but was just cruising through the game entries.

I've still only played a handful of games, but even as beginners, without the bonus move, games probably took all of 10 minutes. I could see that perhaps with two very experienced players, it could get a bit long, as both avoid giving anything up, but that's probably true of most any abstract.

We haven't found a first-player advantage thus far without the bonus move. With the bonus, it seemed like there was a tiny set of options for the first several moves and that, with experience, one or two optimal sequences would appear and make it far too scripted. But again, this is al based on a considerably limited amount of experience with either version.

Thread: Re:Question of rules on Extra Turn

GaryP (#69451),

If you allow the "bonus" moves, the game seems very short, particularly between unexperienced players (3 minutes with my children !)

But if you disallow them, isn't the game far too long ?

Another question : the first player seems to have an overwhelming advantage, is it true ?

Thread: Re:Question of rules on Extra Turn

groven (#69423),
You can continue making moves until you are no longer able to push a marble off the board. Also note that it states that you can choose a different one of your own marbles to push for each of these consecutive turns.

As you'll see in the previous thread and people's ratings' comments, most of us have chosen to disallow any "bonus" moves. I think this makes for a much more engaging game, but try out both ways to see what you prefer.

Thread: Question of rules on Extra Turn

Kuba is an excellent game but there is a point unclear in the rules.

How many marbles can I remove from the board during the same turn ?

Is it a maximum of 3 ?

The first turn to remove the first opponent's marble, then the second turn to remove another one marble (if possible), and then the last third one (if possible).

Can I then go on and remove if possible a fourth and a fifht marble durind the same turn ? And even more ?

Thread: Re:House rule

Moon Knight (#64929),

I would agree that "idiotic" is far too strong an adjective. However, I do very much prefer the single-turn version. It is a lot more forgiving while giving MANY more options for play, in terms of countering or even intercepting scoring lines. There are many more great decisions to be made, such as wether to push your own marble into a scoring push to sacrifice it in lieu of allowing the opponent another red. The game length is increased, but it is still a short game. I think we generally finish within 10 minutes.

A friend and I played abstracts for a few hours last weekend: Yinsh, Zertz, Dvonn, Kuba, then more Yinsh. With the single-turn rule, we thought Kuba ranked very close to our favorites from the Gipf series. It certainly accompanies them well.

Thread: Re:House rule

rdsmith (#8102),

I have to disagree. The rules as printed aren't idiotic. Yes the game plays quicker, but for many of us that's not a bad thing. After a few plays you learn how to prevent your opponent from running away with large scoring pushes, or you forfeit one for a favorable set up to give you the winning seven.

rdsmith (#8102),

I too started off playing Kuba without the extra turn rule. I did not realize that was the official rule till I bought the computer version. I have implemented Kuba without the extra turn rule as Kubatoo on the Zillions of Games site.

Thread: Re:House rule

rdsmith (#8102),
It seems that this is a common reaction. The first couple of times I played I missed that rule. When I read the rules again and found out how it's supposed to be played, I was shocked. The few times I've bothered playing with the rules as printed the game was either over within a few turns or locked up as both players were afraid to make a move. If you ignore that idiotic rule it becomes a decent game. How this could get past the designer(s) I have no idea.

Thread: House rule

An excellent abstract game with little down time and a great feel when pushing the marbles around. However, if you follow the rule that states that you can continue your turn if you push off a marble, the game ends far TOO quickly as points are racked up very quickly. We play that you are allowed only one push per turn, regardless. This helps prevent runaway scoring, and the game length is just right -- About 20 minutes.
