Thread: Re: Rules question about Pokeballs

The rules seem to state that if you choose to play a pokeball (before rolling the die) you should stick with the consequences (good or bad,) thus you should add x.

However, this being a kids game, and since the game can drag, we play as you do. We add (or not) as is convenient to us.

Thread: In a game we must defend, POKEMON!

POKEMON! Yay, remember Pokemon?! I do, and I was pretty excited to find this copy at a thrift store complete for .50. That's right, fiddy cents amigo.

I knew this would be one my slower brother would be able to play with my other brother since he so regularly, bitterly watches us play powergrid and tigris and the like so I snatched it up and he was excited to be able to sit at a table with me, my other brother and my girlfriend.

This game caught a lot of flack on this site, but I'm here to defend it. My thesis? It's not SO bad! and for a game like this, that's good enough.

Components
Four plastic ashes. Dissapointing that it's not Ash from Evil dead, and dissapointed that there weren't more trainers. 150 pokemon! all on little pog shaped cardboard cicles. Pretty cool little pieces actually. The board is very nice and colourful and has all the cities from the show. There's a mystery dungeon space but you can't go in it. Cest la vie. It's a really nice board game actually, for what it is.

Score 4/7 pikachus.

Gameplay
The big easy here. You roam around the board which has at any time about 50 face down pokemon chips. You land on a chip, you get a chance to catch him. You catch him and you add him to your diaboliqual pokemon army and eventually take them to the indigo platuea for the final showdown to become a MASTER TRAINER something YOU can do in an hour that they couldn't do on the show for 6 seasons.
Not too much else here. you can fight and trade with other trainers, though it rarely happens as no one wants to. Some event cards force fights and trades but it's all in good fun until someone has to trade their evolved Blastoise for a useless nidorina and the tempers flare.

The game caught a lot of flack for being frustrating and long, but in our three plays it ended in about 40-45 minutes each time with one of us beating the master trainer on the first go-round the board.

This is a good game if you find yourself gaming with young ones, even if the buzz of the show is wearing off. It's easy to learn, play, and win. Good fun for everyone! Just don't look for something that isn't there ie. strategy/depth. relax and play a game

Score 6/10 shiny pokemon

Shelf Life
Almost as important as gameplay. The game itself is simple fun, but how often can you stand to play one of these games whose nature is repetitive. Well, you get no say in what you collect so theres no strategy at all. Naturally gamers wont want to play something like this, but i can see myself putting on the table once a month with the young ones and all of us having fun.

Score 4/11 trainer badges

Final score 18/28 episodes back to back

So there you have it. Not such a bad little game, haven't experienced a session so long I didn't want to play it. Wouldn't mind playing again soon. Like the way it looks. Like the end game. Don't like the simplicity, but when you're playing with kids, it's doesn't matter what you like anyway. Happy hunting!

Thread: Newbie against a Veteran

Well I recently won a Pokemon Master Trainer at the geek auction because I had picked one up at a garage sale and it had missing components. I also thought it would be a game I could get my nephew (now 19) to play as he claims to be a master at the game. He apparently played it a lot while growing up but has not had a copy in many years.

In the beginning of the game I was was on a roll winning all the battles and collecting item cards like they were going out of style. But the master soon turned the tables on me and caught a lot of major Pokemon, stole all my item cards and generally had his way with me.

Next thing I know he is at Indigo Plateau and I am thinking "how on earth does he think he will succeed up there with what he has showing?". It turns out I had been mistaken in how he had described the rules and totally misinterpreted what was needed to go to Indigo Plateau. When I finally figured it out I was racing my way there but to no avail. He drew the weakest trainer and had attack bonus cards of 5 and 4. Even so he needed two time machines to succeed.

I had entered this game thinking I would never play it again. However, he really enjoyed it and I did not find it half bad. Next time I may not spend so much time trying for all the evolutions though.

Thank you.

I've passed in this several times, because I did not see the appeal. My 5 y.o. has now started playing Pokemon CCG, and we've also picked up some of the videos. I picked up Pokémon Jr. Adventure Game: Pokémon Emergency!, though we have not played it yet.

I would have picked up the board game next time I saw it if it wasn't for this review.

I would have to agree. I play with my daughter and we use dad "abbreviated" rules to make this some fun.

One of the main problems is the final battle. It is almost impossible to beat. You need the max attack booster cards and an evolved pokemon.

Either one of these is hard to do, much less both. I can only play this game when my daughter begs me, which happens from time to time.

Thread: instructions?

I bought this at a garage sale and it seems to be 100 percent complete but without instructions. The back of the box doesn't list any instructions in its list of contents. Is it missing rules or am I expected to just learn how to play?

Thread: User Review

Pokemon Master Trainer is a game where from two to six players traipse around the land, picking up Pokemon creatures, and finally getting into a battle with a Master Trainer. If victorious, that player wins, and is the Master Trainer.

Bits

The bits in this are OK. The main character in the TV show is Ashe. There are six differently colored little Ashe markers. The board is large, and rather cheaply made. The tokens that represent the Pokemon creatures are made of durable cardboard. The cardboard tokens are placed, face down, on the board. There are small recesses in the board to facilitate this. While there is nothing spectacular in this box, there is likewise nothing to really criticize, either.

Three out of four

Rulebook and Rules

Basically, the player rolls a dice, and decides where they want to go. Once they move their marker, the cardboard Pokemon token they landed on is turned over, revealing a creature. Another roll of the dice determines if the creature was caught. If so, the token is taken by the player. The next player then takes their turn. Once a player achieves a certain power rating, they may enter into combat with a master trainer. If victorious against a master trainer, the player thus becomes one himself, and wins the game.

There are some other rules, like picking up items, etc., but that’s the game: a dice fest.

The rulebook is fine, as far as that goes. Hasbro does its best with this game, but the problem with the rulebook is the rules. The rules are badly incomplete. I get the feeling there is a game in here somewhere that is not reflected by the rulebook. The rules are both inadequate and incomplete.

An example of inadequate rules: when two trainers land on the same square, they battle. When my sons and I play, we find it rare when both parties actually WANT to battle. The inadequacy of the rules is that it is never actually stated exactly if they MUST battle.

An example of incomplete rules: on each cardboard token, there are a series of numbers. These numbers indicate a creature’s power. However, there are two sets of numbers. The rules don’t exactly indicate which set of numbers to use. I got the feeling that the two sets of numbers apply in different circumstances, but it is never spelled out.

There are more examples of each of these problems, so it is pretty clear to me that this game was rushed to take advantage of the Pokemon craze beginning in 1998. This game was released in 1999.

A major problem with the rules is that if a player captures all creatures within a line of creatures (for example, both a Pikachu and a Raichu), the stronger creature receives a power bonus. However, there are so many creatures, and they are so hard to get, that these bonuses almost never apply.

This is further complicated by the fact that an entire class of creatures is only accessible during the beginning of the game. If a player starts the game by rolling a couple sixes, then that player is probably not going to get that bonus during the entire game. If this bonus is nearly impossible to get, why have it?

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.

One out of four

Bottom Line

I am not a fan of this game. Nor am I a fan of the TV show. My sons are/were. They enjoy this game, but they agree it goes on far too long. A typical game can stretch into three hours. That is unacceptable for a “roll and move” game. Considering this, and considering the problems with the rules and rulebook, I am frankly surprised Hasbro came out with this game at all. With a more developed rulebook, this could be an OK game. As it stands, I cannot recommend this game, except for diehard fans of the show.

Two out of four

Thread: Variant Rule: Types and Weaknesses

One of the things sorely missing from the game as made is the aspect of Pokemon Types. Therefore I thought up this additional rule that incorporates this important aspect of the video game.

POKEMON TYPES: Each Pokemon has either one or two POKEMON TYPES. Each pokemon also has an ATTACK TYPE, which may be different than it's POKEMON TYPE(S). See the TYPE LIST for a listing of the TYPES.

Certain ATTACK TYPES are strong against certain POKEMON TYPES and weak against others. When battling, compare each Pokemon's ATTACK TYPE against the other's POKEMON TYPE on the TYPE MODIFIER CHART. Add those modifiers to the total as calculated in the normal way. If one or both of the Pokemon involved have two POKEMON TYPES, then you add two modifiers, one for the ATTACK TYPE as compared to each of the POKEMON TYPES. This may result in either a major advantage/disadvantage or a strength and a weakness canceling each other out.

RIVALS: The Rivals' POKEMON TYPES and ATTACK TYPES are as follows:

Lorelei/Lapras
PT: WATER/ICE
AT: ICE ("Blizzard")

Bruno/Machamp
PT: FIGHTING
AT: FIGHTING ("Submission")

Agatha/Gengar
PT: GHOST/POISON
AT: PSYCHIC ("Dream Eater")

Lance/Dragonite
PT: DRAGON/FLYING
AT: NORMAL ("Hyper Beam")

Gary/Arcanine
PT: FIRE
AT: NORMAL ("Take Down")

EXAMPLE 1 - SHELLDER vs. VULPIX:

Trainer 1 has SHELLDER with a POKEMON TYPE of WATER, an ATTACK TYPE of WATER, and an ATTACK STRENGTH of 2. Trainer 2 has VULPIX with a POKEMON TYPE of FIRE, an ATTACK TYPE of FIRE, and an ATTACK STRENGTH of 1.

Trainer 1 rolls a 2 and plays a +1 bonus card. Trainer 2 rolls a 4 and plays a +3 bonus card.

Now, we compare ATTACK TYPE WATER to POKEMON TYPE FIRE on the chart and see that it gets a +3, therefore +3 is added to Trainer 1's total. Likewise we compare ATTACK TYPE FIRE to POKEMON TYPE WATER on the chat and see that it gets a -3, so -3 is added to Trainer 2's total.

Trainer 1: 2+2+1+3=8. Trainer 2:1+4+3-3=5. Trainer 1 wins.

EXAMPLE 2 - BULBASAUR vs. GOLEM

Trainer 1 has BULBASAUR with a POKEMON TYPE of GRASS/POISON, an ATTACK TYPE of GRASS, and an ATTACK STRENGTH of 4. Trainer 2 has GOLEM with a POKEMON TYPE of GROUND/ROCK, an ATTACK TYPE of GROUND, and an ATTACK STRENGTH of 6.

Trainer 1 rolls a 3 and plays a +2 bonus card. Trainer 2 rolls a 3 and plays a +4 bonus card.

Now, we compare ATTACK TYPE GRASS to POKEMON TYPE GROUND on the chart and see that it gets a +3, therefore +3 is added to Trainer 1's total. We also compare ATTACK TYPE GRASS to POKEMON TYPE ROCK on the chart and see that it also gets a +3, therefore another +3 is added to Trainer 1's total for a total of +6. Likewise we compare ATTACK TYPE GROUND to POKEMON TYPE GRASS on the chat and see that it gets a -3, so -3 is added to Trainer 2's total. We also compare ATTACK TYPE GROUND to POKEMON TYPE POISON on the chart and see that it however gets a +3, therefore +3 is added to Trainer 2's total which added to the -3 makes a total of +0.

Trainer 1: 4+3+2+6=15. Trainer 2:6+3+4+0=13. Trainer 1 wins.

I agree, the rule is vague. I think to be proper about it, you should add the number, no matter what. We play it as you can choose to add it or not. But you still lose the card no matter what.

For example, let's say you you play a card that has you add or subtract 1. The Pokemon counter has a 5 on it. By the rules, you need to roll a 4 or 6.

I think that is unnecessarily difficult. So we play that if you play the card, you have the choice of employing the modifier or not. In the example above, you would need to role a 4, 5, or 6.

I mean, for crying out loud, the game is already over an hour playing the way we do, and forget about getting evolution bonuses. How hard should it be to get these Pokemon, anyway.

Thread: User Review

Before I start this review, I should mention that my 8 year old son, who is into Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Yu-gi-oh, Digimon, and no doubt others that I haven't even heard of, loved this game. However, he is not writing this review.

If you have watched any of the Pokemon TV show at all, you'll know that the young trainer Ash traipses around the country visiting various places and catching Pokemon in a variety of ways. He often battles against other Pokemon trainers, although it is the Pokemon which do all the work. In my country, training animals to fight is illegal, but I guess it must be OK where Ash comes from :-).

The game pretty much recreates that plot, and very little else. From 2 to 6 players can all be Ash, which saves on fights but doesn't encourage role-playing :-). There are coloured plastic Ash figures to mark where you are. The game dynamic is that you roll a dice, move that many spaces around the board, and do what the space you land on says.

You may be told to pick up an item card - items are things like potions, to revive stunned pokemon; pokeballs, to help you capture them, and attack bonuses.

You may be told to pick up an event card, which do things like allow you to attack another player, force a trade with another player, capture a pokemon for free, attempt to capture an unknown dungeon pokemon, or pick up item cards (which seemed silly to me).

But best of all, you may find a pokemon, and attempt to capture it. There are about 40 of these types of spaces, maybe half the spaces on the board. Next to each "catch 'em all" space is a well where an overturned pokemon token is placed. To attempt to catch it, you turn the token over and roll a single die, attempting to get a number which matches the capture numbers on the pokemon. Rarer and stronger pokemon have fewer numbers for you to match. You may also use a pokeball item to help you.

So you wander around for a while collecting pokemon, and then, when you think you're pretty good, you can go to Indigo Plateau to challenge one of the Pokemon Masters. These guys are insanely difficult, and to have any chance of success you need to have two +5 attack cards, an unknown dungeon pokemon, and good luck. If you win the battle, you win the game. If you lose, you go back to pokeland for more of the same hunting-gathering to save up for another attempt.

In theory, if you collect enough pokemon, and get unevolved and evolved versions of the same pokemon, you can get an additional bonus when you battle, which would certainly come in handy. However with over a hundred different pokemon in the game, and the high probability that adult players can't recognise the relationships, this is unlikely to happen. We had about 6 pokemon each in the game we played, and there wasn't a hint of collecting such a set.

So, is the game fun? Eight year old might say yes. However Mummy and Daddy think it is the most boring and frustrating game that we have had the misfortune to lay eyes on. And it went on way past bedtime on a school night, which made Mummy look like this:

Consider attacking, for example. All you can gain from attacking is that one of your opponent's pokemon becomes stunned, which makes it harder for them to win. I chose to never attack, because I couldn't see the benefit for me. If I was forced to attack by an Event Card, I played my weakest pokemon and effectively conceded defeat.

Also, consider trading. Many of the pokemon are very similar in power. Only the unknown dungeon pokemon are better. And they are rare enough that your opponent is unlikely to want to give one up, not for any price. In the end, I was reduced to touring the board trying to find an event card which would force 8yo to trade one to me, but both times he fended me off with a pokedoll. Without a powerful enough pokemon, I had almost no chance to win.

But who would like this game? I think 8yo will show all of his mates, and he will be able to explain the rules to them, and they may enjoy it. Also, the board is well made and the counters are sturdy, which is important for kids games. Because from now on, only kids will be playing it, at our house!
