I didn't
have my good camera handy when we were playing. I
wouldn't want to formally submit such a crappy photo
to BGG, so I just stuck it in my personal gallery so
I could give an example of what the game looked like.
[c] [/c]And here's an example tile of what I actually
printed to get that "period" look:
As I said, I just GIMPed out the blue, then printed the
tiles onto light-blue card stock.
Oh, and BTW, we have played with Singlets being scorable, I wonder how the two ways change game play? Obviously there would be less available points, especially with the advanced tiles. With the the "Singlet-scores" interpretation, you don't have a persistent ship placement for that turn, while the opposite is true of the "Singlet-is-worthless". Having to decide whether to place a persistant ship on one of the sea lanes is obviously more choice instead of getting an easy 2 and getting your ship right back. I have never played Carc, does it have a parallel tile?

Thread: A two-player game to try out the [basic] rules...

[c]
[/c]
First off, since I don't have a color printer (yet), I made a black-and-white version of the tiles: this involved doing a screen capture of the pretty colored tiles, taking them into GIMP, and erasing everything that was blue... then I printed the tiles onto blue card-stock, and chopped 'em all up: not a pretty set of game pieces, but fully functional.

Then I conned my ever-game-tolerant wife into playing, which wasn't too hard since she's a Carcassonne fan anyways. This made explaining the rules quick and easy – “it's just like Carcassonne, except...” I do like the fact that the rules start out by very clearly stating number of players, what the game is about, and gives a detailed parts manifest.

About the only question the rules leave unanswered is: are the little “singlets” scorable islands?

We decided they weren't, and began play.

The game was fun... a nice variation on the Carcassonne theme. We tried the attacking rules a couple times, but ultimately didn't really see the point. We'll have to try the game a couple more times to see how this works into the overall strategy. Also, we want to try the advanced rules as well.

Based on the one session, we give it a thumbs up! Go to your printers! Try it!

(oh, I suppose some of you are wondering what the final score was? Well, I'm not admitting it, but I might have lost 84 to 109. Ouch.)

Thread: Re: Tile Quality

Ok, I went ahead and cleaned up what is available in the PDF. It's a lot better but some of the details are fuzzy from the jpeg artifact removal process. No biggie, it's improved. My next step is adding what someone mentioned earlier, registration marks on the sheets for ease of cutting. In actuality, I won't be putting little crosses at each corner, that would be too time consuming, instead, I'm going to put a 2" square outline around each tile.

My question at this point is, is it ok for me to upload those modified pages to the geek? Or is it bad form to modify someone's work (albeit freely given) and give it away to others?

I have also modified some ships from juniorgenerals to use in the game, I'm pretty sure I can upload those at will since as long as I don't charge money for them, that site says do what you want. Would anyone be interested in those? They fold up in small pup tent like triangles. I put a circle on each one that you could either print out the sheet as many times as you need and then color in the circle, or you could just paint the circle (or background for that matter) in a program and print it out already colored (the ships are in color by the way). I actually plan on printing first, coloring and then placing them in stands from another game. I might actually paint the stands instead, that way no matter how many ships I print (merchants or pirates) a player will still only have 8 stands to use in the game, as per the rules. Having cool ships isn't a game breaker, but can some nice flavor.

Thread: Tile Quality

Does anyone know if there is a way to get access to the original tile set before it was jpeg'd or pdf'd? Maybe I'm just being too nit-picky, but that jpeg distortion on some of the tiles is distracting to me. I tried to export the tiles and clean them up myself in Paint Shop Pro, but I'm no graphics guru and haven't made much of an impact.

Also, if there was a way to get it from the original designers, maybe we could add the previous suggestion of marks at the corners to ease making tiles.

Thread: First Session of a Newbie

I've only played Carcassonne itself once, and that was only really a "half game". It was enjoyable, though I still wasn't sure if I wanted to plunk down the cash for it myself. However, I did feel it would be a game that my wife just might play with me.

Then I saw this game, which is obviously heavily influenced and derived from various versions of Carcassonne (which parts come from where, I couldn't tell you though). So I downloaded it, printed it to full-sheet labels, stuck them on some thick posterboard, cut them out, and got some pieces from other games to use as markers and tokens. Then I asked if my wife would like to try it out (emphasizing it was almost as much "puzzle" as "game"). Yay, she agreed!

So I explained the basics of the game to her (hopefully somewhat well, considering I'm fairly new at the gameplay). Then we began laying tiles. At first, it looked like my general gaming experience may help me to cruise along; I was setting up some nice trade routes and got a few lucrative-looking islands going. My wife quickly caught on to the strategy of the game, however, and began building fairly large landmasses which just happened to also make it more difficult for me to complete what *I* was building.

What's worse is that I kept pulling tiles that were just barely "off" from what I needed to get a good trade route or a decent island closed. And by this point, in hopes of getting some closure, I had run out of ships to place, while my wife kept scoring more and more points, keeping her ships in supply, yet setting up some good locations for herself. All the while, she was racking up resources like nobody's business. I knew I was a goner, but I hoped the end game scoring may help me.

Near the end, I was finally able to get some closure to some of my key routes, allowing me at least a few ships to make some points up. Unfortunately, by this point, it was too little, too late. Although at the end, I was the only one with pirates, her resources and in-game scoring put her well in the lead, and although my pirates racked me up quite a few end-game points, they weren't nearly enough to beat her.

I ended up losing 91 to 120. I did manage to get the most Rum (which is interesting, considering I was the only one who used ships for Pirates in this game), but my wife scored big on all the rest (she had 8 dye and 9 spice! Ouch!).

We both had an enjoyable time, and my wife even said it would be a game she'd play with me again sometime. While I don't know if this will get her into gaming in general, it may help, and if nothing else, down the road she may at least play some of my "lighter"-style games with me like Nexus Ops. Time will tell, I suppose. Great game, and although I know much of the credit for the design goes to the designers of Carcassonne itself, this variant of that game was very enjoyable, at least from the perspective of one not familiar with the main game itself.

Thread: Constructive Criticism

Having gone to the trouble to print and construct this game, I have a suggestion: Place a small cross at the intersections for each tile in the PDF document. With the land/sea tiles, it's easy to see where to make the cuts to ensure that the tile is square, but when it gets to the all-sea tiles, it gets a little more difficult. Having some guide lines in the document would be ever so helpful.

That being said, thanks for making this game available! I haven't had the chance to play it yet, but I appreciate the efforts you've made.

Ahh Carcassone, probably one of the best games ever made, and this game only capitalises on it. Pirates and plunder really adds a new feel to Carcassone by using ships instead of Meebles, or 'Meeps'. TIles include islands, water lanes etc. This game really captures the feel of the carribean. 2 thumbs up!

Not wanting to cause any problems between ourselves and Mr. Wrede, we have removed Carcassonne name from the title of the game.

The decription will change very soon and a BGG Cross Link has been added at the main Carcassonne entry to this variant.

Please check out this nice little fan variant and let us know what you think.

Klaus-Jürgen Wrede is the mastermind behind Carcassonne and shall ever remain so.
