We play that the abilities negative or positive are not optional. Meaning that the ability is in effect until replaced by a different ability or discarded.

Thread: Question on abilities

Hello, I'm new to this game but have a question that doesn't seem to have been asked (yet).

Under the Combat rules in the "Play a Battle Card" section, it says:

"During this part of the battle, additional abilities gained from Ability Cards assigned to creatures participating in the battle may be used"
Question: is the word "may" a mistranslation or what? If using abilities are optional, what is the point of assigning negative abilities on other players?

I assume the whole point of negative abilities (weak, weaker, etc) is to hinder your foe in battle. If not, can someone tell me the best way to use them?

Thanks!!

-William

Thread: Okay... My review.

I picked this game because it looked fun. I wanted a semi-simple game that my son and I could have fun with.

First, the rules!... Like many other games I have played, you don't realize how bad they are until you start playing the game. Way too many questions not answered by the rules. BUT! being a seasoned gamer, I knew where to go to answer those question. And realized that I was not the only one... Problem(s) solved! Let's Play!

What you get... I love the art! The look and feel is great! But, I feel like it needs more. I don't feel like there is enough cards for a good 4 player game. Especially, when there is a table wide adversion in effect. Our last game actually had three table wide adversions in effect (Elfs, Orcs, Gnomes).

Game play... I felt this game took about 5 full games to iron out all the kinks. I wanted to give the original rules a chance, before adding any house rules. Our 2nd game took 2 hours to play. And while some felt the games was broke, I did not. The biggest issue was the amount of time to play the game. Our 4th game saw the addition of a suggested house rule. All battle cards are played when turned over. This turned out to be a cascading nightmare. I once drew 3 battle cards in a row. It wasn't working for me. After, a few days of though, I felt I had an idea that would work. So, the 5th game we played saw a different house rule. This rule stated that a player could NOT discard battle cards. And WOW, what a difference! At one time, the player that wasn't starting battles, had too because thats all he had in his hand! This game took 75 minutes to play and had all three players with in 3 points.

Is it broke... I don't think so... Let me just say, that there is a right way to play and a wrong way to play. We've all played against the guys who play the game by the rules, but don't follow the intent. This game lacks a control to limit that. The intent is to get gold, and to get that gold you got to have battles. And if nobody starts the battles, then nobody gets gold and the game drags! If everyone in the group plays as intended, by starting battles, then the game will fly and all will have fun. And Medusa! Leave the card in!

Finaly... In closing, with a large FAQ added to the rules and a few games under my belt, this has turned out to be that fun game I was looking for.

Thread: Re: Basic question about multiple creature cards and abilities

Thanks for the help! I played a 4 player game this weekend and it was tons of fun! Everyone ended the game within a 3 point range. My only complaint is that there was not enough coins to go around...

The one ability card per creature type worked extremely well - there was no confusion. The only comment my friends had was that the Troll special debility wasn't removable since there does not seem to be an ability that you can replace it with.

Thread: Re: Broken Game - But fixable?

I bought this and tried playing it with some friends. We found a few issues with this game.

First thing we noticed was that the instructions were worded poorly in a few places and bit overlong for such quick game. Thus, because we were trying to play it with limited time over lunch at a gaming convention we were left thinking we missed some important points.

Our second attempt faired much better but we did notice a couple of minor quality issues (e.g. unfilled white space on War Of Madness).

We also noticed the slowness, though weren't sure that it wouldn't speed up with familiarity.

We never saw the medusa played but it certainly seems like an unbalanced card due to the low die rating. It should probably be left out as I can imagine at least one silver bullet strategy (using gnomes (especially clever ones) and the medusa to decimate opponents ranks).

As house rule I like the idea of either letting the biggest loser of the battle or better yet the player with the least gold determine which creature from the winning combatants is retired to the discard pile.

I also noticed the disincentive issue. We had players discarding combat cards.

When we play next I'll suggest incorporating David's house rules.

That said I do look forward to playing it again.

hmm i doff my hat to you sir, you are indeed correct, it has been so very long since i actually sat and read the rules i had quiet forgotten that, (in fact to my shame it is quiet possible i have never ever implemented that rule)

but i dont think i could sway my lot from implementing it now

but my apologies for leading someone false with advice, mind you that said have you tried playing the game the way i do? it leads for a quick game (it has often worried me that people complain of the game dragging when i have never noticed that, mayhap that is a consequence of horribly maxed creatures

Thread: Re: Basic question about multiple creature cards and abiliti

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to disagree with you slightly, WalkerRedEye (although you're usually spot on with your MDF replies).

It says in the rules, "Ability Cards may only be played if they can be assigned to a Creature Card, or a group of Creature Cards, already in play. These may be your own creatures, or the creatures of other players. If there is an Ability Card associated with the particular creature(s), the new card replaces the old one. No creature or group of creatures may be assigned more than one Ability Card at any time."

So your Elves are Clever. Great! This card will affect all of the Elves you have in play, whether one or more, and they can switch between 1's and 6's. Then you make your Elves Flailing. Superb! But they're no longer Clever. Now all of them are Flailing (re-rolling up to once per battle) and none of them are Clever.

The one semantic argument that someone may attempt is that an Ability Card "can be assigned to a Creature Card, or a group of Creature Cards". So one may argue that you could choose that a single Elf is Clever and that another single Elf is Flailing. I believe that this is not in the spirit of the game though, and that it is the incorrect stance to take.

One Ability Card per type of Creature Card that you have in play. That Ability Card affects all creatures of that type that you have in play.

Going back to alita_4b's original query then: If your three Elves are Stronger (+2 dice) then each of your three Elves gets +2 dice, for a total of 12 dice for that group of Elves. (Note that there is no +1 dice card for Elves; only for Goblins and Orcs.)

Thread: Re: Basic question about multiple creature cards and abilities

hmm intresting interpretation, but i have always played it that all buffs apply to all creatures of the same type, you could have a single greedy, kindhearted, flying dwarf or 7 dwarves, the key point for my use of this theory is the plural of the word "my dwarves..." as opposed to the singular "my dwarf..."

by all means you could use each card on a specific creature with only slightly more book-keeping, in fact next time i play i may consider voiceing this idea

Thread: Re: Basic question about multiple creature cards and abiliti

Awesome - thanks for the quick reply!

Based on your response, I'm guessing that the 1 ability/buff card can be played on 1 creature, but applies to all creatures of that type. For example, for 3 elves, you can have a maximum of 3 ability/buff cards, one for each elf, which could result in 3 clever, flailing, stronger elves? And if one elf is removed from play, the corresponding ability/buff is discarded as well?

buffs apply to all creatures, there fore you could have a battle of armageddon army of 5 clever, flailing, stronger and even blind elves (although you would be doing pretty lucky to be in that situation (well apart from the blind bit ofcourse) and they would each roll 4 dice, be allowed to reroll and be able to convert any 1s rolled to 6s (probably a good idea as they cant find any gold what with being vision impaired)

Thread: Basic question about multiple creature cards and abilities

I played My Dwarves Fly in a two-player game for the first time. While playing the game, my sister and I were wondering:

?) What do you do with multiple creature cards of the same type in combination with buffs/ability cards? For example, there's an ability card that gives +1 dice for elves. If my sister selects 3 elves for battle, does each elf get the +1 dice? Or does the ability apply to the group as a whole?

There are other buffs/abilities that we're unsure of as well, but this one is the most memorable.
yep reshuffle the discards and make a new deck

no you may not play a creature "offensivly" your options on a turn are:

1 PLay a creature card, in the rules it says "...face-up in front of you"
2 Play an ability (negative abilities may be played "offensivly")
3 Play a battle card
or
4 Discard a single card

Thread: reshuffle up the discarded cards?

When you run out of cards in one of the draw piles do you shuffle the discarded cards and start a new draw pile? It doesn't say to in the instructions but then again the instructions are short and vague. We play that you don't but then it is always a mad rush to get all the creature cards first.

Also, can you play a creature card in front of another player in order to make them loose creatures through aversion?

Thread: Re: Broken Game - But fixable?

i have played this game only once until now, but i experienced it as beeing very unfair. two players did - as you have written above - concentrate on collecting monster cards, mostly monsters that could not be discarded by other players cards, like the giant for example.

for my part i only got orcs and goblins and other creatures that had to be discarded when their nemesis (e.g. elves) appeared in the game (that is, if there are 3 elves in the game, all goblins have to be discarded).

so one player had a whole army of powerful monsters, while others had only a few weak imps. that wouldnt have been so bad, if those event cards were helpful. but neither the ability cards nor the event cards came in handy. the cards that allowed a player who did not succeed in battle to get his share of the collected gold, was always "undone" by another players "blocking-card" (dont know the english cards name, since i played the german version"

i found this very frustrating for the players with weaker monsters.
as you have described, playing battle cards was not an option for us.

i would give this game a 5 - mainly for the funny artwork. i cant really tell b playing only one game though. thats only my first impression. maybe this game gets better after a few matches or maybe i'll find the rules so unfair that i would lower my initial rating.

Good review, but maybe you should add what you think are the pros and cons of this game and tell us your personal rating for this game.

i have only played it once. my impressions were:

pro:
+ simple rules: that's always a pro to me when it gets to card games, which i usually see as a time filler
+ humour: the card design and description are indeed funny
+ artwork: the artwork does a great job for making this game so funny

cons:
- game mechanism: when i first saw the cards i thought "haha very funny", but the game itself turned out to be rather boring to me.
- luck factor: dont misunderstand me - i usually never complain about luck in games. in my opinion luck is something that makes boardgames very interesting. i dont like to plan every turn in detail. luck is always good. but when we played "my drwarves fly" the luck factor seemed to be the determing element in the game. it's very hard to beat someone who has a few yeti cards, the giant and the dragon or whatsoever. the event cards turned out not to be powerful at all, since their functions were always "blocked/undone" (played the german version - dunno the english card's name) by some other player's event card.

since i have played this game only once, i cant give it a final rating.
but after my first match i would consider a 5 out of 10 as apropriate.
thanks to the artwork it has a certain flair, but in my opinion this is far away from beeing a good game.

greetings,
seb
Yeti: Although the Yeti card itself is not at all clear about this, the Review Card explicitly states that Yeti averts "all gnomes on the table".

Hydra: I mostly agree with Dave, but the rules are hopelessly muddled with regard to "re-roll" and "roll again".
I have to say I dont think so

What is the point of rolling 4 dice then rolling another 4 afterwards? Why not just roll 8 to start with?

Also no other creature comes near to this level of power 4 dice creatures are pretty powerful anyway and 5 even more so (shown by their comparitive rarity) suddenly adding a creature that effectivly tops everythingelse by that much of a margin seems very unlikely to me.

But that said play it anyway you (and all players) are happy with

Walker Red Eye

Hi Walke Red Eye,

thanks for the response, clears it up for me, the Hydra is indeed quite powerful when you have an 8 die roll, in the game rules the usage of "re-roll" and "roll again" is open to interpretation. Think we'll go with "roll again". Still it's only a power 4 creature, add a giant to your battle and next round you can enjoy the faces of your opponents yet another time when you crush them with the Hydra in the next battle

Good point you make for a tied game, that helps me out.

Thanks again!

Barry

Whoops missed that last bit of question 3

In the event of more than one person haveing the same amount of gold above (or equalling) 15 then the winner is decided by the player with the most creatures if it is still a tie then it goes to the person with the most total battledice, in the (extremely?) unlikely event of it still being a tie I'd settle it with scissors, paper, stone, or fighting a final battle with (no gold gain) for victory

Walker Red Eye

Thread: Re: Question on some rules

Hullo Barry

1 Well you can play it either way, the rules state the scareing away thing only affects a single creature in your own army unless 3 of them come up, when there are 3 all affected units leave, this is not very much fun though so we play it as the yeti scares away all gnomes, I don't know m'b they dont like hairy things. But play it teh way you prefer by all means.

2 Hmm that is an intresting interpretation of a point, we have always played it as if you did not like the 1st result of the 4 dice roll, then you could roll it again to get a better result. I would personally say makeing the hydra effectivly a 8 dice creature is extremely powerful, probably too powerful, I would go with allowing a re-roll to get a better result instead of 8 dice.

3 With ties the treasure is simply split as fairly as possible between the tied victors as stated in the section "dividing the Spoils" on the left hand side above the sample game situation on the rules sheet

Hope this helps

Walker Red Eye

Thread: Question on some rules

Yesterday I played this game for the first time; very fun game, but a few things were not quite clear from the manual, maybe someone can clear this up for me:
1. The Yeti, 'gnomes go', does this apply to all gnomes on the table, or is this ability just the same as for the other creatures (remove only the race in your army) ?

2. The Hydra has strength 4, but may roll again (doesn't state re-roll), so for this creature you may add another result of a 4-die roll to your score this round ?

3. How do you cope when there is a tie. Tied score in battle or at the end of the game when more than one player has 15 goldpieces ?

Thanks!

Barry

Thread: Re: Broken Game - But fixable?

broken? thats a bit harsh isnt it?

Maybe a bit. But, it did feel broken. Then again, I just about can't play a game without optimizing, find efficiencies, etc. So, having the game reinforce that it is bad to play a battle card, yet you need them played to make progress, seems broken to me.

im not sure your idea of battles happening by a draw of a card would help as that would mean all card draws would be "open" so no-one would have a secret hand of cards which would be silly

No, draws are secret. Each player draws their card, looks at it. If it is a battle card, they reveal it at that point in time, and a battle happens. Lots of games have a hidden-draw mechanism, but with certain cards required to be played immediately if drawn.

the medusa is powerful but remember that assuming the person who owns it wins battles then just call it the most powerful card in his army so he has to loose it (when we play doppleganger and medusa are considered very powerful equal too titans dragons etc for monster loss by winner)

The rules explicitly say that the creature with the most dice rolled (including abilities) is to be removed, and if there are two or more tied creatures, the owner may decide. So, calling the Medusa "most powerful" would be an alternative house rule.

you also have the option to discard a card should you want to, may not affect game length but it is another option

Yes, you do. I did miss that in my summary of what you could do. We never did it.

when i play i find this game moves very fast indeed, but then again i have played it alot

Our experience was that the game went slowly. We reduced the target from 15 to 10 gold, to make the game finish faster.

*shrugs* each to their own i guess

Yup.

Thread: Broken Game - But fixable?

I picked up My Dwarves Fly off Tanga a little while ago, but finally got a chance to play it last night.

The components are, for the price point of the game, acceptable. The cards are reasonable card stock, with fun art by John Kovalik. The strength/gold markers are a bit small and fiddly, especially if you have to mark two or more people at the same point. The game rules have a set of cut-out player cards that seem superfluous for this sort of game.

The play is fairly simple. On your turn, you play one card (creature, ability, or battle), apply the affects, then draw your hand back up to 5 cards. There are two draw piles, and you may draw from either one. One draw pile is creatures, these can be added to your armies. The other is events (modify the result of battles) abilities (enhance your creatures or weeken someone elses) or battles -- trigger a fight, the whole point of having creatures.

In a battle, each player will select a specified number (differs for different battles) of their creatures to participate. You roll dice for each, with the sum of all of these being used to determine the winner -- who gets some gold. So, generally high rolls are good - but low rolls (for most creatures, 1s) add gold to your potential winnings. Whoever wins, collects the gold for the battle, plus any gold they themselves rolled. And, the winner also has their strongest (most dice thrown) creature die in the battle. (A useful balancing factor.)

First person to collect 15 gold wins.

This leads to the basic flaw in the game. On your turn, you essentially have two choices -- play a card that makes your army stronger (or someone else's weaker, which makes you relatively stronger), or play a card that starts a battle. If you make yourself stronger, you're more likely to win if someone else starts a battle -- so it is (almost) always better to let someone else start the battles. So, nobody does this. This tends to make the game drag on. Even worse, there is one creature (the Medusa) which, if it participates in a battle, can kill one opposing creature of choice -- once this is in play, the disincentive to start a battle is even worse, not only do you not advance your cause, you greatly risk losing one of your best creatures even if you don't win the battle. This problem leads to the game dragging on, and to me rating it a 4 on the BGG scale.

But, can this be fixed? Firstly, I think the Medusa is overpowered, and can just be removed from the game, reducing that counter-incentive to battle. But, I don't think that's enough.

I think turning battle's into "instants" that take effect as soon as they are drawn would probably be the best solution. That way, the starting of a battle would not cost the player starting it anything -- they've made their ordinary play, and oops a battle just happened too. The person triggering the battle would have a mild advantage (they just got a new creature/ability out) and mild disadvantage (they only have 4 cards in hand for events), but I think these would balance out. I think the game would flow faster, with more battles, and this would make it more fun, and make it finish quicker, both important aspects of a beer & pretzels game (which this clearly is).

Some possible problems with this: 1) battles drawn during inital hand stocking. I'd have these discarded, and another card drawn. 2) multiple cascading battles during hand restock after a battle. I think the number of available battle cards will limit this, as will the desire to replace dead creatures. Though in practice a limit of two cascades might be needed.

With the variant, I feel this might move up to a 6 or so on the BGG scale, by being both quicker and not broken -- a good fill game.

Thread: Not as fun with 3 players

I had been playing this with my 12 year old son as a 2 player game for awhile and found it fun and light and pretty quick. So I was looking forward to playing it with 3 players with my wife and best friend.

I was pretty disappointed. It seemed to take a LOT longer than the two player game. Even after going through a few rounds so everyone knew what was going on. It just really felt like it dragged on and on. My wife got to 10 gold after a certain point and the question was posed, "Can we play to 10?" I readily agreed. Do others have this experience?

I think this is now relgated to my 2-player game collection

Thread: Re: lots of questions

You beat me to the reply, Dave. Adding to your thoughts...

1. I would add that we interpreted the rules slightly differently. I agree that it is the strongest creature of the winning player's army that is currently engaged in the battle. However the rules state, "...the creature with the highest number of battle dice (with Ability Cards figured into the total)". This makes no reference to the creatures' special abilities, so we ruled that the winning player can choose any one creature from their participating army so long as that creature has the most (tied if necessary) battle dice, regardless of powers.

For example a winning player could choose any one of the Dragon, Titan, Troll, Hydra, or even a Strong Orc or Stronger Elf if they were the biggest creatures as they are all tied for four battle dice.

Note that the Doppleganger will be counted as having however many battle dice it rolled that combat. So there's the (sometimes tough) choice between copying your opponent's Giant or Cyclops to get the most battle strength (but losing your Doppleganger if you win), or copying something of equal value to your highest non-Doppleganger beastie to save the Doppleganger (but perhaps losing the combat).

2. Taking the above stance means that winning the battle doesn't always mean losing your very best creature. So we never had to reduce the power of the Medusa. Regardless she is considered by our group to be the best creature in the deck as well.

We find that typically only one of the Medusa or Doppleganger will be in play for any period of time. As soon as they're both active in the same combat, the Doppleganger will mimic the Medusa and target the Medusa, whilst the real Medusa will target the Doppleganger. It kills them both, but makes tactical sense from both players' point of view. You'd be unwise to leave your opponent with the Medua or Doppleganger alive when you could have killed them.

Fear the player who has *both* of these in their army.

Thread: Re: lots of questions

Hullo Aaron

As an official (well officialish) geek helper for this game I feel I can answer your questions

1 It is their strongest creature in the battle, in the event of the winner haveing 2 creatures of the same (most powerful) strength the preference is for the one with the better power; the hydra is obviously better than a troll so the hydra would be lost but in the event of equal strength and usefulness, for example the dragon and the titan ifn there is really nothing in it it should be decided mutually by your oppanant(s)

2 It is only a creature that participtaed in the battle, medusa is a good spolier to play in a battle you are obviously gonna loose as it can really thin a powerful army; looseing 2 of your best creatures in the same battle is sometimes too much hassle to make some one bring a weaker army, as an aside note and continuing from answer 1 certainly in the group i play this with the medusa is considered the most powerful creature there is purely because of its ability and we allow waiveing of the wording "strongest" as for which creature the winner of a battle has to loose

3 oo thats a very good question, in a hypothetical situation where theer were only 2 orcs in play and a battle was called and teh doppleganger was asigned to be an orc, this would it seem to imply that all dwarfs woudl have to leave, purely because of the aversion rule, I think I would have to come down on the side of saying no though, primarily because of the wording on the doppleganger card its self, it says: "Mimics battle strength and special ability of one other creature already in play." technically aversion isnt a special ability its just inbuilt intolerance

hope this has helped

Walker Red Eye

Thread: my review of "my dwarves fly!"

First off I will say that the only reason I brought this game is that I love the artwork of John Kovalic. If you also love his art then buy this game, it has some classics in it especially the "yeti" card and the card that gives the game its english title "My Dwarves Fly High!". The game itself has more than its artwork to reccomend it however.

The game consists of two decks of cards: one of creatures and the other of abilities and events. There are also wooden dobbers for keeping track of battle and found gold totals, a track to put the dobbers on, some good solid cardstock gold coins and five nicely chunky wooden dice.

Game play is simple and somewhat reminiscent of the munchkin games. (or least the two munchkin games I have played; munchkin and star munchkin) Players take one action on each of their turns, the four possible actions are:

1) Play a creature from their hand (a hand consists of five cards of any combination of the two decks)

2) Play an ability on a creature, this can be either a benefical one or negative card, abilities can be played on any creature or group of creatures in play

3) Play a battle card

4) Discard a card

After each player has taken an action he must refill his hand at the end of the his turn

At the central core of the game are battles, battles are fought in the world of "my dwarves fly" purely for money, for it is by being the first player to amass 15 gold coins you win the game; HUZZAH! as Igor would say. Battles are of varying size depending on the battle card played to start them, they range from the smallest of duels in which each player may bring only one creature to fight to the awe inspiring WAR OF ARRMAGEDDON! In which every player may bring up to five creatures.

Battles are fought purely on dierolling; each crature has a battle strength this is the number of dice he rolls for his combat total, a strong orc has three while a puny gnome but one, a mighty creature such as a dragon or titan might have four or even five! So each player rolls for each of his creatures and totals them all togetehr for his battle score the player whose cratures amass the largest score wins the battle and a set reward in gold, so obviously you want to roll high right? UUU,aaaHHH! Not neccesserily! For each one that a creature rolls he also finds a gold coin. However these gold coins can only be found should the player still have the largest battle total. The down side of winning battles however is that the stongest of the winning players creatures must be discarded after the battle.

These are the basest of rules, the game is while essentialy very simple enhanced by other rules: some creatures do not get on with others; orcs with dwarves being an obvious example and may cause them to leave when they are played, most of the more powerful individual or unique creatures have their own special abilities that affect how they fight in battles; the titan for example finds gold pieces on a roll of one as well as two on his battle dice, there is a large element of bluff in the post battle diplomacy phase in which players have the option to play an event card or not, event cards affect the outcome of battles in varying ways; allowing the player to add an additional creature to fight and increase his battle total or allowing a player to collect the gold his creatures found even ifn he did not win the battle. This may make the game sound complicated but I can assure you it isnt, and ifn that is the case then I am explaining it wrong. Almost everyone I have played this game with knows exactly what is going on after only one or at most two battles.

The game plays quickly and it is often whipped out as a prelude or finale game of the evening while waiting on people to show up or while some do not feel like leaving yet, it is completed in a short space of time, needs little room to set up and play and is fun, challenging and pretty to look at with a good dollop of that irripressible Kovalic humour. As you may be able to tell I like this game a lot and highly reccomend it. Ifn you enjoy Munchkin games I feel you will enjoy this game as well, Ifn you like Kovalic art you will enjoy this game, ifn you like games where you can play nasty things on your opponants or turn their armies in to pacafists you will like this game and ifn you dont take your game playing too seriously you will certainly like this game.

I hope this review prooves helpful to anyone reading it and that they can understand my typing. I had originally intended to keep it brief but it seems to have run on a bit longer than I expected. This is my first review I would be most thankful for feedback about ifn it is an O.K. review or not as I intend to write a few more for I need geek points!
