Thread: 1841 Debt variant

About a year ago, I saw a variant where a company can decide to float debt in addition to issuing stock. If anyone could point me to where it might be, I'd appreciate it. Also, for anyone who's tried it, how does it play? Thanks in advance.

Thread: Re: Question on Treatment when no Ferdinandea Succession

MarkTheGamer wrote:
The following four questions assume that there is a valid route connecting Milano and Venezia, that the Ferdinandea Succession does not occur, and that the game is in phase four.
Ok then.
MarkTheGamer wrote:

(a) 3.3.4, bullet 2: Is it legal in phase four to start a corporation with a token inside the yellow border of Austria? [Rule 3.3.4 seems to indicate that it is not legal.]

As said by beckerc, you can start a company anywhere on the map (except Swiss territory) in phase four, so this is fine. Note, however, that you can't start a major partially inside and partially outside Austria, as then its two bases would be separated by an active border (3.3.4).

(b) 3.3.4: Is it legal for the IRSFF to start corporation B with all or corporations B's tokens outside the yellow border of Austria?

YES. Unequivocally. You can even buy its tokens assuming you can trace a route there from an IRSFF token outside of Austria.

(c) 4.2: Assume that the IRSFF has a valid route from Milano to Parma without crossing the yellow Austrian border. May the IRSFF lay a token in Parma? [The token laying rule 4.2 seems to indicate that this would be legal.]

Correct. You have to be able to trace a route from one of your tokens to where you want to place one without crossing an active border, so you're good.

(d) 4.2: Assume that the IRSFF has a valid route from Milano to Parma which does cross the yellow Austrian border. May the IRSFF lay a token in Parma? [The token laying rule 4.2 seems to indicate that this would not be legal. However, the IRSFF is actually operating in both countries.]

No never ever. You must have some route from one of your tokens to where you want to lay a token that does not cross an active border: not even if it does it twice.

Note that I'm disagreeing with beckerc on b,c, and d. I think he misinterpreted b, but I'm actively disagreeing with c and d.

Thread: Re: Q: Fernandea Succession Additonal Share Offering Order

I would say option 2 just because of playability. Switching to and fro between companies isn't very practicable. Since this isn't clarified in the rules players should agree on one of the options.

Thread: Re: Question on Treatment when no Ferdinandea Succession

Hi Mark,

I just played my first game of 1841 yesterday so I can now answer your questions. Of course, they are not very reliable with only one game played...
Maybe you should direct your question to the 18xx Yahoo group. Some of the active designers and publishers would read your questions there.
Anyway, here are my two cents:

(a) 3.3.4, bullet 2: Is it legal in phase four to start a corporation with a token inside the yellow border of Austria? [Rule 3.3.4 seems to indicate that it is not legal.]

Rule 4.6.3 says that from the first 4 train on corporations may be started in Austria. Mentioning the Ferdinandea Secession in 3.3.4 may have mislead you.

(b) 3.3.4: Is it legal for the IRSFF to start corporation B with all of corporations B's tokens outside the yellow border of Austria?

There is nothing in the rules that explicitely prohibits it so I would say yes.
Still, the IRSFF cannot buy one of B's tokens and vice versa.

(c) 4.2: Assume that the IRSFF has a valid route from Milano to Parma without crossing the yellow Austrian border. May the IRSFF lay a token in Parma? [The token laying rule 4.2 seems to indicate that this would be legal.]
I think the surviving IRSFF is the one big excemption from the token laying rule in 4.6.2. Since it already has tokens on both sides of the border there is no reason not to allow it laying additional tokens on both sides.

Tricky question. My feeling would say yes because the way the track is built shouldn't affect the token laying rule.

I hope this helped a bit.
Christian

Thread: Q: Fernandea Succession Additonal Share Offering Order

During the playing, we came across a few situations in 1841 which were not clear. Would you please help us clarify these?

4.6.9: Assume that there is no legal route between Milano and Venzia, and the Fernandea Succession does occur (1st paragraph of 4.6.9). What is the order of the chances to purchase extra shares?

Bullet 13 states "shareholdrrts are offered a chance to buy an extyra share of first the Sb adb then the SFL...."

Bullet 14 states "Once all Shareholders have had a chance to purchase one additional certificate, the President may choose to allow another round of purchases by Shareholders. This may continue as long as there are Certificates in the Intial Offering of that Corporation."

What is the order to this sequence of offering additional shares?
Option 1:
--One share of SB is offered to each SB Share owner.
--One share of SFL is offered to each SFL Share owner.
--If the SB president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SB Shareholder.
--If the SB president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SB Shareholder, etc.
--If the SFL president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SFL Shareholder.
--If the SFL president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SFL Shareholder, etc.
Option 2:
--One share of SB is offered to each SB Share owner.
--If the SB president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SB Shareholder.
--If the SB president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SB Shareholder, etc.
--One share of SFL is offered to each SFL Share owner.
--If the SFL president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SFL Shareholder.
--If the SFL president elects, one additonal share is offered to each SFL Shareholder, etc.
Thread: Tao of Gaming Review

[This review assumes you are familiar with 18xx. See my review under 1830 for basics. This was written in 2001 -- Brian]

I've finally played 1841. Let me start by clearly stating that this is longer and much more complicated than the standard 18xx game. I expect it to take 6 hours, instead of the more typical 3. Also, there are 24 companies, instead of the typical 8-12. 1841 take place in Italy (and a few other countries) and has tons of bells and whistles. What really distinguishes this game are two aspects:

* Trains become obsolete quickly
* Complicated Stock options

The last part is based on the following observations: companies can own shares in each other. A company can, in fact, start up another company and become the president! This can be good or bad, since trains disappear so quickly in '41. Each company you own is a potential deathtrap. Financial operations are paramount, since companies get capital as shares are sold, and can (after they've had a complete operating round), choose to dump any shares in their IPO into the bank, effectively 'selling' them from the company to raise funds. A strategem in '41 is to use one company to start another and trash the second company (which you don't own any shares of) and constantly withold with it to fund both companies.

To be honest, 1841 could be good. But, it takes a long time to play and your first game will be a mass of confusion. Do not even consider this game unless you are very comfortable with at least 3 or more other 18xx titles. And if you can only play infrequently, best to stick to some of the other titles. It's complicated.
