Thread: User Review

I purchased this game several years ago to play with my then 5 year old daughter. It was a Toys R Us purchase, but I was glad to get out of the rut of playing the regular kid games, Trouble, Sorry, Candyland.....

This was a big hit and it has remained on my shelves as it is a nice quality game with an easy set up. It is quick playing and is simple in the sense that it involves looking at cards and then being asked questions about them. There are no special moves, extra points or other things added to the game to make it a pain.

The box comes with a square board that is the same size of the box, about 9 square inches. There is a START and FINISH space on the board, with 26 yellow spaces in between them. A basic, simplistic board. 160 picture cards come with the game. They are of good quality, like a nice set of playing cards, but bigger. I haven't ripped or ruined any of mine in all the times it was played. Each card has a different picture on its front and 6 questions about the card on the back of the it. Now, you would think the pictures would be all kiddy-ish, but they aren't, they are Normal Rockwell prints, a lot of old style Superman cartoon frames, photos of food, black and white sketches and lots more. You won't find any Spongebob, Rugrats or Dora here.

The game is easily played. The players begin at the start, and everyone rolls to see who goes first. The player who goes first takes one of the picture cards from the card holder and looks at it for 30 seconds (a sand timer comes with the game). You try to memorize as much as you can in those 30 seconds. When the timer runs out, the player to the left takes the card from Player 1. The first player rolls the di again , and say they get a 3. The player holding the card looks at the back of the card and picks question number 3...i.e. What color is the spool of thread?. The player holding the card is the judge and decides if the answer you give is right or wrong. 99.9% of the time it is extremely obvious as to what the answer is.
So, if the player answered the question right, they would get to move their pawn 3 spaces. They now roll the di again, and if they get a different number they can try and answer that question on the back of the same card. If they roll the same number twice, their turn is over. When they answer a question wrong, their turn is over also.
The players take turns and the first one to reach the Finish circle is the winner.

And that is it. Painless for parents to play for the most part. Plus if you are really ahead of your child and don't want them to get too upset, you answer a few questions wrong. No biggie.

We played this game quite a bit when we got it and I still think it is a good game. I have never seen the adult version of Stare, and I would never state that this is an easy game because it is the Junior version. It is still a challenge to me to get most of the answers right.

A solid 8/10 for me.
