Thread: Re: Cyberboard Box???

Considering that the game fetches hundreds of dollars on the rare occasions one comes up for sale, it wouldn't surprise me. Though from the comments I've read, it's not clear that the game is actually playable without being able to read the Japanese rules, or that it's all that interesting even if you can.

Thread: Session Report

Red/Sun Black Cross Session Report

The following is a write-up of a naval and air scenario from Ad Technos’ Red Sun Black Cross game. The game is an intermediate level operational simulation of a hypothetical conflict between Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in the Indian Ocean. It postulates a world where Japan did not attack Pearl Harbor and the US remained neutral while the Germans were able to conquer Russia.

Scenario: Arabian Gulf Sortie
As World War III breaks out between Germany and Imperial Japan, both the Germans and Japanese find their forces spread out an unprepared for war. In this naval and air only scenario

The German Eastern Fleet’s 1st Carrier Division TF1 (CV’s Graf Zeppelin, Seydlitz, BB Tirpitz, CA Blucher, and a destroyer escort) sorties from Aden. TF2 comprising the pocket battleship commerce raiders Admiral Scheer and Lutzow flee from Goa heading due west. Eastern Fleet’s 1st Flotilla TF3 (BB Frederick the Great, BC Gneisenau, CA Prinz Eugen and destroyers) moves east from Hebak on Socrotra Island.

TF1 4th Carrier Division (Hiryu, Taiho, BC’s Hiei and Kongo, CA Ibuki and a destroyer escort) heads west from Bombay to try and intercept the German commerce raiders. IJN TF2 (Ceylon Garrison Fleet) comprising the dreadnoughts Yamato and Musashi and the battlecruiser Haruna and a destroyer escort weighs anchor from Ceylon and head west as well. An air strike from Soryu finds the fleeing German battleships but the attack force of Grace torpedo bombers are driven off by flak and take heavy casualties.

TF3 German heavy battleships forces engage 4th Carrier division. Long-range Bombay-based Ginga dive bombers locate TF3 and begin their attack runs to be driven off again by heavy flak.

German TF3 engages IJN TF1 at long range and Prinz Eugen lands a hit on the Ibuki but fails to score damage. German destroyers savage and damage their opposite number.

In the return fire, the Kongo and the Hiei bracket the Gneisenau and sink her with plunging fire. The Ibuki lands damaging hits on the Prinz Eugen as well.

The IJN attempts to disengage but despite having the faster fleet, the Germans stay in range as the Frederick the Great targets the Kongo but it’s salvos fall short, while the German DD’s land some hits on the Ibuki but fail to penetrate.

In the return fire, the IJN battleships concentrate on the Prinz Eugen but miss her while the destroyers damage their opposite number

The Japanese succeed in disengaging.

IJN TF2 moves to engage the damaged German Tf3 and succeeds in bringing them to battle

The Yamato and Musashi target the Frederick and the Yamato lands some long range hits but fail to penetrate. The Haguro and Myoko sink the Prinz Eugen and the destroyers sink their opposite number. The Fredrick lands some hits on the Yamato but also fails to penetrate and then the Germans this time disengage successfully.

Turn 2

German TF2 arrives and launches a strike of ME462s against the IJN fleet but fail to find the targets.

IJN TF2 attempts to engage the German carriers but the lumbering Musashi and Yamato are too slow to bring the faster German fleet to battle.

The IJN launches a land-based strike of Ginga bombers who rendezvous with the naval based Reppu fighters from the 4th carrier division. They are intercepted by the Axis ME462s who savage the Ginga squadron and the IJN bombers are again driven off by heavy flak.

Both fleets retire to their respective ports. The IJN win a tactical victory having sunk the Gneisenau, Prinz Eugen and a German destroyer squadron.

Notes on the game system:

There’s no hidden naval movement and ships to ship battles take place initially at long range and then subsequent rounds can take place at short or long range depending on whether or not players want to shift ranges.

Flak seems to be inordinately powerful, but perhaps this is reflective of the late-war heavy AA protection.

Some battleships have immunity zones. For instance, the Frederick the Great would have been invulnerable at short range to the Kongo and Hiei, while the Yamato would be invulnerable to the Frederick de Grosse at long range but not at short range.
