I showed this to some 12-year-olds, who played one game in 5 minutes, then the next, and the next. Never more than 10 minutes.

I played this with my wife, once for three hours.

The better you are, the longer it goes, the meaner the moves, the more fascinating the game!

Thread: Night of the Two Actions part 2

The next game that Abe and I played in the Night of Two Actions was Ramses. I stumbled across Ramses on the geek and realized that all I needed to do to play is print out the rules and board. As pawns, we used the big head statue pawns from Easter Island, which we had just played. The next time, we’ll probably use Go stones since the statues were a little on the big side.

Ramses is a very simple and very evil game. You goal is to either cover three of the five special squares on the board or prevent your opponent from completing a move. Pawns move exactly as many spaces as there are total pawns in their rank or file but can never backtrack. And this is the evil part, you first move one of your own pawns and then your opponents.

The board in Ramses is tight and claustrophobic. It can be very tricky to move an opponent’s pawn in a way that hurts him and helps you. In fact, there are times when the game would be easier if you could choose the order you move the pawns. However, you can’t.

I made a blunder and gave Abe an easy opening to cover his third shrine tile. He offered to let me take it back but I figure that’s part of the learning curve.

I can easily understand why Ramses has a small but strong following. It’s a very strong abstract that is tricky to read ahead. It definitely has a learning curve despite its relatively simple rules.
