Thread: Rush to the Bell: Halli Galli Extreme

I was lucky enough to go to Germany this summer and also lucky enough to be exposed to Halli Galli by the family that billeted us. I had introduced Jungle Speed to the family and they quite enjoyed it and then pulled out their old copy of Halli Galli Junior. We play a few round and I thought that I would for sure look for this game. A week later I was in a toy store and faced down the junior, regular and new extreme versions of the HG family. I took a gamble and grabbed the Extreme. Never having played the basic I can't quite make a direct comparision, but hopefully someone who has played both will chime in and add to this review.
In the box you will find a stick of card and a bell. Bell is placed in the centre of the table to be rung by any played when a card that is up matches another player's. Anyone can ring. On the cards, which are dealt evenly to each player, are fruits (strawberry, lime, plum, bannana) in one, twos or three. Also in the deck are three animals (pig, monkey and elephant). The point of the game is to flip a card from your pile and quickly scan the other player's up cards to see if there is a direct match or an animal that agrees with it's rules. If there is you ring the bell. The animals each have their particular rules. The monkey likes to eat everything except limes. If the monkey comes up and there are no limes showing, ring the bell. The elephant likes everything except strawberries. The pig likes everything, ring whenever he shows up. If you are the first ringer of the bell you collect everyone's face up decks. If you misring, then your face up cards goes under the bell as a bonus for the next correct ringer. Whoever is the last player remaining is the winner.
This is a fun game that is all about speed of hand and visual perception. Quick hands and quick eyes are essential if you are to come out on top. The card are of standard quality and given the amount handling and constant use of cards could have been put on higher quality stock. The bell is well made and I think will take the harsh punishment that it is sure to take. On the whole I would give this game a thumbs up as a little filler of a game that will get your heart pounding again between games of the slower genre, and in this case just about everything is slower.
