turtleback wrote:
No need to feel dumb. I am new to this. I went to a Games Workshop store and nothing really grabbed me and the prices seemed very high. I have spent $80.00 so far for SST and I have almost 60 figures. That seems like a good value.
Well, anything is going to seem high compared to close-out sale prices. Still, GW is more expensive than most. The good news is you're looking for customisability, not 40K game power. So, you'll want to pick up Troop choices that are interesting to you. These are among the cheaper 40K offerings, since they have lower in-game abilities per model. But they are also sold in volume, which means they are made out of easily-modifiable plastic. If you want a Sci Fi look, check out Eldar Guardians, Tau Fire Warriors or Space Marine Tactical Squads.

Other, non-40K options:
* Warmachine is more steampunk than SF, but some of the models can be worked with. Some can't, so make sure before you buy...
* AT-43 might be worth looking at. Pre-painted, in a limited number of poses out of the box. But they are plastic, and should (in theory--I haven't tried) be easy to modify. Price may be an issue, unless you find another close-out sale.
* Star Wars miniatures, another pre-painted plastic option. Can be pricey again, but at least you have the option of picking up cheap commons from the secondary market.
* Zvezda has some SF stuff available. It can be hard to get ahold of, and the figures are sometimes cartoony, but it is cheap and plentiful.

Most minis are made out of lead and/or pewter alloys, which is much more difficult to modify. Not impossible, but for my money you're better off learning to sculpt yourself instead .

Oh, absolutely. I think that is, in part, due to the fact that they're no longer producing it. There was a ton of that stuff for SUPER cheap at Origins.

Thread: I really like these "fiddly" miniatures. Now what?

I recently picked up the core game on ebay and I was very impressed with the way the miniatures go together. I really like the way you can make each figure more individual by how you position his features. I know a number of people feel these figures are to "fiddly", but since I view this as more of a hobby bring on the fiddliness (I'm not sure if I will ever be able to talk my wife into playing this one).

Now here is the point...after picking this game up it appears that it is going out of production. Mongoose has taken it off it's website. I have made a mad dash picking up parts and pieces for the game off ebay, amazon, and even Troll and Toad (though I loath their mark ups). This should keep me happily busy for a while, but I would like to plan for my next system/project. I have looked into Warhammer and from what I have seen the figures are less pose-able than the SST figures, but maybe I haven't come across the right GW line. Also, GW games seem far more expensive than the Mongoose line (I did get very good deals on the SST figures at roughly half MSRP..so, I might be a little spoiled).

Does anyone here have some good suggestions for a miniatures line with as much individualism and bang for the buck as the SST miniatures? I like the science fiction theme (I am a huge Heinlein fan which drew me to this game in the first place), but I am open to other themes as well. Thanks in advance. -David

As with the others, build then paint ... because:

- its easier to build and file a mini to make sure its perfect and then paint it (otherwise any changes you make (filing, whatever) will require touchups)
- the glue bonds much better to metal/plastic than to painted surfaces

Thread: Re: paint before building?

I'd have trouble painting before building because I'm obsessive about filing off mold seams.

However, if you don't care about such things, I could see hitting the warrior bugs with a base color spray, assembling (scrape the paint off surfaces to be glued together before applying glue) then engaging in detail work, drybrushing, washes and so on. It would save a pile of time.

This is my plan when I get around to it; since I was prescient enough to buy a pile of Galoob SSTroopers bugs, etc. when they went on clearance I haven't needed to yet.

Of course, I hear tell that the new second edition will have painted figures . . . but I haven't seen it yet.

Thread: Dumb Question?

I've just recently traded for the basic game, and I'm trying to work out the figure counts. It says the base game comes with 2 8 MI figure squads, but the MI Army Book says a squad is 4 CAP troopers plus a sergeant. Unlike the Arachnid Army Book, which says, for some units, up to X whatevers can be added for +Y each, the MI book does not.

Since I don't have a rulebook from the base game handy, am I just missing something that's in there? I'm adding boxed sets to have about 1000-1200 points of both MI and Arachnid forces. I'm trying to figure out how many points of MI I already have....

Any help would be appreciated!
I haven't heard mention of counters.

Possibilities:
A) the rules have changed enough to eliminate them
B) needed counters come with units
C) counters/templates are cut out/somehow included in the rules
D) a counter/template pack, similar to those by GF9 (or just use the ones by GF9) will be available.

Well, I can see I wasn't remotely helpful, so I'll just move along now.

I see that this is being relaunched with painted minis, which makes it a lot more appealing to me, weak as I am.

I was wondering if it was planned to re-release the starter set, or whether the rules will just be available as a hardback release. No. But you will be able to use the old models. Even though they won't have the same designs.

The models in the basic game are all plastic, tough plastic; some glues won't work very well on them.

Warrior bugs: once you've built 2 or 3 they'll become like second nature. I built 44 in no time at all! Start with the legs and thorax. When that's dry, glue on upper blades, etc.

MI: these are real fiddly bastards! ONLY glue on the faceplates when you've finished painting the figures.

Enjoy!

I have the main box set with 2 Arachnid Warrior Bugs box sets and 1 extra Mobile Infantry Cap Troopers box set. Its a total of 32 bug warriors and 24 Mobile Infantry Cap Troopers. I am willing to let it all go for $70.00 or best offer.

The best part is that these new Starship Troopers minis will be pre-painted NON-collectible minis. You see exactly what you're paying for. None of this ridiculous 1:14 chance with crossed fingers hoping for the one rare you're missing.

Also, if you read the whole gaming report article, Mongoose Publishing is also releasing Battlefield Evolution (I added the BGG entry earlier this week). This is a near future (5 year) combat miniatures game that is also pre-painted and non-collectible.

It looks like my family debt will significantly increase in 2007. I can't wait to pre-order my US (Battlefield Evolution) and MI (Starship Troopers) armies.

See, that's where they went wrong - they thought people would buy the games because they could put on the codpieces!

As an old figure painter, it's interesting to see this new fashion for prepainted miniatures. Obviously there are many companies springing up in China that make this kind of thing affordable. It will be interesting to see how high the quality standard gets. I find the claim that they couldn't tell the difference between the figures they got back and their studio painted figure a bit hard to swallow.

Personally I do like the idea that I will be able to retouch figures like this - adding extra detail and my own stamp to the figures - instead of having to paint from scratch. When spare time is thin on the ground it certainly means the figures will get on the tabletop a lot faster. The flipside is you're getting plastic miniatures instead of metal ones, and I do like the 'heft' of a metal miniature (and usually, the better detail).

I note that Rackham are going the same pre-painted with their new sc-fi system AT-43.

Well, this sounds like a wise move. The fiddly assembly of both Marines and bugs in the original version made it an exercise in frustration. I fell back on using Galoob Troopers rather than trying to get an armored codpiece centered on twenty or thirty plastic guys. Game isn't bad; presentation is a horror.

This change looks like a tacit admission that lots of consumers thought the same. I hope it works out for them; it's a colorful and interesting topic and they are trying to do it right.

This sounds awesome. I've been a tabletop wargamer for years. My current game is 40K (I couldn't find any other wargamers locally except for 40K). I love 40K but it sure seems like a lot of games end up in favor of whoever went first. I agree that 40K turns take a while to resolve, especially in the beginning of the game when everyone has their troops.

This review makes me want to up and buy the game. The reaction rule has me intrigued. Got any pics of the models?
