I too want to know what it is like since I have Midevil I and II. More specifically, I would like to know how long a game with 6 players and all 3 packs is since I want to host it at a gaming convention.

Thread: Re: MidEvil or Zombies?

Hey Steve,

I just figure there are going to be a lot of games that my wife doesn't like but that I love and have friends who will play them with me. Kinda The boys night out games shall we say:p

So I have 3 piles of game

1. games to play with wife and she like
2. games to beg that wife to play that she is just OK with
3. My favorite games - which are not getting played with the wife

OK, this is not totally correct in that Illuminati my wife loves to play, and it is one of my favorite also. So really

3 should be themes I love that my wife won't play :D

You have plenty of time to get another one.

And you got me thinking of getting this game also!

Zombies!!!

Along w/ LNOE & "Zombie Plague" it's my favorite. If you find the out-of-the-box rules not to your liking, then use the Quick(er) Play rules.

I think the game is fine as-is and takes more of a beating than it deserves (Oh, how much FUN hyperbole is!), but the QP rules address pretty much all the issues that people raise with the game & was culled from variant rules that members of the Yahoo group added after the game came out.
---MS

Thanks Tom. You might be right. I probably should have kept LNOE. But I took a chance on a game I thought would get played more (Colosseum). Unfortunately, that one went over like a lead baloon.

NOOOOOOOOOO! You got rid of LNOE, what on earth where you thinking?

Go get it back, for the love of that is holy in this world..................

OK, seriously, so if no one would play LNOE , will these same people play Zombies? You should have waited for the expansions before getting rid of LNOE, sad, sad, sad I tell you.

LNOE rocks, I am loving that one. My wife refuses to play it. I told here It is really a game about robots, but we have the wrong cards that are for this silly zombie game and to just go with it - no luck she will have nothing to do with it :soblue:

Cost means nothing to me, a good game means everything to me - so just watch my collection grow over the next 8 months, I am going for 100 games in my first year here at the BGG - I think I can make it easily. I won't count my Heroscape expansions either, or it would be way to easy. And I will never part with LNOE, end of story.

Steve, I know neither game, so am of no help here, sorry.

Thread: Re: MidEvil or Zombies?

if you're just looking for some quick fun without too much thinking, I think Zombies!!! is a better choice. Despite the beating the game consistently takes here on the geek, it can actually be a lot of fun. I don't find it necessary to make house rules - we usually play vanilla, no speed up rules. Sometimes we make a custom deck to take out some of the "gotcha" cards which can slow the end game.

I think that's really where the problem comes in. There are a lot more cards in the basic set that hurt your opponent than there are that help you. Some of this is a printing error and some of it is just a balance thing. I think one reason people have longer games over time is that they recognize and hoard those power cards. Using the second edition rules is a big help since you don't go through the deck again (once it's exhausted you draw no more cards) and you move double once the helipad is out.

I think MidEvil is the better and more strategic game of the two. The skeletons become no only victory points but also resources. You are forced to decide whether to horde them as victory or to use some as resources. Either approach can win and a lot depends on placement of the resource tokens. If anything, I think MidEvil suffers by being a game related to Zombies!!! Those who have already dismissed Zombies!!! as mindless just see more of the same in MidEvil, not bothering to consider the strategic implications of the skeletons as resource and victory. Those who really enjoy Zombies!!! often fail to see those nuances and thus miss the deeper part of the game.

Neither of them is Puerto Rico, but both are fun games to have in your collection. I think based on your reviews and some of your likes/dislikes, you'll probably prefer MidEvil because of its additional depth.

Thread: Re: MidEvil or Zombies?

They are cheaper for a reason... :gulp: :yuk:

When I first discovered Zombies, I thought it was the most genius thing I'd seen in a long time. After each play, though, it steadily got worse, and eventually my gaming group refused to touch it anymore. I picked up MidEvil, too, to see if it was an improvement, but that was nixed as well after only a single play.

The problem is, despite being campy fun, both games are pretty poorly written in general and practically require house rules in order to play them at all. I have since purged them from my collection.

However, if you're looking for a lesser of two evils, go with Zombies; MidEvil is simply brutal.

...out of the two, midEvil seems to fix some of the problems that the zombie system had, especially the awkwardness of weapons.
...except that you have to pay already collected skeletons in order to use a majority of the weapon cards. When it's a race to kill 30, who wants to give any up?

The alternate way to win (rather than reaching a helipad) is to recover and return the Necronomicon to the beginning altar space. Logically, players will be fighting over this and gunning for the person carrying it. Unfortunately, the PvP combat rules are very unclear and make what could be tense competition into a frustrating experience.

Stay away. Far away. I haven't tried any of the other zombie-themed games, but they can't possibly be worse.

Like the some of the movies, I'd just nuke both titles and move on...
Thread: Re: MidEvil or Zombies?

Zombies!!! & MidEvil are very similar indeed. To cut a very long story short, this series of games is reasonably amusing if you are a fan of George A Romero films. The cards are funny, the theme is great, but the game is barely a game at all.

Seriously.

I can't imagine anyone really wanting to play this more than a couple of times.

out of the two, midEvil seems to fix some of the problems that the zombie system had, especially the awkwardness of weapons. getting a weapons card but not being able to use it until you got to a specific building to actually get it (if the building was even on the table that is).

I personally think last night on earth is a much better game than both, (I would never trade mine away), but if you want an other zombie alternative, mall if horror is pretty good, and very different.

Thread: Re: MidEvil or Zombies?

I would prefer MidEvil, but in practice I found there wasn't enough to do. See, in Zombies!!! (basic game), the whole game is determined by who places the Heliport tile, and where you are at that point - everything before that is preamble. You can houserule it, or, better, you can play one of the supplements that doesn't suffer from the street-maze effect - Zombies!!! 4 is my preference, but it's got Zombie dogs, not Zombie people... Add the people back in (keep the dogs too, mind you), and it's a winner.

Why not MidEvil? It has no street-maze, it's very like Zombies!!! 4 in it's map in fact. But in the games I played, there were far too few skeletons - we decided to houserule DOUBLING the value of skeletons on each map tile to make it more interesting. The castle map seems to suffer from the same problem, there just aren't that many skeletons... This is, ironically, caused partly by the lack of the street-maze - there's more open ground, so the map is less crowded.

Thread: MidEvil or Zombies?

So which one of these is the better game, MidEvil or Zombies? Feel free to include expansions in that judgement. I had Last Night on Earth and loved it, but nobody would play, so I traded it away. I'm regretting that move and I feel like I want a zombie game again. These options are a lot cheaper than LNOE.
