Thanks for the replies, everyone! I tried Ace of Aces - Powerhouse Series over the past week on vacation, and my boy was frustrated because he had a hard time scoring points on me. I don't think he has a feel for that game, which can be difficult because of the cockpit view.

And, of course AoA:PS is not a solo game.

I will definitely look to get WoW:BD to play soon.

Frank

(thanks for the link to Fire from the Sky - just added that to my wantlist)

The solo scenarios are planes vs. ground emplacements. I've enjoyed it each time. The game is better, as most are, with a real live opponent. However, I picked up BD with the intention of only playing solo. My wife will play most any game with me, but she found WoW: Famous Ace's game's movement mechanism too imprecise ( that's what I get for marrying an engineer I suppose )

I really like the subject matter and the game design and graphics. BD is cool because it adds blimps amd enhanced elevation rules. It is a very nice game.

There isn't a lot of bookkeeping. Each player tracks damage to their craft on a playsheet. There are some continuous effects that may occur ( smoke, jamming, fire ) that require some tracking. Players will also have to occasionally track the type of manuever their plane last performed. There are handy tokens for all these things. This may/may not be too much for your son.

I'd heartily reccomend this game. It is eye-catching. Perhaps your son will see you having fun playing a solo game and be intrigued enough to try it.

I play this with my 8yo daughter. She thinks it is great fun. There is very little down time or book keeping. The game moves along a fast pace and is very simple in concept (leave out the altitude rule though).

It can get a little stalemated on a 1 on 1 plane dogfight.

Other than that she cant wait to play it.

Give it a try with your son. im sure he will love it.

I play this as a solo game every now and then.

I love it..

There are some solo scenarios where you have to take out some ground forces or a balloon, and you are opposed by AA, flak, and soldiers in the trenches. These are great fun, and quite hard.

Now playing with two sides of planes in the air is a little difficult. I usually plan one side's plane, then the other side's, and on the next turn, I switch (AB, BA, etc). It isn't as ideal as playing a real person where you don't know what they are actually going to do, but I find it to still be fun.

And 10 years old? WoW is GREAT for this age IMO. There is little to NO record keeping, and the turns are quick, quick, quick. I could totally see little ones having fun with it.

'course, depends on the maturity of the children as well...

You could learn it solo, have fun, and if he looks interested, give him one plane to operate. Teach him how to play, then if he takes to it, add more planes and you will have your ideal gaming partner!! OH, and don't add any of the optional rules until you/he have gotten the basic "fly around and shoot" mechanism. Honestly, the optional advanced rules add SOME realism, A LOT of time, and not as much fun to a game.

Good Luck!

Thanks, This one had me confused too! Will there be a way to get just the updated cards that have changed in DOW? I bought two sets to play multiple A & B planes at the same time, but they are both the early sets(before the new version,or the boosters came out) so my Wildcat etc cards are all now wrong. Will updated cards be included in FIRE FROM THE SKY set? I hope there is a way without buying yet another copy of the same set.
Thanks again

I was just about to introduce tailing with my son when I noticed that you only check for tailing on the first card of a turn. I understand the neccesity with there only being 3 cards in your hand at any one time. But has anyone come up with any way of offering tailing on every card? Maybe picking a random couple of cards from your deck or something.

If you don't, why not?

Yes, we use them everytime.

The rules aren't hard, and require very little book keeping. As a player aid, I made a simple tracking system. Each aircraft has a track corresponding to the color of its player aid board, and two tokens are placed for each aircraft. One records level, the other records altitude in thousands of feet.

This way, aircraft with quick climbing rates have a chance against two-seaters by diving at them to shoot and quickly recovering altitude.

FA and WYB! came out with no altitude rules (nor altitude cards, of course). The rules have been intriduced in BD. So we put in BD all the cards for the previuos decks: with the cards in BD you can then also fly all the planes in a box of FA and in a box of WYB!. Boosters and airplane packs came later, so their maneuvre decks are complete with altitude cards.

Thread: Re: Why are balloons useful?

Actually the main scope was observation. Anyway they were used also to raise nets and cables as an obstacle for low altitude planes, to defend ground target: in October 1916 Italy founded the 1a Sezione Aerostatica Speciale to defend Venice with rows of balloons doing that moved on rafts to be able to get in different parts of the town. Other Italian target in other parts of the nation were difended in the same way. British and German did the same:
http://www.bbrclub.org/development_of_balloon_command.htm
In Venice even explosive obstacles with balloons and mines have been experimented.

The tecnique of barrage balloons was more estensively used in WWII: think to the typical image of London skies... Well, they started in London duering WWI using Italian Avorio Prassone balloons.
The typical WWII Britis Balloon, by the way, is a developement of the Avorio Parssone, that was judged "the most efficioent of the war" (see the essay opening the "Janes' Finghing Airctaft of World War One" book were a picture of a balloon apron is published).

From my memory of Burning Drachens, it is not that balloons give any advantage in the air battle; it is that they are what the battle is all about.

The side that owns the ballons must defend them, the other side must attack them; furthermore they must try to destroy them before the balloons are lowered to the ground and made safe.
I am really sorry if this is stated elsewhere or written clearly in the rules, but I can't find an answer. I realize the balloons were important for observational purposes during the war, but how does that translate in the game.
Thread: Re: Altitude Rules: Do you use them?

Another reason I like the altitude rules in the WWII incarnation is because that game has tailing rules more favorable to the one doing the tailing. So if you're in an advantaged position you don't have to just guess so much as to whether your target is going to dive or not, you can follow him. I think this makes the whole situation more interesting. In a leading/trailing situation, the follower has a little more advantage, but the target has a few more options to get away.

In general, I find the ground attack scenarios more interesting than the dogfights for multiplayer games, so I like to use the altitude rules when we can. But I'd agree that in straight-up dogfights, the complexity can usually be ditched.

In dogfights no, as I don't use most of the optional rules (usually just special damages) because I personally like to keep the game as quick and simple as possible.

In ground attack scenarios, ballon busting missions, when using AA and such yes because I think they spice up that kind of game.
With WoW, we use the altitude rules when we use the minis, which obviously can show altitude nicely. If we're just using the cards, usually we don't bother, even in the Burning Drachens scenarios with the balloon being lowered. We just play to a clock. Altitude does make the game more interesting, though, and is another reason to like the minis.

On the other hand, I do always use altitude with WoWoWWII, even though we don't have minis.

Latest word from Nexus is "June," which would be pretty soon.

The Feb. miniatures package made it to the US in late May.

Based on previous deliveries/schedules, I think it will be a near run thing that you can have your bombers by New Years, but it might happen.

Use the stats off the various plane cards or even just one of the spreadsheets online. It really only gets tricky to proxy the minis when the firing arc of the plane is different. For example, the De Haviland D.H. 4 and the Roland C.II have rear arcs of different width.)

capadotia wrote:
Richtofen's plane only has a rear arc. Wow, that's even more screwed up than I thought. If you know the stats for the variants you can easily play a different "pilot" with any of the minis, provided you have the right decks.

With the Roland it could make a difference though. If the two versions with a rear gunner have the rear firing arc on the base and the Richthofen doesn't then it could be difficult to proxy the Richthofen for one of the other Rolands. It would be much easier to play the Richthofen variant with one of the other models than vice versa.

Avenell wrote:
Hello Mr Bentley, I just bought Burning Drachens and two mini's, so perhaps I can clear up your confusion.

Burning Drachens is for playing with 2 people. It provides you with two control boards (NOT essential to playing, but nice to have), two maneuver decks (so you can fly two planes), an A-damage deck (so you can fly up to four twin firing planes), a ton of balloons and AA guns etc, and no mini's.

With just burning drachens, you can only fly two planes (just cards) because you only have two maneuver decks.

However, getting a mini gets you a nifty looking miniature plane, a plane card to go with it, and the maneuver deck you need to fly that plane. If you have the damage deck to go with it (which you do, the A-damage deck), then you are fine.

So, if you bought the four mini's from Famous Aces, you now have ZERO reason to buy FA.

My advice is to start out with Burning Drachens (which you've done), and get the four mini's from Famous Aces, which it looks like you plan to do. Then play that and see how much you like the game. If you love it, your friends love it and you want more, then it's time to get Watch Your Back! (WYB).

Why WYB? Because the only thing you are lacking now is an A-firing deck for single machinegun planes, and buying WYB is the only way to get it. Dont feel too gipped about not getting it in Burning Drachens, there are rules to figure out ways around it, but WYB will give you the A-damage deck you need plus introduce Two-seater planes to your game.

From that point forward, you'll understand enough from looking at all the other mini's and expansions to understand what you need and how to get it.

Enjoy

If I get the 4 minis I mentioned, will that suffice for Burning Drachens (including solo play) PLUS work for a 3-4 player expansion, whichever one would work with those mentioned?

YES! In fact, Burning Drachens + 4 mini's will let you play easily with 3-4 people without requiring anything else.

Thanks, Josh, I really, really appreciate your input. This has cleared up a lot for me.
I did indeed get those 4 minis mentioned...I'm hopefully going to get to play this weekend (holiday - Memorial Day! Yayyyyy!)

Thanks,
jrbentley
