Thread: User Review

Pokemon Master Trainer Game, is a very light and linear RPG style game for children.

The game comes packed with a rulebook, story book, a die cut sheet of damage counters and coins, 4 trainer checklists to keep track of all the Pokemon you catch during the game, and of course cards representing Pokemon.

The driving force of the game is the Pokemon battle. Each Pokemon has 2 attacks that have a "to hit" range based on a single D6 roll. If the attack hits it's target, there is a set amount of damage it will do. Some attacks offer a coin flip to do more damage or grant a second attack.

The story provided in the book is very straight forward and does not allow the players to deviate from the path. When dealing with children this is not all that bad. The story book covers about the first 3 or 4 episodes of the TV series. If the children your playing have seen these episodes they will be sucked right into the game play.

The game only comes with a handful of Pokemon however, the plan was to release a series of these games with more Pokemon to come, but Wizards of the Coast lost the publishing rights to Pokemon and thus the expansions were scraped. It's too bad the rest of these never got made, it's not a bad little game to introduce small children to RPG style games.

The story book provided with the game is also rather short, but it's not too difficult to come up with more story lines to follow. There is also a wealth of TV episodes and Manga style comics to provide inspiration for further and more colorful story telling.

The biggest problem with the game is that the combat system is not that deep, even for 4 and 5 year olds. With each Pokemon only having 2 attacks they get old really quick, as well as the battles having no tactical aspect what so ever.

In the end my children and I liked this game well enough to play through the base storybook and make up quite a bit of our own stories.

I would recommend this game to anyone with small children who show a desire to play storytelling type games, and like Pokemon... of course.
