Thread: Session Report

First impressions of Xxxenophile, sessions report.

Starting with a two-player game using standard rules and standard 12 card layout.

Player 1(Green): Mike (male)
Player 2(Black): Melanie (female)

Cards: Two 50-card decks.

We randomly chose 50 cards each, to track the decks we put the decks in different color sleeves (Green and Black).

Shuffling our decks we each dealt 6 cards onto the board. The cards on the board where shuffled together and laid out in the standard 12 card pattern.

Starting with player 2 we took turns flipping and spinning cards. First card to pop was 'Marquis de Sade' (Lose one turn. Enjoy it.) by player 2. Since we where both getting into the game and reading the flipped cards it wasn't until a few turns had passed that we realized that player 2 hadn't missed a turn. (Made a note to keep track of actions that affect players on subsequent turns)

The game progressed as we took turns popping cards and placing them into our score pad. Player 2 concentrated on popping characters to run up a quick score. Player 1 tried for a mix of characters and gizmos. The gizmos 'buffing' his game play. The next event was when player 1 popped the gizmo 'Babe Magnet' (Throw this card as far as you can. If it lands where you can find it, pick it up and throw it again). Since this was the first non-game related effect it set the tone for the rest of the game. Player 1 was just going to place it in his toy box but player 2 jokingly enforced the effect so player 1 had to get up and throw the card across the room then pick it up and throw it again before placing it in his toy box. That might not have seen like an important event but it did help the case for following the effects when Player 2 popped 'Lazlo Exhibitionist from Neptune' (Remove a big article of clothing). So off came Player 2's shirt soon to be followed by shoes when she double popped 2 cards one of them being Jack Tarr (Remove one article of clothing).

While playing the Settings cards proved a little difficult to keep track of. When they came in to play they could easily be mistaken for characters or gizmos so effects that should have been in play were often left out until the card was actually popped and the setting was taken out of play.

Player 2 soon pulled away in points with a 10 to 20 point lead it looked pretty clear that player 2 would win by sheer numbers, but when it came down to the last couple of moves before the endgame, the only thing that tipped the balance in player 1's favor was popping the gizmo 'Sex Drive' (Every Gizmo in every player's Toy box is worth exactly two points towards your score). The extra 18 points sent player 1 over the 100 mark to win the game.

The endgame proceeded with each player popping cards to grab the cards left of the board.

Final score:
Player1:
103 points, 52 cards in deck (38 green 14 Black)

Player2:
96 points, 48 cards in deck (36 Black 12 Green) Lost 2 articles of clothing.

To sum up, it looks as if you can certainly play Xxxenophile with differing gaming styles like buffing and point grabbing. With more understanding of the available card powers and a little creative paring of card effects you can build strategies to reach your Xxxenophile goals.

Mike
Thread: User Review

For over fifteen years Xxxenophile has been synonymous with the best in x-rated comic books aimed at both a male and female audience. Even now the name Xxxenophile brings many a smirk and knowing smiles to current and past collage goers. In the summer of 96 riding on the success of the comic book Xxxenophile the collectable card games was released. The card game strives to keep the enjoyable elements of the comic book while still leaving the game simple to understand and play.

To win the game you must get over 100 points. To get points you need to 'pop' cards using a modified dominos style matching method. When Cards are popped they may require players to perform certain tasks like pop other cards or even give the opposing players cards.

The game keeps ties with the original comic by having a strong adult overtone with more than a little innuendo. The innuendo is both in the artwork and in the required tasks from popped cards. The artwork more often than not includes topless nudity and strong suggestive themes, not quite the same x-rated artwork but certainly can be classed as adult.

Games can be played with two or more players. If you have trouble finding players the high quality artwork and naughty themes makes it ripe for collecting and trading all 270 cards.

Unfortunately the game is mostly out of print and sold out but can usually be found ion the Internet for sale or trade.
I used the differing color deck protectors to track the progress of the exchanges through the games, now I've played a few games of Xxxenophile and I have to agree with mlvanbie about NOT using the differing color deck protectors. The endgame became more and more like an opponents card grab.

Mlvanbie's other point about not showing which side is 'up' can be overcome by putting half the cards in upside down. I certainly think that it's better to use the card protectors than not.

Mike
mclove (#62649),

Um, in the end game you aren't supposed to be distinguishing decks. Deck protectors are handy for combining this game with Girl Genius but they shouldn't mark card backs according to ownership, nor should they show which side of a card is `up'.

The fronts of cards are okay to mark in any way you see fit, such as a big black X to mark ownership if you aren't going to divide the cards according to the rules. Ending up with good cards while also winning is something of a challenge and some cards are intended to give great power to those who don't mind giving cards to their opponents.

Thread: Getting to play XXXenophile.

Way back there, almost 10 years ago I had heard or Xxxenophile as a game. I had read the comic book and liked the mix of adult and funny. At that time I never got around to buying any of the cards, let alone play the game. Years on I got back into playing CCG's and I thought I'd try and find Xxxenophile. Every place I looked told me the same thing... That it was sold out and out of print. After searching the Internet I found that my best bets for finding some cards were ebay.com and Warehouse23.com. Warehouse23 still has a few starter decks for sale.

I decided to try bidding on a few Xxxenophile decks. I ended up with an impressive deck of 400 cards. First impressions held out with my expectations (humorous with great artwork).

While the cards in my new Xxxenophile deck didn't show any signs of wear the cards felt 'dry'. The cards didn't slide well together, they cards would stick to each other when being dealt.

To get round the 'dryness' I decide to sleeve them. Standard Ultra pro deck protectors are a very tight fit for the Xxxenophile cards. I even had a batch of 50 deck protectors that just didn't fit the cards. I'd suggest that you bring along a spare card for sizing when buying sleeves.

Deck protectors made all the difference. No issues with dealing or shuffling. Using differing colored sleeves made distinguishing decks easier when it came down to shuffling and the endgame phase of Xxxenophile.

All in all I'm happy with the cards I got. I'll write a summary of some of the Xxxenophile games.

Mike

Thread: Alternate setup

This is an alternate setup for Xxxenophile I have been toying around with in my head for a few days now that (I think) should increase the amount of strategy needed in thsi otherwise very luck-based game. Please try it out and let me knwo how it worked for you.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Instead of building the board in the familiar cross pattern, the cards which would make up the board are shuffled, and dealt out in front of each player face-down in lines, alternating horizontal and vertical orientations, so that one card's long edge touches another card's short edge. (i.e., alternating "tapped" and "untapped" cards).

Follow the turn order normally, up to and including rotating a card. After you have rotated a card, you then choose one card out of your line of cards to match up to one card of the opposite orientation (horiz. vs. vert.) in your opponent's line of cards. If the symbols match, then the cards pop as per the original rules.

As in the original rules, you MUST match cards to pop even if it is a detrimental pop. You are not required to spin to make a pop possible, however.

Follow all othe rules as normal. You must replace any and all cards you have popped (unless a card says otherwise).

If it no matches can be made from the cards that are available, the board is frozen. Both players add one face-down card to their lines from the top of their decks, and then the player whose turn it is collects the cards and shuffles them, and then redeals them out into two face-down lines again, and then play proceeds to the next player.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Let me know what you think.

Shidara
