I was going through this very helpful guide which confirmed to me that everything worked the way I thought it did until I came to this example which confused me somewhat.

Card: First Semester Party
Prerequisites: Friend
Effects: Sex, Alcohol, Drugs, Friend
Resolution:
•	You select A as your prerequisite friend. No one plays Call markers, so you will take A to the event as your prerequisite friend.
•	You select B as your effect friend.
•	c plays a Call marker. You decide not to counter with another Call marker, and will take c to the event as your effect friend.
•	You advance on Alcohol and Drugs, and add a Sex marker to the anonymous sex field of your board.

Everything ok up to this point!

•	Both B and c advance on Alcohol and Drugs, and add Sex markers to the anonymous sex fields of their boards.
•	B and c become friends.

Shouldn't this be A and c that advance their tracks and become friends? A as the prerequisite friend and c as the person that played their call marker to come instead of B that you chose?

tejmo wrote:
So what is the difference between the "broken heart" icon and the "single" icon at The bottom of a card?

Nothing. This seems to be a sort of inconsistency in the iconography. Both the German and the English rules list these two icons "side by side" when explaining their use as an effect and make no distinction between them (and this is the only case in the rule book where two icons are listed side by side).

Actually it is like this (I think) as a prerequisite:

The single icon just means you have to be single.(If you never had a relationship, or if you have an ex or if you are separated.)

The broken heart means you have to have had a relationship wich is now broken.(you have to have an ex or be separated)

Big difference.

The relationships (girl-/boyfriend, lover, husband/wife) can break up and a change but even divorced partners also count as friends.

Greetings

- Arne -

Thread: Wanted in Trade: Funny Friends and Fearsome Floors!

I'll be honest... I really dig Friedemann Friese's games. I like both his mechanics, the artwork, and the general humor and lightheartedness that tends to go along with them (aside from Power Grid, of course).

That being said, I really want to get a copy of, at the very least, Funny Friends and Fearsome Floors. I really want to try and trade for them, and would love to get both in one trade. My trade list is flexible, so if there is something not exactly on my trade list that you're interested in, please ask.

Again, feel free to shoot me a geekmail if you're interested! Thanks!

The prereg seems to contradict the star text.

I have yet to find an official answer for this one. The way I've been playing it is that you bring two persons who do not already know each other, one of which must be a current friend, and those two persons fall in love with each other (and all three gain smoke). But I'm pretty sure this is not what was intended.

We played it as a friend of yours (the pereq) introduces you to a new friend (the effect) with whom you hit it off (ending up in a relationship) and all three of you gain a level of smoking.

Every person mentioned on a played card is always affected, too. It doesn't matter if it is just a friend, a lover or ex-lover. (This rule applies with the exception of life goal cards that are somewhat "private" and never affect others).

So if you say to your lover: "Let's just be friends" you'll both loose your relationship and both will get sad.

As an exception this is not the case when writing poetry because your ex doesn't know about it.

Best regards
Marcel-André
Thread: Does a Prerequisite Partner or Ex Reap a Card's Effects

Man, just when I though I had all of this game's intricacies figured out, this one pops up.

If a prerequisite of a card is that you are in a relationship or have an ex, does your partner (or ex) "accompany" you to the event (as friends do) and reap the event's effects?

Here's a specific example:

----------------------------------------
Let's Just Be Friends
Prerequisite: Relationship (A)
Effect: Grief, Broken Relationship (A)
----------------------------------------

Would the person I am in a relationship with also advance on grief?

Here's another:

----------------------------------------
Give an Ex-partner a 2nd Chance
Prerequisite: Ex (A)
Effect: No grief, Relationship (A)
----------------------------------------

Would your ex (now your fiancé or happily married spouse) also set Grief to 0?

Nothing in the rules seems to support this conclusion. However, look at this card:

----------------------------------------
Write Poetry
Prerequisite: Ex
Effect: Grief(*), Wisdom(*), Alcohol(*)
* No effect on ex
----------------------------------------

Why would this card need the caveat unless, typically, these effects WOULD apply to the ex (or partner) you used as a prerequisite?

Grr,
Matthew

Thread: A Few Clarifications Please

Sorry if this was already covered but BGG is running slow and I didn't have time to go through all the posts.

1) When making a new friend the rules say you can (this is the icon with the two people drinking) choose a player or a neutral character. Does this mean you can make another player a friend without trading in a call marker?

2) if you have a card that involves a friend such as cigarette after, which results in a smoke and sex with that friend. If you select a player character for this card, do both player's get the sex marker and increase their smoke token?

3) I am still confused on the off tokens, what can you not do with a player's character without trading this in? Once they are your friend, do you need their permission to do anything with them?

Thanks!

Thread: Re: secure relationships and auction of life cards.

1)
The way we play it (manual not at hand):
Suppose, you (A) are in a stable relationship with B, and you have a friend (C).

C plays a card that turns a friend into a relationship. If no-one plays a telephone marker, she can choose any of her existing friends. However, getting you (A) into a relationship with C would break your stable relationship with B, therefore, C has to choose another friend (or can't play the card if you are the only one).

However, if YOU play the same card, you can enter a new relationship, thereby automatically ending your existing relationship, even if it's stable.

In summary: A stable relationship can only be broken by one of the partners playing a card that takes him- or herself out of the relationship.

We have played it this way:

Any separation/divorce of a secure partnership that involves a third party constitutes an attack from the outside, and therefore cannot be played by anyone if a partner doesn't agree. Thus, the only way in these cases to

a) Separate from an "Engaged" partnership is to first intensify the partnership to "Married", then separate.

b) Separate from a "Happily Married" partnership is to play a card that has the divorce effect.

Technically your version may be correct though, as the rules do not make a clear distinction between dissolvement and separation.

Thread: Re: Help sheet regarding card interactions

Here's a little help-aid that lays out the various card interaction rules as I understand them. If you see any errors, please point them out. I'll upload the final version to the File section when all is said and done.

A good job. I've played this game with 2 different groups and this whole gaining friends business has been a real problem with both, even causing considerable downtime as players argue on the correct interpretation of the rules. For those who can't get their heads around it quickly I would even suggest to choose one interpretation first, stick to it, and then study the matter in more detail later, for future games.

This whole section (friends & partnerships) in the rules is very sloppily written. It's a prime example of someone writing about a concept that they are very familiar with and not considering enough that people reading the rules will be learning of the concept for the first time. Simply sticking to terms would have gone a long way. (Maybe lack of proper playtesting with the version of rules that actually got printed, or a translation problem?) I would rate this as the 3rd worst example of sloppy rules I've encountered.

Even the example given in this section has a mistake; it implies that both the yellow and light blue players have their respective call markers left, yet are already friends, which shouldn't be possible.

Thread: A Lighter Game with Aspects of Role Playing

Introduction

There are a few ways to look at Funny Friends. Each player receives a set of goals, and attempts to fulfill those goals by getting life events that move them in the "right" direction. You can look at the game as a Eurogamer, a Role Player, or a Casual Gamer. I honestly think it has something for everyone.

Eurogamer

There may not be any wooden cubes, but each player has a bunch of round wooden markers and a pile of cardboard chits. If you ignore the theme, Funny Friends is all about resource management. Each player's sheet consists of tracks: smoking, drinking, drugs, money, sickness, obesity, grief, wisdom, and knowledge. Your goals require you to have a certain combination of on these tracks (e.g. 2 money, 1 sickness). Each track starts at 0, and you raise it by taking cards.

The neat mechanic is that when you reach 3 of something, whenever you would get a 4th you are instead taken to 0 in a different track. For example, if you would get a 4th level of Drugs, you instead take your Money to 0. This can be used to prevent other players from reaching their goals (forcing them to take a level of Drugs) or to complete goals that require 0 in a track (many do).

You obtain cards in the first round by laying out a set of cards and taking turns choosing one. Passing first gives you more money to bid in subsequent rounds. After the first round, players take turns choosing a card to put up for auction. This adds an interesting bidding dynamic, and an element of money management. As in the first round, the sooner you pass the more money you get to bid with.

The last gaming twist are the rules for "calling a friend". At the beginning of the game, each player receives one token for each other player. When a card involves other people they may be neutrals, or other players. Tokens can be used to force another player to suffer the effect of a card you just took, or allow you to receive the effects of a card another player just took. This introduces an interesting element of player interaction.

Role Player

Many games have theme, but the theme is often subsumed by the mechanics of game play. Funny Friends avoids that through amusing graphics and helpful icons.

At the beginning of the game, you receive a set of five goals. These goals give you an idea about the character you'll be playing. You can accomplish them in any order, but which order would make the most sense? Through the course of the game you'll use life experiences to tell the story of your character. There will be twists and turns, the good along with the bad.

One of the unique features of Funny Friends is that your goals won't be all happy-shiny-rosy. One of your goals may be to die miserable and alone, or lose your faith. It's not about being the best person or being perfect, but about telling the story of a character's life. By including some of the darker comedy we see in life, your character can take on real depth and personality.

Funny Friends is great for those who enjoy watching dramas, telling stories, or playing a character. It's a well-themed way of getting them used to the mechanics of a board game. More importantly, it's a game they'll be sure to enjoy.

Casual Gamer

At it's core, Funny Friends is not a deeply serious game. There's a random element to which goals you're dealt and which life events come up. It combines enough strategy to make it interesting with enough randomness to avoid being deterministic. The cards and goals focus on humor, and the interactions with other players can be hilarious to imagine. The best part of the game is going around the table reading off your stories at the end. Because goals are dealt randomly, your straight-laced friend could be telling the story of a cultist or a rock-and-roll star.

The art and theme are integrated so that it's easy to sit back and enjoy the game. Figure out which icons you need more of, and bid on them! Someone who's really more game averse could just sit back and pick interesting life events to tell a story. In Funny Friends it isn't about who wins as much as the stories you tell.

Overall Rating: 10/10

Thread: Re: Variant: Choosing Initial Goals

I thought about this, but my group opted against it for fear of making the play too short and unbalanced (good to hear it was still manageable for you all).

Another similar variant we've though to employ is to keep hand information open from the beginning. In real life, my friends know my goals. Not sure why they can't in a game.

This allows for players to muck with each other more in regards to the forced participation mechanic, but - as I implied - we haven't play tested this idea yet.

Anyhow, regarding yours, we might just try this sometime soon.

Thread: Variant: Choosing Initial Goals

I love Funny Friends. It's a great game to come up with hilarious stories and screw with your friends (metaphorically and literally). At the beginning of each game, players are randomly dealt five Life Goals. The winner is the first one to complete all five. Some goals are easier than others, and sometimes the cards just hate you.

As a variant, we tried playing a game where each player started with 10 Life Goals and chose five. Players will still required to choose one from each of the five categories, but that gave them a little more leeway to choose interesting or synergistic goals. The thinking was that adding some flexibility would lead to more coherent stories and a more fun game.

Because each player was given greater control over the path they followed, the game was significantly shorter. There were fewer twists and turns, and players often achieved two (or three!) goals in a row. While I don't think this variant unbalanced the game, it did make it significantly shorter. This might be a good alternative to ensure a quick game.

Personally, I prefer the original rules. Those unexpected twists and divergent goals make the game more fun. Sometimes your story doesn't quite make sense, but more often than not it's an exciting roller-coaster ride.

Thread: Re: Recommendation?

Our experience was that the rules were exceptionally hard to figure out in a few key places. Spent a lot of time reading them over and over, and then went hunting online for clarifications, and eventually put that to use in an excruciating practice round until we finally decided we had the problematic rules down properly. I was happy with the game after that, but not everyone felt the time and effort was worth it (about 50% agreed it was worth the pain of deciphering the rules).

If you *do* get the game, I suggest studying the rules and doing a practice round by yourself, then read up online to fill in any gaps. Present the game to others only after you've completely mastered how to play. This way the game will sink or swim on its own merits instead of rules ambiguities.

I honestly can't say there is another game like it out there.

I hope this helps.

LA

This is a great review. The style is entertaining, but doesn't get in the way of the critique, something that often seems a difficult balance.

Thread: Re: German or U.S. version?

It depends...if I was buying a new copy of this game I would probably buy a US one and make pasted up versions of the missing German cards. Some of my favourite cards were changed in the US release (the original heavy petting is great ) but I think having the language on the card really adds to the humour. I had a German copy pasted up to that end, but it's a huge amount of work. I think it would be much easier to just start out with an English one, and then make replacements for what you're missing.
