Thank you for your help.
I also sent an email to Atlas Games.

I am really enjoying Dungeoneer.
Have the Haunted Woods of Malthorin and this is now my second Dungeoneer purchase.

Who knows ... maybe I'll pick up more at Orgins next week.

Thread: Re: Differences

The rules are still consistent for the most part. There are two mechanics that are small changes to the base set. First, there are number of monsters that bump up there ability to attack/hinder the heroes based on the heroes level in certain terrain. Second, there are scrolls. One shot, short duration items that, in addition to any other beneficial affects, heal the hero of a wound or two. A most welcome addition to the game from the hero's perspective.

Are there any changes/differences in the rules?

I just picked up this set and the rule sheet was missing from the box.

I do have the latest download Dungeoneer rules.

For what I gathered here on BBG, the cards numbered 1 are easier than those numbered 2.

Is that the only thing mentioned in the DotFD rules?

thanks ... taz

Thread: Here be dragons!

Before I start, if you're looking for reviews on the game play in Dungeoneer, you should read this review of "Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich lord" first.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/1026948#1026948

OVERVIEW
Dragons of the Forsaken Desert (DotFD) is a desert-and-dragons-themed deck, and the 5th deck in the Dungeoneer series. You like dragons? Well, there's lots of them here. Lots and lots of them. Just counting the number of times the word "Dragon" turns up in this deck would make your head spin. There's dragon-boons; dragon-treasures; dragon-locations; and of course, dragons themselves. "Tough little beasties that have 3 Life on average and would rip yer head off as soon as they look at ye," as Kron Axereaver might say.

In this deck, we also see the introduction of an interesting race of monsters called the Throg. According to Thomas, they're the orc-equivalent of the Dungeoneer world (yeah, yeah, Vault has an "Ork Shaman" as a Hero, but according to his back-story, he's from another dimension, so he doesn't count).

In Dragons, we also see the beginnings of Thomas's stance of introducing more duplicate cards into Dungeoneer. This might be a sticking point to some of us who've played since Tomb, but face it, dudes, we've been spoilt rotten by all the previous releases of Dungeoneer. With only one artist at the helm, producing unique artwork for every card in a new deck would mean that we'll be seeing a new Dungeoneer deck a year. The man's gotta eat, people - so let's cut him some slack.

On a side note, the Dragons deck has a nifty little feature - each card is marked with the Dragon deck symbol along with a number 1 or 2. Using this, you can split up the double-deck into a '1' single-deck, or '2' single-deck; the '1' deck is supposedly easier than the '2' deck. By themselves, a single-deck has unique cards in it; so if you're willing to play with just a single-deck, you've got your unique cards right there. Personally, I've found playing Dragons as a single-deck a much more enjoyable experience as compared to playing it as a double-deck.

I find the Dragons deck to be very heavy on terrain-based effects. Terrain-based effects are not new (i.e. we've seen the Darkling Thief in DotWW have the ability to hold 1 extra card on an Urban space), but these sort of effects abound in this deck, which I feel make the game rather cumbersome.

HEROES
Groluk (Ogre Barbarian) Draw and keep 1 additional card on your Discard/Draw Phase if you end your turn on a Desert space.
Melee-heavy hero who has the same special ability as Sela the Darkling Thief in DotWW, except that it works on Desert spaces instead of Urban spaces. Groluk is one of the heroes themed specifically for this deck, so he might not be so useful when in combined deck games. But, like Sela, if you're just playing this deck, he really shines.

Sharna (Human Dragon Slayer) +1 to all attacks against Dragons
Another hero specifically-themed for this deck, but plays better in combined games given that dragons will pop-up everywhere.

Redark Noman (Human Arcanist) As a Response, you may pay # of Glory up to the Peril value of 1 Dragon played against you; that Dragon costs # additional Peril or returns to opponent's hand. Limit once per turn.
Redark's ability is a new mechanic, unique to this deck, but rather questionable. Someone pointed out that if you played a wounded Dragon from your Dungeonlord Pack against Redark who uses this ability, according to the wording, this Dragon goes back into your Hand instead of your Pack, meaning that he's just healed up your dragon! Quirky effect, but Thomas seems to think it's alright.

Delf Loedhi (Gnome Mystic) On your Hero Phase, you may pay 1 Movement and any # of Glory up to 3; target opponent must show you that # of cards from his hand (his choice). Pay the Glory value of one of those cards and you may put it in your hand. Limit once per turn.
Another new mechanic, unique to this deck, and also questionable. Some find it just too Glory consuming; your opponent is always going to show you his Hand's worst cards first, meaning that you'll have to fork out more Glory to get to his good stuff. And once you do, you fork out more Glory to bring 1 over to your side. And then fork out yet more Glory to play it. But one may argue that without those restrictions, this ability simply becomes too powerful; the fact that you can see your opponent's Hand, and remove one of his cards, means that you can effectively throw the spanner into the works of his carefully laid plans.

Faerona (Elf Priestess of Nakari) Pay 1 Glory; all Encounter in your space have -1 Magic this turn. Limit once per turn.
A nice all-round ability that comes in handy in any situation.

Mal Fisent (Drakan Defiler) Collect 2 Peril to add the Desert trait to the space your hero is in. This effect lasts for the duration of this turn. Limit once per turn.
One of those "terrain-based" effects I was talking about earlier. Ironically, Mal's ability comes in handier in combined deck games rather than just this one; DotFD just has too many Desert spaces to make this useful here. But once Mal gets into another wilderness deck, or a dungeon, it really becomes useful because it'll make all those terrain-dependant boons/treasures kick-in. It'll be interesting in 2-vs-2 games; Mal teamed up with Groluk would make a cool combination.

QUESTS
Most of the Quests in DotFD are fairly standard, although there are two interesting ones; "Rescue the Assassin Princess" is an Escort Quest that actually gives +1 Melee against humanoids while you have the Princess (I find that I tend to hang on to the Princess while I go attempt some other Quests); and "Uncover the Jewel of Anrak" is Search 9+ quest that allows you to add Glory to increase your chances of finding the Jewel.

MAP CARDS
Orange seems to be the main theme colour, so there's loads of orangy artwork in the locations. DotFD introduces Sewer C (see DotWW on the Sewers mechanic), and not one, not two, but three Dungeon Portals that can be used to connect other dungeon decks. Thomas better start producing more Dungeon-themed decks so that we can connect up these guys.

One particularly nice location is the "Burning Basin: When you enter this space on your turn, pay 1 additional movement or take 1 wound." It's basically a speed-bump; something that should come in useful given the importance of Movement in Dungeoneer.

ADVENTURE CARDS
After a load of new mechanics in DotWW, it's a bit surprising to see just a couple of new mechanics introduced in DotFD:

Scrolls
Scrolls are Anytime cards that bring about effects that last till the start of your next turn. This makes it increasingly useful when playing with large groups - your effect lasts much longer.

Terrain-based monsters/treasures/boons/effects
There are many, many cards that react with the terrain that you're on. Throgs costs less on Desert terrain; some monsters fight better on Desert terrain; some Treasures/Boons work better on the Desert terrain; etc. Although it gives a deeper level of differentiation between cards, I find that it's a fiddly mechanic; I seem to be spending a bit too much brain-power keeping track of what effects will work for me now that I'm on a new terrain.

Permanent Enchantments that make monsters Pumpable
Pumpable monsters first appeared in VotF, and then in DotWW, and now we've got permanent enchantments that allow Dungeonlords to pump up their monsters at any time. I personally feel that they're a bit over-powered, perhaps more "bane-discarding" Glory cards should have been thrown into the mix to balance them out.

CONCLUSION
I haven't played DotFD a lot compared to the other Dungeoneer decks, mainly because my game group doesn't find it all that interesting. I personally find some of the mechanics a little too over-whelming, particularly the terrain-based modifier stuff. In the past, an attack score was based on die roll plus ability plus whatever Treasure/Boon modifiers. Now it's die roll plus ability plus Treasures/Boons plus Terrain-based effects plus whatever additional Peril/Glory you pump in. Combat calculations slow down quite a bit - we seem to be spending more time adding up modifiers than anything else.

But if you love dragons (and who doesn't?), this deck has plenty of them!

Thread: Review

This review does not cover the rules of the game. If you have not played before you can find the rules at the following site: http://www.atlas-games.com/dungeoneer/index.php

Overview
Each new Dungeoneer set released adds new variety and expands on its predecessors and this expansion is no exception. As with all Dungoneer expansions, Dragons can be played as stand alone or integrated seamlessly with the other expansions. This set also introduces the desert terrain. It doesn't mean much by itself, but watch out for those creatures that gain bonuses on desert spaces!

Characters
Once again 6 new characters appear in this set.

Sharna: Human Dragon Slater. Ability: +1 to all attacks on Dragons. Nice ability if you are playing the expansion as stand alone since most of the monsters are dragons. She’s not as good, but still decent, when mixed with other sets since there are quite a few dragons found in other sets.

Faerona: Elf Priestess of Nakari. Ability: Nakari’s Dark Prayer: Pay 1 glory to give all monsters in her space -1 magic. Decent, but not as good Onoku Kai in Realms of the Ice Witch.

Delf Loedhi: Gnome Mystic. Ability: Foresee. Allows you to use 1 movement and any # of Glory, up to 3, to look at that many cards in opponents hand. You may then pay the glory of one of those cards and take it into your hand. Nice ability to look at other people hands, but in our games we’ve rarely used it to take anything.

Groluk: Ogre Barbarian. Ability: Desert Knowledge. Draw and Keep 1 extra card if you end your turn on a desert space. Very nice ability, it’s always nice to have that extra card.

Redark Noman: Human Arcanist. Ability: Dragon Ward: Allows you to pay any # of glory up to the threat of 1 dragon to return it to opponents hand. Not that great. Most of the time players do not have enough glory to return a pricy card to opponent’s hand, and if they do the opponent will just discard it and draw something new.

Mal Fiscent: Drakan Defiler. Ability: Defile Land. Pay 2 threat to turn any space into desert until end of turn. There’s only a couple cards in the set that you would actually want to do this with, if using more sets then it’s pretty worthless since you are unlikely to draw them.

Monsters
As you probably already know, this expansion is made up mostly of Dragons, and boy are they tough. These creatures are some of the toughest creatures to date. Most do 2 damage on an attack and get other bonuses on desert spaces. The big creature of this set is the Necrodragon who is just nasty. He can add to his stats by paying any # of threat and discards items and spells on his magic attack. The other creatures are very fitting for this set, such as the Giant Ant Lion and the Rock Demon.

New Cards
A new type of card introduced in this set is the Scroll. Scrolls are Anytime equipment cards that stay in play until the next turn. They heal damage and give a stat boost. It’s a neat mechanic that’s very fitting for reading a magical scroll. Most other items in the set deal with killing dragons. There are new potions that give big bonuses when fighting dragons and weapons and spells that do the same.

Conclusion
This is my favorite set to date and it’s also the most difficult. I like the desert theme of the set and the dragons and other creatures are very fitting. Even with it’s difficulty I recommend this set to both anyone who likes Dungeoneer and those looking to try it out.

This variant works with any Dungeoneer set, with any number of players.

Instead of having a "Build" phase to lay down map cards, during their Hero phase the player may decide to travel any valid direction that currently has no map card. The top map card is then placed on that spot, and the Hero moves there for one movement point. If the top map card will not fit, continue picking map cards until one will fit, reshuffling afterwards.

As an additional option, the player may decide to look in a direction, but not travel there. It still uses a movement point, but the Hero stays in the same place.

We've found this to be a lot of fun, especially for two players.

Thread: Dragons of the Forsaken Desert Game

Played this Dungeoneer expansion/adventure last night for the second time. We had 4 players. The game took about 1.5 hours. Lots of Dragons, Demons, vermin are used to hurt players. The map evolved very similarly as last time- lots of passages and trails and then many rooms towards the end of the map deck. Kinda boring lay out, my quest rooms were in the 4 corners of the map!! Anyhow, I didn't do that well. I couldn't bring my monsters to bear on the guys that were getting more powerful. Also, my treasure and boon cards were great against dragons using POWER attacks but that never happened. SPEED is a huge factor in this game and can win it for people, IMO. You do gather more peril as you move into more rooms BUT with high movement you can overcome a lot of the challenges, traps, locks, etc. I've played this game 4 times, this expansion seems to be my least favorite. Anyhow, I died horribly in a Sand Lion pit.

Andy

Thread: Request for more pictures of Dragons of the Forsaken Desert

I'm interested in Dungeoneer: Dragons of the Forsaken Desert, but I don't have that good an impression of the artwork in this set. I would therefore like that ask users who own this game to upload some images. Just a small selection of the cards would be fine. I'm interested in practically all the cards in this set, so feel free to upload your favorites.

Unfortunately I've only got a single GG. I'll gladly tip it away though to a good image and tip again when I've earned some more. I would just like to make it clear that I'm not offering GG to all submissions (I can't afford that). This is more of a friendly request to users that own this game and wouldn't mind to upload some images.

Kim

Thread: Re: Question about Portals

Notice the cut-out tokens also have "marker tokens" W:W, X:X, etc.

When a Map with a portal is drawn and placed that player can place a marker token on the portal, and the corresponding token on a Dungeon Entrance of his choice. They are now linked. Treat this as an Open exit.

Hope this helps,
td

Thread: Question about Portals

Some of the wilderness map cards are portals, linking to dungeons. Does a given portal link to all dungeons (i.e. can you choose which one to enter) and can a dungeon entrance link to any portal? If not, how do you decide which links to which?

Thread: Re: What's new here?

I just picked up my set today, and I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but one good thing is the addition of three more portal cards that allow you to enter dungeons from the wilderness sets. I picked up Den and Woods, and thought that more (I think there's one in each) would be better. I was a little suprised to discover that a large number of the cards in the two decks are duplicates from one to the other - I don't think this was the case in either Tomb or Vault (although I'm happy to be told I'm wrong).

Anyway, the art is good, I'm still kinda liking the mechanics and I'll probably post a review once I get a chance to play...

Thread: Re: What's new here?

Hello Damon,

Each new set introduces some new mechanic. The Wilderness sets introduced a huge new mechanic (terrains) that we are still exploring.

In Desert the most notable new mechanic are scrolls which are like potions (play anytime for an instant benefit), but last longer. So the more players there are the more useful scrolls are. However there are a lot of unique cards in Desert such as the Spear of Dragonslaying which can be used to automatically wound a dragon, or Dragon Cleaver which heals your hero each time he wounds a dragon.

It is not accurate to say that the Wilderness sets are about cards that only work on certain terrains, instead the cards have additional effects on certains terrains. For example Elven Cloak lets you discard 1 peril per turn, 2 perils if you are on a forest space.

(There is a rare exception: Forest Quake which attacks players only on forest)

Hope this helps.
td

Thread: What's new here?

I enjoy Dungeoneer quite a bit. I thought that Vault was a great expansion with the addition of the pumpable monsters, as this added a welcome element of balance and ferocity to the game. So I am tempted by this Dragons set, but mostly because I like the theme and the art is great as usual. However, from the sample cards I've seen, it doesn't look like there's anything really new here - just the same basic monster and quest types with. Is this perception correct, or are there any notable innovations in this set? I'd actually like to be convinced to buy this.

I passed on the Woods and Den sets as it appeared to me that the major new thing was that some cards only worked on certain terrain types, and I thought that just might make it more fiddly and frustrating to play cards. If these sets offer something new more than this, I'd also love to hear about it!

- Damon
