I agree, especially when you are eliminating players. We, however, were just playing to play, so I think stealing all the spoons when I had four-of-a-kind was a fun diversion to many a spoon-grabbing.

Perhaps the designer could make an Official Variant.

I'm pretty sure that you can not. It is, after all, much like a card game version of musical chairs. We usually play that you can use the spoon to rap the knuckles of those grabbing for the spoons remaining on the table.
