Thread: Quick Comments

Showbiz is a strange beast. The board is busy, there are numerous counters to be played with, as well as cards. Each player must hire performers from a random choice available based on what the public currently demands. For each match between performer and public demand a players score increases. However you must also choose length of contract for your performers with only minimal view of the future. You can see a prediction of what next years performers will be, as well as the chance that the prediction will come to pass. In addition, some of the performer types are rarer than others.

The choice of performer goes round the table until all your performer slots are filled. However, your choice can be challenged by a rather clumsy auction system.

Showbiz is a fun enough game, but there are a whole lot of fussy game mechanics for not a lot of game. Games such as Ra and Medici show how clean and clear the mechanics of a game can be. Showbiz falls way short fo this mark, seeming caught in the trap of trying to be several different games or trying to use several different mechanics and not doing any particularly well. Nevertheless, its not a bad game, and will come out of the cupboard every so often to make a guest appearance at your gaming table.
