Thread: WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU"RE DOING?

In our house, cooperative play is considered an abomination. It's every man, women and child to themselves. We have a couple of kids coop games, but that's just to appease my hippie sisters.

The other day we were looking after the neighbours kids, so we pulled out this great little game. We knew they could play it as we had given it to them as a birthday gift.

So as we play, the girls started sending the wizard to each other when they turned into frogs. OK, I know their parents are hippy sympathisers so I let that pass. But as the game moved on, they convinced my boy to do the same thing!

The shame I felt. And I was glad for them all that my wife was not in earshot of this situation as she would have given them all timeouts.

After moving the wizard to one of the girl's frog pieces for the first time he looks at me and cops the evil eye. But as he turns away, remorseful, knowing he has betrayed his family name, one of the girls plants a huge kiss, on his lips no less, looks deep in his eyes and says thanks!!

Now how the hell is my evil eye going to beat a kiss on the lips?

So for the rest of the game I was resigned to the fact that he would continue to employ this heart-wrenching tactic to win more kisses.

I was sullen, my pain was deep and for me to deal quicker with this behaviour and move on, I announced that you only need two crystals to win, knowing I was in the lead. Unfortunately the girls moved the wizard to heal my son and he romps home for the win.

Any chance for me to highlight the consequences of his actions drifted off on those kisses and that cooperative tactic. He plays coooperatively :shudder:, get's kisses everytime he helps the girls and he wins.

I kicked the girls out making them find their own way home, put my son to bed early and then whipped his butt at Heroscape the next day.

That'll teach em, that will teach them all.

Another game you might consider is Gulo Gulo, a dexterity game with larger decisions to make. It favors smaller fingers, so your daughter would get the biggest handicap, then your son. It's fun for adults too, although sausage fingers cause problems.

But do you think her 8 1/2 year old brother would be willing to play (and enjoy playing)?

My older daughter is 7 and I own and have played all the games you mention here so I'll give you some feedback.

Mago might be a bit young for an 8-9 year old although the 6 year old would love it I'm sure.

Big brother loves games, and likes playing Sleeping Queens and Duck Duck Bruce with his sister. So I'm hopeful. But I still thought I'd post this question and ask if Mago Magion is too obviously pegged for the kindergartner set. What do you think?

If he likes Sleeping Queens then maybe there is some hope. Sleeping Queens is a great game but a bit simple. Mago has some similarities.

Also, I'm tempted to get Viva Topo! instead of Mago Magino, based on reviews. Problem is, we own (and enjoy!) Midnight Party and commentators often draw comparisons between Midnight Party and Viva Topo as similar games, which makes me wary of acquiring Viva Topo. For those of you familiar with both Midnight Party and Viva Topo, how legitimate is this worry? Would it make sense to own both Midnight Party and Viva Topo?

I own both. My younger daughter is about 5 yrs old. She can handle Midnight party without too much trouble. Viva Topo she has trouble with. In Midnight Party you are trying to just not get caught for the most part. In Viva Topo you are trying to get the most points. Judging when to take the points or when to continue is something the 5 yr old has some trouble with. Viva Topo is a better game but it's not as much fun to play on Halloween!

And one more question: Is it true that Mago Magino is quite a different game than Midnight Party, so that the "too similar" worry does not really apply to Mago Magino?

Mago is very different from Midnight Party.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but these are expensive games and I want to be sure to get the right one. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

A couple other games that my daughter loves are Ubongo and Chateau Roquefort . Your six year old might be able to handle them by now but they would maybe fit the 8-9 yr old better.

For more ideas you can do a GeekList search for titles that contain the words 'school' or 'elementary' or 'year old'. Those should pull up quite a few lists of games suited for younger kids.

Hope that helps

It's not great fun for two adults and I could also see how it could be a little frustrating for the younger ones as the desert moves.

I've had good luck with Transamerica, That's Life, and even For Sale and Niagara with my friends' kids who are in the 6-10 age range. They require very little to no reading, are simple to explain, are quick, and generally, they have little downtime. Good luck!

Thanks Jeff and Bunny International(!) for the quick feedback -- very helpful. Jeff you must be a mindreader because Pick Picknic was #2 on the list, after Mago Magino. Now it looks like #1.

Bunny International -- I see from your collection you own Marrakesh. Have you played it yet?
I am unfamiliar with Mago Magino, but if your family is already playing and enjoying Midnight Party, I would skip Viva Topo. I have both and my four year old loves Viva Topo but isn't quite ready for Midnight Party... too many decisions. And since my oldest is four, I have helpful suggestions about appropriate games other than doing a geeklist search childrens games.

Hi Craig, welcome to BGG!

cdunc123 wrote:
I'm thinking of getting this game for my daughter's sixth birthday. At heart it is similar to Midnight Party as well, essentially being roll and move, with a particular roll activating the witch (a similar action to rolling Hugo), having to manage multiple pieces, moving them to safety.

Viva Topo is indeed similar to Midnight Party, in that you're moving around a track, trying to avoid being caught by cats. Personally, I think the theme makes it feel different, but if you think about it all three games are pretty similar. I looked at your games owned and if you want to try something different, I could recommend titles like Pick Picknic or even some light dexterity games.
