As does "Legends of the Old West" but I haven't got much experience with miniature games. Maybe my safest bet would be Gunslinger.

Gunslinger is a little complex but very detailed. "Gutshot" is VERY easy to learn, as much so as TRWNN or "Cowboys". It just has that little extra layer of flavor that makes it a bit more satisfying.

Wolfshade wrote:
I was looking for something fast-paced. A cowboy themed "Last Night on Earth"/"Frag" with or without the "When Darkness Comes" dice System.

You might not want to give up on "Cowboys" yet then. It's right in that "Frag" neighborhood.

Wolfshade wrote:
Well, if you would feel like doing a bunch of skills/abilities,
please do ;). Possible gun jams would be cool as well ;p.

Might have to consider it. As I said, would be fairly easy. Pretty much just port in some stuff from games like TRWNN. Another thing to consider is the upcoming expansion for "Cowboys" too. I'm kind of curious to see what new stuff they add.
---MS

Maybe my safest bet would be Gunslinger.

With some luck I'll be able to snatch a copy of ebay for a reasonable price. (I guess there aren't any publishers with concrete plans to redo that one? *cross fingers* Maybe we should poke GMT or MMP for something like that?)

Anyway, #9 is indeed Ambush at Mescal Springs.
Cover would indeed be nice. I'll try out the scenario's you've mentioned :). I indeed skipped the one-board scenario's.
I was looking for something fast-paced. A cowboy themed "Last Night on Earth"/"Frag" with or without the "When Darkness Comes" dice System.

Well, if you would feel like doing a bunch of skills/abilities,
please do ;).
Thread: Re: Before I trade

I thought about doing a bunch of skills/player abilities. It would actually be really easy & would help to give the game a little more flavor by making individual cowboys a little more distinct from each other. But there are other games such as "The Rules With No Name", & "Gutshot" (& I THINK "Desperado"?)that already feature them. I kinda felt like if I keep adding custom rules onto "Cowboys" I might as well be playing one of the OTHER games. Still, if anyone thinks it's worthwhile, I might pursue it.

As for scenarios, don't have my book with me. Is #9 Ambush at Mescal Flats? That one's not too bad IMO, although I would have preferred a board w/ some cover (that's my one lament about the outdoor boards/scenarios)

The scenarios I like best are the big ones w/ lots of units on each side & multiple boards Like the Northfield Minnesota Raid, The Last Ride of the Dalton Gang, The Wild Bunch etc. Buckshot vs the Regulators, Butch & Sundance, Commodore Owens vs the Blevins Boys & the OK Corral (with the advanced rules) I liked too. Lynch Mob & Jail break can be fun. High Noon & Open Range are good too. some of the beginning simple shootouts are probably TOO simple for your tastes.

Having said that, "Cowboys" (& most western skirmish games in general) do have fair to large amounts of luck in them. There are some decisions to make about who moves where when, etc., but by nature they're supposed to be somewhat unpredictable & chaotic as opposed to other types of squad level minis games which tend to be more tactical from my understanding.

SO...even with all of the above, depending on your tastes, you still may not like it unfortunately. For a more tactical, less luck driven western game "Gunslinger" would be the way to go.
---MS

Thread: Before I trade

I tried this game together with my regular group.
We were with 4 in total and tried the 9th scenario.
Now I don't mind a bit of luck in a game, but in the third turn
it was 3 cowboys vs 1 (the others decided that running away was more fun). I can't say I was very impressed.

Still I would like to give this a second chance before I trade this game.

What scenario's are cool?
What extra rules are fun too add? (Yes, we tried the "advanced" rules)
Has anyone made abilities you can roll for?
And/or Cowboy specific stats?

Has anyone tried to combine this with "Bang!"?
As in secret role's (except the Sheriff).
That might be fun as well.

Anyway, I would love to love this game.
So please help me :)
I like. I would also add that if his NEXT action comes up, then he looses his "held" one. If this is his LAST action he's holding & the cup empties, then he looses it also.
---MS
