Thread: Fun Kids Matching/Slapping Game

We picked this game up yesterday to work on some geography with the kids. They wanted to play it repeatedly.

Gameplay

15 cards are laid out on the table. Each card shows a state, its name, region (denoted with a colored border), relative landmass (shown with a pie piece varying from 1/4 to 1 whole), and relative population (denoted by having from 1 to 5 people pictured at the bottom of the card). The rest of the cards are put in a stack in the center.

The top card of the stack is flipped over, then the die is rolled. The die determines the next action, depending on the die roll, the players try to be the first to slap the card that matches the region, the state "color" (the color in which it happens to be drawn), the population, the landmass, or two of the above items. There is also an option that has the player slap the center card and say the state name. If there is no match the players try to be the first to say "no match." The fastest player keeps the slapped card, the top card is moved to the table, and play repeats.

The first player to 10 cards wins.

Educational Value

This is an educational game, and it has some inherent geography value. Through repeated playing, children will pick up on the general location of states, size, and population. But the game does not get any deeper than that.

I wish this game came with a map. We pulled one out and played that when we got a card, we had to find the state on the map. (As the map was not labeled, my weak geography skills were transparent.)

Overall Impression

My six-year-old really liked this game, so that gives it some value. In substance, this is a standard card slapping game where some learning will take place over time.

All in all, if you have kids, this game is worth the $4 I found it for, but don't expect it to be a classic for years to come.
