I found a set of "old west" figures like pioneers or settlers, at a Hobby Lobby store. It was back with models and toys. I just had to adapt the fishing poles and rifles into shovels and picks.

Another idea would be to check all the new Indiana Jones games out now. Maybe one of those include some type of suitable pose?

The important thing is the scale, so they fall down when a fireball hits them.

Good Luck

Thread: I pimped my game...

Somehow I missed this game when it originally came out(actually I think I was in high school by then). Being an Ameritrasher at heart, I was very interested especially with all the good nostalgic reviews so I had been keeping my eye out for a "deal" on this game.
Yeah Right- as everyone reading this probably knows, a "deal" on this game is usually anything under $100...
So after many thrift store trips and auction watching I had pretty much given up hope.
Then I saw the thread about the guy that hand sculpted the entire board and all the pieces, and I was inspired... except that I had never even seen the actual board in person and didn't know where to even begin.

Then finally, a lead. An auction that was only the box and the board and the cards....and I won it for $10 plus $9 shipping. YES!

I was excited. I figured the marbles and dice would be no problem. I could find some minis for the little guys, and some kind of gem. Maybe fab up the bridges and "tokens" somehow. But that big Tiki Head....no idea.
So it showed up and I finally got a first hand look at my grail and while in great shape, was pretty underwhelmed by the board graphics. I know it was the eighties but still I guess I had built it up in my mind after all this time. However after raiding the kids marble jar and rolling some "fireballs" I had to admit it was pretty fun.

The first stop was "Hobby Lobby" and I got a little bag of craft wood for the bridges. I found a cool little gem, and I got some wood "tokens". Then Jackpot, a bag of "Old West" minis that were the right scale! As far as the Tiki Head, I was thinking of some kind of styrofoam that could carve and coat with something and paint...but that part seemed pretty overwhelming especially since its a key component to the game.
I got to work and the kids were very intrigued with everything. As I was working, my wife even commented about it. I explained my problem with the "Head", and she suggested Sculpy. I thought yeah right. Have you seen my "pottery"? Theres a reason. Anyway, she, being the very crafty type, offered to give it a try. As you can see below the result was AMAZING!

I was inspired! I sacrificed part of a second set of Heroscape Jungle terrrain in a few places to "spruce up" the board. I picked out some good "guys" from the old west to be the "explorers", replacing the hunting rifles and fishing poles for picks and shovels. Then my girls stated that at least two of the "guys" needed to be females. Ohh Kay... So I tried to sand the beards off two of them and glued on some pig tails and a pony tail respectively, literally from two pigs and a pony that were in the set.

Here's where I started to get a little crazy. That little boat that you're supposed to get to with the jewel was just pathetic. So I made a boat that you can really get in with your jewel and ride away into the sunset with.

I didn't like the "ruins" where you pick up the tokens. It didn't look like ruins to me. So I got some left over Hirst Arts castings and made proper ruins...

I made a liitle camp on the start space....I don't know why.

The little beach wreck graphics on the other side of the board didn't look good with all this other stuff now so I took a couple leftover zombies...

Then that other corner looked boring so I made a little scene just to spruce things up some...

Having done enough damage, I stopped there so we could actually play it! It was a hit, and a lot of fun to put together. The only problem now is it doesn't fit in the box anymore.

The moral of the story here is, Don't give up hope finding your grail. Even if it's not in the condition you were hoping for...

Thread: A few new card ideas

I doubt I'll ever use these when I play, since I mostly play with my family and I don't see them wanting to alter the game in any way, but I figured I'd toss them on the Geek for general consumption.

Copy Any Card Just Played
You resolve the copied effect after the original card. You may copy a Cancel Any Card to cancel that card.

Bride Crossing
Play when you reach an unoccupied bridge. You may cross that bridge if you rolled high enough to do so.

Dodge Fireball
Remove your figure from the board before a fireball is rolled; replace it afterward.

Opponent Loses a Turn
Pretty self-explanatory. You might want to lay their figure down on the board so they remember if you play it before their turn.

Move to Any Cave Instead of Rolling the Die
You may play this on yourself or any opponent in a cave.

That's it for now. Enjoy!

Galen
Thread: Re: How you should play Fireball Island

Speaking in the mode of "Ask a Ninja", I would say the only way the game is fun to play is if you actually set the ball on fire and play on a small island completely surrounded by man-eating sharks. The island should only have room for one less then the number of player who set out to play "Fireball Island". In this, the player who lost the game the worst gets thrown off the island, unless they happen to battle the winner to the death, in which case the winner gets thrown off. If in any case the ball stops being on fire, all players are thrown off the island for being negligent and allowing that to happen.

The latest word is this will be an episode on the next season of Survivor, "Survivor: Fireball Island".

Thread: How you should play Fireball Island

I don't write game reviews, I read them. That said here it goes for one I feel hasn't been done it's proper justice yet.

First, take a good look at some of the photo's of this board before you read the review, a rough familiarity with the look of the board should make this review slightly clearer.

I've played maybe 200 games of Fireball island and I have a special version that I like to play. But how is it played properly?

Simple.

First, you get one character each. Thery're all the same so no worries just choose a colour and get going. Next you roll and move. The object of the game is to get to the Idol at the top of the Island, take the jewel, and get it to the boat so you can escape with your bounty a la Indiana Jones. Sounds simple and indeed, it is. However some of the spaces you land on are slightly darker then others, these ones allow you to take a card which could say:

1/ Fireball - this allows you to roll one fireball on the board.

2/ Magic Talisman - this protects you from one fireball on the board.

3/ Cancel - this allows you to cancel any card except the fireball card.

4/ Double Your Die Roll - it let's you double your roll (great if you roll a 4 or higher but pretty stupid if you roll a one).

5/ Re-roll - force an opponent to re-roll his die.

6/ Free turn - as it says, it gives you a free turn.

7/ Subtract 1-3 from opponents die roll - as it says.

8/ Move Ahead 1-3 spaces - obvious.

9/ Fake Jewel - when someone steals the jewel from you you can instead give them the fake jewel.

You can only have four cards at any one time.

Now if you roll a one, you get to move and then roll a fireball, as a matter of fact you HAVE to roll a fireball and hit someone (if possible), and yes that does include yourself. If your hit you move to the firepit (there is a different one for each section of the board) and you stay there until your next turn. Then you get to stand up, and the following turn you can roll and move again. The fireballs are small marbles that follow pre-determined paths but can be slightly unpredictable, to roll one just push it off it's perch.

To steal the jewel from someone just walk past them (or step on their square and then backwards to force them to come back) and assuming they don't hit you with a fake jewel card... it's yours.

As you play you can collect a small token after the first hill, this allows you to, at any time (only once), fill your hand of cards up to four. Save it for the endgame.

There are also caves that you can enter. Once there you can roll a die and whatever number you roll is what cave you go to (there are, of course, six numbered caves). This can allow you to traverse large sections of the board very quickly if you need to catch up, however a subtract one from your die roll really screws this plan if your hoping to get to cave five (the closest cave to your escape boat).

That's the basics. The game is pretty much all dice/card dependent and can be very frustrating if there is a runaway leader and your left behind, which is why I reccomend you only play it two players, with two characters each. It is a much better game this way.

What we do is keep the card hands seperate (each of your characters has a seperate hand) but still use them to help both characters. Some things we do that other players don't...

1/ Move ahead is a relative term so we use this card to move ANY (even your opponent) player in any direction that number of squares (this means you can move your opponent onto a bridge... which if you've played before you know no one in their right mind ever stays on, or you can move your opponent into a fire-ball zone).

2/ Subtract can be used on your own character (in order to keep him in a no-fireball zone or to give him a card), just not the one who owns it.

3/ People can count spaces however they want (did you roll a two, well just stay where you are and get another card).

We also play where you can try each fireball once but once you choose your final fireball to roll, that's it you get one shot. It must follow it's proper path and anyone hit by the fireball or the character it's pushing along is considered hit. You can position your character anyway you like previous to the fireball being rolled.

Now this does not make it Yinsh or Powergrid, it's still alot of luck. But we've found that this mitigates the luck reasonably well... I'll beat a new player almost anytime if we play this way... it's slightly more strategic. It also makes for a killer endgame, very tight and exciting.

I find that this game is great for kids (of course) and old AT fans. It is very thematic, has an awesome board, the cards look great and so does the idol. It plays very fast and can be great fun over a couple of beers when you and one other buddy (I insist, two players) are sick of Mr. Jack.

I give the traditional game 6 stars and the version we play 8. It truly is great fun with just these few small tweaks.
A friend and I put about 30 hours into redesigning a massive new board with a bunch of new features. It was about 4'x6' and pretty awesome. We had most of the construction done and were getting set to work on the finer detail work and aesthetic sculpting.

But alas, he moved away and the project fell by the wayside until one fateful day it was smashed pretty good by accident and thus was relegated to the trash.

I am totally stoked on your board.

Hey Rodney,

Seems there wasn't a whole lot of interest in your project, but I have to say, I think its one of the coolest things I've seen here. I use to have the game, and loved it, but no way I'm paying $150 + to buy it again, because afterall, it was cheap vacuformed plastic.

I am however considering doing my own 3D board, similar to yours as like you, I do have the ability and its really just a matter of time.

Congrats on the great build.
that's a shame.. those marbles do look awsome.

I no longer own the game, but I clearly remember them being glass.
Yeah it is! I guess I could have done the same sort of post... but I'm not really into the way these boards are designed to operate.
Since making the island I've been interested in making more three-dimensional game boards. I think they're pretty special and I've got a good bit of skills under my belt from this last one. There are a couple games out there already that could benefit from a three-dimensional board, whether it had one to begin with or not, but I'm thinking of designing my own.

Should the dig roll result in a duplicate item, they
may continue to re-roll until they receive a different item/event.

B. Different players can possess the same item.

C. All Items are single use only.

D. Players may use any number of items per turn.

E. Items are not dropped when a player is hit with a fireball or affected
by another item.

F. Cancel cards do not affect items.

G. If a player has both the Fireflash Boots and Fireflash Shield in their
inventory, they may discard both at any time to roll an ULTIMATE FIREBALL.
This fireball can't be stopped by any card or item. After rolling the
ultimate fireball, you may then draw any single (non duplicate) item of
your choice for free.

II - [ ACQUIRING ITEMS ]
You have a chance to acquire an item by landing on dark board spaces.
If you have less than three items, roll the die, otherwise just draw
a card as usual if you have less than four. If you roll a 1
(Item Set 1) or a 3 (Item Set 2), you may roll again (dig roll)
to determine which item you receive, otherwise you draw a card if you
have less than four.

HOUSE RULE: If you wish to have a greater chance at acquiring items, you
may specify that a roll of 6 for an item/card means that you may reroll the
die. This means that your chance to acquire an item or a card are equal.

III - [ DIGGING FOR ITEMS ]
Players use a shovel to discover items. Your first roll to acquire an item
determines which set you choose from, the result of your dig roll determines
what item you receive from the chosen set.

IV - [ ITEM SET ONE ]
IF YOUR ACQUIRE ROLL WAS A 1, YOUR DIG ROLL RESULT YIELDS THIS ITEM SET

1. * Fireflash Boots * - Strap on these magic boots to dash across bridges
in a flash as quick as fire! Use after a die roll in which you would normally
end your turn on a bridge. Move one space ahead of the bridge instead
of stopping. Alternatively, if the roll does not end your player on a
bridge, you can also use the boots to move ahead up to three spaces.

Item can only be used during your turn.

2. * Torch * - The torch will help to light the way in the dark
labyrinth like caves of the island. Only use this item when in a cave
and before rolling for a cave number. Roll two dice instead of one
and pick one result - move to that cave. In the event you roll doubles,
your torch burns out, leaving you with a single result to choose from.
Alternately, the torch can be discarded at any time to draw a card if
you have less than four.

Item can only be used during your turn.

3 * Revolver * - Player digs to discover a revolver with a single round
in the chamber! Any player not in a cave that is within twelve spaces of
your current position is considered in range of the revolver (start counting
on the space to the left or right of your playing piece). Choose a target
player from those in range. That player rolls the die for a chance to dodge
the bullet. If they roll a 1, the bullet misses them, otherwise, put the
playing piece on its side as if it were in a smolder pit. Standard smolder
pit rules then apply - they must stand up and skip their next turn. Players
shot while on a bridge move to the water penalty area and the jewel remains
on the bridge. If a player is fireballed while laying down on the trail with
the jewel, the jewel does not follow them to the corresponding smolder pit,
it remains on trail space where they were shot.

Item can be used at any time.

4. * Landslide * - Player sets off a deadly landslide comprised of falling
boulders and receives no item. All players not in a cave must roll the
die, beginning with the player who triggered the landslide. If the player rolls
a 1, they avoid the landslide, otherwise they move back three spaces.
Players hit by a landslide while holding the jewel must drop it
on the current space before moving back.

5 * Tome of the Viper * - You dig to uncover an ancient spellbook that holds
the secrets of the island. When playing this item, you may choose one of two
possible effects. Firstly, the tome can be used in response to an opponent
playing an item to cancel it. Alternately, you may use the tome to take an item
of your choice from any player, as long as you have less than three items and
it is not a duplicate of an item you currently possess. The target player must
roll the die. If they roll a 1, the item does not change hands, otherwise
you are successful in taking the item.

Item can be used at any time.

6 * Staff of Vul-Kar * - Summon the power of the gods to have Vul-Kar do
your bidding! May be used to roll a fireball or stop a fireball.
You may also choose to redirect the fireball of an opponent. When redirecting,
you must launch your opponent's fireball from Vul-Kar, facing any of the
five directions. Player's who possess both the jewel and the ruin token
may not have their fireballs redirected.

Item can be used at any time.

VI - [ ITEM SET 2 ]
IF YOUR ACQUIRE ROLL WAS A 3, YOUR DIG ROLL RESULT YIELDS THIS ITEM SET

1 * Witchlord Crystal * - Use this ancient quartz crystal to see into the future.
When playing this item, roll the die. If you roll above a 3, subtract three from
that number for your result (X). Choose a target player, he must shuffle his
hand and you may pick up to (X) cards from his hand to be revealed to you. You may
then take any one of the revealed cards from your opponent.

Item can be used at any time.

2 * Voodoo Doll * Your digging uncovers a cursed voodoo doll that looks
suspiciously like one of your opponents! Players who possess the voodoo doll
item may play it to leave the voodoo doll behind on their current space. Mark
the trail space in some way so others can see where the voodoo doll is. Any
player whose movement roll would have them pass over the cursed space must
end their turn on that space as if it were a bridge. They are then forced
to discard a card of their choice. If they have no cards, they must discard an
item of their choice, if they have no items or cards, the curse does not
affect them. The voodoo doll is only removed from the board space once it causes
a player to discard a card or item. The voodoo doll does not affect the player
who played it.

Item can only be used during your turn.

3 * Waking the Dead * - Your digging has disturbed the resting place of an
explorer who perished before you in an attempt to recover the jewel! You
receive no item. Each player rolls the die. The player with the lowest result
becomes haunted by the ghost. If two players both roll the lowest result,
they must continue to roll until a victim is determined. Haunted players do
not roll for cards/items when landing on dark spaces. Instead when they reach
a dark space, they must roll the die in an attempt to exorcise the spirit.
If they roll a 1 or a 3, the ghost remains attached, otherwise the spirit leaves
you, vanishing in the light of dawn. You do not get to roll again that turn for
a card/item, even if you escaped the ghost. Players can only be haunted by one
ghost at a time, but more than one ghost can be in play at once if they are
haunting different players. Players who are already haunted do not take part
in the roll to determine who gets the ghost.

4. * Leather Whip * - Use the whip to fight off all opposing explorers
in your path! Do battle with each player not in a cave that is within
six spaces of your current position (start counting on the space to the
left or right of your playing piece). Each player in range must roll the die.
If they roll a 1, they avoid your whip attack, otherwise, put the playing piece
on its side as if it were in a smolder pit. Standard smolder pit rules then
apply, they must stand up and skip their next turn. Players whipped while on
a bridge move back to the first unoccupied space before laying down and the
jewel remains on the bridge. If a player is fireballed while laying down on
the trail with the jewel, the jewel does not follow them to the corresponding
smolder pit, it remains on trail space where they were hit with the whip.

Item can be used at any time.

5 * Boat Anchor * - Your digging uncovers an anchor that can be used to slow
down anyone who tries to escape with the jewel. You may play this item at any
time to attach the anchor to the boat. Any player that has the jewel must now
roll the exact count needed to land on the dock to win the game while the
anchor is attached. In the event they do not roll the exact count needed, and
the movement roll is not enough to place them on the dock, they do not move
their playing piece. If the roll was not exact, but was enough to land them on
the dock, they must re-roll the die for a chance to cut free the anchor. If
they roll a 1, they successfully cut loose the anchor and WIN THE GAME,
otherwise the anchor stays attached and they must move back one space. Only
one boat anchor can be attached at any time.

Item can only be used during your turn.

6 * Fireflash Shield * - You dig to discover a shield that could only have
been crafted by the hands of a God. In the event that your player has been
fireballed, hit with the leather whip, or shot with the revolver, use this
item in response for a chance to cancel the effects. Roll the die, if you
roll a 1, the shield fails to save you, otherwise your shield deflects the
fireball/whip/bullet - you do not move to a smolder pit, lay down on the trail,
or drop the jewel. Stand your playing piece back up on the space you were
originally standing on before being attacked.

Item can be used at any time.
[/c]

Thread: Re: Fireball marbles not heavy enough?

I swear mine are original, so I don't know how to explain that. Maybe Milton Bradley cheaped out on part of the production run?

I think if these cool looking marbles are close enough in size, I'm going to order a 25 pack for $2.13.

Update: Those are 16mm marbles and the ones that came with my game are 12mm. It looks like some of the paths on the mold may not accept 16mm.

I also have an original set from my childhood and the marnles are glass, we lost one some years ago and replaced with a dollar store marble we bought and it works just like the originals. Metal ones are great for variety (we sub in the metal ball bearings every 10th game or so), they roll alot further and make for a cool game.

- J

Thread: Re: Remove a fireball when it stops

For us, when the fireball pushes a character if the character pushed by the fireball touches another character... they're both hit. If the character further along the path doesn't get hit (by a fireball or another character)... he's safe. This is a big part of the strategy (we usually play two players each... it's a better two player game with two characters each for strategy purposes, still not much strategy but more then with one each and four players). We do allow people to roll harder, but if it goes off the path then a re-roll is required, also we allow people to position they're character on his square very carefully before a rolled fireball, on the off chance it stops just on their square... this adds some drama.

- J
