Missing last year as GM, while unavoidable, could easily be the cause. Also with the game not available in most stores, and the eBay prices so high, it is hard to generate newbies.

The only thing in tournament AdCiv that is an advantage is that it might be the only possibility for many to play an 8-player game.

Thread: 2008 Origins Adv Civ Tourney

After several years of having 5, 6, or 7 games go off in the Origins Civ tourney, we had only 3 this year. I'm not sure what caused the rather dramatic drop.

There were four preliminary sessions scheduled:
Thu 9am (11 players)
Thu 6pm (4 players- canceled)
Fri 9am (4 players- canceled)
Fri 6pm (6 players)

For the two sessions which had only 4 players I gave them the option of playing or getting a refund, and they all preferred to go do something else rather than play a 4-player game.

Results
1) Babylon 4811
2) Thrace 4729
3) Assyria 4690
4) Egypt 3621
5) Crete 2688

1) Thrace 3816
2) Assyria 3730
3) Egypt 3620
4) Italy 3486
5) Africa 3242
6) Babylon 3004

1) Assyria 4763
2) Egypt 4591
3) Iberia 4590
4) Thrace 4478
5) Babylon 4320
6) Crete 4100

Unfortunately the finals also had to be canceled due to lack of players.

With Origins going to a full 5-day con, we had two 'introductory' games on weds, which were very well attended- 8 players each.. Next year we will look at modifying the tourney schedule a bit to try to get better event attendance.

Possibly add the Weds introductory events into the tourney structure.

Thanks to all who participated!

Bill
Thread: Re: Legal status

DaveD wrote:
As I recall Francis Tresham sold his Hartland Trefoil company to Microprose, including his Civilisation rights. Microprose was later bought by Hasbro, so they would have held all the Board and computer game rights.

Yes, exactly!

DaveD wrote:
I don't know what happened to the board game rights when Hasbro Interactive was sold off, but if it is true that Hasbro still hold the Advance Civ rights, I assume they must still own the base Civ rights because without those Advanced Civilisation would seem pretty useless.

Its not a question of the rights to the game but the rights to the name and artwork. I bet Hasbro sold those rights to Fraxis. You could change the name and the artwork to republish the game, since mechanics aren't copyrighted. But it would be hard to get both the name from Take2 and the artwork from Hasbro.
