Thread: Deal Cards List?

I picked up a copy of the 1975 version at a thrift store this weekend.

Unfortunately, I only have 8 of the 16 deal cards. Could someone check their copy and post (or send me) a list of the deal cards so I know which cards to be looking for?

thanks,
mark

Thread: Re: A comparison between the old and the new

I purchased a new copy of the game on sale, remembering the old game.

They are vastly different, as the OP has stated. If you want the old game, find an old copy.

The new one isn't very good. They should really be different BGG entries, they are so different.

Further Examples:
Old Game: $325 income, bills as high as $500, $800
New Game: $3,250 income, bills as high as $500, $300

Old Game: %20 loan interest, %10 savings interest
New Game; %10 loan interest

Old Game: Land on a square and maybe win $50.
new Game: Roll to win $500 (biggest bill amount, remember)

The inflationary aspects of the income, with no tie in on cost stress means really has a negative impact on this game. No stress at all on being able to afford your bills / interest.

Hi, I've found three incomplete sets of this (Canadian?) version at thrift shops

and I was wondering if anyone knows the distribution of the Deal and Mail cards?

Also, of the three sets, two have pegs and a savings and loans chart, and the other has little sheathed charts that you slide until the amount you're interested in appears in the window. I'd really appreciate information about both editions.
I loved the old payday as well (it was quite a bit before my time, but I found an old copy in my Grandma's attic and always loved playing it when we would visit).

That's dissapointing that the new version doesn't retain what made this game fun.

Thread: A comparison between the old and the new

I loved this game as a kid. I remember it being loads of fun and flowed well. When my wife and I saw that they had released a new version we were all over it.

We cracked open the box and had a look around. The board has changed quite a bit. What happened to the free spaces on Sundays? Lottery, every week? well ... let’s keep an open mind. The prices of things changed, which I would expect, but the costs didn't seem to balance this out as it did in previous versions.

Nostalgia:
In the original game I remember players fighting for enough to buy deals even after the third month, taking loans at huge intrest just to get by. Money was usually tight and fear of the end of the month bills was high all game. The deals were funny and well balanced and the insurance was great! I can remember players going bankrupt and having to drop out of the game. It was fun, though I was just a kid.

Disappointment:
In the new version they have done away with many of the bills (especially the higher priced ones) and insurance. The deals on a whole are much less impressive and money flows like water. By the end of the second month you almost always have a huge surplus of money and loans are only used to buy your first deal if you are unlucky.

Thinking back I would say that the original was a much better portrait of life (in a bizarre and quirky way) than this new game. Not even my children (who I am proud to say are becoming avid gamers in their own right) do not like the game.
The most frustrating part of the whole game is the lottery. This can take large amounts of time as each player rolls and rolls until someone gets a 6. We eventually (in our first game none teh less) made a house rule that whoever landed on the lottery just took the hundred and we moved on. This actually helped game flow allot.

I haven't come across to many games I really do not like, but this game may just find itself in the trash one day soon. I DO NOT recommend this game to anyone for any reason.
Thread: User Review

I lived in Germany for one year when I was a kid and some other kid in the neighbourhood introduced me to Zahltag. My mom, sister and I played it over and over again for months. We simply loved the game, and after a while my mother bought it for us. It was in 1978. I still got it (the German version) somewhere at my parents' house.

The game is very simple. The board is layed out as a calender showing one month of 31 days. The players each have a colored token, a stack of money and take turns rolling the 6-sided die. The squares on the board represents one day each. When players end up in a square they do whatever is written on it, e.g. getting og paying a fixed amout of money, getting mail, or buying/selling special collector's items. At the end of the month the players get a fixed amount of money and pay any bills they received in the mail. They also pays interest of loans or gets interest from money they put in the bank. After a preset number of months the player with the most money is the winner.

I guess, the thing that got me coming back as a kid was the buying and selling of the collector's items, which is the only time when you make decission in the game. Whenever you end in a buy square you draw a card and decide if you want to buy or not. If you do you have the rest of the month to sell it for twice the cards initial worth. However, if you don't the card and money is lost. This is (or was) very exciting. Also, some of the mail cards are related to the collector's item. E.g. if you own the Chimpanzee you may get lucky and win an extra bonus and so on.

Another brilliant feature was the humourous, ironic and rather good cartoon-like drawings (in the German version) making the game somewhat cynical in theme. One might say while playing: "it's funny because it's true".

A few other details make this game fun. E.g. there is a "time goes backwards" square. Whenever a player ends on this all players must move one square back making the game a little more upredictable and crazy.

If you have kids in the 5-10 year range and they like board games, they'll probably love this one. At least I did, and so do some of the younger members of the family. Recommended!

Thread: User Review

I’ve been reviewing games I played and own (and still own, tattered and torn with taped box corners) as a kid. Pay Day is another one where I spent countless hours on. God knows why!

My 1980s edition comes with a board, paper money, 48 Mail cards, 24 Deal cards, 6 Plastic Tokens, a Die and a Loan record pad. Parts of standard monopoly quality. Bright colours.

The object of the game is to move your pawn through a set number of calendar month and at the end of that decided figure (1 months = 31 board squares = 1 round), the person with the most money wins!

Now, the square of the board represent events of the month. Players start with $3.5K and roll a die to move along the board. They stop on the square and take the action performed.

Some squares are good, giving you bonuses. God knows how many times we want to roll a 2 on the start of a month to get the $500 inheritance from an Aunt!!! Other squares give you mail (usually bad news with bills to pay. The worst one is a hefty electricity bill. My copy has been crushed by my brother in frustration!).

There are lottery spaces where you get a chance to win money that was anted into pot where players had put in because they stepped on a square that required them to ante.

The main principle is to buy and sell to make money. This happens with deal cards. If you step on a deal square, a deal card is flipped over. There’s a buy value and a sell value for the item. Items include: a tractor!!!, antique collection, hot dog stand and other interesting Americana. You sell it if you later land on a buyer square! If you don’t have money to buy, you can take a loan from the bank. Interest is paid off at 10% (a handy table is included in the box) at the end of the month. Loans can be paid off in $1000 increments at any time.

This usually leads to a lot of gambling: I land on a deal, buy it or take a loan to buy it and hope to land on the sell spot with my next roll to make a profit and immediately pay off the loan. Lots of cursing when the die doesn’t agree! HEE!

There’s no real strategy involved. Just buying and selling as much as possible and pray that you don’t step on a square that involves paying lots of money!

I spent many hours playing this game over and over. Not even sure why as it’s the typical roll the die, move and do the action on the board type American game. I think they still make the game.

My board is tattered but it has a place in my heart.
The entire game basically consists of drawing and selling Deal cards, regardless of all the other peripherals!

You hope to draw good Deal Cards you can afford, then hope to land on 'Buyer' so you can sell them for a profit.

We basically play for 3-4 'months' (suggestion on the rules that a game should last TWO HOURS made me burst out laughing!)

We make obligatory the buying of all insurance cards drawn as well as inclusion in all poker games.

We keep lottery tickets until they are cashed (like you're ever gonna ever land on lottery anyway!).

No savings accounts (a waste of time)

No loans (they just prolong the game to, like, infinity)

If a person runs out of money, he is out! (works best with two-player games)

Happy Pay Daying!

If you want this game, then try and get hold of the one pictured above. Newer versions have different 'Deal' cards that really unbalance the game. You make WAY too much money with the newer deal cards. I found that you only have to make 1 or 2 deals, and you are set for the game. Either find and older copy, or divide the new deal amounts by 10 to make the game more balanced.

Thread: Preview

My friend Mark and I used to play board games every week when I was in high school. Monopoly was an old favorite, but after playing it for several weeks it can get kind of old. Pay Day was one of the (many) games we would play to break up the monotony. It's a pretty enjoyable game. While it lacks Monopoly's strategy requirements, it has some intriguing foibles of its own. In order to make more money, you bid on "collectibles" which come up for auction according to the card drawn. The trick is to be able to ge rid of it by finding a Buyer before the end of the game; otherwise it's just so much junk that you spent too much money on (so true). I highly recommend this for families; people whose taste in games tends more toward German strategy games may find it too simple to really enjoy.
