Thread: This GNUs is good GNUs

Robyn from All Aboard had picked up this fun kids spelling game which we got a chance to try on the 7th Feb 2006.

Physically it consists of a series of cards with two spaces and one letter, and the letter applicator device. The device is loaded up randomly with two letters at a time until it is full. The device is then pushed down and the bottom two letters are displayed. The first player to make a word with those two letters and any remaining card, who then calls out the word and puts their hand on the card wins that round and keeps the card.

For example, E and R are the letters revealed. A card with A in the middle space could be called as EAR, or a card with A at the end could be claimed as ERA. A card with D at the end could be called as RED, but not if the D was in the middle or begining (the position of the card letter is fixed, the two letters from the device are flexible).

The two letters just used are discarded and the next two are revealed. Sometimes by consensus of all the players no word can be formed - just discard that two letter combination and try again. The winner is the player with the most cards gained when letters run out in the GNU device.

The youngest player when we played was in her teens, and the average age of the rest was probably above 30, so there was a little reserve. With kids I'd imagine the slapping of cards a la Snap would be part of the appeal, as would be the letter device and GNU theme. I could imagine as a kid trying to make some four letter words or more to work with this game.

So What's GNU is definitely worth a try for a family game that everyone can play with educational benefits (words like LAM and ELL provoked plenty of conversation in our game) that's also good fun.
