Thread: Review: Prestige Pack for Duel of Ages

Intro:
After ordering the Duel of Ages Masters Addendum from the Duel of Ages website, they included the Prestige Pack for free. See http://www.duelofages.com/ for more info. Here’s my review.

1. Contents:
It is very much like the small Skrye Add-on Pack. You get four equipment cards (one for each age) and four character cards (again, one for each age). Also you get the tokens for the characters printed on the same kind of card stock as the rest of the cards.

2. Rules
The equipment cards:
The Glass Blade (ancient) allows you to attack first in melee and can potentially destroy your opponent’s melee weapon and keep them from attacking back this round.
Dr. Winston’s Fabulous Contraption (colonial) lets you make a green wits challenge when on your HQ. Results range from getting banished (FOPP) to getting a free card (AMAZE).
Smoke Canister (modern) is used like a grenade, automatically hits, and has a 3 space area effect. It does no damage, but the entire area affected is treated as and obstacle for LOS purposes and is more difficult to travel through.
Culture Clasp (future) allows the character to be of what ever age they want, at any time, for whatever purpose.

The character cards:
Avindel has awesome stats (four of them white), high move and mediocre health. Adventures get progressively harder for him to complete. He will not attack unless he’s on an ancient or neutral space. He can ignore most terrain effects on movement in ancient spaces and has a +1 attack for bow and blade weapons.

Chief Joseph has great stats (almost all green) move 6 and health 4. His special abilities are amazing: all terrain in colonial and neutral spaces is treated as clear (with the exception of cavern walls) and he is immune to OpFire in these spaces. Any other character that begins their move in Chief Joseph’s can move with him and gain all of his movement abilities while doing so. He gains combat bonuses from bow, long rifle and brawler weapons, but gets -1 to combat when not in a colonial/neutral space.

Big Herr has mostly mediocre to bad stats but put him on a modern or neutral space and he can do the following: never takes more than 1 damage, never does worse than PASS a challenge, and challenges that require card payment give him a card instead.

GRASP has 4 move and all black stats but has 20 life! He has the following powers in neutral/future spaces: never suffers more than 2 damage, when an enemy draws more than one card he instead draws only one and must give the rest to GRASP, enemies cannot challenge adventures in future or neutral spaces and any enemy that shares a space with GRASP move give GRASP all their cards save one.

My take:
This expansion has some very interesting stuff in it. All the pieces of equipment are unique in their special powers. I especially like the Culture Clasp. The smoke canisters can be annoying if you don’t have the pieces to mark the smoke.

The characters share a common trait: they are very powerful in their own time but not so much in others. The more powerful they are in their own time the weaker they are in other times. I would also like to say GRASP is insane! He’s come up a couple of times in our games (he tends to park himself in hard to reach future spaces or HQs) and it is always my goal to kill him (though this can take a long time).

Make sure you save some extra cardboard from one of the other sets. You need to cut out the 4 character tokens and glue them to something to make them equivalent to the other character tokens. Extra cardboard from other expansions is perfect for this.

In short, what makes this expansion great is the wide variability in potential power each of the characters have. Though I’ve heard of many who dislike this set (criticism of GRASP is often very pointed) for that very same reason.
