Thread: Review for the Scrye Add-on Pack to Duel of ages.

Intro:
I was surfing through eBay one day trying to find a good deal on some used Duel of Ages expansions when I saw a “Scrye Add-on Pack” for sale. It was fairly cheap and I’d never heard of it before. I really enjoy Duel of Ages, and I’m also a bit of an obsessive when it comes to getting all the expansions, so I bid and won the auction. So here’s a review of the “Scrye Add-on Pack” for duel of ages.

1. Contents:
Short answer: not much. You get four equipment cards (one for each age) and four character cards (again, one for each age). Also you get the tokens for the characters printed on the same kind of card stock as the rest of the cards.

The equipment cards:
Huntsman’s Cloak (ancient) gives opponents -2 to hit you from range.
Spencer Carbine (colonial) is a rifle with 13 range and 3 (green) damage.
W.HO.P. (White Hot Poker) (modern) is a melee weapon with 3 (white) damage.
W.A.S.P. (Wyvern Automated Security Probe) (future) allows you to automatically amaze when rifling through your opponents base.

The character cards:
Arkin Ironshanks is better than average in close combat (but most of his stats are blue), gets bonuses in tunnels or when using swing/grenade/thrown/crossbow weapons, has lots of life, is slow moving, can’t give other players cards, can carry extra cards, and gets bonuses when fighting other characters who are carrying cards (a power if find to be quite interesting).

The Iron Pole gets bonuses while adventuring, while using swing weapons, and can instantly pop into a tunnel without having to use the entrances. Most of his stats are average with the exception of white strength.

Tomiji Hamaki begins the game with a card, can use all cards despite requirements, pays one less card on challenges that require it, never FOPPs on an adventure, and gains +1 hit on ranged weapons after the first use. His stats favor close combat, stealth and wits.

TIAX Assassin has lots of powers. Speed equals current health (starts at 9), he regenerates health, can move through enemy occupied areas, is non-living and has killer stats all around (especially close combat and aiming which are both white) his lowest being a lone blue on damage. His weakness is he has to choose an opponent’s character as a target, and, like a pet, can only attack that character until it’s eliminated at which point the next dismissed opponent is his target.

My take:
First of all, there is plenty of great information at http://www.duelofages.com/

With regards to the equipment, the only one that catches my eye is the W.A.S.P. It’s unique and is something other than a variation on existing equipment.

The characters are very useful in my opinion, especially for completing adventures. TIAX would have been waaay too powerful if they didn’t nerf him by limiting whom he could attack.

Make sure you save some extra cardboard from one of the other sets. You need to cut out the 4 character tokens and glue them to something to make them equivalent to the other character tokens. Extra cardboard from other expansions is perfect for this.

In short, is this expansion necessary? No, but there is some fun stuff for fans of Duel of Ages. Just remember there is some assembly required.
