Thread: Re: Elora Danan

One simple solution is to keep each character's face-down cards under their character card.

An alternate solution is to keep a log, in pen, that details which character has Elora Danan each turn, and when/if the card is handed from character to character. Then you can just keep the card off to the side.

Thread: Re: To ride Pegasus

Great review!

I played this game several times as a child, and I quite liked it. (It helped that I liked the movie too) IIRC, the good guys need to team up quickly before the bad guys show up. We usually had the brownies with Madmartigan so there was a better chance of "turning" Sorsha, which left Airk with Willow.

I remember both sides having a good shot at winning, but if the bad guys ever got the baby back to the castle, the game was as good as over. It was lucky you found a pegasus so early!

Thread: To ride Pegasus

Once upon a time, there was this beautiful warrioress named Sorsha. Her mother was the sorceress-queen of the realm, but Sorsha had no aptitude for magic. Her only desire was to become the best archer in the land. She achieved this aim primarily by shooting anyone who looked like they might become better than her.

Her mother was also served by a boorish general named Kael. He commanded a large army, but he doesn't come into this tale much.

The little people of the realm were unhappy with Sorsha's mother, and had stolen a child that was apparently the lawful heir to the realm or something. Whatever. All Sorsha needed to know was that she had to retrieve the child and bring it back to her mother to be sacrificed. Sorsha was all for this plan, as it would mean that one day, everything she saw would be hers.

So, Kael and Sorsha set out looking for the child. Kael, being not the brightest of generals, set out on foot along with his vast army, whilst Sorsha went to a nearby glade and captured a pegasus. Flying on her new mount was fantastic, and allowed her to quickly discover two warriors having an ale at the nearby crossroads. Both were obviously villains, so she attacked.

The two ran for it. She chased the darker-haired of the two and overwhelmed him. He had a baby with him... the child she was looking for!

Sorsha took the child and took the long route back to her mother's castle, flying far above the ground and staying away from the two pursuing warriors. She saw that Kael had procured himself a horse, but it didn't like him very much and kept trying to throw him. Kael got in the way of the warriors and prevented them from reaching the castle.

Sorsha delivered the child to her mother, it was sacrificed, their dominion over the land was assured, and they had a nice dinner.

Oh, Willow? Never saw him. Last reported sighting was somewhere in the wilds, where a grumpy enchanted had turned him into an Eborsisk. (That's a two-headed pyrohydra).

####

Despite being something of a lopsided session, there's a lot in this game to recommended it. The four heroes are seeking artefacts to help them against the evil Queen, whilst the two villains seek the baby... but they don't know which hero has it.

Willow spent the first several turns in his home town doing not much at all (he was trying to cast a fly spell and kept failing. At least his magic ability was increasing as a result). The two brownies left their home and got attacked by various "foe" cards that Randy (Kael) and I (Sorsha) played on them. They were horrible at fighting, and thus got delayed dreadfully.

As the first person Sorsha attacked (Mad Martigan) had the child, and Sorsha's pegasus gave her a 2d6 movement rate (as opposed to 2!), I rather dominated the game. Randy's Kael got a horse, but he rolled a 1, 2 & 2 for movement with it: he actually would have fared better without it!

Josh and Rich played the heroes (two apiece). The game had been bought by Josh recently, and I believe it's surprisingly good. I think the game will be somewhat closer the next time we play it.

Thread: I really don't remember the film going like this

THE SETUP

Having smuggled the prophesised baby, Elora Danan, out from under the evil Queen Bavmorda's nose, Midwife Mary makes a mad dash across the land to try and find somewhere to hide the child. Briefly considering making a small basket to float the child away downriver, to maybe be discovered by some noble Nelwyn, she quickly dismisses the idea - far too risky - instead, she decides "Where would be the last place the Queen would look for such an important child?" Well, the obvious answer is: stuffed into a crow's cage with some complete nutter she's never seen before! Applauding herself for her decision, she then flees the scene and gets eaten by a dog. Or something. I dunno.

SCENE 1 - IN WHICH WILLOW GETS PINNED

The following day, Willow sets off to join in with the festivities at the Nelwyn Village, blissfully unaware of the troubles that will beset him. On his way there he stumbles across what can only be some kind of magic wand! And it seems to have the name "Cherlindrea" inscribed on it. However, despite this seeming a fantastic find, something is in the air that day, and Willow loses all his magical abilities, pitiful though they were to begin with. Even his popular pig trick fails at the local festival, with a huge bear appearing seemingly out of nowhere, which tries to maul him before it lumbers off into the woods. This is the start of a very bad week for Willow where every day brings creatures popping out of nowhere to try and kill him. The Nelwyn council tries to banish him, fearing for their own safety, but Willow mutters something about not being able to move after fighting, which the High Aldwin of the village reluctantly admits is true.

SCENE 2 - IN WHICH MADMARTIGAN GETS FREED

Miles away, General Airk has heard news that an old friend of his, Madmartigan, has been imprisoned in a crow's cage not too far away. Okay, Madmartigan isn't the most trustworthy person in the world, but he doesn't deserve that. Dragging the Galladoorn army along with him, he sets off up the road to free his buddy from the caged prison. The reunion celebration is cut short however when they hear word that the evil Nockmaar Army is on the move. Queen Bavmorda's daughter, Sorsha, has grabbed the last horse from the Nockmaar stables and is bearing down towards them whilst General Kael and the Army lumbers along slowly behind. Cutting the reunion short, Airk declares his intention to stop the General if he can and bids farewell to Madmartigan, who decides he's going to head on over to Cherlindrea's Forest. He's been meaning to go there for quite some time, and the forest flowers are supposed to be in bloom this time of year, so it seems a perfect time to go take a wandering holiday. Maybe he'll find some blackroot for the baby too.

SCENE 3 - IN WHICH FRANJEAN & ROOL HELP A DAIKINI

Meandering his way over to Cherlindrea's Forest, Madmartigan spends several days worrying about how he'll find the rumoured hidden grove inside which contains a great treasure. It's supposed to be well guarded from trespassers. Fortunately, he encounters two small brownies, who introduce themselves as Franjean and Rool. Not having heard much of what's happening in the outside world, they've fortunately just been idling around, drinking beer. And look, this hulking great Daikini seems to be carrying a baby in his arms. What could possibly be the harm in letting him in to find The Sceptre Of Tir Asleen? None, that they can see. He seems trustworthy enough. And on top of that, Cherlindrea herself appears to Madmartigan and lets him know that if he were to head on over to Fin Raziel's Island he will find Fin Raz--- oh, no, wait, she's not there. There's a sword there though. That might be useful, right? Unfortunately they also learn that that annoying woman, Sorsha, is headed their way. Fortunately the trees seem to have slowed down her horse briefly, but a quick escape is needed, so the three strike out towards the aforementioned Fin Raz--- Sword Island.

SCENE 4 - IN WHICH GENERAL KAEL GOES NUTS

With Sorsha horsing about in the forests, General Kael decides to bring his Army to bear on the goody-two-shoes Galladoorn Army. Unfortunately, General Kael has picked up quite a bit of help on his way from Nockmaar Castle and when the two armies clash the result is rather a foregone conclusion. The struggle is prolonged, but eventually the Galladoorn Army is routed, and Kael pummels their leader, Airk, into the ground. Amid the bloody mess, however, there appears to be no sign of any children, and so the General, through the benefit of some miraculous time manipulation device he's found, decides to randomly head on over to that pesky Nelwyn village. Okay, sure, no midwife in her right mind would have set a baby adrift down a river to be randomly picked up there, or anything, but those Nelwyn - always with their pesky pig tricks. He hates them so much! Willow, still pinned in the village, had his bad luck continue as one of the other farmers left the village's front gate wide open. And they thought dogs and bears were bad! Every Nelwyn is the village is slaughtered and when Willow's battered form is brought before the General it's clear that he doesn't have the child either. It's got to be with one of those annoying people Sorsha is chasing then. But they're miles away and there's no way the General is going to be able to get--- wait a moment! Is that a stable full of Pegasi over there? Enough for the general, his minions, and the entire Nockmaar Army? It sure looks like it. What the heck are the Nelwyn doing with those!?! Never mind - requisitioning them, General Kael rubs his hands in glee.

SCENE 5 - IN WHICH SORSHA PROVES THAT ALL YOU NEED ISN'T LOVE

Despite a mad dashed flee through the forest, Madmartigan and Franjean & Rool get caught by Sorsha on her horse. When a few witty comments are thrown between the Madmartigan and Sorsha, the two brownies, whose knowledge of Daikini relationships is rather limited, decide that romance is in the air. So, throwing some Dust Of Broken Hearts into the air, they try to stop the bickering. Unfortunately, Sorsha seems rather unimpressed and, despite repeated attempts of Madmartigan's to persuade her that she could come over to their side, they only lose the angered woman when they take a conveniently found boat over to Sword Island, leaving Sorsha's horse floundering around at the far shore and striking off back up river to find the nearest bridge. Finding the sword there as promised, Madmartigan bids the brownies farewell when he finds a horse of his own back on dry land again, intending to head over to Tir Asleen, free it, and crown a new king and queen to stop Queen Bavmorda's rule. Unfortunately, General Kael has other plans and, having flown his entire army for a day and a night, he crushes Madmartigan flat as he lands a herd of Pegasi on him. Snatching the baby out the mud, he sets off back to Nockmaar Castle, with Sorsha joining him in hot pursuit when she finds a Pegasus of her own just stood around eating grass in the middle of nowhere. Laughing evilly, the two fly off into the sky - surely the Queen's plans will soon be complete!

SCENE 6 - IN WHICH AIRK MAKES A LAST DITCH ATTEMPT

Franjean & Rool meanwhile find an eagle to fly and with Madmartigan on foot now, and them on birdback, they set off in pursuit of the stolen baby. Unfortunately, the brownies' bird seem more interested in making diving attempts at Madmartigan's head, and so the two barely end up moving any faster than the stumbling Daikini beneath them. With Willow sobbing his lament at all his murdered friends, for reasons that he has no clue about, this only leaves General Airk to try and stop the evil pair from succeeding in their dastardly plans. Unfortunately, army-less, and horse-less, his bedraggled form wins no sympathy with the people he passes and so, when he finds himself at the gate of Nockmaar castle, he's alone and with no useful plans or strategy. And so, as he's coming up with a fabulous gopher-plan, a bolt of lightning strikes the top tower of Nockmaar Castle, and a child's scream is cut short.

Meanwhile, having decided to take a vacation over to a nearby Magic Spring in an attempt to turn herself back from being a Possum, the might sorceress Fin Raziel rolls her eyes and goes back to licking her paws. Idiots. What were they all thinking?
Ouch! Dust of Broken Heart is an extremely important card.

Bow: Prowess +2. May not be used with other Swords, Bows, or Daggers.

Dust of Broken Heart: When you are about to fight, you may use the Dust; the target is distracted and the fight is over. If Sorsha is in the same space as Madmartigan and the dust is used against either, they fall in love. (see rule 18).

-Mike Mayer

I bought a second hand copy of this and am trying to figure out what all it is missing. I couldn't find a place in the rulebook with a breakdown of the different cards. It just has a total count. Does anyone know of a breakdown.

Thread: Playing of Willow

Good guys Brad and Pat faced off against evil Richard. Taking advantage of newbie ignorance, Richard rode the North Wind to swoop on poor little Willow with the Army of Nockmaar. Despite wielding his magic sword to considerable effect, the little chap was overwhelmed, and the baby Elora Danaan stolen from him. The good guys, after some debate, took a relic from Cherlindrea's Forest before finally getting around to releasing Mad Martigan from his captivity. The bad guy and gal went West away from Nockmaar Castle, causing some confusion in the ranks of good. But pretty soon the Freen ferrymen showed up and took Princess Sorsha far away to the mountains near Tir Asleen. Mad Martigan saddled his horse and gave chase. Willow went nuts and charged General Kael with a Lightning Bolt spell that fizzled yet again. Airk went to rescue Willow, but instead took a pummeling and the Army of Galladoon were routed. Sorsha had to pull a few fancy moves to delay Martigan who was travelling on a horse that would have been a Melbourne Cup contender, and equipped with magic sword and armour was looking fairly formidable. A few foes to slow Martigan, an extra move, and a daring cross-country tobogganning ploy saw Sorsha at the gates of Nockmaar Castle bearing the baby. Richard was feeling a bit bad at this point - the game was going to be over after only 20 minutes, and the only experience Brad and Pat had had was of a good pummeling. That was all about to change.... Kael failed to find the heroes and they snuck away. The double move trick was pulled by the good guys, and they regrouped with Martigan. Extensive strategy consultations gave Martigan the Dust of the Broken Heart and a Haste spell, to give him four consecutive moves while Sorsha tried to prove her identity to the deaf and blind gatekeeper. Martigan attacked the fair princess as she stood alone, but a lucky arrow from her trusty bow knocked his sword out his hand. In desperation he threw the Dust of the Broken Heart and smiled his goofiest grin. Sorsha was smitten, the scene faded to a tumultuous sky over the sound of crashing waves, and suddenly Sorsha cried, aaagh I've had with living at home, I'm nearly 30 gooddammit and it's time to move on. Without as much as a goodbye note to Queen Bavmorda who, as a single mother had struggled with a demanding job (oppressing an entire kingdom) as well as with raising a baby with no decent help, Sorsha was off to join the good guys. Kael struggled on alone, but his horse was a pathetic unregistered bomb, cast off when the "good" guys upgraded to the latest Pegasus model, so he could only watch from afar as the good guys rode off into the distance, woke the sleepers of Tir Asleen and crowned the new King and Queen of the realm. He had a bad feeling Queen Bavmorda wasn't going to give him his performance bonus this month....

Good fun as always. I am not sure skill is always rewarded with victory, but it does reap the reward of pulling off some satisfying tricky plays.

robartin (#9150),

You found a good deal on a game at the PCC Swap??? I'm so envious! I went there at least five times when I lived in Pasadena (I lived a block away from it) and the best deal I found was 25$ for Twixt, and a really messed-up 'blue' editon of D&D for about 10$. I passed on both.

Maybe you snagged all the deals before I came around.

Anyway, I'm glad I own Willow and I even get to play it every once in a while.

Incidently, the Out of the Closet thrift store, just down the street from PCC, often has interesting games show up. Better than the Goodwill, from my experience.

Ralph Garner (#9127),

I'm another owner of this strangely cool game. I picked up a copy at the Pasadena City College Swap Meet for four dollars. Absolutely mint condition. I've played a couple of times, and I think it's definitely an under-rated game. Back at the time I picked it up, it was rated something like a 4/10 here, so apparently things are improving. Definitely worth the four dollars I paid, no question. My only real complaint with it so far is that it really requires exactly six players to be any good.

tandleheart (#9095), Use something in place of the card, like, for example, pennies - one for each player with one marked on the tails side, that the good players can trade when they meet.

I just think it's cool that someone else has this game! I let Sorcha be a magic user, just to even things out a little bit.
Thread: Elora Danan

Anyone have any suggestions for keeping Elora Danan secret? I don't mean in the game, but I mean the card! Because the Elora Danan card is used in every game, and handled more than any other card, the bad guys can figure out who has the baby just by looking at the back of the cards and seeing which one is most worn/faded/has most finger oil prints whenever we played. (These were the days before the deck protectors, and I also do not believe the Willow cards are the same size as a standard CCG card deck so a standard deck protector sleeve wouldn't fit the card right.)

Its rather pathetic when the summary of the game, "One of the Good characters starts with Elora Danan, but the Evil players do not know who." is completely wrong

Cheers!

Thread: Preview

While wandering around at a swap meet I spotted a copy of The Willow Game. I opened up the box and took a look - wow, nice board, hundreds of individually illustrated cards, a nice rulebook - looks cool! $4 later I was holding a mint copy of the game.

The other night I finally got around to playing it. It basically follows the plot of the movie - there are 6 characters which are always in play - 2 evil and 4 good. There are a couple hundred encounter cards, one of which is the baby Elora Danan. The good characters win in 1 of 2 ways - they can either go to Nockmar Castle and kill Bavmorda, or they can free the kingdom of Tir Asleen and carry Elora Danan there. The bad characters can only win 1 way - they must capture Elora Danan from the good characters and take her to Nockmar Castle.

Essentially, the good guys are trying to conceal which of them is carrying the baby, and the bad guys are trying to figure this out. The cards add all sorts of magic and combat abilities to each character, which really makes the game interesting. When opposing characters meet, they can engage in combat and steal cards from one another. This turns out to be the meat of the game. The bad guys chase the good guys around and try to steal the baby from them.

The game is highly atmospheric and very well tied to the theme. There are individually illustrated cards for pretty much every story element from the movie and even more. Although I've never played Talisman, this game really looks a lot like Talisman what with all the cool looking cards.

The one problem I see with the game is that it always has 6 characters in play. So with 2 players, one player controls 2 characters while the other player controls 4. This can be a lot of cards to keep track of, so the game really plays best with exactly 6 people. But if you can find 6 people who are into fantasy themed games, or even better, fans of the movie - this is a cool game with a pretty good bit of depth.
