Thread: EcoFluxx - 2 short [session report]

When you have a game where rules change dynamically and so dramatically, games can be VERY long or VERY quick. When you have the max 6 players, it doesn't necessarily extend the gameplay time, as having more players can push things closer towards an end, like putting out more keepers for you to steal, or inadvertantly changing goals to cause you to win. However, the fact that 2 people haven't played the game before should've meant the game lasting longer, but they didn't.

Game #1
One thing that DOES speed things up in this game is having a high draw # and optionally high play # for rules. Once that happens things kick into high gear into some 'lightning round'. It was after a couple round of turns into the game that I realized I could win after drawing 6 cards. I had the Winter: Win if you have trees and no one has leaves goal. I also had the Trees keeper. I looked around for anyone who had the leaves keeper, but no did, so played those 2 cards FTW! Didn't even need to play the remaining 4 out of 8 cards in my hand as per the rules at that time. That game only lasted 5 minutes

Game #2
This game was similar to the first one. High octane drawing and playing of cards. It started off slow enough, but got bumped up to draw 2 cards and quickly graduated to draw 5, play 3. Ironically enough, I lost this game the same way I won the last one. Someone played the Winter: Win if you have trees and no one has leaves goal right before playing the Trees keeper card. It mildly burns me to this day since I was gonna play a leaves keeper. Now I'll know better to be on the lookout for that winning combination in the future, and to play leaves keeper as a precaution. That game also lasted 5 minutes.

All in all, good filler to kill time before dinner.
Thread: Re: EcoFluxx: Not just Fluxx with different pictures

I understand what talking about when you say Eco Fluxx has a different feel than the original, but my friends and I still play Eco Fluxx light-hearted and silly. In a recent game, my friend had Water and Poison, so I turned my Fish upsidedown and said it was very sick and the Bears should avoid it.

I've played the original Fluxx, Eco Fluxx, Family Fluxx, and Zombie Fluxx and I like the original and Eco the best!

Thread: EcoFluxx: Not just Fluxx with different pictures

Out of the two kinds of people in the world, those who love Fluxx and those who hate Fluxx with the fury of a thousand charging rhinos, I belong to the former category. Fluxx is one of my favorite light, random games. Fluxx often ends up in my coat pocket or in my satchel and I have played it everywhere from churches to movie theaters to hospitals.

If you are not familiar with Fluxx, it is the card game of every changing rules. When the game begins, there are only two rules. Draw a card, play a card. There aren’t even any winning conditions for the game. Additional rules and winning conditions are on the cards, which will be played and changed through out the game.

If you really don’t know how to play Fluxx, look at either my review of Fluxx or my review of Family Fluxx. This review is going to be less about how to play EcoFluxx and more about how it is different than the other flavors of Fluxx that are out there. If you don’t like Fluxx, you’re not going to like EcoFluxx, plain and simple. Instead, I am going to try and answer the question “If I like Fluxx, will I like EcoFluxx?”

Okay, with my rambling preamble out of the way, let’s talk about EcoFlux.

EcoFluxx is an ecological version of the Fluxx game. The artwork, the keepers, the goals and some of the actions all reflect this. While I can easily guess what Looney Labs philosophy is on the environment, the game is not very preachy. Instead, it serves to present a model of the way the environment works. If that sounds a little strange for a version of Fluxx, well, to be honest, it is.

The keepers in EcoFluxx have line drawings of animals, plants and environmental aspects like air and water. Unlike the 70s pop-art style of regular Fluxx or the Highlights for Kids art style of Family Fluxx (NOT a putdown of Family Fluxx’s art! I think it looks really cool!), the art in EcoFluxx looks very realistic. In fact, it looks like the sort of drawings you might find in a text book or a field guide.

Some of the action cards and virtually all of the goals serve as miniature lessons in ecology. For example, one of the goals is Clouds, which is a combination of the keepers Air and Water. Another is Decay, which is a combination of Worms and Mushrooms.

There are also some goals which actually have some effect on the way the game is played. I call them “Foodchain Goals” but that’s just my personal name for them. They will state that one the keepers eat another keeper. Rabbits eat Leaves, for example, or Spiders eat Insects. If someone has the keeper that is doing the eating, they win as long as anyone has the food keeper out on the table.

This isn’t the first time a goal has included the state of the entire table as part of the goal. For instance, there is Peace, no War in regular Fluxx. However, this is the first time that playing a keeper could let someone else win. It’s not much of a change, I admit, but it is a change and an added consideration when you play a keeper. There is a Poison keeper, though, that will prevent your keeper from being eaten, but that’s just one card out of the entire deck.

Apart from that, EcoFluxx really is just played like regular Fluxx.

However, EcoFluxx does have a different feel compared to the other Fluxx games. I found that when we played it, we became more serious. It wasn’t as funny as the other versions. Instead, we became thoughtful and began discussing the mini-lessons that cards were showing us. I found myself remembering my rural childhood in the woods, old issues of Ranger Rick and scouting. Maybe it was just inside my head but EcoFluxx really felt different to me.

All that might sound a bit harsh but it’s not. For me, regular Fluxx is a party game while EcoFluxx is an educational game and an enjoyable one at that. In fact, I am impressed that the framework of light and fluffy Fluxx can be stretched to make a game that really does have some educational value. In fact, I am curious to see what other ways Fluxx can be used. A historical Fluxx might be very interesting, although Looney Labs has kind of already done this with Chrononauts.

EcoFluxx is not the first version of Fluxx I’m going to reach for when I need a light card game. However, I am very glad that I own and I know that I will play it again. In fact, I think it would make an excellent game for the classroom, a youth group or a scouting pack.
Thread: Isn't that some sort of diease?

A group of coworkers and I get together twice a week to play boardgames/cardgames at lunch. We play in the cafeteria at work and so we regularly have spectators that observe the games. Often we can convince them to play.

Lately, we have been joined by "Jen" (name changed to prevent beatings) who likes to play but is notorious for not hearing/misunderstanding the rules as we explain them to her. She has always accused us of making up new rules as we go along and often will do inexplicable things in the game because she isn't understanding the results or just wants to screw people up.

We now join our session already in progress...

Jen: Hey guys.

All: Hi Jen.

Jen: I have the perfect game for you. Since you always like to make up new rules, I have a game where you change the rules all the time.

Me: I've heard of that. Seems like some people love it and some really hate it.

John: Let's try it.

Me: How do you play Jen?

Jen: I don't know.

Mike: What do you mean you don't know? Haven't you ever played it?

Jen: Well... No. But it sounds like something you guys would like. I'll read the rules and tell you how it works as we go. Can someone help me shuffle these? They don't want to bend.

Jen: Okay, Uriah, you go first.

Me: Alright, I'll play poison.

Jen: I play a new goal, metamorphosis.

Mike: I play "Play 3"

Jen: Now you have to play 3 more cards.

Mike: no I played 1 so I only have to play 2 more.

John: I think he's right.

Me: Let me see the rules!

Me: Let's settle on some rules we can agree on, wether or not they are right.

Jen: When you play a draw card, you immeadiately get to draw that many cards.

All: That's fine.

John: If you have met the Play condition for the current play rule your turn is over. Agreed?

All: Okay.

Me: Then lets start the game again.

Jen: Now you need to play 4 more.

Me: No, he only needs to play 3 more.

Jen: I don't know about you guys.

John: You know you just let me win?

Jen: Oh I know.

Mike: But you could have seen if you could win, Play all is on the table and you probably have things you could do to win.

Jen: Oh yeah but this is easier. what did you think.

John: I liked it, you just can't get married to your win condition.

Me: It's a good light filler game.

Mike: It's crazy. I still think we were playing wrong.

Me: I agree. Thanks for bringing it Jen.

Jen: I just knew you guys liked changing rules so much that I thought you might like it.

overall a fun game with a huge luck factor. Anyone else have a "Jen" in their group?

Thread: Re: Different and Fun!!

I much prefer EcoFluxx to the original Fluxx, because the keepers fall into a "food chain" and there's some strategy about how early in the game you should play them. I wouldn't want to play Fish unless I was sure the Bears Eat Fish rule is gone, or I also have the Bear. That little bit of extra strategy makes the randomness of the rest of the game more tolerable for gamers who need structure.

Thread: Different and Fun!!

A friend had a birthday recently and said that she wanted Fluxx for her birthday. Well, she got both Fluxx and EcoFluxx. Having never heard of the game, I was a little curious, but I had no idea of how much fun I was in for!

EcoFluxx is a card game consisting of 84 cards. There are four types of cards: rules, actions, keepers and goals. Keepers are placed on the table in front of you. These are used to achieve the goals. The rule cards are just that, new rules. Action cards cause you to immediately take an action, be it stealing someone's keeper or to switch hands with someone. Finally, goals are what you are striving to reach. For instance, one of the goals is Bears eat Fish. In that case, the person that has the keeper "Bears" wins if someone has the keeper "Fish" on the table.

Each player is dealt three cards, and new players are welcome to join in midgame, if they want. To start with, there is NO goal to the game, only one rule....Draw 1 and Play 1. As play proceeds, the rules will change. The rules will change anything from the number of cards you can draw or play to the number of cards you can keep in your hand.

If you're looking for a light, easy, fun to play card game the Fluxx family is for you! Many don't like the constant change of the rules (hence the name of the game), but I think it adds a degree of humor to the game you just won't get from static rules!

Thread: What the Fluxx?

My wife and I have played exactly six games of EcoFluxx: two have been extremely short; three have lasted about 10 minutes; and in one very long match we were on our fourth time through the deck before the game ended. You definitely have to be in the mood for this game--I'm just not sure what that mood is.

Last night we played one of the short matches.

We had about three rounds with the basic rules, before Penny played a Draw 2 card, which helped get the game moving. Then Penny played the Play All card, but trashed that rule in process of playing her hand. Then she played the Share the wealth card and our Keepers were re-distributed. Then I played an Action card that allowed us to trade Keepers, and I traded my Trees for her Tadpoles--not as exciting as it sounds.

She then played the Goal Winter which allowed her to win because she had Trees and no one had Leaves.

That was it. Game over.

Inoffensive chaos, and in very short form. We did play another game immediately after, and it was a little longer and mildly more interesting. However, I do, and will likely always, live in fear of a match where we go through the deck four times in search of . . . . a winner?

Thread: While waiting for the AGoT game to be set up

Date: June 17th, 2006

Game: Eco-Fluxx

Players: Alexander and Valdir (myself)

My previous session of this game: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/102112

During the week leading to our meeting of the Montreal Boardgames Meetup Group, it was agreed that A Game of Thrones would get played. There was even a chance that two tables would be going at the same time because two of the members would bring their copies of the game, one in English and the other in French (us being in Montreal and all that...).

I had said up front that I would rather not to play this game, that I would prefer to play some Euros instead. I have never played it, but my son mentioned that it is like Diplomacy on steroids and that is all it takes to turn me off from a game...

I arrived at our meeting place in Concordia University a bit late because I had to attend an annoying condominium meeting (it only happens once a year, but what a bore it is!), so some members were already playing Inka while waiting for the others.

Alexander arrived just after me, so I asked if he wanted to play something fast. I proposed either Eco-Fluxx or Pickomino and he opted for the former, probably because he knew it already. Or it may have been the chickens on the cover of the latter that turned him off... Who knows?...

Benoît and his girlfriend Véronique arrived just after we had played our very first cards, so Alexander asked them if they wanted to join us in our little card game. They declined because they wanted to get the AGoT ready for play (apparently they were all newbies and there was a ton of things to be checked out before the first game could happen...).

So, Alexander and I continued our game. As you probably know, there is not much to say about a game of Fluxx or any of its incarnations. Either you do a blow by blow account of the game (which would be extremely boring and utterly useless) or you're stuck with nothing to say...

I just remember that once more the player who won (in this case, myself) used the Play All card to match the current goal with his keepers. This has become a common thread in my games of Fluxx: a player gets this powerful card, keep it until he has all the good keepers and then dumps everything to win the game. Oh well...

Final Score
Valdir wins. Doh!
Thread: Two short games to close the gaming meeting

Date: March 4th, 2006

Game: Eco-Fluxx

Players: Charles, JF, Johnny, Kernon and Valdir (myself)

After Pitchcar Mini some folks had to leave, they had friends and relatives coming over to their places, so they had to go. We were then left with five players. I was thinking of going home myself, but the other guys wanted some more gaming. I agreed, as long as it wouldn't be anything too taxing on the brain. I brought out my three card games and Eco-Fluxx was chosen.

We played two games in a row, they were both short. In the first one Johnny won because I had just changed the rules, so that he got seven cards in his hand and had to play them all. He got a winning combination and played it, of course.

The game was over so quickly that we all wanted to have another go at it, so the cards were reshuffled and we were off again. This second game went a bit longer. Someone played the nasty hand limit 0, so that for a while we were playing with whatever came from the draw deck. Fortunately I was able to reset the rules and we had something more meaningful to do in our turns.

In the end it was JF, sitting right beside Johnny, who got the winning combo and ended the game. Then, our March meeting was officially over. Some of the guys were going for pizza, but I had a throbbing headache (these past few days I've got a nasty cold) and I wouldn't be good company, so I came home instead.

Thread: Two games, a father/son victory

Date: February 10th, 2006

Game: Eco-Fluxx

Players: Ali, Attila, Chantal, Fury, Haleh, Moe, Sasha, Tasia and Valdir (myself)

Last month the IITS Tower of Babel gaming group, which usually meets in the large conference room of our department was hosted by Denis, one of our members who lives near our workplace. This time, Haleh, another member who lives at walking distance from Concordia University, offered her place to host our meeting. We were happy to oblige.

Two of the regulars could not join us due to other commitments but as a compensation, three new players, who live in the same building, were brought to the meeting. As a result we had nine people willing to play.

I really wanted them to play TtR, but it would be hard to break up this group, so I opted to play the card games that I had brought along, the first one being Eco-Fluxx. Now, I know that the box says that the game can only accommodate up to six players, but considering the chaotic nature of the game, I didn't think that adding more players would break it. And I was right, everybody had a blast! We played twice in a row, the two games were quite fast (twenty minutes each, I believe).

I dealt three cards to each player and said that I could not tell them the rules because the rules were written on the cards that would be played. I put the basic rule card in the middle of the table and said we could start. Fury asked who would be the start player, I answered that according to the rules, whoever wishes to go first, goes first, so he went first.

Fury shows a keeper and wants to put it in the middle of the table. I explain to him that keepers are keepers, you keep them in front of you. Now, on Tasia's turn she plays a keeper as well. "Oh boy, now everybody is only going to play keepers!" I say half joking. But next is Sasha, the youngest player (only eleven years old, he's Attila's son), he plays an action card and now the game starts for real.

We go around the table and people start "getting" the game and some strategies begin to form in their minds. After a few rounds they are already making meaningful choices when playing their cards. The rules change to play all, draw 5, then are reset by Ali and we go round and round.

Finally Attila, who's sitting by his son, plays four cards that give the game to his son, making Sasha our first winner.

The guys seemed to like the game quite well and wanted to play again. Moe had bowed out somewhere during the first game. I'm not even sure if he even really played the game, he just left the table to read a book... Anyway, we played the second game with "only" eight players. This time the game is much more structured, the players know what's going on. Even though they understand that each player has little control over the game, they do what they can.

After another ten or fifteen minutes of going around, Attila plays a keeper and then a goal that makes him win the game. The goal says that he had to have something and someone had to have something else. We were in doubt if the "someone" meant "someone else" but we followed what was written on the card and assumed that the "someone" might be the same person and we declared Attila the winner, making this session of Eco-Fluxx a father/son affair.

Final Score
[c]Player:
Sasha, the son: wins the first game
Attila, the father: wins the second game
[/c]All seemed to enjoy this little game. It's a bit weird to have the rules changing from play to play, but once they got into the rhythm, everything flowed very well. As I said before, the game did not seem to suffer from being stretched from six to eight players.

Thread: 2-Player Session

I bought this game on a whim yesterday after ducking into the local game shop. Just one of those things, you can't just "walk by", you have to go in, whether you intended to or not.

So, last night I set out to try it out. I didn't know much of anything about this game (or the original Fluxx), nor did my wife. So, we quickly read the rules, of which there are only two when you start.

We played two games and they ran fairly quickly, probably clocking in at 10-15 minutes each.

During the first game, I unfortuntaly played the "wrong" new rule card too soon into the game. I played the Hand Limit 0 card (or whatever it's called), so no one could carry any cards into the next hand - you had to discard everything once your turn was over. This would have been a nice card well into the game, but nearly caused a train wreck using it as the first rule addition. It also might have had something to do with there just being two players. However, once we got out of that by updating the limit the game went quickly and was quite fun. In the end my wife won the game by changing the goal to "Herpetology" - she had the Snakes keeper card along with Frogs.

Our second game got off to a nice start with the rules and goals changing rapidly and niether of us seeming to get anywhere. But as this game seems to play out, the game was won unexpectedly. My wife had played the Earthworms goal, and didn't see that I already had dirt in front of me. On my turn I luckily picked up the Earthworms card and played it. I won this time.

We enjoyed both rounds, though the second was better since we were getting the hang of it a bit more. It's a very light game, and could even be educational for younger kids. Having studied Biology myself, I enjoyed the theme, however simple. Luck seemed to play a big part in the game, though there's a small amount of strategy that can be employeed. It was a good light, quick game - which was perfect since we were both a bit tired even before we started.

Thread: First impressions on EcoFluxx

Looney Labs awarded me a free deck of EcoFluxx as a prize in the Fluxx Buxx contest. It arrived in the mail today, and my fiancee and I cracked open the box, eager to give this new Fluxx blend a try. We ended up playing 8 games of it that night.

What it is: 84 cards of the familiar mixture of Keepers, Goals, New Rules, and Actions. All of the Keepers and Goals are new, as are some of the Actions and one of the New Rules. All the Keeper art was done by Allison Frane, who's sketches border on photo quality. The cards have the traditional back design, so they are compatible with other Fluxx decks. The color bars for the EcoFluxx cards have subtle patterns in them to help differentiate them from other Fluxx cards; otherwise the EcoFluxx cards use the same layout as thier Fluxx 3.0 brethern. The Basic Rules card has been updated, and now has text on the back side explaining the gameplay (it's the short story from the Fluxx 2.1 box back). The rules sheet is practically identical to Fluxx 3.0.

How it plays: First thing's first, EcoFluxx has all the chaos of classic Fluxx, but with a nature theme. All of the Keepers represent animals (Rabbits, Fish, Spiders), plants (Trees, Seeds) or environments (Dirt, Sunshine). The goal cards reflect the relative placement of each organism on the food chain; these are called the "eating" goals. An example of this is the goal Rabbits Eat Leaves, where a player with Rabbits wins if any player has Leaves on the table. Other goals illustrate combined partnerships, such as Basking (the player with Snakes and Sunshine wins). Lastly, the Keeper Poison prevents your Keepers from being "eaten" by predators; this helps prevent others from winning, but also prevents your own chances of winning! Since all the Keepers are interconnected through the goal cards, there are some interesting tactical decisions to be made when choosing to play a Keeper. Organisms lower on the food chain may help an opponent more than a keeper higher up on the food chain, but also are more useful to you.

Another theme in EcoFluxx is a light educational sense. Some of the goals illustrate biological lessons in simple ways that encourage questions. The Ferns goal (Leaves, but not Flowers) introduces the concept of non-flowering plants. Tadpoles become frogs through Metamorphosis, another goal card. Other cards illustrate deciduous trees, pollination, composting, herpetology, and extinction. EcoFluxx may not substitute for a biology lesson, but it would be a good way to broach and demonstrate ecological ideas to children, hopefully encouraging curious questions.

Lastly, EcoFluxx urges activism towards nature conservation; it includes an info card promoting conservation as a compassionate act towards others. As with the imfamous Stoner Fluxx, Looney Labs has pledged to donate proceeds from the sale of EcoFluxx to small environmental charities through the EcoFluxx Foundation. As with other Looney Labs games, the packaging is also refreshingly minimal.

The Bottom Line: if you liked Fluxx, you won't be disappointed with EcoFluxx. If Fluxx wasn't to your taste, EcoFluxx won't change your mind. It will delight young and old alike, and is a perfect companion on your next nature hike or campout. You don't have to be a tree-hugger to enjoy EcoFluxx; it'll get you to smile and just might save the Earth in the process. Happy Trails!
