First Aid packs?

I'm positive it ain't toilet paper!

From everything I've seen in the past they are first aid packs (a pressure dressing).

with German tanks mounted with schurzen

Yes - improved protection against the hand held AT weapons that started to appear more and more toward the end of the war. I'm not sure we'll see any additional rules in the LnL system to address the difference in armor protection unless it's a scenario specific rule. LnL has typically avoided adding rules to the rule set, but has always added some 'flavor' via the SSRs.

Thread: Skirts and toilet rolls.

I didn't know whether to pitch this as a rules question or a general comment question. I know though that the LnL crowd are hungry for any discussion on both BoHs and the game series generally...

First, what are those little rolls the airborne officers have mounted on the front of their helmets? They aren't toilet rolls are they? So what would they be? First Aid packs? Mosquito nets all rolled up? Someone tell me, as the suspense is driving me mad.

Not BoHs specific: with German tanks mounted with schurzen - do hollow charge projectiles such as the bazooka diminish in inpact against these? Or rather, should tanks with schurzen be so protected? There is a tank in the excellent Dark July with skirts mounted. It's not an issue in BoHs but probably will be in the Bulge pack due soon.

Thanks.

It seems like history really isn't an interest of yours.

A game is a game. I play it for the game, not the history. My inkjet printer is not as good as Mark's , and for ME to take it to Kinko's or another copy service? Let's just say I don't get volume discounts.

Just my $.02. I'd want it.

Seconded, a homemade map job to me can't compare with a professional printing. Thanks for mentioning that they are available for those who like DIY, but I want and will pay for a zipper pack.

1. If I gain a hero and haven't got any left in the counter mix is the gain forfeited?

yes

2. The inner sleeve to Not One Step Back says I can't stack gold Soviet line units with red Guard units (with the exception of the commissar and the nurse). Does that mean guards can't stack with T34s, KV1s etc (which are all gold)? Probably not but I thought I'd ask. (OK. I know this applies to NOSB and not to BoH but I figured that you are a friendly bunch and won't hold it against me.)

I apply this only to MMCs, not vehicles.

3. What is the point of those pesky tank crews? Is it just that there is an off chance of them getting their arses in gear in two game-turns time and killing somebody?

In theory, they could help / hurt chances for victory as they can be killed, or take a VP hex for example, if ignored. Honestly - I don't like them all that much as they don't (in my opinion) add anything to gameplay.

That type of stuff isn't finalized until we go through optimization.

Certainly the game has solo play against the AI and PBEM. We are also working on online play.

The game includes a branching German campaign and a branching Soviet campaign, which both take place in and around Stalingrad. Also included are 12 stand-alone scenarios from other pasrts of the war.

Thread: Re: stacking and firing strategies

For me this is a hard question to answer. I don't tend to look for a sweet spot since the battlefield is so dynamic. Getting enough FP into place can be difficult if you setup first, so it really comes down to how important the shot is. I'll take a shot at just about anything as long as being spotted doesn't put the units in too much danger. Then sometimes I'm forced to shoot if a) the hex is in my critical path b) enemy units are running in to melee or c) fodder is being sent adjacent just for spotting purposes. In some respects which side of the the fight you're on (off vs def) really dictates how much luck you can allow for. On offense you need to push to achieve victory so you're going to take a few more chances. On defense you'll sit back and take the best shots.
Thread: Re: leadership bonus

There are three things to remember when using leadership from a good order leader:

1. Leadership bonus applies for damage checks even if the leader has markers.
2. Leadership bonus applies for attacks only when the leader doesn't have operative markers (moved, fired, ops complete, etc.).
3. Leadership bonus for spotting only applies when the leader himself makes the spotting.

In the Assault on Verville, the scenario in the demo download, it says that control of a building can come from a hero passing through it. Yet elsewhere the scenario says that heroes cannot be generated. Is this an error or am I missing something?

Thread: leadership bonus

5.03 of V3 says that if a good order leader is present in a hex in which defenders are making Damage Checks, the leader's modifier is subtracted from Damage Check die roll. Does this apply if the leader is under a Move, Low Crawl, Fire or Ops Complete marker?

Rule 5 does not so limit it. Reading the rules strictly, it would seem that the leadership bonus benefits the defender whether or not the leader is under a status counter. Rule 11.11 of V3 Rules, which addresses the effect of a status counter on a leadership bonus, only says that the leadership bonus does not apply to a unit's Firepower in an attack roll if the leader is under a status counter. 11.11 does not say anything about a Damage Check.

The unofficial quick guide (available in the files section) is ambiguous. Under the Damage Check segment, the guide notes that a leader bonus applies to a Damage Check roll. But a parenthetical following notes that the leadership bonus is not applicable to an attack if the leader is under a status counter. That parenthetical seems irrelevant to a Damage Check since a DC is not an attack.

Thread: stacking and firing strategies

When building stacks, what kind of firepower makes the stack worthwhile - any particular minimum or sweet spot (eg. trying to get to 5 firepower or something)? Is there a specific ratio to look for (such as firing with a modified firepower of 5 against a defender with a target modifier of 2). Obviously the higher the firepower the better, but I am wondering if there is a sweet spot you guys look for.

I know one player on the board has mentioned he usually holds back firing, waiting until he can catch his opponent moving through open ground. It seems that stacks holed up in buildings firing at each other tends to lead to an impasse.

Yes, I started playing like that. But then, I haven't found anything in the rules that says so.

Also, one can argue that OP Fire is too reactive to get any advantage of the organizational skills from leaders.
