If I wasn't clear on that point, the Columbia-style block games use the blocks for FOW, this system, and the similar C&C system do not.

One minor complaint I had about the blocks...

When they lie flat, there're a nice "sturdy counter" as you point out. To march a unit in "column order", you're expected to turn the unit on its side. That's where the thin block approach starts to fall down - quite literally. I'd recommend some homemade "column order" markers and forget trying to set up the dominos.

Thread: Re: For Honor and Glory -- a review

A minor point in the review--the die roll determines additional Action Points which can be used each turn. There is a base number of Action Points assigned in each scenario setup, which is determined by the historical effectiveness of the army and commander, and which you will get to use every turn. So you might have 3AP assigned by the scenario, and then at the start of each turn you roll to get 1, 2 or 3 additional APs. Like Commands and Colors, you almost always have a lot more you want to do each turn than you have Action Points.

This is a great system for those who like the ease and speed of play of Commands and Colors, but feel constrained by the card draw. Even though you can be almost as constrained by the AP+die roll, it feels like you have more direct control. I don't really prefer one system over the other, but they do definitely feel different in play.

Thread: Re: For Honor and Glory -- a review

Solid, fair descriptive review.

The component upgrade in "Hold the Line" makes that game almost a must for fans of this system, for the original hex board is both springy and slippery (at the least a sheet of plexiglas is recommended).

That said, it's good to see anyone attempt a tactical game of the 1812 war in North America, and the inclusion of naval activity was ambitious.

I much prefer to play using "Risk" figures (from the Napoleonic-themed traditional RISK set) to the wooden counters/tiles; it's easier to see at a glance what the cohesion level of a given unit is, and there are enough colors in a RISK box to differentiate unit types (recommend blue for US regulars, gray for US militia, red for British line, red with one green for British light, red with one black for British elite, yellow for natives).

I sincerely hope that their Mexican-American War design and "For Queen and Country" (Zulu War) are not far behind.

Thread: For Honor and Glory -- a review

For Honor and Glory is the War of 1812 edition of Worthington Games' Wars for America series.

These games have more than a passing resemblance to Borg';s Commands & Colors system.

Some of the differences are really just in style. For example, In FHAG firing units roll the same number of dice no matter what the range is, but with a reduced chance of hitting per die, in C&C the chance of hitting remains the same, but longer range fire uses fewer dice. The end results are similar.

Other differences are more substantive. While both game systems limit the number of units a player can order. C&C does it using cards that are usually keyed to a portion of the battlefield, while FHAG uses a die roll that determines how many "Action Points" the player has to activate units, but those action points can be spent anywhere on the map.

In both games the physical presentation of the units serves to disguise their real nature, which is as entities which firing and move characteristics varying by type and possessing the ability to take 1-4 hits.

The game is fairly straightforward and of low complexity. During his turn a player uses action points to activate units to perform movement and combat activities. Most activities cost one AP, although there are a few special actions such as close combat that cost 2 AP. All combat is handled the same way. The attacking unit rolls dice (generally three) with hits occurring depending on the range and the type of firing unit. For example, an artillery unit firing at an adjacent unit hits on a 4,5 or 6. An infantry unit firing at a range of 2 hexes hits only on a 6. Terrain effects can reduce the hit numbers and some have movement effects.

Like the C&C games, FHAG is a scenario based system with battlefields constructed using terrain tiles added to the plain map. Victory is usually measured in VPs, with one VP earned per eliminated unit (similar to the "flags" of C&C-series games) or for holding terrain (also similar to many C&C games)

Physically the game is roughly similar in presentation to the Columbia Games standard, which is usually considered pretty good by wargame standards, although it's worth noting that Worthington Games has raised the bar significantly with its latest War of America series game (Hold the Line) which is made in Germany to euro standards.

For Honor and Glory includes four card-stock maps (two land and two ocean) that create a 9 by 13 (land) or 11 by 13 (sea) playing surface, although some battles modify this further. Terrain tiles are a thin card stock.

The rules and scenarios are contained in three booklets, all printed in two colors.

The playing pieces are wooden block with stickers affixed. Unlike Columbia-style block games, the wooden blocks are not used to create any fog-of-war, instead they basically create thick, sturdy counters. Pieces are used laying flat on the map and are turned around and/or flipped to represent step losses. There are also a couple of metal miniature warships for use with the naval rules.

Units are mostly regular and elite infantry, with militia, light infantry, marines, Indian warbands, artillery and dragoons making an appearance.

There are 10 well-chosen scenarios depicting most of the war's major battles and providing a good mix of different game experiences.

The game also includes a naval system and 11 scenarios for that, but this portion of the system is definitely very simplistic. Ships are rated for firepower and ability to take hits. Boarding actions are fought between marine contingents, also with a hit-based combat system. Movement is ordered using order markers (specially marked regular infantry units doing double-duty) with wind direction having a minor effect. The naval scenarios comprise a mix of single-ship duels, some 2- and 3-1 gang ups and two squadron actions based on two of the big Lake battles (Erie and Champlain).

Overall I rate For Honor and Glory as a success as land warfare game, prov ding an entertaining game while being reasonably historically accurate . The naval game is too simplistic, however.

From my game blog at http://pawnderings.blogspot.com

Thread: Deficiencies in Manual

Though most the rules for this game seem clear, there are some errors/omissions that might sting some of you as they did me.

1) The manual has no game contents list

How are you supposed to know if something is missing?
See below for the my listing of the contents.

2) pg 3 LABEL PLACEMENT ON COUNTERS

2 sheets of labels are provided. Oddly, only 4 VP stickers exist. The instructions clearly say
"3.5 The labels in the game should be applied to each side of the wooden counters"
As well, the chart shows
VP Units: Counter Front VP, Counter Back VP

Don't do it! Some scenarios show 3 or more VP markers. Obviously, the intent was either to provide more stickers or label only one side of the block. There is no need to label both sides for VP. Only label one side. My set has enough extra brown blocks, but I didn't notice in time! Too late for one of my blocks.

3) The Naval Rules 2.4 make no mention of where to stick the Wind direction marker and Compass stickers. Anyone? I'd guess one side on two separate brown blocks.

4) 7.5 COLUMN MOVEMENT

To move to line formation it cost 1 AP. To change into or out of column formation cost 1 AP and the unit may not perform any other movement or action during the turn.

Drop the first sentence please.

5) The language in 11. Advanced/Optional Rules looks rushed and not proofread.

pg 7
11.1 If they fail, then it cost the extra AP and the attacking unit can only conduct fire.

I think this means, if you fail to enter close combat then you have the option of spending an additional AP and conducting a normal fire attack with the same unit.

11.8 Leaders add 1 extra dice ... (should be die)

11.9 This could have been worded a bit more eloquently. I would suspect in a lot of cases there would be no retreat path if a defending unit is sandwiched. But if it did manage to retreat after the first attack, would the +1 to the die roll still be applied to the second unit's attack??

11.13 Who is "Winder"? (winter?)

Someone asked me about the inventory. Here is what the my game contains:

4 maps (2 land, 2 sea)
2 terrain label sheets
2 metal ships
3 dice
2 sheets of stickers; once applied to blocks you have:

red blocks: 32 infantry, 2 leaders, 7 ships
blue blocks: 32 infantry, 2 leaders, 8 ships
brown blocks: 3 Indian infantry, 1 leader, 3 British ships, 3 American ships, 4 VPs

Extra blocks: 4 red, 3 blue, 2 brown (oops, but still have compass and directional wind marker stickers and not sure yet if they go on one brown block or two)

The rules allow two ships to occupy the same hex (i.e. failed boarding attempt). They do not cover how that situation affects combat.

in particular

1) Can a hex with both friend and enemy ships be fired upon?
2) Can ship in a hex with another ship fire?
3) Can two ships in the same hex fire at each other?
a) What is the range ... or at least the "to hit" number?
b) Which broadsides can be brought to bear?
c) What is the facing of the other ship (i.e. Crossing the T)?

Thread: Re: Work with Minis?

From the beginning I've used the new tricorne-hat RISK figures for "Clash for a Continent." I use a mounted board with the right hex grid (Battle Cry, Battlelore or Memoir '44 boards will work) for greater rigidity so the figures don't topple; when I get a little time I plan to paint them and mount them two to a stand, each stand in a unit representing one morale level.

For "1812" the older shako-hatted RISK figures work equally well, and if you can get your hands on a couple copies of the old Milton Bradley "Broadside" game from the '60s you have plenty of ships for the naval game in a scale that fits the hexes just fine and looks good.

I like both games much better with minis as it eliminates the need to squint at the counters to read current morale state and I find it easier to remove or add a figure than to spin the tile around all the time.

Suggested colors for 1812: red for British line, green or black for rifles, black or yellow for Canadian militia. If necessary, use one black figure in a British unit to designate an Elite unit. Blue for US line, gray for US militia.

We've been using miniatures with Clash for a Continent (AWI/FIW version) plus a hex cloth and real terrain. It works very well--there is more to the game than my initial playtest revealed. We use both the advanced and basic rules with the minis and the only thing we eliminated (assuming the rules for CfaC and FHaG are the same) are we odn't allow an advance into a hex you clear by fire.

Bob in Edmonotn

Thread: Re: Customer Service

I need to echo here on the quality of Worthington Games' customer service, and, more importantly, the quality of their games.

This is a company that deserves some real attention, as they've got some good stuff. Like the poster above, I had a small problem with my copy of the game, "Clash For A Continent", the sister game to "For Honor And Glory", and the company sent me a whole new copy.

I've had dealings with lots of game companies, usually good, sometimes bad, but Worthington was definitely above-and-beyond-the-call-of-duty.

I own 3 of their games - the two mentioned above as well as "Victoria Cross," and I highly recommend their products. In fact, I've preordered their game "Cowboys: Way Of The Gun," as "Gunslingers" is long out-of-print, and I have no doubt Worthington games will handle the theme with an outstanding game.

BGGers really need to keep an eye out on the stuff Worthington Games is producing. They've got a good aesthetic, good themes, solid games, great customer support.

And no, I'm not a shill. Just think this company deserves a closer look and a pat on the back.

-TF

Thread: Customer Service

I would just like to say that the Customer service for this company is fantastic. I bought this game and found that it was missing a few piece and wrote the company on this problem. Instead of them sending me the pieces missing they sent me a whole copy of the game. Fantastic, I don't know what to say. I wish more companies took care of their people like this.

Dean
The land game is basically the same system as Clash, with an added unit type or two. Good scenarios - if you liked Clash, you'll enjoy For Honor and Glory as well.

I have played three games of Clash and I love the game. I just discovered “For Honor and Glory”. I’m hoping someone will post a review. Yet, when I finish the Clash battles, I’m sure I will be buying this one.

Thread: Re: Naval Warfare

I have yet to play a fleet action, so I will only comment on a ship to ship engagement. I thought it played very well. You preprogram three to four moves in advance and both players move simultaneously. If you your opponent is in range, you may take a shot.
The wind can change during the battle, so you must be aware of that. Damage can slow you down. In many ways reminds me of Wings of War card play.
I liked the few one to one battles I have played and look forward to when I can try a fleet action.
I hope this helps!
ScottH.

Thread: Four Player Game?

Picked up FH&G a few days ago, great components! Looking forward to a game later this week

Wondering if this is truly a 4 player game as indicated on boardgamegeek site? I have glanced at the rules and do not see a mention of it. Is it just a mater of spliting the command points for extra players?

All the best,

Mark

After playing the sister game, Clash for for Continent, I am looking to this one. If the land battles are as well balanced and thought out as Clash's then this one will be well worth the pre-order price. The water battles will just be icing on the cake.

Looks like they may have it ready by WBC but they are definitly promising '05.
