The store I bought it from promised to send me a new copy as soon as they get more of them. Seems like all the copys they had, had the same problem. So I'll wait till I get a new copy.

The half of the game you did get should have enough cards of each type to play a two player game. Just check to make sure you have the rooms required by the quests first. Hopefully you'll get the rest soon.

Thread: Wrong cards in the box

I bought this game yesterday. When I looked through the cards I noticed something was wrong. The cards weren't wrong as in from another game or something. But the two decks of cards inside the box were the same, which means that I have duplicates of all the cards I got. It also means that after sorting out the duplicates I only have half of the cards that should be in the game.

I guess this makes my copy of the game unplayable. I e-mailed the store I bought it from, so they will probably replace it. But this was their last copy of this particular game. What a disappointment!

Yep, that's me. Nice to see K. Wilson's interests are moving in the same direction! Thanks for the tip - DESCENT does look fun, and it's more toy-ish aspect might compensate one a bit for the lack of roleplay than games like DUNGEONEER seem to.

Just finished my first game of Dungeoneer, and was hugely impressed - lovely art, imaginative design, nice flow of gameplay (one one has labored through the indecipherable rules) and loads of drama and excitement.

But I'm also a long-time fan of traditional, 1970s RPGs, and there's something about this game that strikes me as vaguely sinister.
The 2.3 version of the rules recommends separating the entrances. As portals are discovered, then they can be linked "using the tokens" to each other. Thus allowing travel between them. If in the dungeon, then only dungeon cards are used and same with outdoors.

Goodluck,
D

Thread: Re: duplicate cards

As the designer and illustrator, it's true I was finding ways to make the sets more feasible to produce, there was another good reason for duplicate monsters. It comes from the old AD&D monster encounter tables where common monsters would appear more often than rare monsters. This is simulated in the cards with duplicates of common monsters.

Thread: duplicate cards

I bought this set after I've played Tomb of the Lich Lord several times and really enjoyed it.
However, when I first opend the box expecting to find some new and exciting cards I found lots of duplicate cards in this set which was not a problem in the lich lord set.

It's understandable to have multiple life-recovering potion cards however, the numerous duplicate monsters were a little disappointing for me.

I don't want to criticise the designer too much because I think dungeoneer is a great game and I have enjoyed playing it. However, aftering enjoying the lich lord set with lots of unique cards, realm of the ice witch seems a little lacking and makes a player feel that the designer got lazy and just put copies of the same cards into the set.

A good review, thank you. It persuaded me to add Ice Witch to my Christmas list. Just one question: when this one is unwrapped on Christmas day, will the artwork provoke an "oooh" of pleasure or an "urgh" of dismay?

I've found the artwork in this series a bit variable. Very nice in Dragons... (my favourite of the series also)and Den of the Wererats but poor in Vault of the Fiends.

Dungeoneer is a strange game to get a handle on. I don't know why I like it, but I do. It's certainly not a traditional game because I don't consider its purpose to win, but to have a good time watching a story unfold. It's been ages since I RPGed, and I've really no inclination to get back into that world. But Dungeoneer is a nice RPG-lite experience that actually is a game with a very nice feel.

I feel the same way about this game. I really do enjoy, but alas only my son will play with me and rarely. I like the dungeon settings but don't have the Ice Witch one yet.

I think im gonna get this back out and have a game of it soon.

Thread: An epic adventure . . . almost

So I broke out Dungeoneer yesterday to play with my friend. I'd played it with him a week earlier, so we both understood the rules. We both like the game too. I'd just bought the Ice Witch deck and the Call of the Lich Lord deck. Lich Lord is the first Epic deck. You can combine it with the Heroic decks to have bigger threats, allow your heroes to get higher than 4th level, and have a longer game if you like.

Cusomization is easy. We picked out half of the Ice Witch deck and half of the Lich Lord deck, seperated the Glory and Peril cards into two decks. We also "stacked" the decks so these decks were sorted randomly from weak cards to powerful cards. Kind of like a RPG where you start small and work your way up in terms of hero abilities and growing danger. The idea for this game was that we would start per normal Heroic quest, then when we got powerful enough, go after the Lich Lord himself. That didn't happen. My Friend had to leave just as my Demon Slayer reached 4th level. I was declared the winner and we stopped there. Enough setup. Let's get to the game.

To begin with, neither of us had the locations for our quests on the map for the first few turns. We explored to build our Glory. Through the luck of the draw, I didn't have any permanent Boons to play and was getting my butt kicked by a shivering rat. That thing must've chased me halfway across the frozen tundra. While I didn't kill it for a long time, I did manage to hold it off while only getting two wounds. My worthy opponent faced a frozen skeleton repeatedly and repeatedly lost because the skeleton does very well on artic map cards, of which most of the Ice Witch set are. It didn't look very promising for either of us.

Then finally the Cursed Ice Shelf was revealed, and it was the Global Quest. I ran over there as fast as I could, beating my opponent to the punch. Actually, he wasn't even trying. Too busy trying to complete his Find Emmy Seach Quest. Too bad for him because I reached the Shelf, defied the Ice Queen, and rose a level finally. When that shivering rat attacked again, I took him out. Hallelujah!

My opponent was having a harder time of it. He wasn't really focusing on his quests and instead was trying to throw a lot of bad stuff my way because I'd built up a lot of Peril. While it slowed me down, it didn't stop me. I faced a few demons, but my Demon Hunter was able to keep her ground, complete another quest (to transport a frozen knight's body from the Polar Forest to the Glacier Canyon. Bingo, another level. My opponent hadn't even reached second.

I finally got a couple of good permanant Boons. One was the Artic Warrior card, which meant all that running around and fighting on the ice was finally paying off because only the most foolhardy (or magically focused) creature would dare face me on the ice now. I also got a Dark Doggy boon, which upped my Magic, so I was feeling pretty confident. Even after I was buried beneath an avalanche and besieged by demons, I held my ground and won the day.

My opponent finally completed one quest (Read the Ice Shelf) and also Found Emmy, though he didn't complete the quest until he got her home. The game had been tougher on him than me and his hero was down to three Life. Still, he pushed on.

Meanwhile, I faced my final quest (Kill the Frost Demon) and after a bit of a battle, I defeated the monster and reached 4th Level. If we'd continued, I would've unleashed the Lich Lord and set about exploring his dungeon realm. But it was late, and we called it quits.

We both had a fun time, and my friend said he'd probably buy a deck or two of his own. So I guess that's the best endorsement I can give.

Thread: 3 Adventures... all dying

Two friends came over this morning for Mimosas, French Toast, and board gaming. Sunday morning... all slow... what do we play? One friend was interested in Dungeoneer. I had just gotten the Realm of the Ice Witch (had played the Lich Lord one) and so we broke it out. Went through the rules quickly and on we went.

We wandered around the icy lands encountering Yetis, Ice Demons, and Shivering Rats.... when we realized that none of us had killed an Encounter yet. We were all getting beat on badly. We played with the optional advanced rules of "Wandering Packs" and found we liked this better than the seemingly random creature attacks from a pack.

In the end, I ended up winning, not out of skillful play or wise decisions; but rather all three of my quests were within 2 spaces from the entrance. I like Dungeoneer a lot actually; although this game was kind of boring. Could have been the mimosas or hung overness and Sunday morning though.

You can find such at least at http://www.spielmaterial.de/ in the "Miscellaneous Material" section.

If ordering from Germany seems to be far-fetched, you could also browse through these http://www.bgdf.com/modules.php?name=Web_Links&l_op=viewlink...
Thread: Another great Dungoneer set

This review does not cover the rules of the game. If you have not played before you can find the rules at the following site: http://www.atlas-games.com/dungeoneer/index.php

Overview
Each new Dungoneer set released adds new variety and expands on its predecessors and this expansion is no exception. As with all Dungoneer expansions, Realm of the Ice Witch can be played as stand alone or integrated seamlessly with the other expansions.

Realm of the Ice Witch incorporates a new “world event” mechanic with a card called Winter Spell of the Ice Witch. It has the Winterize ability which, on the start of each turn, a die is rolled and on a 4+ an ice token is placed on any site card except desert. Yes, this can even extend down into the dungeon. Any area with an ice token is now considered to have an ice icon. This card starts in play and is only removed when the Ice Witch is defeated. Most of the monsters in this expansion get an attack bonus per ice icon on a site so sometimes it’s best to stay away from that ice!

Characters
Once again 6 new characters appear in this set. Aside from two, most are medicore.

Enraka Tyvus: Half-Celestial Valkyrie. Ability: Demon Ward. Allows you to pay any # of glory up to the cost of the threat of 1 demon to return it to your opponent’s hand. Not that great. Most of the time players do not have enough glory to return a pricy card to opponent’s hand, and if they do the opponent will just discard it and draw something new.

Tahewyn Draexis: Human Frostblade. Ability: Demon Slayer. +1 attack against Demons. Nice ability if you are playing the expansion as stand alone since most of the monsters are demons, but not so great when playing with more expansions since you will face much more than just demons.

Ryghus Gar: Human Boreal Scout. Ability: Arctic Knowledge. Allows you to draw and keep 1 additional card if you end your turn on an ice space. Great ability. With the Spell of the Ice Witch most spaces will have an ice token on it so you will most likely always have an extra card. Having that one extra card can make a big difference.

Nadalia: Half-Elf Warrior-Witch. Winterize: Collect 2 threat to turn any space except desert into an ice space. Terrible. There are only a few cards in the set that you would actually want to use this ability with. With Spell of the Ice Witch in play most areas will have an ice token anyway. Her only redeeming quality is that she has +1 magic on ice which is very nice.

Onoku Kai: Human Arctic Channeler: Ability: Channel Arctic Wind. Allows you to pay any # of glory to reduce a monster's magic by the amount of glory you paid. Not only is she the best in this set, but also one of the best in any set. She can turn the toughest magic user into a wimp.

Bodones Ving: Human Warblade. Ability: Undaunted. Pay two glory to untip. Not too great. It’s nice not having to pay a movement to untip, but there have been many games we have played where no character has ever become tipped.

New Cards
Just as Dragons of the Forsaken Desert introduces scrolls to the series, Realm of the Ice Witch introduces Wards. Wards allow you to automatically destroy a certain type of monster and then collect glory equal to its life. Two of my favorite cards in this set are: Omnisus’ Favor: Allows you to re-roll one die and draw 1 card. Super card that only costs 1 glory. Bite the Hand that Feeds: Allows you to target a monster in any pack. That monster then attacks it’s owner. For only 2 peril this card is great. It will make your opponent think twice about having a beefy monster in his pack after being attacked by it.

Monsters
One complaint that my friends and I had with earlier sets was that monsters were way too easy to defeat once a character gained a couple of levels. This has been addressed in the past couple expansions with some monsters having the ability to add a characters level to their attack. This expansion address the issue even further with monsters gaining an attack bonus for each ice on the site.

As for the Cholizar the Ice Queen, she’s by far the most powerful creature in any set. When played from a pack, she automatically places an ice. She gets +2 attacks on ice, inflicts 1 wound or two wounds if on ice on melee attack, and 1 wound and opponent is tipped if on ice on magic attack. She’s also got a whopping 4 life, 3 melee, 7 magic, and 5 speed. Unless your opponents has something up their sleeve those stats are guaranteed to be at least +2 if played from the pack. Play on site with more than one ice and Ouch!! Luckily she costs 7 threat to play.

Conclusion
Overall this is another great set to add to your Dungoneer collection. If you’re not a fan of Dungoneer there’s really nothing here that’s going to change your mind, but the new world event is a nice touch. Although this set mixes seamlessly it does have a problem if you do. If Cholizar ends up being in the lower half of a 500+ card draw deck your likely never to see her. This makes the whole Winter spell a bit anticlimactic and somewhat pointless since she’s the one casting it. That’s my only gripe about the expansion, albeit a minor one and a non-issue if played as stand alone. This is my second favorite set in the Dungoneer universe. Dragons of the Forsaken Desert being my favorite.

Thread: Looking for hero figure stands

I'm not really sure what the actual name for them is... figure stands... plastic bases... whatever you want to call them. I want to be able to insert my paper heros into a plastic base rather than have them stand up like a teepee.

Does anyone know of a place that sells these things? I've spent an hour searching on the net and can't find a lead.

Thanks,
Jeff

Thread: Re: New things in this set?

Well, in this set, there's a lot of terrain changing -- the board gets progressively more icy as the game goes on, making monsters and items and boons more powerful. There's also some really tough monsters, making it more perilous (or at least dramatic) in some ways than the other sets. There are some really neat instant cards that are pretty different.

I really like the characters in this set, too -- they all seem creative and different from each other, and most of their special abilities are actually useful.

Thread: Bought Ice Witch set at Gencon SoCal!

Picked it up at the Atlas booth. The guys there were great and fun to talk to. The reprint fiends set was there too but decided not to buy it since I have the original one already.

I cracked it open today and took a good look at it. Though the first thing that hit me was 3 cards were stuck together and the art was damaged when I separated them! But emailed Atlas today (Sunday) and got an email back in 30 min saying they'd ship out replacement cards right away! Wow, what great customer service!

As for the game, I really liked the ice event card "Winter Spell of the Ice Witch". That's a cool mechanic. It's an ice effect that stays around until the Ice Witch is killed. One disapointment was there seemed to be alot of duplicate cards, even more then the other later sets. I realize Mr. Denmark can't make as much unique art as he did in the first 2 sets because of costs so this is a small complaint. The art otherwise is top notch except for the roads which were surprisingly rushed looking. They are just quick brushstrokes of white on rock. More time should have been put on them and they really stand out as poor compared to the other great art.

So, looks like a great new set. I'm really enjoying the outdoor locations. Very interested to see what is coming next.

Mr. Denmark was suppose to be at the show but didn't see him. We were only up on Saturday and basically spent our whole time at or near the dealers area so maybe his booth was elsewhere.
