I really prefer playing "lazy peon" which is only commons and uncommons, because the game is VERY balanced that way. Rares don't tip the scales TOO, too much, but they certainly make a difference.

Also.. I personally think the easiest starter decks to use are hunters and warlocks because they have both Direct Damage and pets. That's just from my experience, however.

Drums of War is a pretty darn good place to start. With that being said, I wouldn't hesitate to tell you to look for some Heroes of Azeroth (the first set) boxes for cheap online. I know wholesalegaming.com has them for relatively cheap.

At the very least, I'd get a Drums of War starter box because it comes with two playable (albeit small) decks for you to try out.

Thread: Greetings - Some Q's for players...

Hello everyone, my oldest son and myself have recently gotten into the WoW Minis game (we love it) and since he is a big fan of the online game, and also he plays Magic, he is now showing interest in the WoW Card Game.

I am wondering, which sets should I be buying for new players? Should I get some of the older sets? I know there are quite a few out now (I haven't checked here for a list or anything yet), at this point I'm curious if there are any sets I should focus on to get into the game with, etc.

Thanks all!

D.

Thread: Re: Why are "half boxes" of boosters a better value than full boxes?

My guess would be that there are a number of loot cards per box. Technically a person could open boosters until they found that many loot cards, and then leave the rest sealed. That way buyers think they may get a loot card, but in fact don't. In addition, they can combine unopened boosters from multiple boxes in this manner.

I've noticed some sellers of cards selling "half boxes" of 12 boosters. (example) Why would these 12 boosters be cheaper (per pack) than an entire sealed box of boosters? (example)

Is there some bonus that comes with the booster box itself?

Class specific definitely has better choices than Vanquish. But its useful in any deck and fits, no question asked. Not the best card or most powerful. But it goes anywhere and the price is reasonable. Its a pretty powerful card in limited format.

In general I agree with Steve. 15 quests or so is about right for a deck. Since you have a limited inventory, for the last 45 cards you'll probably be looking at about 50%/50% for allies and abilities/equipment. I'm not sure I agree with Vanquish... There is other ally hate which is more cost effective depending on the class.

Z

Thread: Re: General Deckbuilding suggestions? (rough percentages)

A good idea for quests specifically is 16. Sometimes its cool to go less especially if you are running a weenie rush deck. Never play less than 12 though.

Items are best for warrior/paladin decks as they're designed to make use of weapons and armor. Most of the items such as Mason's Freternity Ring and their ilk are just flat out useless.

As for abilities, it again depends on what you want to do. Mages and warlocks love abilities and don't like weapons/armor/items.

Vanquish is the best all around ability. Any class from either Horde or Alliance can use it so put 4 in every deck.

Allies rock and are the real meat of most decks, especially if you're playing with mostly commons and uncommons.

I hope that helped somewhat. If you have more questions, feel free to Geekmail me directly.
Thread: General Deckbuilding suggestions? (rough percentages)

I do have a 3 starter sets and a bunch of commons / uncommons that I got off Ebay. I will start with just the 31 cards that come in the starters at first but I do look forward to my first attempts at deck building.

I'm not looking to compete but to make fair decks that can be used with my game group.

Approximately what percent of each kind of card should I try to include in a deck? Of course what I actually have will be a limiting factor but I did get 750 cards in the non-start box lot so I should be able to build 4+ decks depending on what they are of course.

The way I see it these are the basics:
1) allies
2) quests
3) items and abilities

It seems that items are a bit more difficult to find. I don't believe I have many cards from the more recent sets. I think the majority are from Heroes of Azeroth and Through the Dark Portal.

For reference the starter 31 card decks that I have are: the Blood Elf Rogue from TtDP, the Dwarf Warrior from HoA, and the Dranei Shaman from TtDP.

I know that part of the strategy could be to concentrate on one of the 3 more than the other two. However, I'm just looking for rough estimates so that I can make playable decks.

Thread: Re: Question: how to protect cards

It's no more difficult to shuffle cards with sleeves than it is without.

You'll need to break them in a big though, as new sleeves can be quite slippery! I recommend shuffling the sleeves for 10-15 minutes prior to inserting the cards.

To answer your other question, just keep the cards in the sleeves and if you need to modify the deck at all, just remove the cards you don't want and insert the new cards in their place.

Hope this helps.

Two ways to shuffle:

* Deal the cards into seven decks and put them atop each other.

* Cut the deck in half and push the decks together. Plastic sleeves make it easier to "shuffle" cards this way.

...and ask this question to the game store owner, who can show you how to do it!

Penny sleeves are packs of 100 thin plastic sleeves sold for a dollar.

Dragonshield sleeves are a brand.

Another option would be to buy ultrapro sleeves. I find that these are most durable.

Visit your friendly local game store and the owner will sort you out with sleeves, or just search for game sleeves on auction sites.

Thread: If you want in cheap, may I suggest... 750 cards for under $25 delivered

OK, I bought some starters and boosters right when the game came out. It sat on the shelf, as games often do. A month ago, my son wanted to learn to play.

Mega hit.

We wanted more cards and options, and started looking.

OK, so I found a dealer on eBay.

And I LOVE the package I got and the price.

Yesterday my package arrived.

750 cards. 20 of them rares. The others are commons and uncommons from the first 3 sets. Many cards are there 4 times, but no more than that. Now, had I bought 20 boosters to get 20 rares, it would have run about $70 and I would have 380 cards beyond the rares.

I got this delivered for $22.99.

Characters, allies, abilities, quests. A little shy on items, but that's not terrible. Very nicely split between factions and classes.

I can EASILY end up with 6-10 fully workable decks from this mix.

The name is
goods-seller
who also runs the store
MTGMINTCARD

Thread: Re: Pre-Constructed Decks

They don't have preconstructed decks, which is unfortunate. What they do have are random starters that are technically unplayable as-is. They also have raid decks, currently three different decks, you don't want those.

What I would do is basically what I did, buy one or two starters. Then go to Wal-Mart, they have bundles of cards (I think 60) for $6.97, buy a couple of those. You won't get anything great, but they will get you into the games relatively cheap.

Don't go overboard, wait until you've played a few games. If at all possible play with another person's cards first to find out if you even like the game.

Thread: Re: What to buy? Newer or older boosters?

As a sort of side note, while at Gencon this year I ran across a booth that was selling boxes of 1,000 commons and uncommons (in about a 70:30 ratio, supposedly) for ten bucks. Having only owned a single starter deck up until that time, that was a ridiculously easy (and inexpensive) way to get enough cards to deckbuild to my heart's content. I was almost tempted to grab a second box just to fill out my uncommon stash a bit, but with well in excess of four copies of some cards in that box alone I didn't want to stick myself with the "MT:G common glut".

That said, having looked over the cards I'd definitely grab from the first two sets and then go from there if you feel like increasing your collection size. The newer sets have unusual mechanics like inspire, demons, and others that really cry out for synergy with other cards from the same set(s)... in other words, what Jeffk said.

I think it depends on what you want to do. If you're just playing for fun, then I'd look over the list of cards and then decide what I wanted to get. You can get a good database of cards here.

http://www.emptynestgames.com/wowdex.html

If you plan on being competitive, tournaments and such, I'd pick up packs/boxes from the latest 3 expansions. That would be Legion, Betrayers and Illidan, then just buy singles from the first three expansions. The next few big tournaments are going to be Block Constructed using only the last 3 expansions.

Ah! Looks like you're all in agreement about the Heroes of Azeroth cards. I will definently get my hand on some of them for me and my brother.

So a new idea: How about like 3 boosters from HoA, 3 from DP, 3 from MotL and 3 from Illidan. Or something similar? Would it be a good start of expanding?

Thanks for the quick and good answers!

I would definitely grab some Heroes of Azaraoth and Dark Portal boosters. The early sets have some good "staple" cards that will be useful in just about any deck. Later sets introduce some cool abilities, but some of theme will require a good level of familiarity with the game before you can really use them effectively. Add in additional sets as you become comfortable with the game.

Thread: What to buy? Newer or older boosters?

Me and my brother just bought a starters set each (I bought a March of the legions and he a Dark Portal) to start playing. But of course we wanted to expand and found it a lot cheaper on Amazon.com than in our Swedish stores.

But we really don't know what to buy. Do we "need" cards from "Heroes of Azareoth" or can we, for example, buy only cards from "Dark Portal" or should we buy like a booster from each of the four series (or 5 now?)? We were planning on order like:

-1 Dark Portal Starter box each
-3 Heroes of Azaeroth Boosters each

This is just a compilation that was pretty cheap (we have to calculate the shipping to Sweden too...). Another option we were thinking about was:

-1 big 24-booster box.

But is it fun to have that many cards from the same series, like only Dark portal?

Please help us with what would be a fun way of expanding our new game! My starter box made me an "Alliance" while my brother is "Horde", do we have to stick with this or should we have some alliance heroes and some horde heroes each?

Thanks in advance!

Unless you're a bit masochistic and/or have a LOT of disposable income I would recommend NOT going the single card route. I did some of this back in the Magic days trying to tweak decks here and there and it was by far the most expensive way I could have chosen to have more fun. I sure had fun doing it, but when I look back now and realize how much I spent (and what I could have done with all that $)... oy.

Thread: Re: Getting started on a budget?

I went through the M:TG addiction back in the 90's and spent way way too much money on it. I put the "investing in a CCG" bug to bed a long time ago, but I still enjoy PLAYING CCGs. In particular, I've been on the verge of buying a few starter decks of WoW just to be able to compete a little better with some of my friends, but I remember then that for the same price I could get a whole new game and that dissuades me.

That said, the biggest issue I have with WoW (and with other CCGs including M:TG) is that for casual players, I've found it virtually impossible to build decks that result in competitive, interesting games where each player has a chance of winning depending on the choices they make. So far the vast majority of the games of WoW I've played face-to-face have resulted in wars of attrition where one deck or the other loses because it just doesn't have the weapons to deal with a particular type of card (usually weapons).

Speaking of raid decks, I have zero knowledge about them but would definitely be interested in checking it out (virtually). Anyone interested in trying to play via Lackey (www.lackeyccg.com)?

It's worth noting that some of the later series (March of the Legion and beyond I think?) have 19 cards, vs. 15 cards in the earlier series. I also think the crafting system is pretty nifty, although quite expensive by the time you have enough to actually make something.

I've been focusing on TtDP lately because it has all those race-specific quests (like Solanian's Belongings) and abilities (like Arcane Torrent), as well as "Chipper" the dwarf.

The later two sets have better loot cards. Overall, I think the cards in the newer sets are incrementally more power-laden than the older cards. The Craft Redemption Program is much better than the old sets' silly Ninja-Pirate code cards it supplanted. And there seems to be a lot of HoA around still, and its commons and uncommons make it still worth its cost (It's a Secret to Everybody, Annihilator) if you don't have enough copies already.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I figured if the rulebook didn't mention it, then it's not allowed.

Pretty fun game actually. Simple to play but you can come up with some interesting stuff. Totally feels like playing the game with the spells being cast for your Hero.

We just had the 2 starter decks, my son got the Shaman and I got the Paladin.. how ironic huh! Cool thing is, in one of the boosters included in my set was a scratch off loot card.. of the turtle mount! It appears this card goes for around $130? That's cool, hope I'll be able to sell it to fund my gaming addiction/collection.

Anyway, yes after playing Allies and equipment and resorting the more weak allies or abilities to the resource pile, our hands sometimes dwindled. I can understand quests not being able to be played but it would seem if you pickup a card you put down as a resource, that might help you.. but it also hurts you. Anyway, good to know.. we having alot of fun. I'm not totally into the deck building thing and I think we are going to have a 30 or 40 deck limit cuz I think the game will play faster.

That's going to happen a lot too, unless you've got a deck built around lots of card drawing (mostly Mage/Priest decks).

Don't worry too much! I'm guessing if you're running out of cards, then you had allies and equipment in play? That's how a lot of decks play!

Hi. During my first play with my son today, we ran really low on cards in hand.. frequently hovering to 1 or 2 for a couple turns. It got me thinking:

Is it possible to pickup resources you've played back up into your hand as long as they are not quests? Or are those resources there for the rest of the game?

Thanks

Thread: Re: Getting started on a budget?

I had the same problem and what I did is find an ebay auction for 3 starter sets. I got them cheap, and they do include a bunch of cards. That is enough cards for 6 fairly basic decks. I think I also found an auction for a mixed lot of cards really cheap. With these we were able to build 4 pretty decent decks (2 horde, 2 alliance) and if me and my friends ever feel the need to just play a game of it we randomly grab a deck and play.

I can tell you though they will not hold their own against a raid deck. My suggestion for that is either to go the route that Dorque posted, or a mix and match between my idea above and his. The first time we played a raid deck we got destroyed, so we proxied (printed and sleeved) some rares and epics to our decks (I think we limited it to one epic and 5 rares per deck) and we actually had a decent chance then.

Thread: Re: Getting started on a budget?

Part of the Nefarious Plot to get you to buy lots of cards is the fact that a raid is simply impossible to win with only commons. Strictly speaking, you can't even play at all since the heroes themselves are Uncommons, but that's being pedantic. But if you want to have fun in the deckbuilding Commons really won't do it for you.

http://www.warcraftccg.com/forums/index.php?autocom=deckbuil...

This website has details on every card in the game. It used to have full card art so you could just print a deck, sleeve it, and be done, but that got understandably removed.

You could go through this database and print out a full set of 4 of each card with a little work. Print on cardstock and sleeve and you have the full game for the cost of ink. (It was way more expensive when they had the full card art, let me tell ya.) Then if you wanted to play in organized events you could eBay just the singles you need to build the deck you have already been playing with.

Don't the collectible BS prevent you from playing the game you want to play.
