The game was created for players to use their imagination. Since you don’t have an imagination, you spend your time criticizing people who do. How about you do something creative on own and put it on display for the world. Always looking to control other peoples and their thoughts.

Thread: Basketball is usually exciting, right?

Like most others here, I got YouCan’tCheckMe! as part of a mystery package purchase. Since there are so few basketball themed games, I thought I’d give the game a shot and see what it was like.

Let’s take a look at what you get: the game consists of two decks of cards, 150 Defense cards, 100 Offense cards and 6 special cards – two Time Out cards and four Quarter cards, a rulesheet, a shiny coin, and some scoresheets.

Gameplay is pretty straightforward. Two teams consisting of one player on each side, or two players on each side, split the two decks between them and each side, and they each take two Quarter cards and one Time Out card. The coin is flipped and the side who wins starts off the game by flipping over the top Offense card from their deck. Depending on the card played, the other team will either play the top card from their Defense desk or they will play the top card from their Offense deck. If the card played has a question mark on it, such as Hook Shot? Or Layup?, the other team plays the card from their Defense deck to show the result of the play (Score! For 2 points, or Steal, which changes control of the ball to the second team, or Missed…Offensive Rebound, where the first team gets the ball back and plays the next card from their Offensive deck). If points are scored, it is marked down on the scoresheet. If there is no question mark on the card, such as Turnover or Shot Clock Violation, the second team now has control of the ball. Whoever has control of the ball at this point plays the top card from their Offense deck, and the pattern repeats. A team may use their Time Out card once per quarter to switch the Offense decks of the teams. Also, if a team is winning by more than ten points in a quarter, they may discard one of their Quarter cards to end the quarter at that time, and this can be done up to twice a game per team.

When one side has gone through their Offense deck, the other team’s Offense deck is then used for both teams until the Offense cards have all been used. The Quarter is ended and scores are tallied up. Whoever has the highest score at the end of the quarter gets rid of one of their Quarter cards, the decks are shuffled again and split up and the team with the lower score starts the next quarter. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

The cards are decent quality and the coin is a nice weight, but the pictures aren’t that great, and lack a little of the attitude the game tries to impress on people. The rulesheet misspells lose as loose and the rules are ambiguous over if the losing of the Quarter card is only in the first Quarter, or if it continues (the assumption is that it punishes the leading team at the end of the first quarter only). Gameplay is surprisingly automatic for a sport that feeds on quick players and sudden changes in tactics. You have no control over what cards come up, and you really only have one optional action you can control, the Time Out card. The dynamic sport of Basketball has been turned into the card game equivalent of a roll-and-move game, but without the satisfaction of rolling dice. Even the much maligned Monopoly gives you some feeling of control with regards to auctions and dealmaking. At least the scoresheet has plenty of room to tally scores and even has room for an Overtime quarter if needed.

Any potential this game had was lost with the simplistic rules and gameplay that offers so little to players. Basketball isn’t my favorite sport by a long shot, but it deserves a lot better than this boring non-game.

One possible way to get more enjoyment would be to take out the violations from the Offense deck and allow the player to have a small hand of cards to play, and let the Defense deck be a communal deck, perhaps also with a small hand of cards to choose from. At least you would feel that you have some kind of control over the game.
Thread: Re: The title of this game

I think it's probably a "hipper" way of saying "you can't stop me"

I can't wait to play this game so that I'm authorized to say it (see the rules). I've been tempted to say it when playing actual basketball, but I don't wanna get sued.

Thread: The title of this game

It seems to me to be out of place for a basketball game.

I would have gone with...

You Can't Foul Me!
You Can't Block Me!
or...
You Can't Stop Me, You Can Only Hope To Contain Me!

Maybe the game was meant to be hockey themed but changed at the last minute?
