So in your example you only need to roll the dice for the WHITE numbered cities. However note that no cubes can be placed on the white lettered cities (E+F) as they are on the dark side of the Moon.

Neither city on the left side of the board will grow goods - as goods cannot grow in the dark.

Only the 3 white numbered cities on the right (sunny) side will produce this turn.

Note that the background of the numbers has no influence on this. All that matters is the side on the Moon the tile is placed.

Thread: Re: AoS - The Moon: A Review for the Connoisseur

I would tend to agree.

I think the point has to be made though, the reason why you are using a given map has to be taken into account.

If you're just playing the Netherlands as a one-off, and not with a strong intent of playing AoS heavily in the future, then I see no harm in using it as an introductory map. It is a bit simpler to deal with than the normal game, and I could see the appeal from that angle.

I would probably not want to use it for a teaching map when you are planning on playing the game more regularly in the future though, because the overall decisions and play in the Netherlands are much different than normal Age of Steam, as is the feel of the game and the turn to turn decisions. Notable things such as planning for (specific) goods growth, and careful track building, which are cornerstones of effective play on 99% of the AoS maps out there, are simply pushed into the background on the Netherlands. So it's simpler, but it's also a much different game.

Yes, some things are simplified/removed, but the game plays too differently and trains thought patterns too different from the base game to make a good teaching platform.

Thread: Re: AoS - The Moon: A Review for the Connoisseur

I largely agree with JC if we're talking about teaching maps, which is different from beginner maps. I think of beginners as people who have played a game or two, but not people who are actually learning the game for the very first time.

For a teaching map, for most folks, you want to keep the rules basic, no extras, or very minor ones, and the maps that he listed are all ones that have absolutely no differences, or hardly any difference from the basic game.

The ones I listed are ones that are extremely easy progressions from the basic rules, which anyone should be able to easily play for even their second or third game.

Edit: that said, I've introduced a large number of people to Age of Steam, and I've used a huge variety of maps to do so. The Rust Belt is standard, but I've also used Germany, Soul Train, and yes, the Moon to teach people the system. If your group is made up of hardcore gamers who like tough economic games and don't mind internalizing a lot of rules, then there is really almost no limit to what you can use. My group is probably a bit odd in that regard though, and I would not recommend taking such a cavalier approach with most people learning the game system.

I want the primary trade-offs, problems and tools the players must learn and use to be as little changed as possible from those in the Great Lakes map. I'm not keen on France, Germany or the various Steam Brother's maps as teaching maps as they are a little too different from the base game and require learning different mental tools than required in Great Lakes (finance model for France, contiguous track and costing opportunities for Germany, similar again for the Steam Brothers). Scandinavia has a similar problem combined with the the Ferry action being rather over-powered and dominating in the late game.

2 - Haven't played 2 player enough to make a real recommendation here. The print and play files like Scotland and Alpha Centauri use the basic AoS rules though, so they would probably make the most sense. Just check out the file page on the Age of Steam base game.

3 - France is a solid option here, as is the free to download Japan. Scandinavia also works, though I think the Ferry ability is a little too powerful and tends to erode the auction...but the board size is good for 3.

4 - There are a lot of good beginner maps for 4. The Rust Belt is the obvious starting spot, but beyond that you have other options like Germany (excellent for experienced players as well!), the Steam Brothers' Northeastern US map works well at that scale and experience level as well...South America by the Steam Brothers would also be good for 4 relative newbies.

The key thing to me for beginners is to keep the rules changes relatively minor so people can continue to get used to the system. All of the listed maps keep the rules simple, but add some needed variety.

Thread: AoS - The Moon: A Review for the Connoisseur

Age of Steam Expansion - The Moon: A Review for the Connoisseur

==========================================================================
Initial warning: this review, and all of the future reviews I do that are labeled "For the Connoisseur" are going to be reviews of expansions. This review assumes that you have familiarity with the base game prior to reading this, and gives my opinion on the value of the expansion for base game owners.
==========================================================================

The Moon was the first map released by French designer Alban Viard. It was initially made available in a limited edition box with Reunion Island, but it was later re-released on a single, over-sized sheet of paper with Mars on its backside. As of 2007, the map is available in the Geek Marketplace, and retails for 20 Euros, plus shipping. The size of the print run is unknown.

A Basic Summary
The Moon is designed to accommodate anywhere from 3 to 6 players, and most famously introduced the track-wrapping mechanic, which allows track to be built off one edge of the map, and then to reappear on the opposite side. The map is known for its tightness and difficulty.

Important Changes

- As referenced above, the map features wrapping. Each border hex has a number next to its edges, and these have corresponding numbers on the opposite side of the board. Players can thus build off one edge of the board and appear on the other.

- Low track allotment. Players can only build 2 pieces of track per round, or 3 with the engineer.

- Contiguous Track. The sum total of all track placed on the map must be somehow connected together. The first player to build has to begin at the centre, landing spot on the map, and subsequent players can also begin there, or off anything that first player connected to. This rule keeps players in each other's faces early and increases competition.

- Low Gravity. A new special ability which allows the player selecting it to use an opponent's link, for income, once each shipment. This rule works well on the Moon because players are forced together.

- Lack of Goods. This varies based on the rules set you're using, but it's a fair assessment in either case. In the 1st edition, each city beyond the landing port only starts with 1 good on it. This creates a severe shortage of goods, and the map is nearly cleaned off at the end of a 4 player game. The 2nd edition rules increase the allotment to 2, which should soften it up some.

- The Dark Side of the Moon. This is probably the most radical rule in practice. Each round, half of of the board's cities will be Black instead of their normal colour. The next round, the cities on the opposite side of the board are then Black, and so forth. This creates fascinating delivery choices, and it encourages players to build on the "spine" of the map, so they can take advantage of the rule for long deliveries.

Scale
The map is designed for anywhere from 3-6 players, however, I think the middle scale is the best, with 4 probably being the sweet spot. The only problem with the 3 scale is the flaccid auction, the Locomotive is still in demand, but with Urbanization and Low Gravity also present, deflation is a serious problem. 4 seems to have good competition, but the goods are normally nearly exhausted by the end of the game. 5+ would only exacerbate this problem. Now, I should state clearly, I think goods paucity is a FEATURE on this map, and I really like the fact that one has to carefully think ahead about future shipments on this map, but at the high scale we're talking actual exhaustion, which is probably a bit too harsh, even for me.

How Challenging is this map?
I think this is an extremely challenging map, for a variety of reasons. To begin with, player competition is artificially created at almost every phase of the game: players have to build next to each other, there aren't enough goods to go around, and there is a special action which allows players to steal goods from one another with extreme ease and for good profit. On top of that, the rules themselves create interesting challenges: solid networks on the Moon have to be built to take advantage of the Dark Side changes, and well-timed use of the wrapping feature can often be the difference.

Overall, I rate this map as being for experts only. Its economy is challenging, its track building decisions are tough, and one can easily end up with no viable delivery options.

Difficulty level: On a scale of 1-5 with the base game being 1, I would rate this a 5, easily.

What do I think of it?
I'm a sucker for innovation and huge changes to the AoS system, and the Moon delivers that in spades. While most of the basic lessons of good Age of Steam play still apply, the heightened competition, tricky track building, and different delivery phase all make this map stand out for me.

I really like this map, and currently rate it as my favourite Age of Steam map to date, which means it is beating out about 30 other maps, which is no small feat. In my experience, this map has a strong appeal to veteran Steam players who already have internalized the base system enough to be able to handle the monstrous helping of changes that this piles onto the system.

Should I buy it?
If you are an advanced player, then I unreservedly say, "Yes, and don't hesitate". Newer players, or those who only occasionally play Age of Steam are advised to think about it first though. If you tend to play with casual gamers, or just don't get AoS onto the table all that often this map could end up overwhelming you.

If the theme is holding you back, at all, I strongly advise you to just ignore that aspect. No, this theme is not very believable, but the gameplay here is extremely solid.

My final slant: My favourite AoS map, and highly recommended for advanced players.

Note: Though I am now associated with AoS Team, the group that put out this map, this review was written prior to that.

Thread: Age of Steam Moon session report

Age of Steam Moon is one of our favorite map. The new rules add a great challenge to an already challenging game. With Martin, Mario, Marc-Andre and Pierre around the table you could expect a very tough game. 3 or 4 players seems to best the best number of players for this map. We used a variant of our own that adds more goods on the set up since there was no goods left in the last turns in our first game. Alban had made a good work in his latest reprint when he modify his rules in adding more goods at the setup.

As we often saw in our last game Mario began the game with a high bet to win the urbanization action. Pierre started in the northeast region, Marc-Andre in the northwest, Mario in the southeast and Martin in the southwest. In the second turn Mario took 3 shares on won the bet at 2$ only and he made 2 nice deliveries of 3 income each. Marc-Andre took the last exit from the middle city but Martin had his revenge when he took an important good from Marc-Andre to deny him a big delivery. Martin continued his destructive work when he builded many small links to block Marc-Andre and Mario networks. I suppose these two had forgot that you don't do these kinds of move to Martin. The game was very close at this stage and the bets stayed very low since the players didn't want to spend too much shares and be left behind the other players. Mario had a nice network and finished a nice loop with his latest purple urbanization and that was very profitable for him. Pierre was the first to cross the map and it was also very profitable for him. Martin had a break in the middle of the game when he had the loco action twice for 0$ but it wasn't enough since there wasn't much goods left in his area in the end. In the last turn Marc-Andre and Pierre were head to head but Marc-Andre decided to take an additional share to beat Pierre on the betting round.

Finally there was a perfect tie between Marc-Andre and Pierre. Again our comments were great for this map. You need high concentration when playing on this map. The new action low gravitation was choosen several times and it was very important in the end since there wasn't many big deliveries left.

Final scoring:
Marc-Andre and Pierre: 67
Mario: 61
Martin: 42

Nice session report, I definitely suggest playing the Moon with 4 sometime, I also would not want to play with more than that, but that number seems to be the sweet spot for this map. The goods are definitely tight, though you were playing with the slightly more generous new rules...the old ones only provide 1 cube per starting city!

On a side note: the wrapping track is not that easy to use in the Moon on anything other than north/south links, so I wouldn't necessarily say that you didn't use it enough, it's just not all that easy to use.

Mars makes the wrap much more prominent by allowing players to build more pieces of track, and be starting them on the edges of the map instead of in the centre.

Definitely love the Moon though, the switching "dark side" mechanic is fantastic, and the track and goods tightness is agonizing.

Thread: Colonizing the Moon

Last night, three of us sat down to play the latest in a long line of expansion maps for Age of Steam, the Moon. What makes the map different is the use of black cities (they switch back and forth from one side to the other, depending on which half of the map is the "dark side of the moon" for that turn), and the spherical nature of the map (track wraps from one end of the board to the other). Both characteristics together made this a brand new Age of Steam experience for the three of us.

This was our initial setup of the board. (Note that the poker chips serve no purpose in the game, other than to keep the map flat.) Given the concentration of the cities on the map, paired with the rule that all track had to be able to trace back to the central hex of the map, we all were right up next to each other from the very first turn of the game. I bid high enough to go first, and urbanized a yellow city at Theophilus. This allowed me to make a 2-link delivery to Mare Nectaris after upping my locomotive.

On the second turn, we saw the usefulness of having the black cities rotate from one side of the board to the other. I chose the locomotive on that turn, and delivered a yellow good from the center hex to Mare Nubium, on the left side of the map. Making this delivery meant that I had to go through Theophilus, which I had urbanized as a yellow city on the previous turn. Of course, had the city not been on the dark side of the moon on that turn, then the good would have stopped there, for a delivery of one, but since it was now a black city, I was able to hop through it without it affecting my 3-link delivery.

By the middle of the game, we were easily in each others' kitchens, as you can see by the above picture. Blue had built directly off of red on the first turn, and blue and yellow began a competition for the lower center region of the map. The dense nature of the track on the board forced all three of us to start building through the bottom of the map, to link back on the top of the map to connect to other cities.

At this point, three of the four available new cities had been urbanized, and as you can see, all of the blue was on one side of the board, while all of the red was on the other side of the board. This created some limitations in what we could deliver, since all of the red or blue cities were turned black on their respective turns. Before the end of the game, the purple cities were all on one half of the map, as well, so purple also became a difficult good to deliver. Yellow was the only color that could possibly be delivered on each turn, but most of the yellow cubes came out toward the beginning of the game.

The above picture shows the end of our three-player game, and it was this point when Malachi mentioned that the map plays up to 6 players. Given the density of track, and the scarcity of goods by the end of the game, I'm amazed that anyone would attempt this map with that many players. The initial goods placement differs with more people, and of course, the number of turns would be fewer, but I'm not sure if I could handle the stress of that many players being in direct competition for the entire length of the game.

I think we likely made some mistakes in the way we urbanized the same colored cities on one half of the board, but I can also see a legitimate strategy in doing so, so long as the blue cubes are clustered on the opposite half of the map. I think we also may not have utilized the wrapping of the track as well as we could have, either, since it was probably past the midgame that we all started building this way (though Malachi discovered its usefulness before the rest of us did).

All in all, I like the changes to this map, and the new challenges it provides. I would be interested in playing this one again, with 4, but I don't think I want to attempt colonizing the Moon with 5 or 6 players.

Red: 73
Blue: 75
Yellow: 103

I'm sure this change will improve. We played this map several times and it's one of the best AoS expansion. Since there wasn't enough goods to ship in the last turns we had already use a variant in which we put more goods on the set up. Thanks for adding this modification in this second edition of your Moon expansion.

Thread: Minor variation between printings

Just to note:

The rules in the 1st edition are slightly more harsh.

In the initial setup, the 1st edition says to place 1 good per city, and 2 for each player at the centre.

In the 2nd edition, this is increased to 2 goods per city, and 2 for each player at the centre.

Not having played with the new rule, it is difficult to say what effect it will have on the system, but it will probably make the map scale slightly better. I do like the tight good distribution on this map when playing with only 3.

Thread: Age of Steam Moon session report

It has been a long time since our last play on this map and we were all anxious to try it again. Our last games on this map were very exciting. The new rules are very original and at the same time they kept the good feeling of the basic game. We also remembered that this map was very brain since the new rules and the map added more strategy. When p0laying Age of Steam, it's always important to plan your next turns but on the Moon map it's even more important. Since we ran out of goods in our last games on this map, we decided to use a variant in which we place more goods on the map for the setup and we also remove one turn. Martin, Marc-André, Mario and Pierre were the 4 players to raise the challenge of this map tonight.

At the beginning Mario betted high for urbanization and choose the best spot in the southeast, then Marc-Andre choose 2 exits from the starting city without connecting any city and Martin build just in front of him. Pierre was the only player to build on the western side of the map. On turn 2, Marc-Andre had to give up one of his unfinished link and Pierre took control of this link and connected 2 cities in the northeast. It was a big break for Pierre who at one time was almost locked in the west. Then Pierre was the first player to cross the map from north to south and in the same turn, he received 2 income from other players. At this time the low gravitation action became one of the strongest action since there was no more new city to urbanize. Pierre also had another break when he received two more income points from other players. With his first build action he was able to cross the map again with a cheap link. These cross maps link were very important in our last games and the same thing seemed to happen tonight. The bets during the game were not very high since we all had a tough time. The scores were very close and we didn't want to spend too many shares for the bets. The goods that could be shipped for interesting income were scarce and the first move action was use often. It's something we dont see this often in our games except for the end of the game. During the last turns of our game the low gravitation was the most powerful action as it enables a player to use a link of another player as it was one of his own link in each of his shippings. Maybe this action is even too powerful (runaway leader ?)and in a future game we may allow the use of low gravitation for one of the two shippings only. Since Marc-André was the richest player in the end he choose this action and made interesting shippings.

We didn't know who was the winner until the final scoring of the tracks and Pierre finally won the game by a close margin. Again everybody appreciated the game and it's definitly one of the favorite map in our group. As in our last plays on this map we all had a tough time in which each turn was critical. Good work Alban for this map and we look forward to play your new AoS Mars scenario.

Final scoring:
Pierre: 65
Marc-André: 63
Mario: 39
Martin: 30

Another possibility is to make the game go one turn shorter. We too ran out of resources before the end of the game making First Move the power action on the last turn.

Thread: Age of Steam Moon session report

We really had a good feeeling in our first game on the Age of Steam Moon expansion and we wanted to give ot another try this week. One of our only critic in our last game was that we didn't have enough goods to finish the game so we decided to add 1 more good at start in each city, so there was 2 goods on each city.

Set up was almost the same as our last game, the players began their game on the east side as it's easier to ship good on this side since the western cities are all black on first turn. Mario and Pierre started in the southeast and Martin in the northeast. Martin really seemed to understand really well the strategy of the night and day turns and he was able to take the lead early. Again he was the first to cross the board from the north to the south and it gave him a nice loop.

Martin won this game quite easily but we really like this expansion. With the goods we add on set up everything look to work quite well and the new rules are great. They add new dimension to an already great game. You really have to think more than usual when you plan your turns. For the real players who like Age of Steam for his deep strategy you'll have fun with Moon expansion.

Final scoring:
Martin: 115
Mario: 90
Pierre: 84

Thread: Age of Steam Moon session report

We were finally able to try the AoS moon expansion tonight. We read many reports in french website and we were anxious to try it. First look was very different that the other Aos expansions. One of the main features is that you're able to build tracks on the side of the maps and it allows you to exit on the other side of the map. There is also a new action (Low gravitation) that enables a player to ship a a good through another player's link and count the income as if it was one of your own link. On each turn half of the cities of the map are black cities and it changes every turn. When you play Age of Steam you're ready for big action but the AoS Moon expansion seemed even tougher with all these new rules.

Mario, Pierre and Marc started on the eastern side of the map and Martin was alone in the west. The first turns were very long because we had to assimilate the rules and the new concept of track building, we also had to think of the changing of color of half the cities on the map for our shipments for the next turns. Martin was the first build across the map and it paid him very soon. Mario builded a nice network with almost a loop in it. Marc Andre also had a decent start but was soon short of goods. What can we say for Pierre except that he was trying to survive even if he had a hard time trying to see 1 turn in advance. During the last turns the Low gravitation rule was choosen many times since there weren't not many goods left on the map. On the last turn players could only ship 1 good, we never had so few goods on a game of Age of Steam. Mario seemed to have a good lead over the other players but Martin had a good finish and he catched up with him in the final scoring.

We had some doubts at first about this map with all these new rules but it worked very well and it's one of the best maps we played in 2006. We had only a disapointment and that was about the scarce ressource on the map, in our next game we'll add more good on the initial set up and to correct evrything. Interaction if very good, new rules are very interesting and they all worked well. We'll definitly play this map again. Bravo Alban.

Final scoring
Mario: 45
Martin: 45
Pierre: 36
Marc-Andre: 33
