That explains a lot Thanks for clearing up one of those mysteries of life ;-)
This is indeed an underappreciated game, I did mention it yesterday to someone else but it crossed my mind that it's a very relaxing game to play. Mesmerizing even and a perfect couples game.
/dimi

Absolutely brilliant, thanks a lot Doug for the fast AND thorough reply! I am still amazed by the passion and the great responses by you guys out there :-) [do some of you have the option "notify on content" enabled?]

1. I'm ashamed to admit I missed this in the rules > I only thought it would need to join the max number of tiles possible with possibility A. But you're 101% on the spot : even with possibility B you are supposed to join the tile in 'the best possible way'.
2. Thought so! At least I got this one right ;-) Actually this would indeed be the right option for her situation : she has 3 chairs fixed on that beach, while yellow [yikes, that's me ] has only one for now.

So thanks Doug! I owe you one
/dimi

PS : She won 28 to 24 for those interested

Thread: Re: Two questions...

Oh, one clarification to question 1: if there are multiple places where the tile can be played immediately adjacent, then he must choose the one (or one of the ones) that touches the most tiles. But it always has to be immediately adjacent (and walkable). For example, if a player were on the northwestern tile in your picture, and drew a tile that could either be placed northwest or northeast, it would have to be placed northeast, since that touches two tiles.

Thread: Re: Two questions...

Here's my understanding:
1. Yes, if the tile is playable immediately adjacent to his guy (extending the island where his guy is standing) then it must be played there.
2. Brown may elect to draw another tile, but this will guarantee to end her turn. The reason to do this would be to get some chairs back into her supply, since they're worth one point each.

Thread: Two questions...

Hi there,

Two tiny questions :
1. we think we got this first question already answered but still : if a player CAN place a tile directly adjacent to the tile where his little meeple is located, he's not obliged to place it where it touches the most tiles I think [as in option 1]? As long as it joins perfectly [even with one side only], it should be fine?
2. have a look at the following image :

BROWN has moved to the 'red' tile and placed a chair there : BROWN MUST now end her turn I think?

thanks a lot!
/dimi

Thread: Re: tile-laying vs. exploration

I didn't find that tiresome. It seemed about as much effort as the endgame scoring in Carcassonne. Possibly you could keep the beach rankings updated during the game, rather than having to count everything from scratch at the end, but I didn't find this to be a big deal.

Thread: Re: Rules for bridge placement

It's four. I think those conditions are actually the same, that is, the rule should be interpreted as "if there are no positions to start from where a tile could be placed touching 3 or fewer tiles".

Thread: tile-laying vs. exploration

I don't think this is a tile-laying game at all, but really an exploration and area-majority game. It's actually quite similar in structure to Entdecker-- choose where to explore, draw a tile, if it fits you can increase your position in that area-- with an added push-your-luck element so that you can place more than one beach-chair on your turn but you lose them all if you draw a tile that doesn't fit. It can actually be a useful tactic to just keep drawing until you bust, because it allows you to remove beach-chairs from beaches where you're out of the running, and unused beach-chairs are worth points at the end. I think there's a lot going on in this game, despite an initial impression of a high luck element, but I think this may be missed by players expecting a tile-laying game.

Thread: Rules for bridge placement

We had our first game of Aloha last night and ran into a possibly unusual situation: The island that we all started out on became an actual island, fully enclosed.

Although the rules for bridge placement said that you had to only be able to move to a location where any tile placed would have to touch at least five (four?) other tiles, it seemed like 'can never move to any tile placed' ought to trigger the bridge placement as well.

Is this correct?

Josh
