The magician and apprentice draw from the same magic(mana).
And if the apprentice goes to either of the adventure cards where Fulmentus or Stonex could be used, the apprentice can use them.
Very much appreciated - I like the game and this was the only part that confused me a bit.

Thread: Magician-Apprentice Questions

Recently acquired the base game and this expansion via math trade. I understand all the rules except for the Magician's Apprentice. Can anyone assist me here?

- How does the Apprentice defeat a creature? I see other heroes can assist him, but otherwise I'm not sure. Unless I'm missing something, the Apprentice does not have any magic points of his own. Or would that mean your Magician and Magician-Apprentice draw from the same banked magic points?

- The Apprentice can apparently use any of the spells except for 'Omnus'. What does that mean? If the spell for example was Aggrediosus which allows the player to pay 1 MP to another player to take 1 power stone, does that mean you can do this spell twice (once for your magician, and then again for the magician's apprentice?)

If all the spells can be duplicated by using twice each round, it would seem to me that the Apprentice is very powerful indeed! Did I miss something in the rules that state a spell can only be used once per round?

Thread: Ignore the spells at your peril

For the next game they gave me the opportunity to choose what we'd play. We had five (Jeff had to leave, but by then Paul had showed up), and I wanted to play something I hadn't played for a long time. A few of us hadn't played before, but I still brought out Zauberschwert & Drachenei. The base game allows at most four players, so we played with the expansion, Helden & Zaubersprüche, which adds orcs that accompany some of the monsters facing the wizards and make the battles a little harder, heroes that the wizards can use to help them in their battles, additional spells, and most importantly, an allowance for a fifth player.

At the outset you could see at least two different opening gambits. Paul, Jim and Dave had made the decision to exercise the expansion, and pursued heroes, while Danielle and Alice instead seemed to focus on the spells. Danielle gained the two that gave her increased bonuses when visiting the magical sites. Alice, on the other hand, paid for the spells that simply gave her extra magic points. In both cases, the spells came early enough that they were able to make good use of them. Jim and Paul fought for the elf hero, and Paul eventually hired him, while Dave got a warrior early, and Jim eventually got the thief. The initial monster battles were focused on earning artifacts, which often meant that there was little cooperation amongst the wizards. For the most part, the rewards being offered were "power stones AND artifacts" for solo wizards, but if some teamed up against a monster, the rewards only included power stones. And that set a trend, because throughout the game there was very little cooperation in battles.

Danielle claimed the lead early in the game based on her spells and an early Holy Shrine magic site, which let her take out a monster, with an orc, on her own. Jim and Dave both followed suit shortly thereafter, but it ended up being a bigger hit to their magic points, and it took them longer to recover. Meanwhile, Alice was continually picking up magic points, and then taking out monsters. Dave claimed the Omnus spell, which let him use all of his artifacts after one battle, which he decided to save for later. He ended up using it very close to the end, which earned him 11 power stones and a five magic points, but he still didn't have enough to fight successfully in the last round, which hurt his chances for the win. At the end, Danielle simply scored a bunch of points from defeating monsters. Alice also added points from the Black Dragon Eggs, which are artifacts added in the expansion that score power stones in larger and larger quantities the more black dragon eggs you have. Paul and Jim both scored with spells that offered bonuses based on the artifacts you had in hand. But in the end it turned out to be a competition between Alice and Danielle, and Alice one by one point, 48 to 47.

Playing this with the expansion may have been a bit too much for players new to the game, but I think it went pretty well. Of course, I wasn't too successful. I think some of us (the guys, as it turns out) underestimated the power of some of the spells. Obviously the earlier you get these helpers, the bigger the payoff, but I think there just may be more opportunities for spells to help then there are for the heroes.

Thread: A first playing of the expansion

This came out today at lunch time, with three of us playing. We all started pretty slowly, with Ed and I focussed on collecting artifact cards. Carrie tended to focus more on collecting spells, and she was able to make good use of the spell that augments the Holy Place adventure. I was able to collect a lot of artifact cards early, which was a mixed blessing. I did ultimately collect four black dragon eggs, and a bunch of other single card artifacts, but I ended up with two staff-1 cards and two amulet-2 cards, and due to the card mix, was never able to trade in order to complete a set.

Through the course of the game I found that there wasn't a whole lot of competition for the adventures. Generally speaking, the decisions were more like "What adventure can I afford to let go by the wayside?" I decided that those would be the spells. I did get the thief, and was able to use it to steal one whole magic point. Carrie had similar success with the magician assistant, using it on only one turn to collect a spell. I think that was an artifact of the luck of the landscape card draw. We did have to shuffle and reuse the cards, but only went one or two cards into the refreshed deck. Carrie had better luck with her elf, as did Ed with his dwarf. They were able to collect magic points, and use them as well to defeat creatures.

I found the addition of the orcs to be an interesting plus to the game. It both increased the requirements to defeat the creatures, and boosted the rewards as well. It was felt most noticeably in the endgame. First, having three additional dragons at the end (the "D" cards) will require a bit more magic point planning. But we also had those last three dragons with orc henchmen, and that meant that in the final round, only Ed was able to target and defeat a dragon.

As it turned out, we all went with very different strategies. I was heavy in artifacts, which really didn't pan out all that much, except at the end. I had collected 4 black dragon eggs, which netted me 14 power stones. Carrie also had 3, for 9. Ed never saw any. Carrie focused more on spells, but did use them to pick off creatures when she could, while I never got a spell all game. But with everything going on, we can consider this game one data point in favor of the "but it's all pretty well balanced" viewpoint. The final scores were 52 for Carrie, and Ed and I tied with 51.

I found the game enjoyable in that it lasted a touch longer than without the expansion, which for me was good, as at times the game could feel like it was ending a bit too quickly. I suspect my comment above about having little competition would change with four or five players. This is something I definitely want to try again.
