Is Company of Knights somewhat ridiculous? Yes. Did I buy it anyway? Yes.

Why? I don't really know. I was overcome in a weak moment. Still, I know that I'll never paint my miniatures, so it's nice to have those. And I happen to have a soft spot for Bedivere in my love of Arthurian lore. So it's kind of a personal thing, I guess.

Has the lack of a die or reference sheet caused any problems at all when playing the game? No, not at all. The printed sheet and borrowing an unused die has been fine.

Have I gotten $20 worth of fun out of it? No, probably not. But I always figure once my kids get a bit older, *then* I'll get my money's worth. Well, the argument worked on the Mrs. the first couple times.

No, what I am saying is that the company of knights already included a painted bedivere. So all 8 knights are already available in a painted version and in this set. If they releeased a 2nd set, it would only have Merlin, and the quest trophies.

They've now released Bedivere in unpainted plastic, so... we no longer have all the knights in full color. It would be unlike the first set to release just one more, hence the suggestions for colorizing all the pieces that haven't been colorized yet, perhaps including any new pieces that might be in the second expansion.

The reshuffling of special cards is a big problem with large numbers of players. I've found that when playing with 6-8 it's a good idea to remove the special cards from the game entirely when they are played.

Thread: Re: The Shadow Expansion. (Is it really an expansion at all?)

I got this expansion some time ago, but I guess I researhed it a bit more beforehand. I knew it was really only painted figures, including the slightly harder to get 8th knight, so I wasn't disappointed with what I got since I knew that's all I would get.

Now as far as wishes go, it would have been to nice to get a Sir Bedivere character card and corresponding life die of the same type that came for the other characters in the game. The die especially, just because I haven't found an orange third-party die that matches the style of the others. For now, I just use one of the other dies that aren't being used when I play. The player card pdf is available on the DoW website, so I just bought some fairly heavy doublesided photo paper and printed it off using high quality on my printer. It came out really nice, though I had to "Press" it between some books to keep it from warping as it dried. Though it's slightly slimmer than the cards that came with the game, it's close enought that you really have to look to tell it apart from the others.

As far as the extra traitor card goes, the game is still meant for only up to seven players. With the eighth knight, you just get more choices for which knights are playing. My group has found that the upper end of players playing (6 or 7) makes it really difficult for the traitor (if there is one) to get a fair shot at winning. Eight players would likely obliterate the traitor's chances.

It is an expansion in the simplest sense that an expansion just means that you need the base game in order to use whatever it is.

However, just FYI, I believe the rules were such that you could still only play with 7 people, you just had more choices of who to be. Not that you "couldn't" play it with 8, I suppose.

Great review for such a simple expansion to a game. As expansions go, I agree this one deserves the average rating you give it. If you got the Sir Bedivere Game Trade magazine figure (or they were giving them away at Essen 06 by the bunches) you really don't need this one unless you want a set of painted figures for the game.

BTW I agree that this is an expansion.

Thread: Re: The Shadow Expansion. (Is it really an expansion at all?)

It's not an expansion. It's not sold as an expansion. It's a set of 8 painted knights.

I don't really want to get into this debate. Especially as I mostly agree with you. It was the extra knight and the relative cheap price that sold it to me, and I don't feel slighted by what I got from the deal. Especially as I treasure my ability to make impulse buys!

However, if you look at their website, they do sell it as an expansion:
http://www.shadowsovercamelot.com/?rid=&S=efe986ef651d1fdd97...
(look at the bottom right)

And from the back of the box:
"A Company of Knights is an expansion for Shadows over Camelot (TM), not a stand-alone game."

Either way, I'm happy with it. I feel they could have (should have?) done more with it, and added those tools so that the new character could be used out of the box. But a quick print and any 6 sided-die will do. And those rare situations where I get together with 8 people I'll use playing cards instead of loyalty cards.

Thread: The Shadow Expansion. (Is it really an expansion at all?)

When I discovered this expansion, I really didn't intend to purchase it. Especially as it was retailing somewhere in the $35-40 CAN mark. In truth I still wish I had researched it a little more before I did. But seeing it for almost half that amount ($19.95 Woot!), and gaining an extra knight convinced me to implement a quick impulse-buy.

Now there are all sorts of arguments already present on this site whether this is a proper expansion at all. It's a valid question as although there is one extra knight, there are no rules provided to guide our use of him. In fact, besides the painted knights, there is nothing else in the box. Not even a link to where you can find the character card so you can print it off yourself! However, he does have his own special abilities, and it does add an extra player.

It may not be an Expansion, but maybe just an expansion.

Bits:
The figures themselves are made of good quality soft plastic. They are painted, and while the colours are appropriate, they are not as painstakingly painted as the box suggests. Our Sir Kay stares at us with a frighteningly bug-eyed gaze. However, compared to the non-painted figures, it does add to the appearance of the board. Oh, and I like Sir Bedivere's horns, makes it even more entertaining when he turns out to be the traitor.

Lacking from the package are the character card, health die, and an extra loyalty card. These 'oversights' are totally unforgivable in my mind. They are required to play the game with 8 players, or to play with Sir Bedivere at all.

As a way to make up for it, they have provided the card online and it is very easy to find. Here it is on the official site:
http://www.shadowsovercamelot.com/index.php/?t=content&sub=r...

Other additions that also would have been welcome (especially for the price) would be painted artifacts, painted siege engines, and extra white and black cards to provide for the extra player.

Rules:
No changes except for the addition of an extra knight with his own special ability. Once a round Sir Bedivere can discard one white card and replace it with the top card from the white deck.

As a loyal knight this is a strong ability, allowing you to deplete the deck quickly if you like, as well you may be able to stay at a specific quest for longer by drawing appropriate cards.

However, as a traitor it may even be more powerful as you can discard helpful cards in trade for less useful ones. Unless everyone is hypervigilant and paying attention to what special whites have been played, it is near impossible to catch.

No rules have been offered to say whether you need 9 loyalty cards for the 8 characters, but I would assume so. It would be disappointing to be sure that there is a traitor in your midst, rather than just a high likelihood.

Summary:
In the end, I don't mind this expansion. It does allow for one more player, and Sir Bedivere's talents are welcomed as a fellow knight (and feared as a foe). The painted knights are a nice, though imperfect, addition. I'm sure they could have packaged more into the expansion for the price though, as the lack of character card, die, and loyalty card are sorely missed.

Price: D . Too much for what you gain.
Style: B- . Nice colour, better paintjob would be nice.
Completeness: D . Many other components should have been provided.
Expansion: B+ . I really enjoy the addition of Sir Bedivere, and more players for this great game always adds to the fun.

Overall C . If you must have the "complete" set, then this expansion is forgivable. Probably not worth the price though for how little it adds.
We are talking about the box of minis because the topic is "Does this really belong in the database?" and within this topic, isn't trivial. If the topic had been about rockets or children being blown we maybe have been talking about rockets and childrens.

I have no problem with this box, but the thread is to write opinions, and I write mine. Some of us thinks that this box maybe shouldn't be here because it is only miniatures, without any new rules or modifications to the game, and the new miniature have already his own entry.

Scherzo

Wow, Joe, did someone touch YOU in an inappropriate way? You seem to have flown right off the handle there.

My picture of my cat sitting on my game boxes may not be the most relevant in the database, but it WAS approved by the Geek community through GeekMod. I submitted it on a whim, anyway.

As for the Knatsch expansion, I checked with one of the admins before submitting it, the other Knatsch expansions, and the Paris Paris expansion, all found in the Abacus catalogs. I received the green light from them; I don't know what else to tell you.

The only point I was trying to make is why a group of miniatures received its own entry on the Geek. Yes, there are less useful entries on the Geek, but this was the one that happened to jump out at me at the time.

Otherwise, I just don't get you, man.

The expansion is Sir Bedivere, which has his own game entry:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/20857
And nobody was suggesting to remove that entry.

Less relevant BGG entry? It was a nice litte game years ago, when i didn't know better ones.

The i realized that you're speaking of images mostly.

Yes, there are many crappy images on the geek. When i imagemod, i vote to reject more of them than the average moderator.

What we were talking about was: is this a game that needs an extra entry in the game database, or should it just be considered part of the game SoC?

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/23103
It is an expansion to a game. It's a child game, not designed for adults, but it's still a board game. And on our gaming weekend this was one of the most played games (mostly played by adults as a light filler). It's just that from the 80+ people that were there, only 2 note their games played on the geek.

But it still gets played often in our gaming club, and it's part of the Kinder testen Spiele program, so i think more people will use this entry in the future.

Now, DoW releases a product that many people have found value and use in; and the above listed items are of more value to the Geek than A Company of Knights?
It's no question that the pictures of this knights got many recommendations. Nobody wants them to be removed from the database. The question was only:
Is this a game that should have an own entry in the game list, or should it be combined with Shadows over Camelot?
That's all we were discussing.

How hard would it be? Well, it could be pretty hard. DoW doesn't produce their own components. If they signed a contract with a manufacturing plant for 20,000 dice in each of 7 colors, they can't just say 'we need an 8th color.' They have to negotiate and sign a new contract, and they may have to pay much more because it's a smaller print run.
I do agree with you that the lack of support for Sir Bedivere is disappointing, but it's hard to say 'ridiculous' unless you really understand their supply chain.

>If Sir Bedevere was listed in the database as an expansion, I might >agree with your assessment, but I don't think he is.

He is. Sir Bevedere has his own entry on BGG in http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/20857

So I think that one of those entries should be eliminated of BGG. Why? Because Sir Bevedere might be an expansion, certainly it doesn't need two entries on BGG, because the set of plastic miniatures painted can be lovely, cool or beautiful but it certainly isn't any expansion that changes the game. It is the same game but you don't need to paint the miniatures.

José Luis Villarig

If anything, people tended to have only a few cards in their hands, because more players made it more likely that they could find a way to assist someone with the cards they had.
Admittedly, the game could use about 10 more white cards - but that's got nothing to do with the 8-player game. And if people are constantly reshuffling the black deck, that just makes Lancelot's Armor and Sir Percival less useful, and lets powerful cards like Mists of Avalon, Morgana, and Vivien turn up again, and again, and again.

I think this product is great since Shadows is such a beautifully produced game its nice to have fully painted figures.

The main issue I have is no player card for Sir Bedevere which seems extremely strange. For players that are Internet challenged and bought this in the store they'd have no idea what to do with him. If you are going to add a new figure, he should come with everything necessary to play him. Alot of boardgame players don't hang out on gaming sites or company websites.

It would have been nice if it included all the plastic figures painted. Granted that would make it more expensive. But I suppose it makes the knights stand out so not a bad thing.

I certainly wish more companies would do this. Those of us that like beautiful components would spent extra to get these things so it would keep the base game at a more player friendly cost.

Plus with Isaac's complaint, having the Bedevere card would make it technically an expansion. Currently I have to agree this should not be considered an expansion to the game.

Thread: What else is included except for the miniatures?

Does this contain a new character card with a special power, so that Sir Bedeviere can actually be used in the game?

Is there a sticker or something to make a seat for him at the round table?

Is an eigth "loyal" card included?

Thread: Re: Does this really belong in the database?

Hmm...I see your point, Isaac, but I think that if DoW is calling it an expansion, then it deserves its own entry.

Articles such as this one can debate the quality of that expansion. but if it is titled an expansion then I think it's unfair to pass judgment and move it or delete it. There are plenty of entries in all categories of this site that I think should be removed; the fact that I can't do so is ultimately a good thing. One man's trash is another man's treasure, no?

Personally, I feel this is NOT a proper expansion, but I will say that I probably would have been a lot longer in knowing about this product, and I am tempted to buy. Useful information, even if not appropriately labeled. I say keep it here.

This is by far the wosrt thing DOW could have done... they should have added more knights if they were going to do this. As it stands this doesnt seem worth purchasing to me.
