Thread: Compatible with 4th edition?

I'm about to buy Catan 4th edition and I'm considering also buying this and the Fishermen of Catan mini-expansions. They were made for the third edition, but are they compatible with the fourth?

Thanks in advance!

-spinoza scholar

Thread: The Great River:Review in Portuguese(Critica Em Português)

Comprem, vale a pena.

13 de 20.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/20247

Thread: Re: First Impressions of The Great River

I agree with most of the points brought up here, however in the one game we played with all seasoned catan players, only two people estimated it was worth staking claims to the great river.

While it's true if one person left uncontrolled to build on it may have a large advantage, as long as there is one other person competing for spots on it they can't really run away with it.

We were playing with seafaring (including 2 gold tiles), cities & knights, the event cards, the fisherman expansion as well as the great river, on a very large board with many good starting locations, but one player tried to monopolize the great river tile by placing both their starting locations on it, but this person did not win.

Thus, while this expansion adds a potential 8 victory points to someone who builds every possible settlement/city and road around every side of the great river, in a large game with many other sources of victory points, this is not the end all be all.

Salt-Man Z wrote:
If I recall correctly, it was a free giveaway, so there shouldn't be any legal issues with posting a high-res scan. Should there?

In the USA, and most countries with similar copyright systems, just because someone gives their work away doesn't give you the right to give away copies. Maybe they have value in rarity. Or maybe they help sell copies of the magazine.

That said, I happen to disagree with the popular modern implementation of copyright in most ways, so I have no personal problem with this image. I happen to like the artwork, and might print it up as an alternative to the english copy that I purchased (for $3 new). I am also going to upload a scan of the english version, for anyone who feels the same in the other direction.

PS: I know someone has already uploaded the english version, but they kept the shrink wrap on and scanned it crooked.

Thread: Re: Is where this piece goes "set?"

I take it to mean that it can be placed anywhere, as long as *at least* those two hex sides touch the ocean. That gives it 18 possible placements (on top of a full map. which is to say, 3 different ways a map can be built around it). The swamp can go along any of the 12 island edge hexes, with two possible orientations for each corner hex and one for each mid-edge hex.

Thread: Is where this piece goes "set?"

I have recently picked up this cheap little addition for my Settlers game. My directions say, "Place the river tile so the 2 water hexsides are on the islands edge (by sea hexes)."

By my interpretation this means that this tile could be places on of three (six) places. Right in the middle (and reversed) and to the right of that (and reversed) and on the edge (and reversed)

Yet, in the few photos this game has it is in the same place (one to the rightof the middle)

Do those of you who use this always put it in the same place? and if so, why?

Josh

Elasund is not worthwhile because why? It says Catan on it?

Anyway, I thought I'd point out that the Great River is a nice add-on, mechanics-wise, but it doesn't quite fit with the American edition; it seems to be the same size as the German original, which leaves it slightly too small for the American version. Unfortunate, but playable.

Hunter

I tested it with my mayfair copy and sure enough it's fractionally too small..
One solution might be to place regular tiles where the river is going to be, and place the river across the top.
Yes, that does get things off to a bad start when it doesn't even fit in with the tiles it's supposed to replace. I also agree with you that it isn't an earth-shattering expansion by any means. But for $4, it's worth adding to your game if you can get it. I've played five games with it and it does add another way to get 2 or 3 victory points for the player(s) who decide to pursue it. In my games, usually only 2 players get into a position to really get a chance at those 2 or 3 points.

If you're looking for expansions that come in magazines, try the Fishermen of Catan which is much better and adds a lot to the game. In fact, we play with both the Great River and the Fishermen now.

I first heard about this expansion from BGG. "Hey," I thought, "a quick and cheap expansion for Settlers? Nice."

It was hard to get. My local store only had non-wrapped copies of Games Quarterly. I did get a copy from a store in another city when I went there on a quick family vacation. The magazine itself was of reasonable quality.

My first impression was one of impatience. We wouldn't have had time to game on the trip, so we only brought Bohnanza. (Being quick and 2 player.) So, the river sat there, taunting me, laughing at me for not being able to play SoC: tGR.

Eventually, we got home and had a chance to play. I punched it out, started setting up the... hey, what the heck is going on here?

The stupid thing is the wrong size. That's right, IT DOES NOT FIT Settlers of Catan. How could that get through quality control? You'd think that would be at least on the top ten things to check: Is this triple tile the same size as the other tiles? If it had just been a static sticker, it would have been a better expansion: "Set up so that there is a mountain in the middle, a brick adjacent, then the desert tile. Place this cheap plastic river on top of the three tiles."

When I suggest that your expansion could be improved by replacing it with a window cling, you have serious issues.

We can read the rules quite clearly on the scans, so they aren't worth going over. You get gold for building near the river. Trade gold for VPs. Go to 12 instead of 10. That's it.

It's really not worth the hype. Maybe if it had fit, it would be worth using again. The size just shows that it was a half-made hack that wasn't thought through. I've played one game with the river. Maybe if I played more Settlers, I'd be more interested. As it is, I don't think it really adds a lot to the gameplay other than encouraging players to build out to a resourceless point in the middle of nowhere.

And maybe in a world where people have suggested - and seriously - a version of Settlers with nuclear weapons, a change of pace every now and then is a good idea.

Thread: First Impressions of The Great River
To begin, I'm unsure whether this expansion should be called The Great River of Catan, or rather The Pretty Good River of Catan. Furthermore, I will not be discussing the mechanics of using this expansion, that has been covered elsewhere. Instead, I will offer my first impressions and opinions only.

I had been anxiously checking the mail for several days, awaiting my copy of Games Quarterly. I was pleased to see that while the game had been stuffed in my mailbox, the cardboard add-on was not bent or damaged. But, I'm sure you don't care about my anxieties.

Setup
When we set up the river, we noticed that since it was cut as 3 hexes as 1 die-cut tile, it was a tight fit. The hexes around the river never did quite fit the way 3 normal tiles would (see Image). In the end, we just had to accept that roads were falling into the small gaps left between the pieces.

Starting
As Settlers of Catan players know, games are often won or lost by the starting locations you choose. Since we were trying the new expansion, we each rushed to stake our claim on the river spots with at least one of our starting settlements. As my fellow players mused afterwards, the opportunity to score extra victory points was distracting to the main purpose of getting good resources with decent values on them (My wife still maintains this is why she lost).

The Play
As the game progressed, we each branched off in our own directions in order to aquire more resources (since we all started with Brick and Iron. This game played very slow due to the fact that there was no wheat adjacent to the river, so expansion was harder than usual. The river was more-or-less forgotten, and only became usefull to snag a few extra victory points. But, since we each started on the river, we each shared the same number of victory points for most of the game. The river then became a place to build roads to nowhere as we each tried to get a couple of extra gold points where possible.

In Conclusion
We all started from the river, and we all scored either 1 or 2 victory points due to the gold. Since the game was won by a score of 12 - 7 - 6, the river seemed to have little impact. However, this was being played by a very casual group of gamers with a varying skill level. I can see a situation arising where NOT staking a claim on the river to be very detrimental. If 1 player is allowed to monopolize the river, it could be a game winning situation, easily scoring many victory points. So, as soon as 1 player stakes a claim on the river, it seems to be necessary for all players to stake their claim if they want to remain competitive. I'm sure there are those of you who will disagree with my alaysis, and I would welcome further discussion.

So, is it a great expansion? No, not really, in my opinion. It does add some variety to the basic formula. It is a nice way to add some new possibilites when playing the basic game. I think it would add some unecessary complication to Knight and Cities. Is it a great pack-in to be given away in a magazine? Absolutely. For $7 CAD, you can't lose.

hmm, in my game group, we use this expansion with Fisherman of Catan and stcik the winning condition to 10 VP. It creates far more tense game since every one is closed to winning in the end.

Thread: Three players give it a try

Last night, after much debate about what to play, my girlfriend Jacquie, my friend Logan and I decided to give the new Great River of Catan expansion a try. I just bought this a few days ago, so this is actually kind of odd that it's hitting the table so soon.

We took out the desert, a mountain and a hill, and then shuffled up the deck of land tiles and created a random setup (a setup that put all three mountains on 2, 3 and 4 rolls ). As I set up the water, I suddenly realized the slight production fault with the Great River tile piece. It's slightly smaller than the standard Mayfair pieces. While it was a little annoying, it wasn't that big of a deal. It just meant everything didn't quite fit together perfectly.

We started off playing. I positioned a settlement not far from the Great River mountain hex. Jacquie positioned a settlement closer to the swamp. Logan was the only person to actually position a settlement where he could gain a couple of gold points (GPs) immediately. While I at first thought this would give him an advantage, I was proven wrong later in the game. Simply put, he came in last.

With the Great River expansion, the needed victory points (VPs) to win is increased from ten to twelve. This made sense at first because of the extra ways to gain VPs, but as we started to come close to the endgame, VP progression slowed down considerably. While part of this obviously had to do with the rarity of ore, the number of VPs gained by building roads and settlements on the river hexes didn't seem to speed the game up at all. In fact, quite the opposite. I spent at least three or four turns sitting at ten VPs before I was able to get an eleventh. My twelfth took a few more turns to get.

By the time it was finished, we were all just happy the game was over. While the Great River of Catan expansion has some good ideas, it just didn't work for us. I should probably note I haven't been impressed with Catan expansions to date (I've played the 5-6 Player Expansion, Cities & Knights of Catan and Fisherman of Catan).

The final VP tally was:

Chris - 12
Jacquie - 10
Logan - 9

It was a fairly close game. Logan has the least experience with Settlers of Catan of the three of us, so perhaps if he had had more plays under his belt, he would've been able to better make use of his river settlement. But perhaps not.

I don't think we're going to bust out Great River of Catan again any time soon. While Settlers of Catan is far from my favourite game, I think I much prefer it without expansions.

Chris
Thread: Review - The Big River

The Big River (Der Große Fluss) is a scenario for The Settlers of Cantan (Die Siedler von Catan) and its' extensions. The scenario was a free giveaway during the Spiel 2005 in Essen. If you live in Europe, another way of obtaining a copy freely, was by ordering something else from Catan Shop (They put it on top of any order, as long as supply lasted).
The scenario consists of three connected hexagons, replacing three tiles from the original game: The Big River springs from the mountains, runs through the hills, branches out in the swamp as a Delta and finally reaches the sea. As the river is rich in gold players want to build as many streets and settlements on the river banks. Ultimately, the collected gold helps scoring additional victory points.

Game preparation
Place the expansion with its' delta adjacent to the sea (edge of frame). Remove the following tiles from the base game: 1 mountain, 1 brick and the desert and put them back into the game box. The remaining tiles are used to setup the game regularly. However, instead of placing a number, the swamp field is the starting field in which the robbers start. No settlement max be founded adjacent to the swamp during the Gründungs phase.

The Game
The regular rules apply. Additionally, each road built on a river tile as well as each settlement and city built on an intersection with a river tile receives one gold point. A settlement or a city at the placed on the very end of the Delta (where the gold nugget is located) receives two gold points. Each player receives one victory point for every three gold points. To win the game, 12 victory points are required.

Seafarers
In addition, a ship adjacing the delta receives one gold point, as long as it is not moved. If a player loses one gold point by moving the ship, this may also cause the loss of the corresponding victory point. To win the game, an additional 2 victory points are required.

Cities and Knights
Knights on intersections at the river tiles do not earn a gold point. Otherwise, the Seafarer rules apply also to streets, if the "Diplomat" is in play. To win the game, an additional 2 victory points are required.

Der grosse Fluss is a neat addition to the rich Catan universe. It does not add something spectatcular. Nor does it change gameplay substantially. It moves the desert to the border and makes it more attractive to build a settlement there. I could live without owning this extension. Only if you are a hardcore Catan collector you should hurry and order something from Catan Shop or look for a copy on ebay.
The main purpose of this scenario unfolds if you have a friend who is a die-hard Catan-fan. If he does not own this, The Big River scenario is a nice small christmas or birthday present. Something which nicely adds to a major present and makes the unwrapping process more exciting for any Catan fan...

(Originally posted on http://www.naturelich.com/games/archives/2005/11/die_siedler...)

The Mayfair rules say that items built "on the edge/corner of a river hex" are worth 1 GP. But it also refers to each terrain type as its own hex, so I take that to mean that yes, you get 1 GP for building a road across the river.

(The 3-tile version in the Atlantis set functions this way as well.)

Thread: It is in the Atlantis expansion

I just got my copy of the Atlantis expansion pack for Die Sidler von Catan. Der Grosse Fluss is included in the various materials within the box. A copy of Ereignisse auf Catan is also included. (Although it has the known numbering problem.)

The copy of Der Grosse Fluss is printed on the backside of three other tiles, making this a tiny bit different than the single triple tile that was given away at Essen. But it answers my open question of whether the rules allows one to build a road across the river. (Yes)

Anyway this is probably the simplest way for non-Europeans to get ahold of Der Grosse Fluss and Erignisse auf Catan.

Cheers,

Kevin Whitmore

Thread: Re: So what are the ACTUAL rules?

The card containing the tile also contains 8 flags for 8 victory points. Since the rules require 3 gold for each victory point, this means that the flags cater for a maximum of 24 gold. On that basis I would interpret the rules as follows:

At most 7 settlements can be built, one of which (on the gold nugget) is worth 2 gold, making a total of 8 gold from settlements. There are 14 sides to the tile plus 2 places between the hexes (across the river) where roads could be built giving a total of 16 roads for 16 gold. This gives a total of 24 gold which matches exactly to the 8 victory flags.

My German is pretty much non-existant but this seems to make sense to me. Hopefully it also does to you.

I would recommend, though, if you use the Mayfair edition, that you use an image editor to redden the central (hills) hex of the Fluss tile -- it prints out quite yellowish and looks rather like a wheat field otherwise.

after nearly 2 years, Catan Shop still does not ship to US.

best bet is to get to know some of the online players from Germany and then ask them to order it for you and ship it. PayPay, patience and being a decent person all help in this.

--JP

Thread: Re: So what are the ACTUAL rules?

By my reading of the German, each road at the edge of a river space gets one gold point. In addition each settlement on a corner by the river gets one gold point. (Cities also, but they don't get two gold points.) A settlement or city errected at the gold nugget is worth 2 gold points.

For every 3 gold points on the board, you can claim a victory point chip. I see nothing about limiting a player to only 3 victory points from gold.

It is less clear if one can lay a road across the river. I'd guess so, but the rules seem silent on this.

"Jede Straße an der Kante eines Flussfeldes und jede Siedlung oder Stadt auf der Kreuzung eines Flussfeldes ist 1 Goldpunkt wert."

"an der Kante" refers to the edge, What I am unsure of is if they mean the edge of the TILE or the edges of the three spaces. Since this is the first time we've ever seen more than one playing space on a tile, I am unsure how to interpret the German instruction.

Kevin Whitmore

Thread: Re: So what are the ACTUAL rules?

I haven't got the rules, but looking at the tile, there are only nine Gold tokens. In this light I'd go for:

1 per community (Settlement or City) adjoining the Hex (maximum of 7 Gold) plus one per bridge across the river (maximum of 2 Gold) total Tokens: 9

Alternatively, I guess you could make your own rules and combine it with Fishermen and make the River a source of Fish. If you harvest a resource from a river hex you get the option of the relevant resource or a draw from the Fish cup.

I'll answer my own question, I guess.

The first hex is mountains, the second is hills, and the last hex is swamp, which functions as the desert.

There.

So far, two people have translated the rules for this tile, but they don't quite agree.

One says that roads that CROSS the river and buildings on the edge of said crossings earn a goldpoint.

The other translation says that EVERY road, settlement, or city builty anywhere on the hex is worth a goldpoint.

Which one is it?
