Ok, I fired up my old fileserver and I found my backup of all the card images and the rules. I will post the rules here, but I have to find a place to host the images as they are 300DPI TIFFs that I designed to be print quality. The bad part is that they are about 14MB each in size. I think I have a host site I can serve them off of, but I'll update that as soon as I know.

I'm working on it... I did it two years ago and I've reformatted my home system since then. I can remember all the rules, so I'd just have to type them back out but I'd have to scan in the card designs. I put a post in the SJG forums where I originally put it out at and see if any of those guys still have a copy.

ced1106 wrote:
With the base game, I just use my ccg counters, rather than cutting anything out from the card sheet. IIRC, We also found out that having one health was *not* a good idea. Someone rolled a "1" when taking damage and took 60+ hits...

Actually, one of my favorite builds is a 1/3/3. Fast, two attacks, and with most player's favoite weapon being a rocket launcher, even with 2 health it is extremely hard to stay alive. So if you have one dice, the object is to run up, hit, hit, run to cover. Add a speed boost and you're a nightmare. It's a lot more fun than a 4/2/1 tank that constantly rolls a 1 for speed...

Also, I don't mind the dice math. Dropping the remainder makes it actually pretty simple.

Thread: Homebrew expansion for Frag

A couple years ago, I wrote an expansion for Frag. Steve Jackson said they didn't take submissions for expansions but I did ask if it was acceptable to make it available for free if anyone wanted it and it was allowed. I'm still quite fond of it. Now, I have to dig my drafts back up, but if anyone here is interested, I can post it somewhere. Here's what I drew up:

1. Vehicles: Tank (driver and gunner for team games), Personnel carrier (for larger custom maps), single person ATV, and 2-man Jeep (driver and gunner).

2. Grenade based weapons: Proximity mines and grenade launcher with "bounce rules". Also added hand grenades.

3. Cards: New item cards with vehicle improvements (gatling turret, vehicle repair, etc.) and hand grenade modifers (EMP grenades, stun grenades, flashbangs, etc.) Also included two new special cards (Circle Strafe and God Mode).

I made card images (which I also have to dig up) and vehicle tokens (which could probably be completely re-done). If any of you would be interested in taking a peek, I'll see about getting it hosted online somewhere.

Thread: Re: Recruit'em, Arm'em, and Frag'em

Phil you have an incredible game here that has made a number of men in my church and gaming group belivers. Wow...to have the designer reading one of my session reports...I am flattered. Frag is unique in gaming, both the design and mechanics of play, and I do not play first person shooter computer games. But the cards and mechanics in Frag are more fun...especially the Tactical Nuke combined with an Over/Under card.

While I can agree somewhat about a new map, the double sided nature of the fold out mat gives play flexibility. I would dare to suggest thick hard card stock sections that can be joined and are double sided. They would lie flat, keep cost lower than a heavy mounted fold out card stock, and be appealling. The variations on six double sided square or rectangular sections would be phenomenal in terms of scenarios and game play. Even with four it would just deepen the game. On another note I saw a custom made 3-D game board for Frag at the San Diego Comic-con years ago. I plan on building a garage around that new project.

Meanwhile, thanks for a game that I am wearing out and which has made me somewhat regret giving my extra copy away as a gift. Sure it broadened the Frag love...but even with extreme care, there is wear and tear beginning to show on my markers and tabbed figures.

To be quite Honest,

I have been adapting the FRAG rules quite a bit for the local Gaming Club in Delft, The Netherlands. Basically I thought the same way you did, and decided to combine B-movie genres, well known FPS games and my love for adapting stuff.

I have made a participation game which features the "normal rules" and has the option of modifying the whole game to use the "Zombie rules" found in certain Multiplayer FPS games.

I will post some pictures of the Demo/participation board i have made so far. (Basically i hope to have it done by next Saturday, in time for MurphyMania on the 26th)

SharkDog

See below for a WIP picture:

Thread: Recruit'em, Arm'em, and Frag'em

Don's house is becoming gaming central. He invited two newbies over and was asking for introductory games that would take them beyond Risk and Monopoly...I brought FRAG!

I knew that Don plays all games but can enjoy a good dice fest, Greg gets more laughs at this game than any other, and I just like to shoot stuff. Mark was new to it all.

Mark was the Newbie, Don was the Rookie, Greg and I have danced with this game often enough to know what to look for and how to play the map.

Four players, Three Frags to win a round, and Three Rounds.

ROUND ONE

In the first turn...Greg makes an incredible speed/movement roll that brings him up behind Mark...Frag One.

In his next turn he plays his special card that doubles all his stats until the end of his NEXT turn. That is two turns of doubled stats!!!He sneaks up on Mark again...Frag Two!

On turn three he takes his time and wants to pick up interesting weapons and gadgets. So he does some mercenary shopping and brings home a set of Beam Pistols.

On turn four he plays both of them...empties them out...rolls all the dice that goes with that option...and Frag Three.

Yes it was that easy! The rest of us where still wondering what the hell happened! The "You gonna die suckah!" factor just quadrupled in the game.

ROUND TWO

We are all agreed...Greg has to die...often...quickly. Don scores the first Frag against Greg. He is a rookie no more. The collective satisfaction level of the game just went up. No one says a word, but we silently nod in agreement toward Don. Greg is concerned.

One or two Frags get exchanged, but that is not what is important. What is important is...who is going to Frag Greg next. It is Mark...the newbie. When Mark toasts Greg...we get verbal. Sweet move...Nice going...Well played. It was remeniscent of the munchkins in Wizard of Oz...HI HO GREG IS DEAD! Greg is worried.

Now it is close.

I have 2 Frags, and Don has 2 Frags...who can get to Greg first?

Don takes him out and scores Frag Three! Greg is done! He reminds us all that we can stop targetting him now that we have had our revenge. Did I mention that he won the first game in four rounds??? It is not over. Greg is doomed!

ROUND THREE

Don, Mark, and I all play to two Frags each. At this point Greg is just a Car Crash Dummy. He is not the only one in the game that has gotten Fragged...but he is the one person that has taken more lethal damage than anyone else.

Don is merciful...I guess...to score Frag Three he takes out his guest, Mark. Yep! Let me introduce you to gaming...YOUR DEAD!!! I am left holding a Tactical Nuke...damn detante!

This was a great three rounds. Frag plays quickly...and Greg is such a good sport...but c'mon...who wins a round in four turns????? Don was versatile and while rounds two and three were close...he played a real good game getting his Frags in Round Three with less (at one point his weapon was an upgraded chainsaw!) than stellar weaponry!!

Between making FRAGS and getting FRAGGED...Mark had a great time and was won over into broader gaming. I would not normally consider FRAG a gateway game...but it has its moments...and this was one of them!

I think one of the biggest problems Frag has for most people is the math. As the designer, I'm guilty of having designed a game with a math element that I can handle very quickly in my head. I frequently find myself the guy adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing when playing games.

In playtests, there was always someone at the table to handle the math. Unfortunately, I made the mistake in not testing the game enough times without that type of person at the table.

If I were to design a new edition of the game, and I'm not at the moment, adding a streamlined combat mechanic would be one of the first changes I would make.
One thing that kills Frag is the math. Adding up dice and then dividing scores is as anti-beer and pretzles as you get. A rule varient I've championed is this: Roll the number of dice as suggested by the attack / defense. Compare the dice in descending order. For each die the attacker has over the defender count as a wound. The defender wins ties excepts on 6's, which the attacker wins.

It is simple and speeds up game play a lot. Plus you can play "betterer while drunkerer." ;-)

Plus who wants to add up 12 dice and then divide that number? Ouch, my brain is already hurting!

What do you think?

Thread: The Object of Their Desire

The first session of FRAG played pretty evenly. There were three of us and one was a newbie. I scored a Frag on each of the other players early on in the game and my soon to be third Frag after I picked up a portable nuke dropped when my veteran co-players got Fraged the first time. After that it was just a matter of time and I scored my last Frag.

That is where the problems began. Now my fellow players and Dogzard who had just joined us had a taste for blood, and I became the object of their desire.

The game started off quite balanced. Gadgets and Weapons were desired by all. I started off with a Flame Thrower and some Light Armor. Later I picked up a machine gun near spawning point #1. My co-players seemed to be hoarding as they moved across the board and scored on their 50%+ rolls to pick up all sorts of stuff. In the first encounter of the game I am close to being toast by a player but play an Adrenaline card. Unfortunately my stats go to zero and the first non scoring Frag of the game is yours truly. This set the tone for the rest of the game. I left them my toys to play with. Machine Gun, Flame thrower, and of course a life counter.

Now they wanted to use the toys.

I was the one player looking pretty lean on both gadgets and weapons so after barely surviving one encounter, it just left me ripe for the pickings for a second player. Second Frag of the game...me.

No sweat...I can respawn. Unfortuanately I respawn two hexes away from another gadget and toy ridden opponent. With just a pistol and no armor or med kits my best option is to run...I roll double two's. On his next turn I am toast. Third Frag of the game...me.

Okay, I respawn. No one has even bothered to pick up my flame thrower from the first frag drop. So I make my way from spawning point #6 to spawning point #1 were all my stuff is. Everyone else is on the other side of the board. I make a roll that gets me two hexes away from my "old flame" (pun intended) but feeling good because all the action is up north.

Unfortunately the taste for my blood is in the air. Everyone else has had a couple of turns to gather equipment and weapons and will take a lot to kill. I on the other hand am pretty much naked...though far away. With a speed of three my following opponent plays a Speed +3 card and rolls a movement of 14 on his first three dice. and 12 on the next three for his Speed starting stat of 3. He can reach out and touch me...for Frag number four of the game.

I am getting tired of this.

My buddies dance around each other. Gathering more gadgets, weapons, and by now a huge number of med packs. The poke a little at each other but cannot seem to take each other out. The question on everyone's mind is where will El Hidalgo respawn next.

I respawn yet again. Spawning point #3 finds me at the Northeast end. They are spread out across the board but it seems like I have some hard to resist musk after shave. Eau de Frag. I miss my weapon pick up roll but score on an Over Under Gadget card. That would be nice with at least one weapon card. My friends have left some throw away weapons across the board because they have several to choose from in play. I try to make it to the closest weapon, a shot gun and manage to pick it up. My opponent is six hexes away but I figure I can take him. And I do...all the way down to the last medpack he has to play which leaves him at one health. Which just so happens to be enough to take me out on his upcoming turn...Frag number five of the game.

The only consolation is that one of the other players takes advantage of my initiative, and takes out my would be kill by knocking him down off his last health point.

I AM NOT FRAG #6

My co-fragee has kept a number of cards in his hand and out of play. He respawns and quickly tricks out his psycopathic mercenary. However, with no cards in my hand, and back on respawn point #3...I am thinking that Fraging myself would not be such a bad idea. It is, after all getting painful.

I survive three rounds, but manage to pick up two gadgets in the meanwhile. My only weapon is the standard pistol as the dice lice favor the enemy.

Dogzard closes in for the last kill. Movement rolls of four on two dice keeps me predictable, close, and the enemy circling for the kill. Dogzard is there first, and is quick and merciful...total lie. He wants to play every freakin dice roll he can as he rolls, tallies, rolls again...tallies...and even after I am deader than dead...rolls again. I am Frag #7 of the game.

In the spirit of the game...it is not over until the last grenade has popped.

Thread: Re: Fragoscape

thanks tony and yes i don't think a 4 health guy dying in 2 shots is a problem only because it keeps the game moving fast. i wanted frag to be super fast and furious like an FPS. when you look at a game like halo everyone is the exact same character and play style makes things different. when you generate your characters in frag you are creating your play style. a 4 health character is some one who is just a bit tougher to take out (maybe he is jumping up and down, which makes you slower and meshes with game mechanics of frag). this also makes character creation not terribly important (thus faster) because wheather you are a 1 health or 4 your still gonna die and it encourages everyone to get out there and start shooting. when we played some of us never even went after a pick-up because we wanted the early bird kills. it felt a lot more like an fps.

here's some additional rules changes we tried in case anyones interested:
1. you can only use health packs on your turn
2. all your stuff is discarded when you die. no one gets it (game flys because there are less counters).
3.you can only ever have 2 weapons plus your pistol, and 1 item (like halo)
4. even when you lose health you still roll your base number (kinda like regenerating shields in halo)

anyways thats my ideas on it. what do you think?

p.s. i bet you can't guess what video game we play a lot :P

Thread: Fragoscape

so my buddies and i hate frag because of the combat system. rolling all the dice and adding them and doing all the division. tank characters or characters who have won several games can't be killed. your pistol is useless. forget that crap. on top of that, the game drags when players start camping for stuff. our solution was to change all the combat dice rolls to heroscape dice. for example your health is 2, you roll two heroscape dice in defense your attack is 4 you roll four heroscape dice. can you see how cool it is to roll three skulls and your enemy with 2 health is doomed to take 1 damage and is probably gonna die. two things happen when you do this. 1 the game zooms by at twice the speed because everyone dies much faster (a four health tank can be reduced by 2 from a pistol). 2 no more math problems. no other rules need to be changed as far as we can tell. frag is too fun for words when you use this variant. give it a try. in case you don't have any heroscape dice i'll break down what the rolls are: 4,5,6 are "skulls" or hits and 5,6 are "shields" or defense. give it a try at your next frag game and see what happens i bet you'll be having the time of your life.
OH! one more thing, haloclix rock as models to use in frag.

I certainly do like the DoA *concepts* which feel more like a campaign game than FPS. Mebbe wargamers and non-Euro BGG gamers would prefer DoA.

aka.
I have yet to play Doom's boardgame but I would think the Tank style character would have some major advantages in an enclosed space. Put him in a narrow hall and he should be able to seal it up pretty effectively. I was kinda looking at Space Hulk maps to build levels, but you run into the same issue with the tank acting like a wall with guns.

Frag: Deathmatch has some fun looking CTF options. Unfortunately, last time I had 8 people together, playing Frag we didn't play ctf because more than half were new players we didn't need to confuse them with extra mechanics. I would love to try a 4 on 4 Ctf session though.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

I haven't painted in over 5 years and when I dug all my stuff out, a lot of the paints had dried out and could not be brought back from the dead. I painstakingly brought back the worst of them with a little water and a ton of stirring. Those old GW paint containers SUCK! I had two bottles of the same color, one in the last generation screw top (squat with black lids) and the other in the even older flip top that snapped on. Amazzingly, the OLDER paint was still usable and 90% of the paint in the newer style was worthless.

But the most disappointing thing of all, was seeing how bad my eyes have got in 5 years!

Now, back on topic...

I've been wanting to play a variant for FRAG! using the Doom: The Boardgame tiles to see how feasible it is. I know you can play Doom: The Boardgame in a "Capture the Flag" or "Deathmatch" variant - which is probably the most similar to Frag! of the two.

What do you think? Can you forsee any issues in a more enclosed environment?

Nice work. The PVP miniatures in the PVP expansion set are also very good, but I wish they were more beginner-painter-oriented sculpts. Anyway, *any* miniatures work just fine, and I use the fun goofy minis from the Gregory Horror Game:

With the base game, I just use my ccg counters, rather than cutting anything out from the card sheet. IIRC, We also found out that having one health was *not* a good idea. Someone rolled a "1" when taking damage and took 60+ hits...

aka. Washu! ^O^

Frag is definately a lot of fun.

Look for some cool miniatures to represent the different players - it adds even more flavor to the game.

I finally painted mine up and posted them here at BGG. These are the Official miniatures, but anything similar would work well (40K ect...)

Thread: A Fragging good time

I bought a copy of Frag on Ebay for about half the retail price. After my hands cramped up from the scissors to cut out the tokens I gathered a few buddies from work for some mindless violence.

Reading strategies on this game, the four of us made our characters. I made a jackrabbit fast guy that could get knocked down by a stiff breeze (1 strength, 2 accuracy, 4 speed). My friend made a tank (4 strength, 2 accuracy, 1 speed). Another built a sniper (1 strength, 4 accuracy, and 2 speed) The last made a well balanced character ( 2h, 3a, 3s). We chose a map and off we went.

The game was a hoot, between screwing the leader, joking around, and finding interesting combinations to save our behinds, everyone had a great time. No one character type seemed to be too unbalanced. One guy kept trying to keep to himself and acquire a suitcase full of weapons and equipment. This did seem to slow the game a bit, but once we put some pressure on him (by ganging up on him) he began to move and the game started to flow smoothly.

The special cards added a fun angle, allowing some equalization among players (the guys behind will usually gang up on the leader). Cards like "No Carrier" (where the target loses his connection to the gme and is instantly killed) add flavor to the game.

As you can tell by my few geekbadges, I love Ameritrash, so the dice rolls don't bother me. The game is a bit high priced for what you get but if you could pick it up for less, I would suggest it. It is a great game for a few friends to share.

I have Doom the boardgame - its miniatures and boards are a classic fit with Frag. Indeed in the expansion set there are rules for various games like capture the Flag that can be used with Frag rules instead.

Hi--

I don't have extra cards, but I could send you a scan of what you need; you could put them in sleeves (as well as the ones you have already, so that they would all look the same from the back).

Let me know if this interests you.

Chris Johnson

Go over to TheMiniaturespage.com, and check under Sci Fi minis for addresses of manufacturers. There are scads of suitable minis out there; if nothing else, you could use Games Workshop minis (a la Space Hulk).

Thread: Re: Frag - A quick review

Yeah, totally agree this game is good for a Laff. I haven't played it for years, I bought it for a mate. I may pick it up for my self, but I've got Doom, so I'm gonna get the deathmatch expansion for that, which is (probably) slightly less random.

Not that Random Death isn't fun. (In Games, less so in real life(TM))
