Hi Costas
The extra amount does not have to be paid to build track from a city to which a player’s railroad is already connected.

Pierre
Steambrothers

While the rules are clear that building out of your starting coastal city incurs no additional cost, but starting a 2nd network out of another coastal city DOES incur cost, what if you use that second network to build TO your starting coastal city (thereby connecting your networks)?

Do you have to pay extra to build INTO your initial coastal city?

Thread: Re: China map - building track rules question

Hi Mario
You can't use the railroad of another player to extend your network. A player may have 2 separate railroads but each of them must be connected to one of his own coastal city.

As an answer to your question blue player can't buid from B to H since it isn't part of one his network that would connect to a coastal (red) city.

Pierre
steambrothers

Thread: Re: China map - building track rules question

Sorry but the literal tenor of the rule is not very clear. In basic AOS each player railroad is a line between one city to another: that is enough to talk about a player railroad; so, if that line is connected, in some way, to a red city, that would observe the AOS China rule.

Therefore, according to your interpretation, in AOS China, the line built from a red city can be of a single color (of a single player)?

In this case, blue player can't buid from B to H?

Hi Mario
As stated in the rules you place 1 red red good in Lan Chow, Chung King and Sian THEN place 2 goods on every city including the Russia hex. So I confirm to you that Lan Chow, Chung King and Si-An will receive 3 cubes each.

Hope you'll have as much fun as we did on this map and don't hesitate to try this map with 5 players. There is space enough for that number of players.

Thanks for your interest.

Pierre
Steambrothers

Thread: Age of Steam South America session report

When playing Age of Steam with 5 players the choice of map is more limited than with 4 players. The South American map is usually played within our group with 4 players but we playtested it several times with 5 players and we really had very good games. The El Presidente is usually more powerful with 5 players.

With an awful set up of goods Pierre betted 6 for the initial bet and choose the urbanization action. He began the game in the northeastern area but he also began with a neighbor named Mario. Nathalie began the game in the center, Martin in the southeast and Marc-Andre in the northwest area. Mario choose the El Presidente action and it already paid him a good amount for a first round. Every players took 3 shares and Martin won the important urbanization action but he had to back up 2 on the income track as he had to ship twice but he forgot that he had to give something to the El Presidente. Martin didn't give up and builded a nice loop in the southern part of the map. Pierre took the first build action to deny Mario from connecting his area but this battle probably costed both players any chance of winning the game as the area was already very poor. Turn 4 was the turning point of the game as Martin took 4 shares , won the loco, connected Santiago and made 2 nice deliveries of 5 income each. After this, Martin had an easy finish but there was still some battles for second place.

Martin had a big lead over the rest of the players but we really had a nice challenging game. The El Presidente was choosen in every turn and paid 5, 6 and 7 $ for the players who took it. This was really important in such a tough scenario.

Final score:
Martin: 77
Marc-Andre: 48
Nathalie: 47
Pierre: 45
Mario: 42

Thread: Age of Steam China session report

With 4 players in great shape tonight we decided to play the AoS China map. The main new rule that implies that you have to pay to connect the cities and the tough terrain hexes usually makes this map very challenging.

Thanks to Pierre, the set up of goods was very tough so it wasn't surprising that the bets went very high on round 1 even if Pierre started the betting round at 4$. Everybody else raise their bid and Pierre had to drop , even worse Martin had to pay 3$ for 3rd place ! Martin and Mario started in the plains on the eastern coast, Pierre choose the northeastern region and Nathalie went alone in the southern region and made 2 nice deliveries of 2 income on round 1. Mario again won the urbanization action on round 2 and was beginning to build many loops around Peking, Martin also had a good second round when he shipped 2 goods for 3 income each. On turn 3 Martin again had the chance to take the loco action and make 2 deliveries of 4 income each but instead he went for first build in order to be able to connect the vital city of Peking. So Mario had a nice break when he was able to choose the loco action. During this time Pierre was building toward Russia through Peking and Nathalie had a nice lead and she made 3$ profit. Nathalie was finally able to win a bet and she urbanized in her area. Martin was happy to win the loco action with his second place and he was on his way for the lead. Mario was also on a good mood when he shipped 2 goods for 5 income each on turn 5 and 6. On turn 7 Pierre decided it was time to bid and he won the loco action and made 2 shippings of 5 income and at the same time he denied Mario in connecting Russia when he choose the last exit from this important city. The end of the game was very close as everybody shipped for 6 income.

This game was very exciting and very close. The first build action was critical for many turns as interaction was great. When playing AoS you can never take anything for granted so don't suppose that your opponent will not take the last exit you need to connect a city or that he will not see that you only have 1 interesting deliveries to finish the game. It's almost as important to take a look at other players game than yours when planning your turn.

Final scoring:
Martin and Pierre: 94
Mario: 84
Nathalie: 78

Hi Pierre,

I think the shipping from/through/to BA is more interesting than the actual Action. El P did have some impact and could have more in other games. We'll see. Giving a $1 in AoS is a LOT at times, indeed. But, having to pay the $1 just to ship is kinda cool.

Hi Andrew
Good session report. That's the kind of game we usually in our group with this map. It's very tough and interaction is great. El Presidente is not usually the first action choosen but when the games are very close this action can be very useful as it save you from taking additional shares in the next turns and more important this extra money come from the other players

Thread: Re: Peaks and Valleys- South American Age of Steam

I thought this was an excellent map. Despite sucking it up against you AoS masters, I had a good time. I totally blew the early game... falling back twice when I couldn't pay for my expenses... to the tune of 3 income spots. That's a tough road in this game. I had lots of good ships late, but I lost momentum building track, and didn't expand enough in the middle game when I was saving some money to catch up to everybody else. When we tallied track at the end I was 6-7 links behind everybody else... that's 2 turns of building I lost out on in mid-game. This game is SO unforgiving yet I love it

Chris sneaked into BA and it paid off HUGE. I thought I'd try to lock out BA and get paid off late in the game but it turns out Chris's single link in paid huge, while my 4-5 other links in were hardly used. OUCH. I was never w/o a shipping option, but I just fell behind early and never really got back into it.

Thread: Peaks and Valleys- South American Age of Steam

Ever since aquiring the Steam Brother maps I've been waiting to play one... Age of Steam is one of my favorite games. We had 4 players (Andy, Jim, Chris and Haskell) last night. I had heard that South America was a good one for that player number.

The game started with people taking more shares than usual. The map's flavor of rivers and costly mountains put everyone into a state of needing cash on hand. Its rare in our group that players will take 2 shares at the beginning. I did and I think Jim did as well. Haskell and Chris may have taken 1 each. Haskell was playing the minimal share issuance game for many turns hoping to do more with less. This helped in the beginning as he had a taken Loco in the first round building a two link from Cordoba to Ascuncion. I started in La Paz to Ascuncion by urbanizing the Mountain town with a black. Chris started an Eastern Seaboard Coastal route and Jim when from BA to Cordoba.

Things quickly grew out of hand from there. I stayed West for the most part but tried to get into BA for the end game blue shipments. Chris took a link from me along the way so it was assured I'd have to ship through his link on route to BA. I think I gave him 6 points. Jim was West too most of the game but with more of a Southern network. Haskell was central mostly and suffered from uneven shipments about 4 turns into the game. He did have a lot of track but felt he was too invested in the center and North East- having 4 of the 6 entries into Ascuncion. Chris was more of a Coastal company for most of the game but also was able to get into the Northen cities whilst creating more via urbanization. Jim thought that he went into BA too early forcing him to have to use it (and thus potentially pay $1 to the bank or player).

El Presidente was an interesting choice a few times but generally didn't mean a whole lot. Jim _may_ have had to drop on the income track once due to not having the $$. He and I both dropped down in the first few turns due to not having the income levels for our expenses. But, we soon broke out of that. My Western North/South routes started to kick in as I increased my locomotive. In the end, I was able to get it to 6 while having the shipments to protect. Though, as I mentioned, many were only 5 due to having to pay Chris 1 on route to BA. It looked like I was going to run away with the game but Chris did a great job of closing the gap from a weaker starting position.

Andy- 95
Chris- 88
Haskell-85
Jim- 75

I'd play this map again. The later turns were getting tough as the map was laced with networks. I'd think 3 players would be too few on this map. 5 players may be too many but I'd be willing to see.
Thread: Age of Steam South America session report

It was a long time since our last play on the South America but with so many new expansions lately we're not able to play all our maps as often as we would like. South America is one of our first map and it is appreciated since the rules are very simple and the El Presidente add some flavor to the game. But the geography of the map is very tough with the Andean mountains in the western part of the map and with so many rivers in the rest of the map.

Martin began the first bet at 4$ and the rest of the players went down. Pierre started in the west, Martin in the middle of the map, Marc-Andre in the south and Mario began his network in his favorite region in the northeast region. The players were very agressive right at the start of the game when Martin took the first build action on turn 2 when he wanted to split Mario's network in two parts. Marc-Andre urbanized the purple city in the southeast region and was able to isolate it from other players. Marc Andre had a strong start and on turn 3 he made 2 deliveries of 5 income each. It seemed this was enough for him since Pierre was building in expensive area and Martin and Mario were fighting each other in the east. On turn 4 Marc-Andre betted high for the yellow urbanization and put the yellow city far from his network and he later shipped many yellow goods for high income. On the same turn Mario finally linked Buenos Aires and was back in the game with 2 nice deliveries of 5 income each. Pierre's situation was tough but he had some breaks when he took the El Presidente action and made lot of money fron the goods the other players delivered to, from or through Buenos Aires. Marc-Andre was continuing his great game when he was made a big loop around in the southern region and then shiiped for 6 income each time until the end of the game.

This was really a tough game and we sam many fights even if there seemed to be enough space for everyone on this map. There are many choke points and the first build action was choosen several times in order for players that didn't want to be cornered in a small area.

Final scoring:
Marc-Andre: 108
Martin: 77
Mario: 75
Pierre: 69

Thread: Age of Steam: South America

I noticed that this map doesn't have any reviews, so let me be the first. This is a review of just the South America side of the map, based on one 5-player play.

South America is the type of Age of Steam map that I like. Its based on real-world geography, with only slight rule changes to customize the game play for the map.

Map:
The map is the approx the middle third of South America, from La Paz in the North to Bahia Blanca in the South. Most of the map is wide open, with only the mighty Amazon river as terrain. Along the West side, the towering Andes block the path of the rail networks.

Rule Changes:
Much like London being red on the S. England part of the Age of Steam Expansion #1 - England & Ireland map, Buenos Aries is the only blue city on the map, and the blue New City is removed from the game. BA gets a new cube in every production step, as well as being a numbered city that may recieve goods based on the dice roll. Obviously no blue cubes can be placed on BA, instead being set aside an a new cube drawn in its place.

Mountains (the Andes) cost $6 to build through

Turn Order is removed and in its place is the El Presidente action. When a good is delivered to, from, or through BA the player must pay $1 to El Presidente. If they don't have $1 they move back 1 on the income track and the $1 is claimed from the bank. If no player has taken the El Presidente action the $1 must still be paid to the bank. The player who took the El Presidente action does not have to pay the $1 to himself or the bank.

Impressions:
I liked this map. The board was open enough to fit 5 players without getting too tight too early. I would not attempt 6 on this map as the mountains cause enough bunching early that it would get too crowded too fast. It plays much like the S. England map, and is a good subtitute for that hard to find map. I'd play again, especially if I wanted a less brain-burning map without wanting to go back to the Rust Belt map.
Thread: South America is a nice map!

We played the South America map with four players yesterday and it was not bad at all. Money was a problem during the whole game which made the game quite heavy. All the rivers on the map and the very expensive mountains to the west made a good economy even more important than in the original game and stocks had to be released throughout the game.

In our sessions all players are usually within a few points in the end of the game but not on this map. The high rail building costs gives luck with the production phase a larger influence than on the original map. This isn't necessarily a bad thing since our group genrally don't use the production card often enough.

The special El Presidente card that allows one player to collect one coin for every good that pass through Buenos Aires is a nice add to the game. This card allows one player to just sit back and collect money if all other plans goes down the drain, which unfortunately often happens to me .

Nice map! But I prefer the original or the Ireland map. We were only four playing this game and there wasn't a lot to build in the end anymore so I think that this one may be tough with five or six players. I love Age of Steam, and this map can definitely be recommended.
Thread: Age of Steam China session report

China expansion was the first AoS expansion from the Steambrothers and it's still one of our favorite. It's always a very challenging map and interaction is usually great. Four players would contend tonight on this map, Marc-André, Martin, Mario and Pierre.

Set up of the game was awful and the locomotive action was choose on fourth position in round 1. Players prefered actions like urbanization, engineer and first build to have a better start with some interesting deliveries. Marc-André and Mario started in the east, Martin in the southeast and Pierre in the southwest region. Surprisingly, Mario began the bets at 1 and then bet again at 5 and choose urbanization. Even if we started this scenario with more money 3 players had to back down on the income track during the income and expense phase. Mario started the bets the same way as round 2 and again won the urbanization action and made some nice loops in the Peking area. Marc-Andre stole some interesting goods from Mario by giving him some income but this way he denied Mario from some high shippings. Pierre and Martin were struggling in their mountainous region as the cost of the terrain is very high and the display of goods was tough in their area. Pierre was able to connect Peking and Russia but it costed him too much shares to build to be very profitable. Marc-Andre and Mario clearly had the lead and were the first to ship for 5 and 6 income. Mario,s score was higher but Marc-Andre again used a low share strategy and they were very close before the last scoring.

This was really an exciting game for our first AoS game of the year and the result was also exciting since Mario and Marc-André had a perfect tie. They builded nice networks with many loops and even if they gave many income to other players they always had goods available for big shippings.

Final scoring:
Marc-André: 97
Mario: 97
Martin: 83
Pierre: 68

Thread: Age of Steam South America session report

South America map was our choice tonight. It has been a long time since our last game on this map specially with 4 players. It's always fun to rediscover a map like this. The South America looks easy at first look but money is often becoming a big problem for most of the game.

Mario was the only player to start with 2 additional and as usual he began with the urbanization action. Mario always like to start in the northeast spot but this time he choose a start up on the west coast and reserve the purple urbanization for himself. Martin began with a Cordoba/Buenos Aires link, Laurence was on the east coast and Pierre choose the Cordoba/Asuncion link. Mario again won the second bet and again selected urbanization and this time he put a black new city on Conception. He was also able to connect Cordoba who was becoming very central for three players. Mario and Laurence were the only ones to bet in the first four rounds and during this time while Pierre and Martin were switching from 3rd to 4th place. As expected money was a real problem for every players and the El Presidente action was choosen in every rounds except the last 2 turns. Laurence betted high at the beginning of the game and on turn 3 she won the first build action to block mario from connecting Buenos Aires and at the same time she connected Bahia Blanca. Mario was still able to find a way to connect the important city of Buenos Aires but it costed him one turn. Martin had a difficult start when Mario and Pierre urbanize his network in 2 consecutive rounds but he had a nice comeback and shipped 2 goods for 5 income in round 4. From turn 5 Pierre decided not to take any more shares and during this time the other players were betting high and finally Martin won first place with urbanization and finish a nice loop in the north that assured him many interesting deliveries. He did the same thing next round and assured himself the first place. For the last 2 turns the 3 other players would fight for second place and it was a hard fight battle.

Martin won the game with his nice network and his loops. Even with his first place money was a matter for him for most of the game and he had to choose the El Presidente action and it paid him good amount of money to help him in subsequent round. This was our kind of game, tough, money scarce, high interaction and fun.

Final scoring:
Martin: 104
Pierre:85
Mario: 79
Laurence: 72

Hi Jeff
Very good session report. Hope you'll have the chance to try the other maps from this expansion kit soon. You seem to have a great group to be able to play China with 6 players. We'll keep you informed about the next Steambrothers maps and we should have good news for you very soon.

Thanks

Pierre
Steambrothers

Thread: 6-player China

We played a game of AoS last night using the China map. Wow, by about the 3rd turn I wasn't so much worried about winning as staying solvent. Man is this an expensive map, but we had a lot of fun with it, even though Dave D. absolutely kicked our collective butts. The China map comes with an AoS expansion produced by the Steam Brothers.

The six players and our experience levels were:

Dave D - 3rd play
Mike - 2nd play
Jeff - 2nd play
Dave S - first play
Eric - First play
Ross - 2nd play

I'm sure we could have played a friendlier map for new players, but with AoS friendly is really a relative term, especially when you have 6 players. I guess if you want lots of room and plenty of money play Railroad Tycoon, as AoS is about tight money, cut-off tracks and tense play.

All in all, I thought all players acquitted themselves quite well, and except for Dave D's breakaway win over the last 2 turns, the rest of us we very close.

For those of you who have not played the China map, there are lot of mountains and lots of rivers. Just to add to the expenses, other than your turn one starting city you have to pay a 'bribe' to build into or out of any city where you do not already have a connection. The amount you pay is equal to the goods production number on the city. You can use the engineer action to cut the bribe amount in half (rounded up). What this means is many of us were paying at least $12 to connect to our first city.

You start with $20 in this game, but only 2 issued shares. I had read other session reports indicating people were issuing 3 shares on turn two, which seemed extreme to me, but that was before I was actually playing.

I will mention a couple of other unique things about China. First, Peking is the only purple city, and will remain so as the purple New City is removed from play. Second, players can make an expensive connection to Russia, but have to build through the Gobi desert and must pay $6 bribes to connect to Russia. Goods can only ship out of Russia, never into Russia. A goods cube is placed in Russia during every production phase, so a nice little stockpile build up there maing it a tempting destination for players building in the northern portion of the map.

I took first player on turn one with a $5 bid. Looking at the map, Hong Kong had 2 blue cubes making a connection to the blue city Chang Sha attractive.Chung King had two red cubes, which could be connected to the red starting city, Hanoi. I took Locomotive as my special action, knowing one of those connections would be open and with a 2-link train I could deliver 2 goods and be at 4 income after turn one. First build went north, towards Peking, so I had my choice. I connected Hong Kong to Chang Sha, via the town Nan Chang. Eric squelched my plans by also building from Hong Kong to Chang Sha. I had made the mistake of coming into Chang Sha from the east, instead of the SE. I have connected in the SE hexside, it would have forced Eric to build a $15 line through 2 mountain hexes or crossover my line for a $14 connection, which might have scared him off. I also could have build out of Chang Sha later to the east towards Shaghai, a city no one built connect to until much later. Chalk one up to inexperience and the poor assumption that players would initially shy away from building into the same cities.

Mike took the Hanoi to Chung King route, so three of us were competing for the southern routes. Ross built out of Tsin Tao, and made a beeline towards Si-An, pretty much uncontested. Dave S and Dave D started in Port Arthur and Wei Hai Wei, and eventually controlled most of the northern half of the map.

The China map has many towns, and those are easily reached from the starting positions, while it is quite costly to reach some of the cities. This resulted in urbanization being the top choice on turns 2 and 3. The bidding for first player was quite spirited with it usually taking around a bid of 7 to get it. I believe it hit 8 one time.

Meanwhile competition for line in the south were fierce with three players there. Every hex around Chang Sha and Chung King soon had track in them. I had to go north of Chung King and do a hard curve to sneak in the northeast hex side. Eric had built before me and had connected to Chung King from Chang Sha and then also connected Chung King to Kwei Yang. This put me in a serious bind and I quickly began crunching numbers in my head to see if I could get to Chung King and ship a good in order to avoid bankruptcy. My 2nd move had resulted in me adding a link to my train, which was now a 3-link. Fortunately, I had first move on turn two and was able to do a 3-link shipment of a red cube from CHung King back to Hong Kong. This gave me just enough money to pay my expenses, which meant I could not add another link to my train in the 2nd goods movement phase, as I could not pay my expenses had I done so. This would come back to haunt me in turns 5 and 6 when I had to use a goods movement phase to add a link to my train and was only able to ship one good in each turn. Ross connected to Si-an, but also had to spend some movement adding links to his train before reaping the benefit of getting to Si-An first.

Dave D and Dave S continued to expand their lines in the north. As much as they would have liked to block one or the other off, there were just too many towns that can be connected to for that to happen, and both soon had lines into Peking.

My money situation was serious, even issuing 3 shares a turn, so I bowed out of the bidding and ended up as the 6th player. This allowed Mike and Eric to connect to Si-An and Cheng Tu, leaving me no exit from Chung King. Fortunately, new goods had been added to Chung King and Chung Sha, so I did no building on turn 3, but I was still able to ship two goods. This finally got me out of danger on the money front.

On turn 4 I finallly got urbanization and used it to create a black new city at Wuhan, and I build track from Shanghai to Wuhan, via Nanking. Shaghai had two black cubes. The only problem was these were 2-link shipments, while others, especially Dave D, was starting to make 4-link shipments. By turn 5 Dave had connected to many towns and was able to take long zig-zag routes to really boost his income. Dave S was heading to Russia where he planned to ship yellow cubes all the way to Harbin, a 5-link shipment. Mike was witing patiently for white ones to be rolled during good production, as all three cubes on the chart for Hanoi were blue and he had a connection to the blue city Chung Sha. Not a single one was rolled for the first three turns. On turn 4, a couple came up. Several other cities had no goods left to replenish and the Production special ability was looking better all the time.

Let me say this as well, in a 6-player game the Turn Order special action was very effective. I believe whoever had that was almost always able to get 2nd, sometimes third position, without having to bid any money at all.

On turn 5 and 6 Dave D was able to do all shipments of 4 or 5 links, and I think 3 of the shipments were 5's. This really pushed him out to a big lead. Others had to use part of their movements to add links to their trains before they could make the long shipments. I connected Wuhan to Nan Chang and was able to complete a 4 and 5 shipment myself, but only one of each.

I did not right down the final scores, but I definitely recall Dave had a score of 72, which has to be an excellent score on the China map with 6 players. Dave also had the most links, just adding to his lead.

I believe the scores were something like:

Dave D - 72
Ross - 40
Dave S - 37
Jeff - 35
Mike - 33
Eric - 25

If any of you guys read this and can provide correct scores please jump in.

Money is always tight in AoS and the higher costs in China makes for a very tight and tense game with 6 players. This was only my second play, but Age of Steam has already become one of my favorite games. It is a brain-burner deluxe. Some of the longest delays in the game happened as players decided how many shares they wanted to issue. The delays didn't bother me as I was usually calculating possible routes and determining what my plan A, B and C would be, as well as trying to calculate how much I could bid, still build track and pay my expenses. You also have to factor in what you can ship, and if there was a chance another player may ship a good before you got to it.

AoS is a great game for those who like heavy games, and I found the China map was also very enjoyable. It would still produce a tight game with 5 players, whereas it's probably not tight enough for 3 players.

I'm looking forward to other expansions from the Steam Brothers in Canada.

Thread: How much does it cost to build track into river towns?

We played a China map game last night for the first time. We had a great game. (My opinion might be slightly biased given that I won. :devil

One rules question came up that we didn't have an answer for though. There are several towns on the China map that are in hexes with rivers. (Wahan and Nanking are two. This does not exist in the base map.)

How much does it cost to build into one of these towns?

The "town" cost would be $1+$1/spur out of the town. The "river" cost would be $3. We voted and chose to just follow the town rule and ignore the presence of the river, and there were a couple of cases where this saved someone a little money. What do other people do? Pierre/Martin, if you are listening, what did you intend?

Thanks.

Dave

Thread: Age of Steam China session report

Our last game on China with 6 players was played a long time ago. We're always anxious before beginning a 6 players game on any map but on China it's more challenging.

Marc began the bets of round 1 at 4$ and won 2nd place. Nathalie took loco in position 1 and builded in the mountainous southwest, Marc Andre urbanize near Sian and builded in the middle of the map, Martin began in Hong Kong, Pierre-Luc started near Marc, Adrien connected Peking and Pierre was left with a start in the northeast region. Already in round 2 the game was very tense and Adrien blocked Pierre in his tentative to connect Peking through Tien Tsin. Marc already shipped 2 goods at 2 and 3 income. In round 3 every players had to issue 3 or 4 shares and first place was won with 10 ! We're all grateful that we start the game with 20$. Then Adrien made a surprise yellow urbanization in the middle of the map and many players went to connect this new city. Adrien began this round with 28$ and at the end he only had 3$ left. At this time Pierre began to extend his network for Russia. On the next round Marc was surprised when every players except one betted and he had to go down with 5th place. Martin and Nathalie network were very close to each other and they had to steal goods one from another. The game was very tough and at the end of the round Pierre-Luc was the only player to do some money. On turn 5 evil Marc Andre pushed the the green and yellow player to 21 income at the same time. Pierre couldn't let this kind of evil move unpunished so he had to push Marc Andre to 21 income. Again it was Pierre's job to do this kind of move so the green and yellow players can have some king of revenge ! The players were still very poor and they only made 2 to 4$ after the income expenses phase. Game became so tough that Marc even had to give some income to other players (and Pierre) at the end of the game.

Finally Adrien was able to win his first Age of Steam game in the Steambrothers group. The game was very close until the end. Overall we had a tough time, with many issued shares, high bets, high cost of building. Finally this is the kind of game we like. China again was great for 6 players.

Final scoring:
Adrien: 48
Marc-André: 47
Pierre-Luc: 46
Pierre 43
Martin: 36
Nathalie: 30

In China expansion, you begin the game with 20$ and 2 shares.
So you didn't have to take share in first round. With 20$ you have enought money to bid and build.¸
So at the end of turn 1, Adrien had 2 shares + 2 loco and 4 of income, so that's how you can be even on turn 1.

Ciao

Martin

dedefortin wrote:
Laurence hadn't play with uf for a long time and we let decided what to play tonight and she choosed the easy Chinese expansion of Age of Steam. We all supposed she had a plan for asking a map like this without any hesitation.

Adrien had a strong start in the southwest region when he had loco on turn 1 with 2 deliveries of 2 income for turn 1 and he was even in the income and expense phase. Pierre began in the northeast and the 3 other players were on the eastern coast and very close to each other, another exciting game was to predict. Marc-Andre went for a low strategy share he he took a big gamble when he was on verge on being confined to a 2 links network but he had a break when Laurence decided to go west of Sian. So there was an exit left for him to go out of Sian. As usual Sian was the target of many players and everyone bet on their first try even if the betting started at 4 ! The same situation occured in round 4 when Adrien started the bids at 5 and then 8 but Mario won with 9 for the loco. action. Also in this round 3 players were on their way to connect Changshiak they all felt short of 1 track to arrive there so next round would be critical because it was the gate to Russia. Apart Marc-Andre everyone had to take shares since the beginning of the game and they now feel they had to begin to make some profit so the spendings went down and Marc-Andre won the next bet at 4 only and he choose to urbanize the blue new City far from Pierre so he couldn't use it to deliver many of his blue goods, instead Pierre had to pay 1 income to Marc-Andre for each blue delivery. At this time he only had 4 shares when the other players had at least 11 or 12 shares.

At this point we conceded victory to Marc-Andre but there many interesting fights left. Second place player is still the winner of the losers ! Even in this situation we were all trying to do a good play and finish in a good position, that's a nother aspect of the game we like. The Age of Steam China map is very challenging and I think it still a had a big potential for more plays. Even with contiguous network every game is different and you can use different strategy each time to win.

Final scoring:
Marc-André: 78
Pierre: 69
Laurence: 60
Mario: 49
Adrien: 46

Question: how did Adrien break-even after Turn 1? 2 shipments of 2 means his income was 4; his expenses at the least had to be 4 (2 shares, loco of 2). That can only mean that (a) he took no shares, (b) still managed to get Loco for his auction role, and (c) find a place to build enough track to get a 2-link passage.

If that DID happen, then I really need to play in your group!

Mario: 49
Adrien: 46

Thread: Age of Steam China session report

Martin arrived from work very late tonight but he was kind enough to allow us to play in his home. We were ready to go when he arrived late and even if he was tired after a 15 hour shift he wasn't tired enough to skip an Age of Steam game. He asked us to play the easy Chinese map. This map has an history of headaches in our group. It's not easy and the interaction is great especially with 5 or 6 players. There were 6 players tonight for this game, Sophie, Mario, Nathalie, Pierre, Martin and Marc-Andre.

The set up of goods was really good and there was many places where you could ship for income 2 in round 1. Mario builded first with urbanization near Peking, Martin started in Hong Kong, Sophie used the new city of Mario, Pierre began his build in northeast, Nathalie went to the southwest and finally Marc-André went in the center between mario and Martin. In second round Marc-André won loco with his turn order and tried a low share strategy and it could have been a terrific start but Mario blocked him in a town near Sian and Marc-André had no exits from Sian. After 4 rounds he only had 4 tracks but with 8 or 9 shares less than the other players he was still in the game and was one of the leaders. Mario's position was very difficult since he was blocked by Pierre and Sophie and he couldn't connect Peking. He had to bid very high for loco in two consecutive rounds but he also had to take more shares for this. Martin seeemed cornered near Hong Kong but he found a way to finish a loop that followed the China Sea and he was back in the game. In the north Pierre had to take first build several times because he was afraid of being blocked in his corner. Pierre and Sophie had nice loops in the north and they had many goods to ship at 5 income. Game was very close at the end but Sophie had to urbanise on her network and Pierre could build enough tracks to win.

Game was played very fast even with 6 players. Interaction was great and the strategies used in this game were original. No players was able to ship for 6 income, I don't remember that this ever happened before. Even if we played this scenario several time ths year we still find new way to win.

Final scoring:
Pierre: 55
Sophie: 51
Martin: 50
Mario: 37
Marc-André: 35
Natahlie: 27

Thread: Age of Steam South America

El Presidente map's was our choice for tonight's game with Nathalie, Martin, Pierre and Adrien. New rules on this scenario are quite simple and explanations were not very long to give.

Set up of goods on the map was awful and initial betting round went very high because players wouldn't want to play last and have income 0 since there was only spot that could allow shipping for income 2. Pierre won the first bet and choose urbanization and began his network from La Paz. Adrien choose the northeast region, Martin the southwest and Nathalie the southeastern region around Buenos Aires to begin. Martin and Nathalie had very strong start and they were the first to ship for 4, 5 and 6. Nathalie had a linear network that crossed the Andes, Martin made very nice loops in the west and connected Buenos Aires early. Pierre's start was bad and he lost some income because he couldn't pay El Presidente for his shipping, so he later choose El Presidente action to get a break and collected some cash that helped him get back in the game. But it was too late and Martin had many goods to ship at income 6.

Game was very exciting until the end. Interaction was great and almost all of the maps was used except for the expensive mountains. El Presidente was very important in this game since everybody was short in money and each dollars was important in the end.

Final scoring:

Martin: 97
Pierre: 91
Nathalie: 80
Adrien: 52

Thread: Age of Steam Sudamérica - Full of pictures

In english: http://tinyurl.com/qmao8
-------------
Age of Steam en Sudamérica

JUGADORES:

* César: azul
* Gabriel: rojo
* Francisco: amarillo
* Mario: verde

No

FINAL CORREGIDO:
Se consideran los siguientes factores:

* La imagen de arriba refleja que se hizo la siguiente operación: puntos+tramos-acciones (recuerdo que yo terminé con 29 puntos, antes de la reducción de 4. Con la reducción quedé en 25; y de 25 llego a 34 únicamente con esa fórmula).
* Tramos: Fco. 17, Mario 16, Gabriel y César 19
* Acciones emitidas: Fco. 10; César 12; Gabriel 8, Mario 7.

Entonces, a los puntos que aparecen en la foto superior se le sumaron las acciones, se le restaron los tramos de cada uno, se multiplicó por 3 y se agregaron tramos.

1. Gabriel: 94
2. Mario: 70
3. César: 70
4. Francisco: 65

Thread: Age of Steam China

It was a long time since we were able to have a quick decision about the AoS scenario we would play. We usually take 10-15 minutes befre reaching a decision about the right scenario. Everybody seemed ready for the China map.

Mario was able to start with his favorite start near Peking, Pierre in central east, Martin in south east and Marc in the south. Marc had many loco and urbanize in the first turns and he had a nice network with a big loop even if the costs are higher in the south. He wasn't able to connect the northern part of the map so he eventually ran out of goods to ship. Mario connected Peking early and he builded many loops aroud Peking and he had a great start. Pierre and Martin tried to reach Mario near Peking and we were able to block Mario 2 or 3 times so the game would stay close. For some rounds we tought Mario wouldn't win but he connected Russia and he had many goods to ship.

As expected China wasn't easy. Each region has advantages and disadvantages and you just have to study your region well. Great interaction as usual on this map.

Final scoring:
Mario: 96
Pierre: 89
Martin: 77
Marc-André: 74

Thread: Age of Steam South America

With 4 players tonight, we wanted to try the South America map. Lately, we often tried this map when we were three players. I always tought this map was better with 4 players since there is enough terrain for at least 5 or 6 players.

The first builds were different then the ones we usually have. Nathalie started along the east coast, Martin and Mario in the northeast region and Pierre near Buenos Aires. Mario was almost cornered by Martin and Nathalie in the second turn but there was an exit left in one of the city in the center of the map. This was all he needed to make a nice loop around Martin's network. Mario was able to upgrade his loco even when times were rough and he shipped at 5 and 6 inc. very early. Nathalie had a nice network and she connected Chile early but she had too many shares to compete for first place.

South America with 4 players is very different than with 3 players. The cost of the passing good through Buenos Aires is more important and El Presidente action becomes more important since he can collect more dollars since more players are shipping through Buenos Aires. Again this was a very close game with different strategy than our last games on this map.

Final scoring:
Mario: 85
Pierre: 81
Martin: 64
Nathalie: 57
Thanks, for the explanation.

As for blocking, you don't play with the people we do!

Ann

Ann
Yes, you can start tracks from 2 coastal cities but each one has to be contiguous to the coastal city. Both networks don't have to be connected but as in all games of Age of Steam, it's highly recommended to have a good chance of winning.

Your starting coastal city is free, if you want to start a second network from a second coastal city you'll have to pay for it.

We've played many many games on this map and I've had comments from many players and this situation (blocking Pekin) never occured. I don't really see why a player would spend so much to block other players only to receive some income from the other players during the shipment phase. I think it's always best to develop your network instead of trying to block other players. You'll win if you build rails, ship goods, build rails, ship goods.

Thread: Re: Age of Steam China Expansion

Pierre,

So I could build separate tracks from two coastal cities, each track connecting to inland cities, but the two tracks don't have to connect to each other at all?

If this is true for the second track must I pay for the second coastal city as well as the new inland city to which I connected?

Ann

P.S. It is a fun game but playing that all track must be contiguous enabled one player to block everyone else out of Peking and to win by better than a two to one margin.
