Thread: Is Atlantis Worth Buying? An Analytical Review

Today I just received a copy of Atlantis: Scenarios and Variants, one of the last major scenario packs available from Kosmos that I don't already have. I purchased Siedler von Catan - Das Buch zum Spielen around two years ago, and knew that virtually everything in Atlantis would be the same. Regardless, I forked over around €20 on eBay and got a copy.

Bad Point: The first thing I noticed when I opened the box is that the components were very limited. No "WOW! Ten sheets of stuff for Catan!" feeling like I had when I opened the materials box for Das Buch. That is quite simply because Kosmos cheaped out in the number of materials they wanted to create for this scenario. If they had actually gone to the lengths with which they produced Das Buch, there would have been around 43 additional pieces with this, most of them relatively small. Instead, Kosmos decided to double-side print 3/4 hexes and 40/60 of the discovery chits. This makes combining scenarios/variants, something that I love to try, impossible unless you own two copies.

Good Point: The second thing I noticed is that these pieces are really thick. I mean, they make the Das Buch pieces look like rubbish (which they kind of are). This got me thinking in a different way that maybe Kosmos didn't do so bad, despite the cheaping out of quantity. Truly, I stacked the 5 Specialist cards from Atlantis beside the 6 from Das Buch, and an entire Atlantis card was above the Das Buch stack, they were that much thicker. Compared to my Mayfair hexes, the Atlantis hexes are about 1/3 thicker. This makes me very happy because some of my pieces have bent and frayed over time and I don't see that happening with these.

Bad Point: Although the now notorious 4x 10 Event card, 1x 11 Event card problem is now quite well documented and corrected in the latest Kosmos and Mayfair editions, it is still true to note that you do not actually receive a statistically perfect deck of Event cards. The odds of a player drawing a "10" card are higher than drawing a "4" card, even though they should be the same. Likewise, the odds of drawing an "11" card are the same as drawing a "2" or "12". This fact is really unfortunate. The second issue with the cards is that they are minuscule compared with the resource and development cards. You can almost stack two decks of Event cards side-by-side and be the same dimensions of a normal Catan card. I am glad that they fixed this in the later versions of the Event Cards. As it is, I think I may put these cards with my travel Catan game since they fit in the travel box. The only positive with the Event cards is that they seem to be the same quality as the rest of the cards from Catan.

Good Point: There is a new variant! That's right, when you get a box of Catan even if you own everything else available from Kosmos, Mayfair, and 999 Games, you will still get a new variant with new pieces...sort of. The new variant is actually not really new, just a variant. Under that definition, I would actually recommend you read most of the rules to the scenarios/variants as many of them are altered from other versions. But the technically new variant is "The City Walls" which is a recreation of the city walls concept from Catan: Cities & Knights. Basically, players don't start with walls, but draw from a limited pool. When the pool runs dry, the walls are gone. All other rules apply, but unless mixing this variant with other scenarios/variants, the walls remain standing. I think this is a very pleasant little variant for those who loathe the Robber. The one unfortunate factor is that the walls are very large and look best if you own the Kosmos version of Catan. They leave a lot of open space in the Mayfair version so players may want to keep the punch-circles to clean up the look.

Final Point: A scenario-by-scenario analysis of this expansion has already been done in another talk forum and I recommend people interested in this expansion read up there, too, before buying. As a completist, I try to find the good in this expansion. Personally, I am very happy with the quality of most of it, I love the artwork on the box showing Atlantis in eerie green twilight, and I think that it is an absolutely essential expansion if you don't have/want Das Buch. That being said, if you do own Das Buch, Catan: Seafarers, Catan: Cities & Knights, and Carcassonne - Traders & Builders, you really will not be getting much new in this. The new components you will get are 7 neutral City Walls (which could easily be replaced with 7 city walls from C&K) and 7 Castles. That's it. In other words, download the rules or a translation and use your Das Buch pieces and pieces from your other expansions. Even as a completist, I probably should not have bought this expansion for the price I paid. I'd put the limit at around $15 total (€12 or £10), nothing more.

Final review: 6/10

Sidenote: A copy of the German rules should be up shortly. I am translating the English rules now and they should be up in around a week or so.

Interesting.
That means that Kosmos have made two different versions. I assume they had a lot of the misprinted cards left over after Spiel '05 and so decided to dump remaining stock into this box.

It must be hard enough to know that you have bought a misprinted deck and it must be devastating to learn that could have bought perfect copy if you had opened the box first...

Somehow this doesn't sound like good customer service. I would still complain to Kosmos if I had received a set matching my original misprinted set.

Sorry to hear that.

In that case have they made at least two different print runs and sold you the wrong one.

Now, this begs the question of whether they have actually stated in your rules (page 3) that the 'Nachbarschaftshilfe' should have "2x "10"".

Because if your copy of the rules is identical to mine and says "1x "10", 1x "11"" - then you are entitled to a replacement, which I am sure you can get by contacting Kosmos.

Like I said, most of this stuff can be found in Das Buch, which is readily available from online retailers and maybe even your local game store.

The only really new stuff is the Event Cards and the Great River -- the latter of which is available from Mayfair in Games Quarterly Magazine #10.

Thread: Translations, comparisons, and a brief review

I was fortunate enough to have a friend pick up a copy of Atlantis: Szenarien & Varianten for me. I'm a total Catan freak, and I love having all sorts of crazy expansions. I actually gave this to my wife as a birthday present, since she's also a big Catan fan.

This will be quite different from my (or anybody's) normal reviews, for a couple of reasons. First, I have not played any of these variants. Second, if you're reading this, and are actually interested in picking this set up, then (let's be honest) you probably already own Das Buch, and as such, already own 70% of this set.

What I am going to do is review the components of the set itself, provide translations of the variants, and offer comparisons with the Das Buch (or other original) versions. I'll also give a brief review of the set as a whole. I'll do the reviewing first, and then end this post with the translations/comparisons, as that section will be quite lengthy.

-----

COMPONENTS

-----

Atlantis comes in the same large, flat Kosmos box that the Historical Scenarios do. Inside is a divider that fills a third of the box on either side, leaving a 1/3-sized compartment in the center. For pieces, you get the rulebook (8"x 11"), two sheets of bits made of super-thick cardstock (one sheet is box-sized, the other closer to the size of the rulebook), 1 plastic Ziploc bag for storing your bits in once they've been punched out, and a shrink-wrapped deck of cards (of the small size.)

After punching everything out, the final parts manifest looks like this:

1 desert hex
1 jungle hex (river hex on back)
1 volcano hex (river hex on back)
1 wizard's castle hex (river hex on back)
1 "1-and-6" number token
1 Harbor Master 2-VP card
5 Specialist cards
6 castle tiles
7 city wall discs
60 stormflood tokens (30 with red backs, 30 with gold backs)
38 event cards

(I also kept the 6 cardstock circles that punch out of the center of the castles; I like to keep extra bits like that for future use.)

As I mentioned before, the cardstock is thick. Very thick. I don't know if the current Kosmos edition uses the same stock, but I would guess that it does. I'm just very impressed by the quality of the pieces. The artwork has been redone to fit the current Kosmos edition of Settlers, though the 3 new tiles from Das Buch retain their original artwork. The event cards (one of which is just a "cover" card) are tiny, but seem of decent quality. Overall, I love the pieces; the quality of the cardboard bits alone almost makes this a worthwhile purchase, in my mind.

The only sad part is, all of the bits, excluding the cards (and maybe even those) can fit into that single plastic bag. You put that into the box with the 10-page rulebook and think, "Wow, that's all I get?"

-----

A BRIEF REVIEW

-----

I like the bits. I think you get that. I've not played with any of the variants as written, other than having played other scenarios that used volcanoes and jungles. But they look decent.

ATLANTIS looks the weaker cousin of Das Buch's STORMFLOOD scenario, but faster. Interesting.

EREIGNISSE AUF CATAN ("Events on Catan") doesn't intrigue me too much; the idea of a "deck of dice" never did anything for me, and some of the events seem pretty powerful. Could be fun, though.

IM DSCHUNGEL ("In the Jungle") and VULKANE AUF CATAN ("Volcanoes on Catan") add 2 new terrain types to the game, which I have used in other scenarios and enjoy. VULKANE uses the "gold variant" that I prefer.

DIE SPEZIALISTEN ("The Specialists") is quite similar to the Das Buch scenario of the same name, one I like.

DIE STADTMAUERN ("The City Walls") just adds the city walls from Cities & Knights. A nice touch, I suppose, but redundant.

BURGEN AUF CATAN ("Castles of Catan") sounds slightly better than its Das Buch counterpart, and the bits are very nice; I'd like to give this one a shot sometime.

DER GROSSE FLUSS ("The Great River") has me perhaps the most excited about the set. The special tile was available only at Essen (I believe) and so its inclusion here is very nice. It's actually printed on the backs of 3 other tiles, which I'm not thrilled about, but it's kind of neat at the same time.

DER HAFENMEISTER ("The Harbor Master") is a new 2-VP card that rewards the acquistion of harbors. I really dig this, and I'd love to try it.

DIE MAGISCHE 7 ("The Magic Seven") never sounded good to me. The new hex is cool, but completely unnecessary, and the variant itself sounds way overpowered. It's neat to have a second wizard's castle hex, though.

-----

Overall, this set is really only for two kinds of people: (1) those who know German, and don't have Das Buch, and (2) those who have Das Buch but must have every expansion for Settlers that they can get their hands on. I fall into the second category, and even then, I wouldn't pay much more than $25-$30 for it. At that price it's about worth it just for the high-quality pieces.

One thing I do like about all the variants is that it looks like you can play all of them together. It might be a mess, but it's certainly a possibilty. I'd love to try it sometime, but I doubt I'll be able to convince anyone else.

-----

TRANSLATIONS & COMPARISONS

-----

ATLANTIS
Scenario for basic Settlers

COMPONENTS:

1 desert hex
60 "stormflood" chips

RULES:

Setup: Replace one of the pasture hexes with the second desert hex. When constructing the island, put both deserts in the central (longest) row of hexes, one at each end. Remove a "3" from the number chips, and then randomly place one of each number on the outer ring of hexes, skipping the deserts. Randomly place the rest of the numbers in the island interior. Red numbers ("6" and "8") may not be placed next to one another.

When a number is rolled during the game, after handing out resources, place a storm chip on a hex with that number which borders the sea. Once one of the outer hexes receives 5 chips, it "sinks" and is removed from the game; any roads or settlements no longer touching land are lost. Inner island hexes sink after taking on 3 chips. Desert hexes never sink. The Robber flees to the desert once the hex he's on beomces one chip away from sinking; he can also never be moved to a hex that is one away from sinking.

The game ends when a player gets 10 points on his turn, or once a certain number of hexes have sunk (7 hexes for 3 players, 8 hexes for 4 players.)

DIFFERENCES FROM DAS BUCH:

The biggest difference is that the Atlantis version is more specialized; the Das Buch version is listed as a "variant" (not a "scenario") and includes rules for Settlers, Seafarers, and up to 6 players. There are no specialized setup rules for the Das Buch version.

In Das Buch, all hexes sink after 7 storm chips. Das Buch comes with 100 chips, rather than 60.

Also, in Das Buch, the Robber may remain on a hex until it sinks before moving back to the desert.

EREIGNISSE AUF CATAN (EVENTS ON CATAN)
Variant for Settlers, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights

COMPONENTS:

38 cards (of one which is merely a "cover" card)

RULES:

This is the exact same deck that is available by itself, down to the misprinted card. Head to its separate entry on BGG for more info: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/20038

IM DSCHUNGEL (IN THE JUNGLE)
Scenario for Settlers and Seafarers

COMPONENTS:

1 jungle hex
30 red chips (back of half the stormflood chips)

RULES:

Basic Setup: Layout the island as usual, then replace the highest-numbered (besides "6" or "8") pasture hex with the jungle hex. The Robber starts the game on the jungle hex.

The jungle hex produces red "discovery" chips. Each discovery chip can stand in for a resource card when purchasing a Development card.

DIFFERENCES FROM DAS BUCH:

Though this is not listed in Das Buch as a separate variant, it is part of the "Desert Raiders" scenario, and plays exactly the same. The only new aspect of the Atlantis version is the new setup rules.

VULKANE AUF CATAN (VOLCANOES ON CATAN)
Variant for Settlers, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights

COMPONENTS:

1 "number 5" volcano hex

RULES:

Setup: Replace a desert hex with the volcano hex before setting up the map. Players may not place starting settlements on the volcano.

If a "5" is rolled, the volcano produces "gold" as in Seafarers. Then the volcano erupts! Roll a die: lava flows to that corner of the hex. A settlement hit by lava is destroyed. A city hit by lava is reduced to a settlement. If a player has no settlements to replace their city with, the entire city is lost.

DIFFERENCES FROM DAS BUCH:

The first noticeable difference is that the volcano tile has a number pre-printed on it. The setup rules are also new. In Das Buch, the volcano hexes have a variety of uses, but in the "Volcanoes" variant, volcano hexes produce nothing. (Though www.universityofcatan.com lists an optional "gold variant" that works the same as the Atlantis version.)

DIE SPEZIALISTEN (THE SPECIALISTS)
Variant for Settlers, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights

COMPONENTS:

5 "Specialist" cards, one for each resource type

RULES:

Each player gets 1 "point" towards specialization in a resource per VP (in settlements/cities) per hex of that resource. So, for example, a player with 1 settlement on a grain/ore/sheep intersection would receive 1 point towards grain specialization, 1 point towards ore specialization, and 1 point towards sheep specialization. A player with a settlement on an ore/ore/grain intersection would get 2 ore points and 1 grain point. A player with a city and a settlement on a single ore hex would get 3 ore points. The first player to reach 4 "points" in a particular resource receives the "Specialist" card for that resource. Each Specialist card is worth 1 VP and gives its owner a free resource of that type when they roll the dice. Specialist cards always go to the player with the most "points" in that resource; if there's a tie, nobody gets it.

The game ends when a player reaches 12 points, or acquires 4 Specialist cards.

DIFFERENCES FROM DAS BUCH:

This plays out exactly the same as the Das Buch variant (which has the same rules as the Das Buch scenario) minus the gold-specialist card.

The Atlantis variant is actually closer to the Das Buch scenario than it is to the Das Buch variant. The Das Buch scenario has you play to 15 points, whereas Atlantis has you play to 12 points regardless of which game you're combining the variant with (I question this, as Cities & Knights normally plays to 13. I would assume they intend you to add an additional 2 VPs to the winning condition.) Also, the Das Buch variant details 3 setup rounds, a maximum of 2 special VPs for building on a "new" island, and ignoring rolls of "7" during the first round. Atlantis mentions none of these, all around a much more streamlined variant.

DIE STADTMAUERN (THE CITY WALLS)
Variant for Settlers and Seafarers

COMPONENTS:

7 city wall discs

RULES:

Essentially, this variant adds the city walls from Cities & Knights to other games. They cost 2 brick and each allows an additional 2 resource cards to be safely held in hand.

DIFFERENCES FROM CITIES & KNIGHTS:

The biggest difference is that, instead of each player having 3 walls of their own, there is now a pool of 7 that all players can use. Also, Atlantis specifies that walls do not protect cities from volcanoes. Finally, Atlantis says to play to 11 points, though I find this questionable since most Seafarers scenarios go to 12 -- I assume they intend you to add 1 VP to the winning conditions of whatever expansion you're playing.

BURGEN AUF CATAN (CASTLES OF CATAN)
Variant for Settlers and Seafarers

COMPONENTS:

6 castle tiles

RULES:

Upon playing a second Soldier card, a player may put both Soliders at the bottom of the Development deck in order to build a castle on a hex adjacent to one of their settlements or cities. The castle tile is placed around the number token (a neat touch!) and makes it so the Robber cannot be moved to that hex. However, a castle cannot be built on a hex that currently has the Robber on it.

DIFFERENCES FROM DAS BUCH:

These variants are essentially identical, except that in Das Buch, each player has 1 castle of their own which they can build. In Atlantis there is a common pool of castles, and players can build more than one.

DER GROSSE FLUSS (THE GREAT RIVER)
Variant for Settlers, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights

COMPONENTS:

3 river hexes (back of the jungle, volcano, and wizard's castle hexes)
30 gold chips (back of half the stormflood chips)

RULES:

Basic Island Setup: Remove a mountain hex, hills hex, and desert hex from the game. When building the island, the swamp hex (with the river delta) must border the sea, with both edges of the delta touching ocean hexes. Place the hills river hex next to the swamp, and the mountain river hex next to that. When placing number tokens, the swamp hex receives none. Starting settlements may not be placed on the swamp. The Robber starts the game in the swamp.

When placing a settlement or road on one of the three river hexes, you receive a gold chip. A settlement at the point of the river delta is worth 2 gold chips. 3 gold chips are worth 1 VP. In Seafarers, boats along the river hexes garner gold chips, but the chip must be returned if the boat is moved away. In Cities & Knights, placing a knight does not gain you a gold chip.

Play to 12 points. (Again, I must assume they mean you to add 2 VPs to whatever expansion you're playing.)

DIFFERENCES FROM ESSEN TILE:

The "Grosse Fluss" was available at Essen in 2005. The main difference is that the Essen river is a single tile with 3 hexes on it, whereas the Atlantis river is 3 separate tiles. Also, the Essen tile has a gold icon at the point of the river delta, to symbolize the extra chip that space provides; its Atlantis counterpart is missing this graphic, though the rules are the same.

The rules are essentially the same, though there has been some confusion translating the Essen tile: the question is if roads built across the river count towards gold chips. The confusion comes from the fact that the Essen tile is a single tile, and the rules specify that roads need to be built "on the edge" -- the edge of the tile? Or the individual hexes? There's no confusion with the Atlantis version, as each hex is its own tile, so roads across the river are definitely worth a gold chip.

DER HAFENMEISTER (THE HARBOR MASTER)
Variant for Settlers, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights

COMPONENTS:

1 "Harbor Master" 2-VP card

RULES:

This is another 2-VP card, like the "Longest Road" or the "Largest Army", but this card rewards the acquistion of harbors. A settlement on a harbor is worth 1 "harbor point"; a city on a harbor is worth 2 "harbor points". The first player to reach 3 harbor points gets the "Harbor Master" card and the 2 VP that go with it. A player who achieves more harbor points than the current Harbor Master takes the card and becomes the new Harbor Master.

Play to 11 points. (Again, I question the 11 VP condition, as both Seafarers and Cities & Knights require more VPs for a win. I will assume playing with the Harbor Master adds 1 VP to the requirements for victory.)

DIFFERENCES FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS:

None. This card has been available online at Klaus Teuber's site. This is first time (to my knowledge) that an actual, tangible card has been made available.

DIE MAGISCHE 7 (THE MAGIC SEVEN)
Variant for Settlers, Seafarers, and Cities & Knights

COMPONENTS:

1 wizard's castle hex
1 "1-and-6" number token

RULES:

Setup: Replace the desert hex with the wizard's castle hex and place the "1-and-6" number token on it. (With Seafarers, replace any hex of your choice.)

When a "7" is rolled, if one die shows "1" and the other shows "6", then the wizard's castle hex produces Development cards before the Robber is moved. A player with a settlement on the wizard's castle hex takes 1 Development card, a city on the hex garners its owner 2 Development cards, etc. As usual, cards cannot be used on the turn in which they're received. The Robber may not be placed on the wizard's castle hex.

Play to 10 VPs. (I assume, with Seafarers and Cities & Knights, you should play to the normal VP requirement of whatever scenario you're using.)

DIFFERENCES FROM DAS BUCH:

None, really. The only difference I can spot is that Atlantis makes no provision for where the Robber starts, in the absence of a desert hex -- so I would assume that he starts off the board. Das Buch specifies that the Robber begins on the "2" hex in such a case. Also, Das Buch makes no mention of the score required to win.

Thread: Re: Anything to report?

James,

Many of the scenarios in "Atlantis" are re-makes of the Das Buch scenarios re-done so that they will match with the new style of the German game released by Catan GmBh.

The Ereignisse aus Catan is a deck of 37 cards mirroring a perfect set of 36 dice rolls. One card is a "new Year" card that is placed 5 cards from the bottom of the deck, so that one never knows which numbers will not be 'rolled'. There are a few random events printed on the cards to make it a bit more variable.

The Grosse Fluss is also included. This was released as a freebie from the Catan Shop (which still does not ship to the USA)

It also includes the Master Trader card (2 VP). This is available as a free download from Teuber's site.

--JP

I'm hoping someone will review this product soon. I'd like to see what changes were made in some of the variations/scenarions from Das Buch, and what the new ones are like. It seems quite difficult to obtain in America outside of eBay, unless it's good enough for Mayfair to import one day. But I might pay the shipping charges eventually if I can get English translations... and if I ever get bored with what I already have. Still working through Das Buch, and I have to be careful how much newness I subject my friends and family to each time we play Settlers!
