Thread: Re: Review 1850 roadrunner23t

I have played this game twice and enjoyed it quite alot. The charts and graphs really speed up play compared to 1870. I agree with you on the 8 10 and 12 trains can slow the game down but if you can control when they come out this can bankrupt other players and help you win the game

Thread: Review
A quick review after two games.

1850 is a follow-on to 1870 (actually as I understand it--1850 was developed first but released later) and shares many of 1870's characteristics: there is stock redemption, price protection and the soft-ledge on the SPI. Unlike 1870 companies will ordinarily only get 1 yellow tile/upgrade per round save the first round they operate (but see below).

Game board is the area north of 1870: the Chicago area and the Northern/Midwest plains (St. Louis in the South to Duluth in the North).

If there is a McGuffin in this game it's in the private companie--many of which allow additional tile plays during an operating round. In combination the tile laying privates are quite powerful--so don't make our mistake of letting someone have both the Gant Brothers private ($30 to make an extra tile lay each turn) and the Western Land Grant Co. (3 free tile lays). Our initial impression is that the Gant Brothers private is too cheap--the tile laying companies (including the Gant Bros) last until phase six--if their tile lays haven't been used (which is always in the case of the Gant Bros). It's going to take a few more plays to see whether our intial impression is correct.

In terms of development--as is often the case with 18xx games the best development happens early near the biggest city (Chicago in 1850). the chicago area companies (Burlington/Milwaukee Road/CRIP & MoPac) can all get into Chicago quickly and have solid early, mid and late game options. In an effort (I think) to promote expansion away from Chicago 1850 has "West Edge" off-board bonuses for most of the companies. The are similiar to destinations in 1870 in that they double the value of the off-board location to the company running there (though it requires a $50 special token to get the bonus). Unlike 1870 there are no destination runs--a few companies: the UP and the KATY can hit their west edge tokens early--but at a cost of probably not getting to Chicago until late. There has also been early development in the north edge of the map in our games where the Masabi range in combination with the Mesabi private (provides tokens that allow access to/through the Mesabi space) allows the Great Northern to generate some money early. However, the GN's long term prospects aren't as good as the Chicago-area RRs noted earlier.

So far no company has emerged as "the" company to start first (a la LPS in 1856 or MoPac in 1870). But of course two plays is not enough to make that determination. Currently the Burlington (starts in Chicago) seems to be the "best" early company--but if it is the "best" it's not the best by much.

1850, like 1870 suffers from 10-train-itis. There is one less 2 train (6 in 1850 v 7 in 1870) so the early game is a tad faster but the mid-game gets bogged by 8 and 10-trains--the faster early game means that overall it is a little faster than 1870 just not by much. I suspect that our future games of 1850 will use the 1830 diesel variant (8/10's gone and 12's become diesels) offered in the back of the 1850 rules manual.

Production values by Deep Thought Games are top notch (as usual). I think it is a solid addition to the 18xx game range especially for fans of 1870 but it is not going to knock 1856 off its perch as the best of the 18xx games.
