Thread: Space Crossbows and Catapults?

Help me out here people. There was a game from the 80's, much like Crossbows and Catapults, it used the same mechanics, (plastic discs shot from rubber band powered machinery) and it had a big robot dude that you had to blast pieces off of, and blocks that you built walls out of, just like C&C, except they resembled more like metal walls rather than stone blocks. It was space oriented, but I don't remember much more for details than that. Can anyone help me remember the name of this game?

Thread: Here are the contents of the Grand Battleset

I own the BASE TOYS edition. As far as I know it is complete.

The contents include 12 blocks of each color. The photos included in the box art also show definitely only 12 blocks of each color.

If your edition is different you might have gotten 17 each color. If that is the case the contents vary from edition to edition.

Otherwise I agree with every other amount you list.

Heh. We (my brother, dad and friends) never played by the rules. We set each side up, then said "go!" and whoever knocked everything on the enemy's side over first won. It was far, far more amusing than the established rules.

And yeah, odds are someone got hit with all that shooting and scrambling for ammo "caroms" to reload.

Downside was getting overzealous and putting rubber bands that were too strong and breaking the crossbow and catapults. Broke the tail of the trojan horse, too. Weren't designed for rapid, repeated action. Which is a shame.

Actually, I'm from Australia, but thanks for the other compliments.

I grew up in Perth, Western Australia, so the title is correct with the 'Western' aspect. It was derived from the 'Quickest Gun in the West', but not from any old Australian legend.
Great post! What I find fascinating, (right after the joy of finding 'an old friend', and the slightly 'off-base' reasoning of a 7-year-old), is that even in New Zealand "The West" has a bit of a hold on the imagination of the good folks there.

I say this based on the title you gave for the article: Quickest Catapult in the West...as in Quickest Gun in the West, which is the Wild West, which is America in the 1800s...unless there is a New Zealand Legend along those lines that rings out about it.

Thanks for sharing your memories...and (ouch), your pain!

Thread: Quickest Catapult in the West

Way back in the 80’s when Pac-Man was going ‘Wokka-wokka’ and Transformers were on telly, my brother received ‘Crossbows and Catapults’ for Christmas. I was a little perturbed by this massive present my brother had, considering that the only thing of comparable size that I got was the Atari 2600, but this was a joint present and we had to share it. I refused to acknowledge joint ownership and claimed the Atari as my own, because it was obviously unfair that he get this other big present. Anyway, my twisted 7 year old logic is not the point here, but we played the be-jebus out of that play set, so much so that one catapult and a crossbow broke. Eventually we tired of having to share the destructive weapons during a game and it fell out of flavour, only to be stored in the ceiling.

Fast forward 20 years to the future and I am helping my brother move into his new home. I was given the duty of collecting all of his junk that was stored at our parent’s place, which included anything in the roof. After dropping off a non-descript box with the faded name ‘Sean’, I decided to start rummaging through his gear. Lo and behold I came across ‘Crossbows and Catapults’. A sudden surge of nostalgia coursed through my body as I yanked the mangled box out from underneath a plethora of equally mangled He-man figures and quickly flung the lid off.

Immediately, my hatred for those stupid blue barbarian caroms returned and I unceremoniously dumped the contents onto the floor. My brother walked past and I haughtily challenged him to ‘A Duel of Crossbows and Catapults to decide the Ultimate Champion of All Time’, or something to that effect.

After a brief scrounge to find some new elastic bands to replace the melted, crusty old ones stuck to the weapons of minor destruction, we excitedly set up our defences. My tried and true double-brick front wall went up quicker than their overly complicated interlaced concertina foundation, proving that my Vikings are again better than those worthless Barbarians.

Once everything was set up, I was confident that my tower would be un-topple-able behind my massive fortification. So much so that I even allowed my brother the first turn. Well, it was his game anyway.

My brother chose the catapult to start the offensive and placed it on the right side of his base. After testing the springiness of the new elastic bands he placed his first carom onto the catapult and drew back the arm. A few slight alterations to correct the angle towards my tower and he let go.

*Boink*

*Crash*

I couldn’t believe it. The fluky, jammy punk had won the game by knocking over my castle with the first shot of the game. What made it worse was the 20 years lack of practice. And worse still, he was claiming to be ‘The Ultimate Champion of All Time’. Obviously, I challenged him to a re match, but he refused, making some comment about trying again after two more decades.

Stupid game.

At least I still have my Atari 2600. Now where’s that Pac-Man cartridge?

‘Wokka-wokka’.
Thread: Big castle

I invented my own variant of this game based on the following simple rules.

One player gets to use all of the components to build a mega castle with all of the blocks, men, flags etc. The other person then just plugs away and works out how many shots it takes them to knock over every single one of the other person's pieces. Then you swap roles and whoever took the least number of shots wins the game. Sometimes it came down to wasting 5 or so shots at the end of the game to knock over the measly little flag at the corner of their area while the rest of the area was completely destroyed to oblivion!

This variant was also useful as I'd snapped a number of flags off at the base and lost a few men so it didn't matter anymore that I didn't have all of the pieces anymore.

I reckon it used to take me around 40 or so shots to wipe everything out!

Thread: Here are the contents of the Grand Battleset

Hey, if you're like me and found a Grand Battleset in terrible shape at the thrift store, you probably want to know what is included. Here, taken from an eBay auction and correct to the best of my knowledge, is what is included:

Game box
instructions
2 castle boards
2 towers
8 plastic men
2 catapults
2 crossbows
2 castle outposts
34 blocks (17 blocks each)
32 caroms (16 caroms each, two of which are "king" caroms)
10 flags (5 each)

Enjoy! Unfortunately, I myself am missing 2 grey blocks, 2 beige blocks, 9 blue barbarian caroms, 4 red viking caroms, 1 Catapult, and 2 red flags.

jeblucas wrote:
I remember very well the debates regarding proper wall-building. Me, I liked a sparse interlocking--I felt it had a chance against the crossbows as the wall would "bend" a little. It left me spare bits for placing as obstacles as well. I'm not sure we ever read the rules though--that might not be kosher.

C&C isn't exactly a heavy weight wargame. I don't think it really matters what the rules say, as long as your opponent accepts it as ok - its the rule. I remember that at my house if you knocked over your own tower bumping it - you lost.

Heh...fond memories of that game. I also had the Trojan Horse and the Battering ram. Wanted the Dragon but never could find one. Loved how the Trojan Horse dumped out all the ammo if it was hit on the release button. The Battering Ram would kind of explode if the carom smacked the shield dead center. Good times...

Thread: 30 year olds and plastic weapons

“You do not have crossbows and catapults.”
“I do,” I respond, “With a majority of the useful pieces.”
“Oh, we’re breaking that s*** out!”
I then proceed to dig through the trunk of ‘games I’ll probably never play again – risk, clutch football, worst case survival game, broadside, et al. I find my bucket with the remaining pieces of C&C: both towers, both crossbows, both catapults, most of the wall pieces and about five caroms each. (Plus, one Viking and two barbarians).
So we choose up sides. Gabe and Grant versus Andrew and I. Neither Gabe nor Andrew had ever played the game; so, they choose to be the catapult men. The catapult always seemed cooler even tho the crossbow was so much effective of a weapon. We rearrange the library and go to work. 2-on-2 causes a great many differences of opinion about setting up the wall.
Once such discussions have been settled, it’s time to play. Now, a play by play would be dull. But, Gabe and Andrew quickly see the relative effectiveness of the crossbows. Yet, nothing is achieved outside of destroying the walls (and rather quickly – I don’t think it matters how you build the wall; one shot from close by the crossbow and its done.) Then, Andrew takes our catapult shot. Lo and behold, from about ten feet he hits the top of the tower on the fly the tower goes down.
Grant and I both express it: “Wow.”
“Oh we’re going again!”
We rebuild the walls and on about our fifth turn, Andrew knocks down the Barbarian tower again with a similar shot.
“He’s the greatest catapulter I’ve ever seen!”
“I wish I had this as a kid”
“I think the rubber band on mine sucks”
Our audience announces we have to leave cuz doors for the show are opening now and Ricky’s band is playing first.
“Hang on, I have to change pants, my knees got really dirty!”
Thread: A great way to commit random acts of violence!

I have many fond memories of playing this game when I was wee, and probably a few scars under my hair line too...
I saw a set for sale on eBay and it got me thinking, whatever happened to my Crossbows & Catapults?! Answer: the folks stole it away from me before someone got permanently injured...

The crossbows and catapults in the game are harmless, so parents have no fear! It's just that - well, what would start off as an accidental misfire would slowly escalate to all players forgetting about the castles and barbarian figures, and instead taking refuge behind the sofa and hurling plastic pucks at each other. If we had put a little more thought into it, I am sure we could have created a scoring system, where black-eyes or broken decor would translate into points, but we were generally too busy ducking or grabbing more ammo...

Or maybe it was just me and my hooligan friends who did this???

I loved this game as a kid - and recently found my old set. It was fun to read your review; I completely agree it is a great gateway game. I play with the pieces with my 2 year old all the time. Currently it is more "Smash the castle" - but over time I am sure that will change...

Thanks for the review.
Thread: A great game for introducing kids to miniature battles.

Overview & Game Introduction
I was an avid Warhammer 40K player when I was in high school in the 1980s but I have to say that the “gateway game” for me when it came to miniatures games was definitely Crossbows and Catapults. The basic premise of this game is that there are two factions (the Vikings and the Barbarians) that are waging war on each other. In this two-player game, each player assumes the role of “commander” of one side of the conflict. The players have to defend their tower while simultaneously attacking the opponent with siege weapons.

What You Get
The basic introductory set of Crossbows and Catapults included the following game components:

Caroms: Each side comes armed with a ten plastic caroms (red for Vikings, blue for Barbarians). Caroms are shot out of the siege engines and represent the warriors for each side. Each side has one “king” carom with special abilities described later.

Crossbows: Crossbows are used to fire caroms along the ground. Each side is armed with one crossbow.

Catapults: Catapults are used to launch caroms in the air. Each side is armed with one catapult.

Castle Cards: Each side has a cardboard card approximately one foot square. This card depicts a castle courtyard surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge. In the middle of the card is a secret treasure; at the beginning of the game each player places his or her tower on top of the secret treasure to conceal it.

Towers: Each side has a plastic tower that stands about six inches high. This is the focal point of each side’s castle.

Blocks: Each side received 12 blocks that are set up on the castle card any way the players want at the start of the game. The blocks are used to defend your tower and you attack your enemy’s blocks with your caroms.

Warriors: Each side has five plastic warriors that are used as markers for spies and to mark the location of the king carom.

Flags: Each side has five stand-up plastic flags. Four are used to mark the boundaries of your castle grounds and the fifth goes at the top of your tower.

Game Play
This game is intended to be played on the floor in an area six feet long by five feet wide. Each player puts his/her castle card in the center of either end of the six-foot long area with the drawbridge facing the other player. The rectangular area extending from the front edge of the castle card to the sides of the five-foot wide area and behind are the boundaries of each player’s castle grounds. A flag is placed on each of the four corners of the castle grounds. Each player places their tower on top of the secret treasure printed on the castle card and then place the fifth flag at the top of the tower. Players now construct a wall on the castle card out of the blocks to protect the tower.

Players now take turns firing caroms at one another. Each player fires one carom per turn and chooses whether to use their crossbow or their catapult. Caroms being shot for the first time must be shot from within your own castle grounds. If a carom lands in the area not taken up by the opposing player’s castle grounds that carom remains in that spot and may be launched from that spot on the next turn.

If a carom lands within your opponent’s castle grounds in any location other than the courtyard or drawbridge it is captured by your opponent and becomes a prisoner. Prisoners may be placed inside the tower of the capturing player (which help greatly as they weight down the tower and make it harder to knock over).

If a carom lands on your opponent’s drawbridge it stays there and may be shot from that location the next turn. If a carom lands on the courtyard portion of your opponent’s castle card it is replaced with a plastic warrior figure and the carom is returned to the player that fired it. This warrior figure is now a “spy.”

If you hit one of your opponent’s caroms outside of his/her castle grounds with one of your caroms then you may take the carom you hit as a prisoner. The only exception to this are the two king caroms. The kings may capture non-king caroms but only a king may capture another king as a prisoner. Even if an opposing non-king carom inadvertently strikes a king carom the non-king carom is still taken prisoner.

If you somehow knock your opponent’s flag from on top of his/her tower that opponent returns the carom that you used to knock over the flag to you as well as one prisoner (if any exist). The flag is then immediately placed back at the top of the tower.

Victory Conditions
A player can win a game of Crossbows and Catapults in one of four ways:

1. Topple your opponent’s tower.
2. Capture all of your opponent’s caroms as prisoners.
3. Have one of your caroms touch your opponent’s secret treasure.
4. Have four spies in your enemy’s courtyard.

Review
While experienced miniatures gamers will certainly not be attracted by the relative simplicity of this game when compared to games like Warhammer 40K or Warmachine this game, as I mentioned earlier, is a great gateway game for getting kids interested in miniatures games.

The fact that this game is played on the floor is innovative and fun but does require enough space to do so. I would suggest playing this game on a carpeted floor with relatively low-pile carpet. Shag would make the crossbows almost useless and firing the caroms across a smooth tiled floor would make the game relatively easy and also have a high propensity towards denting your baseboards.

The free-form nature of this game should appeal to most children. Whereas most games are more rigid in their structure, this game opens itself up to customizations and encourages imagination. Other obstacles can be placed in the “no man’s land” area and liberties can be taken with the dimensions of the game, as well. I won’t even go into the multitude of ways that Lego could be used to create fun and imaginative customizations to this game.

This game is at its essence a game of area control and is a good precursor to games with strategic elements. The game also teaches rudimentary concepts of physics. The siege weapons use rubber bands to achieve the tension required to launch the caroms and they have several different notches onto which the rubber bands can be attached so players will need to learn what it means to adjust their tension.

Parents of particularly young children should be cautious with this game. While the caroms are smooth and rounded they do have a significant heft to them and the whole point of the game is to launch them through the air at your opponent. In short, be there for when your kids decide to start throwing them at each other’s heads instead of the plastic bricks and towers.

The variety of victory conditions also enable this game to be handicapped well. For example, adults playing against children may want to even the playing field by saying that the child wins if he/she meets any of the victory conditions but the adult can only win if all four are met.

I would highly suggest this as a great starter game for getting kids to think outside of the box when it came to games. Adults may get a kick out of this game at first but those looking for a robust game of strategy should probably look elsewhere.

Note: this review only covers the components of the base set of Crossbows and Catapults. There were a variety of expansions for this game produced which I will cover in a separate review.
