Thread: Nice little game

John Silver is a little card game from Eggert Spiele. Eggert's biggest hit is probably "Antike" - which is much bigger, more complex, and intricate than this game, but you'll want to put this one there as well.

The game consists of a deck of 44 cards, three "type" cards and two sets of four "character" cards. One set of characters are to be placed on the table; the other set can be placed in front of each player. The neat thing about these cards is that the reverse side has a rule summary; one set is all in German, the other side is all in English. They're the same on the front side - so use the set you like and put the other on the table. (By the way, the publisher provides full-color English rules as well.)

The table layout is as follows. Lay out one of each character card in a row along the top; place each type card (treasure, pirate, ship) along the left edge.

Deal six of the 44 cards to each player.

The mechanism is simple: play a card, score if appropriate, draw a card. When the draw deck is exhausted, players play until there is no legal play left; any incomplete rows are discarded.

The cards have numbers and types. There are three suits, corresponding to the three types (treasure, pirate, ship). The numbers range from 1 to 13; the symbols are one or more gold coins, apples, or black marks. In addition, there are five "joker" cards numbered 5 1/2, 6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8 1/2 and 9 1/2, which each have two black marks and can be any type.

A card play consists of placing a card under one of the four characters in the corresponding row and drawing a replacement card. Note that there is only one row for each type: all treasure must be played to the "treasure" row, all ships to the "ship" row, and so forth. Whenever a player places a card with apples on it into a row, s/he can (instead of drawing from the deck) pick up any card on the board that has either coins or black marks (but not apples).

A joker card can be placed anywhere on the board, and becomes the type of the row in which it is placed.

Whenever the fourth card is placed in a row, the row is scored and all cards are removed. First, place the second-highest valued card on top of the highest card; then place the second-lowest valued card on top of the lowest-valued card. This will mean that two cards will be given to two different characters. The row is then empty; the player draws a replacement card and the game continues.

When all plays are made, any incomplete rows are discarded. Players then look at what they've acquired, and (ignoring the numbers now) separate their takings into three piles: coins, apples and black marks.
• coins are good. One point for each coin.
• black marks are bad. There's a penalty for most and second-most black marks. (With 2 players, they're just -1 point each.)
• apples are good . . . but they get passed to the player to the left, who counts them just like coins.

Most points wins. The entire game takes no more than 20 minutes (the box says 30 - that'll happen if analysis paralysis sets in.) For a simple game, there's a number of interesting strategic decisions; what you're trying to do is to get rows to score such that you get gold coins, other players get black marks, and the player to your right gets apples (to pass to you afterward). It's a little like some weird trick-taking game, but it's very clever - the jokers, the distribution of symbols, the apple thing which lets you pick up a card on the board instead of from the deck - there's a lot going on.

I played several good games at the Gathering, but of the light ones this was definitely my favorite. Small publisher, real nice guy (Peter Eggert) - support him and buy the game.

Walter.
