Thread: Letters from F/O G. Palmer to Mrs. E. Palmer, Stockport.

13.8.40

Mother,

It seems that the rushed-up training we've taken lately may be put to some use soon. The Huns dropped a few nasty bombs on Dover in a small hit-and run raid today. As luck would have it my squadron, and a squadron of Spits were on stand-by at [censored] very close by. Unfortunately, we stayed on the ground, unaware of the raid until the Huns were well on their way back to France. Group is going to have to get their act together soon, I would bet that things are going to get much hotter before long.

I must keep this short, I'm off to bed now.

Your loving son,

Geoffrey

____________________

14.8.40

Dearest mother,

What an eventful day! At practically first light Jerry was at it again, with a small low-level raid. My group, and a group of Spits scrambled from [censored] , and caught the raid up, diving from out of the sun just as they were dropping their bombs on Canewdon. Attacking the fighter top cover, the Spit group flamed a 109 straight away, and I, with my first shots fired in anger, sent another down in flames! It was too easy, the bugger never knew I was there until my bullets tore apart his engine and cockpit!

Taking a moment to catch my breath, I scanned the sky and spotted the bomber group 5,000 ft below. Picking out a Stuka at the tail end of the pack, I pushed over, picked up speed, and with a 6 second burst, put several bullets into his engine cowling. I dove through a cloud of engine parts and tracers from the Stuka's tail gunner, and somehow came out on the other side, unscathed, lined up on a smoking Do 17 the Spits must have worked over!

Seeing the condition of the perspex around the Dornier's rear gun mount, I gambled that he was in no position to fight back. Clearing my tail, then taking careful aim, I fired a short burst into the Dornier's cockpit, and it immediately dove toward the ground 10,000 feet below. A quick scan of the skies turned up nothing but Hurricanes and Spits, so I watched the Dornier the rest of the way down, seeing it crash just east of Canewdon.

In case you weren't counting, that is 3 for your little Geoffrey! No one else put in a claim on the smoking Dornier, so I was awarded full credit. I don't know if I'll be able to stop replaying that flight in my head tonight, but I must try. It's been a long day, and I'm very tired.

Your loving son,

Geoffrey

____________________

Flight Officer Geoffrey Palmer was killed in combat with the enemy near Lympne on 15.8.40. After an early morning combat in which he shot down a Ju 88, Palmer's Hurricane was seen to explode while in combat with an Me 110. No parachute was spotted.

Thread: Working on adding Kanal Kampf expansion

Hi All,

I am working on adding a Homemade Kanal Kampf expansion covering, as the name says in German, the battle over the English Channel convoys that started July 10th 1940. He59's and He115's will patrol over the channel looking for convoys. Once sighted the Germans may launch raids on the convoys. While probably not as nail-biting as the battle over southern England, the Kanal Kampf will provide a new twist for London' Burning players. I am looking for input and testers for those interested.

Thanks

Thread: London's Burning in the General

I've just bought this, read the rules through a couple of times and am in the middle of my first game. As usual I'm angsting about getting the rules 100% correct, so the going is pretty slow!

I understand there is an example of gameplay in the copy of the General (31.2), a much fuller example than is included in the game rules.

Does anyone know if a copy of this example is available anywhere, posted on someone's website perhaps? I've had a scout round using Google but no luck so far. It would really help reassure me that I've got the rules right.

Thanks

Philibert,

You can only have 2 RAF aircraft in play at any time (even though it never seems to be enough...). If any other pilots or aircraft become available, they are placed in reserve, and only become active if one (or both) of your active pilot(s)/aircraft is lost. Any number of pilots and aircraft may be in reserve, but only 2 can be active at once.

Hope this helps!

I'm not 100% sure on this (and I don't have the rulebook with me right now), but I think the interceptor(s) even have to return to base in this case.

Remember however, that if a bomber's group real altitude is two levels apart from the interceptor, you might still be able to attack if the bombers have esorting fighters flying one altitude higher or lower than the bombers.

Yea,

The game was a tough one. I just finished the short scenario and I lost to the Germans 15 to 9. It's pretty damned easy to lose a airplane and/or pilot just about every time you engage a raid. Frankly, I lost by only so little because we had plenty of "no raid" phases.

Judd

Thread: Re: Rules Question

My reading of the rules is that pilots only need to undergo injury checks if they received a hit to the pilot position. So, in your particular situation, the pilot wouldn't roll for injury. It also seems that the only things that prevent you from recovering fatigue are base damage and being "shaken", which only occurs from the injury check. So, the pilots recover the normal two levels of fatigue. I think that the entirety of the punishment for bailing out is being grounded for the rest of the day and having to use one of your repair points to get a new plane.

Thread: Rules Question

Hi,

Just picked up an unopened copy of this and broke it out this evening. I've run up against a question regarding pilots. I don't think it is clear in the rules whether pilots that bail out (and do not die, of course) as a result of a destroyed aircraft (but whose aircraft did NOT recieve damage to the pilot location) need to undergo an injury check upon returning during the night phase. If no injury check is needed, do the pilots come back "rested" for the next day?

I've got a HUGE pilot problem. I lost two to the drink and one to the pine box during the first two days of fighting. I need to re-evaluate my strategy.

Judd
I wish people would use a craft knife to slice the counters first before just tearing them :-( ]

Anyways, help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Phil

Enjoyed your review Sean. Like you I love LB and enjoy it more and more every time I play.

If you haven't already seen it, have a go at adding the Defiant to the game which was in The General magazine not long after LB came out. I posted the counters (front and back) and the rules for including it in the Images Section of this LB page a year or two ago.

Nice little addition to a great, great game.

Tally Ho!

Tim

Thread: Londons Burning - Smoldering Stukas Dot the Countryside

London’s Burning
© 1995 The Avalon Hill Game Company
1 or 2 players (can support more though)
2+ Hours

London’s Burning is definitely another of my favorite games of all time. You play the part of the British airmen of the Royal Air Force (RAF) as they attempt to defend the skies over southern England from German bombing raids. London’s Burning is truly outstanding as one designed to be a single player game. As the British player you play through August until Mid September 1940 as the Germans attempt to grind London into dust. Each turn consists of 5 phases, 7 a.m. to night; during each a German raid is possible. Once it is determined there will be a raid (by random draw of counters from a container) the game system then determines the number of raiding aircraft (random draw), the raid’s estimated altitude (die roll), and its flight-path each impulse (die roll). The impulses are turns within the phase whereby the Brits and “Jerry” take turns maneuvering. The RAF looks to intercept and the Germans bomb the fist target they come across.

The Game really shines though in the combat portion. You almost feel like you are in a real dogfight as you roll the dice to see if you can outmaneuver your target to take a shot and the decisions of how long of an ammo burst to use (yes, ammo is limited!) or if you should charge head on at your target to increase the chance of a kill. There are advantages to diving from a higher altitude than your opponent and diving out of the sun. There are also disadvantages of having to climb to meet a target and having overly fatigued pilots. Hits are scored with die rolls. Your weapon’s rating determines what number is needs to be rolled to hit while the locations of scored hits is determined by a die roll. Two hits in any section of the aircraft destroys it. If a hit to the engine occurs the fighter loses altitude every impulse after combat and may crash before it can safely land. The more planes you shoot down the more skilled your pilots become, score 5 kills and your pilots attain ace status and become more deadly. You must be careful though…your pilots can get shot up and either die attempting to bail out or of their wounds once rescued.

I did get an opportunity to play the London’s Burning at a tournament in 2002 with the games designer Ben Knight. I must say it was the most fun I had playing during the whole week of gaming I engaged in. My RAF hurricane pilot was hit and survived to fight the next day on a 1 in 6 chance and made ace in a single afternoon (take that Reichsmarschall Goering!!)
I agree with the point about the remix chit. I think the chit method is the better and more accurate German force generation method for the game because while the Germans had so much air resources, there was a limit, and what showed up before gave you something of an idea of what you would see next...

I'm pleased you've joined the ranks of those who have discovered this gem of a game Ron.

Have a go next time with including the Defiant from The General article which came out not long after LB was released. I posted the rules and counter images for this in the images section a year or two ago. The Defiant is not the greatest but can come in handy when you have one of those games where the Luftwaffe is knocking your boys out of the sky rather quickly.

Tally Ho!

Tim

Thread: chits for dice

was reading a review on the web about this game and it was on about the dislike of the chit systenm for the raids.
it said you have an idea what was likely to come from what was already drawn.
true but that is why the remix chit is there !

a suggestion about changing it to a dice roll was an idea
so

1-3 = no raid
4 = 4 raider
5 = 5 raider
6 = 6 raider the easy way to do it and it does work.

this started me thinking about the scale of the game.
your figther is part of the rest of the squadron so there should be about 12 figthers in the same area ,o the german raids should number;
4 raider 96 aircraft
5 raider 120
6 raider 144
7 raider 168 (+1)
8 raider 184 (+2)

but wat about the smaller raid that came
this feels more like it to me ,the germans had a load of big raids
then regrouped but sent smaller raid to keep things moving
so try this

have two dice ,one big dice (big raid) and one small dice (small raid).
start with big dice roll for raid

BIG DICE
1-3 = no raid
4 = 4 raider
5 = 5 raider
6 = 6 raider (swap dice for next raid)

SMALL DICE
1 = 1 raider (swap dice for next raid)
2 = 2 raider
3 = 3 raider
4 -6 no raid

still add the london burning bounus

AMOS

Thread: London's Calling

I was looking forward to a nice solo war game and settled on London’s Burning. I had just won a copy off EBay in almost perfect condition and could not wait to jump in.

I decided to take the short game (due to time constraints) which would be over in 6 short days. My strategy was to try and not get my pilots shot down too early in the week or scramble too much in the mornings. Thus, I decided to let large raids bomb first and try to pick off bomb groups with little fighter coverage or only attack smaller reported raiders.

My starting pilots turned out to be Stone in a Spitfire and Drake in a Hurricane. I was happy to draw a Spitfire in my opening round as it is the only real match for the plentiful Me-109s I would see. Hurricanes are a good complement to take out the bombers, but head to head with the German fighters they need to make the first pass count.

My reserves are Clisby in a Spitfire and Palmer in a second Hurricane. I had yet another Spitfire to choose upon in case of a calamity, not a bad opening group.

I have set my home base back at Baggin Hill near London. I hope this will keep it from being bombed and give me time to scramble if the Luftwaffe decides to bomb it.

Note: the pictures used between the days are from the BGG database. I used them to break up the paragraphs and show parts of the game. If you like them, please click and give the original poster a thumbs up.

August 13th:
7:	No raids come over the channel.
10:	6 plane raid reported at Angels 15 (15,000 ft)
RAF scrambles but tails the group until they reach West Malling airfield. Raid consists of 4 - Me-109s, 1 - Me-110, and 1 JU-88.
RAF decides to not engage due to large fighter presence. With only one bomber the raid hits the Airfield for 2 points of Damage. They return unmolested back to France.
2:4 plane raid reported at Angels 10.
Again, the RAF scrambles and waits to see the final destination and composition before attacking. It turns out to be fighter sweep over the Home Radar Chain at Dunkirk. 3- Me-109s and 1 ME-110. Out numbered, the RAF turns back, while the Germans cause no damage to the Radar Chain.
5:	4 plane raid picked up at Angels 10. A nice target late in the day, I move to intercept.
I am unable to intercept before they attack the Dunkirk Radar Chain. One Me-110 dive bomber and a Ju-88 bomb the radar chain causing 2 damage points.
Two ME-109s provide cover. The RAF moves to intercept and catches them heading back out over the channel attacking from out of the sun.
COMBAT:
1st round:
Stone in his Spitfire Shoots down an ME-109 in his fist pass for 1st kill.
Drake in his Hurricane damages a 109 in its engine, but it bugs out and manages to make it back to France. One less fighter but no kill.
2nd round: Combat continues
With the fighter cover dispatched the RAF descends on the bombers. Stone downs a JU-88 with the last of his ammo for his 2nd kill.
A lone Me-110 is down at 5,000 ft and breaks off the engagement making it home safely… alone.

Night Phase:
Dunkirk radar repaired so there is no movement penalty to the RAF pilots when trying to scramble. Both pilots get rest and stay fresh. Both German aircraft put back into the mix and are ready for action the next day.

Notes:
Not a bad day, the only real damage was to the radar chain and it was fixed during the night phase. Also, my Spitfire pilot has racked up two kills which is moving him towards ACE status. If he makes it to ACE, even the deadly 109s will have something to contend with.

August 14th
7:	Again, no raid in the early hours.
10:	5 plane raid sighted at Angels 10.
Scramble but are not able to reach the raid in time. 2 Me-109s and a Me-110 cover 2 Do-17 bombers which cause 1 point of damage to Hawkinge. airfield. The bombers make it back safely without ever being attacked.
2:	5 plane raid coming in at ground level.
It makes it past the coastal cities and heads inland. The RAF is scrambled and intercepts the raid before it reaches the home base of Baggin Hill. With such a low altitude the RAF fighters dive out of the sun.
COMBAT:
1st Round:
Stone lines up an ACE Me-109 and riddles it with bullets, he watches it burst into flames in the first pass for his 3rd kill in the Spitfire.
The Hurricane hits a 109 once in the frame and also wounding the pilot causing it to bug out.
2nd round: Combat continues
The Spitfire finds a Me 110 and lines it up, he kills the pilot and it falls out of control from the sky, for yet another kill – his 4th. The enemy 110 rear gunner returns fire as its being hit and scores a hit on Stone. The lucky (or unlucky) shot hits the pilot compartment, wounding Stone forcing him to land.
Drake in the Hurricane kills the pilot of a Do 17 bomber and gets his first kill of the war.
With the Spitfire pancaked and the Hurricane out of ammo, the RAF breaks off combat. Heavy AA fire keeps the lone German bomber from doing any damage.
5:	No Raid

Night Phase:
Upon landing, the Spitfire pilot, Stone, is check out by the field doctors and is told that his wounds will keep him out of action for two weeks. Clisby, the reserve Spitfire pilot is called up and the West Malling airfield is fixed from the previous days bombing damage. Two German aircraft are added back into the mix.

Notes:
Wow, one kill away from being an ACE and Stone is hit by a lucky shot from a bomber. Such is the fate of war. The best laid plans are gone once the shooting starts!
The good news is that his plane was not damaged and I did not need to use any points to have it fixed, the bad news is that he is effectively out for the rest of the game.
I have also been luck that the bombing raids are doing little damage, thus I retain the ability to decide if I need to intercept early or wait to see the composition and true altitude before I attack.

August 15th
7:	Costal Command reports no raids.
10:	Radar Chain detects nothing.
2:	I set the RAF to patrol over Mansten since there has been no action. No Raid.
5:	Remix: Still, no raid.

Night:
I remove the only Damage to Hawkenridge and now all of England will have no damage.

Notes:
Wow, the Germans must really be afraid of my pilots. This looks like a landslide victory in the making here. My only real setback was the downing of my near-ace pilot. Still, I must remain on vigil; surely Herman Goering will not stand for this.

August 16th
7:	Again the Germans send no aircraft over enemy skies.
10:	6 plane raid at Angels 5, another low level bombing run.
No immediate scramble as I don’t want to risk running into a fighter sweep. Turns out the raid are full of bombers and the heavy bombing of Dover that ensues does 8 points of damage. With no planes in the air to intercept the German raid gets off without a shot being fired at it.
2:	4 plane raid spotted by Costal Command at Angels 10.
RAF fighters scramble to try and intercept. The German group reaches Hawkinge but only has one bomber in the attacking group. It bombs the target but is disrupted by Heavy AA and does no damage. RAF is unable to intercept.
5:	No Raid

Night:
Repair two points of damage from the burning blaze that is Dover. All fighters get rest.

Notes:
Wow, besides the one BIG BANG attack, we suffer low losses again. Pilots are not fatigued and things still look good.

August 17th
7:	Germans put no planes in the air.
10:	5 plane raid at Angels 10.
No immediate scramble. German planes pass the costal cities and roar towards London. RAF pilots scramble gain altitude and interception the raid one space before London.
Raid contains 3 Me-109s and 2 Do-17s but are only at 5,000 feet with one Me-109 flying top cover at 10,000 feet.
COMBAT:
1st round
Both RAF planes attack the Me-109 flying top cover. The Hurricane hits the top cover plane first, scores some frame hits, but does not destroy it. Then Clisby in his new Spitfire wracks the Me-109 with burst after burst and destroys it for his first kill.
2nd round: Combat Continues
In the second round, the two RAF pilots descent on the other two Me-109 planes flying close escort to the bombers. The Hurricane fails his performance check and is unable to get into firing position on his Me-109. The spitfire attacks his and causes a pilot and engine hit. The plane disengages but with its engine damage is unable to make it back to France, thus giving the Spitfire it’s second kill.
The Me-109 takes revenge on the Hurricane and riddles it with four hits. The plane barely holds together as it is hit at every possible place. The wounded pilot makes an emergency landing at his home base. Being badly wounded and trying to bring his plane in, he crashes his plane trying to land it and is instantly killed.
3rd round: Combat Continues
Alone, Clisby in his Spitfire press home the attack. Seeing his friends plane hit and uncertain of its outcome, Clisby lines up the last Me-109, fires his guns and sends the plane to its demise.
4th round: Combat Continues
The Spitfire closes in on the defenseless bombers and shoots down a Do 17 with the last of his ammo, giving him his 4th kill of this raid.
The lone bomber reaches London but does no damage due to Heavy AA over the target city.
2:	Remix. 5 plane raid at Angels 15.
The RAF does not scramble with only 1 aircraft. The Raid hits the Rye radar chain unopposed and does 3 points of damage.
5:	Remix. No Raid.

Night:
Rebuild Hurricane and 1 point off the Rye radar chain. Palmer is called up from reserves and flies a Hurricane. Kowalski the Ace is put into reserve.

Notes:
In one day things have changed. The Germans damage a radar site, which will cause a delay in movement by 1 turn when a raid is sighted, but more importantly, they kill a RAF pilot and damage the plane. At least London is not damaged and I had one reserve pilot, Palmer, to call up.

August 18th
7:	5 plane raid at Angels 10.
Planes scramble to intercept. RAF intercepts out of the sun before they reach their target. Raid consists of 2 Me-109s with ace pilot and three bombers.
COMBAT
1st round:
Palmer, in his Hurricane and on his first combat mission, shoots down one ME-109 in the first pass getting his first kill.
The Spitfire is unable to get a shot off on the ace Me-109.
The enemy ace pilot out maneuvers the Spitfire and manages one hit on it causing damage to the frame. It is not serious, but will cause some performance negatives for the rest of the combat. Both RAF fighters keep up the attack.
2nd round: Combat Continues
Again, the now damaged Spitfire cannot get a shot off on the ace. This does allow Palmer in his Hurricane to get bead and shoots down the ace 109 for his 2nd kill.
The chatter of thanks can be heard among the swear words from Clisby’s Spitfire.
3rd round: Combat Continues
Bombers are unable to break contact. Clisby in his Spitfire, which is slightly damaged, settles behind a D0 17 riddling it with bullets sending it down and achieving ace status. The Hurricane follows suit and fires its last burst at another Do 17 and hits the rear gunner. Return fire from the enemy causes no damage. Hurricane must break off as it is out of ammo.
4th round: Combat Continues
Damaged, the Spitfire decides to fly with Palmer back to the base so they break of contact. This leaves one Me-110 to finish off the raid, doing two points of damage to the airfield Redhill.
10:Remix. No Raid
2:	6 plane raid at angels 10.
The RAF scrambles but does not intercept the Germans before they bomb Hawkinge for 3 damage (Damage to radar chain delays one turn). The Luftwaffe is able to retreat safely before the RAF can catch up.
5:	5 plane raid at angels 10.
Scramble to intercept (again, after one turn) the Germans hit the Dunkirk Radar doing 2 points of damage before the RAF can get there.
Eager to start a fight the RAF intercepts.
Combat
Both RAF pilots fail their performance checks and do not get a shot off, thus leaving a very tense moment for the RAF player (me).
The German fighters are also unable to pass their performance check and no combat damage is dealt to either side in one full round of combat. (almost unheard of in this game)
2nd round: Combat Continues
Clisby in his Spitfire relies on his experience and kills the pilot of 109 for his 6th kill. The Hurricane hits a Me 110 and damages the engine and pilot. the 110 is able to disengage and eventually makes it back to France.
3rd round: Combat Continues
With no fighter cover the Germans are easy prey. Clisby guides his Spitfire in on a Ju88 and rifles it with four hits sending to the sea for yet another kill. Palmer attacks a Do 17 and damages it, but it also breaks off and makes it home safely.
4th round: Combat is broken
The lone German bomber breaks engagement and heads for home.

Night:
Remove 2 points off Redhill Airfield.

Notes:
Well, I did finally get an Ace before the end of the short game, but the Germans are able to hit The Redhill and Hawkinge airfields, while also damaging the Dunkirk radar station.

Conclusion:
The game ended up being a lot closer that I had thought 14 to11 for the RAF. Despite the great efforts of the RAF pilots the Germans had closed the gap on the last day, almost catching up.

I really do like this game and wish I had more time for the longer campaign. I think my strategy worked out pretty well as I had enough kills and kept from my pilots from being KIA early on. Also, I enjoy the chit pulling system the game employs. I'm not so sure if I could have sustained the effort for the full campaign, but then at some point the weather would have gone bad giving me more time to repair.

If you are inclined to be interested to this period in history, I recommend you pick this up and give a go.

- Ron

Great session report! However, you screwed yourself unnecessarily on the Wednesday the 14th raid. You drew a remix counter which plays as a No Raid. Therefore, you should have remixed and gone straight to the night phase to spend your repair points and have both pilots rested and ready for Thursday the 15th.

Many thanks for your reply Steve and muchas gracias, Antonio!

I will play again, and most probably the long campaign...

Additionally, thank you, Antonio, for the tip on holding back from the five bandit force... (It's shocking how much common sense disappears at the game board!) In fact, when I think about it, I could have easily held back and let them bomb their target, pouncing only if they'd turned out to be a quantity of bombers. I think I got caught up in the whole "I must hit every Jerry plane. I can't afford to allow them to drop one more bomb!"
