you can see it as a challenge, repairing it.
for example - if the terminator arms cant be removed and re glued in possition you can cut them as they are from the shoulder - and glue them as you want. the same can be done with the terminator bases.

its actually quite an expirience to try and repair a broken boardgame.

for my space hulk copy i went out and bought some boxes of GW genestealers since i have lost some of them in the previous years.

Never feel bad about making sure you understand a rule. There are a lot of great games out there, but not a lot of great rulebooks.

ACK ACK wrote:
1) In Overwatch will a Space Marine fire every time a G'Stealer moves or every time a Stealer expends an AP? The rules state that a Marine fires every time a Stealer makes an action... I suppose my particular question is about a 90-degree turn. This costs no AP for the Stealer player; does it also provide an Overwatch-fire opportunity?

Yes, you fire. Keep in mind that turning 90 degrees is a "free" action but it is still an action. This is a vital component to Overwatch.

Also remember that all Terminators on Overwatch HAVE to fire. So if you have 2 Overwatch'ing Terminators covering the same square, and a 'Stealer moves in that square, they both have to fire. So if the first Terminator rolls the needed 6 to kill, you sill have to roll for the other to see if his bolter jams.

ACK ACK wrote:
2) The missions state the number of blips that start lurking off-board and the number of blips the Stealer player receives each turn as reinforcements. To begin the Stealer player's first turn does he or she receive those reinforcements?

Yes indeed!

I've done my own set of SH, so I might clarify some things. I used the new Terminator and genestealer models - they are bigger than the old ones, but the bases are not really an issue, as each Terminator set comes with standard, small bases along with the big ones (You can see a picture of one Blood Angels squad on those small bases here).

Also, be sure to check the alternative doors, overwatch and command counters available on one of the SH sites (I'll have to find the address - I don't remember where I found them). Here's a picture of the counters, and the doors can be seen here.

Reminds me of a project our game club did waay back in 2003....

http://www.lvgamersclub.com/events/gdla2003.php

Scroll down to see pics of our 3d Space hulk table. 6x8. We had aboutr 100 Genestealers and we had 9 squads of terminators, each painted as a different chapter. Most of the construction was done by Robert Scheel, a club member, and the idea for the light up encounter markers was his. Some folks at GW were so impressed they borrowed some of our markers to take back for a game in Baltimore and they gave us a pre-release Cadian codex I think.

I would say use the new plastic termies but base them on 28mm bases. Or if you can find the old plastic termies they work great. Any Genestealers will do.

Or do I really need to get the termies?

You can of course use any figures you wish in the Terminators role.

Macragge wont do it if its regular marines you want though I am afraid. Its a great box set but even though it is cheap it still only has 10 marines (I think) and 6 'stealers. Additionally, while the Macragge Marines are cool they will be a little difficult to convert into some of the more esoteric weapon fits due to the way they are manufactured and assembled.

Probably better to buy a 10 man Tac squad, it would be easier to play with the weapon fits. Instead of an assault squad I would be inclined to pick up Space Wolf Grey Hunters box. The assault squads come with huge jump packs that might look a bit weird in SH. A Magragge/Black reach box plus Wolf Guard might be the way to go perhaps.
That would give you enough bits and pieces to make most of the figure types that you want Id say.
Some cheap Wizkids Battletech 'mechs could provide good guns to make the heavy weapons that you will be missing.

Alternatively you could simply buy a whole heap of Heroclix HDC Troopers (or other similar Hero/Horrorclix) and you would have a bunch of pre-painted Marines more or less ready to go.

I am in the process of getting a set of alternate "Aliens" figures ready for Space Hulk too, using the aforementioned Wizkids Horrorclix Aliens. For the Marines I am using the plastic figures available (again) from EM4 miniatures.

They are reasonably cheap, have a variety of suitable weapon fits and best of all look quite like the Colonial Marines from Aliens.

(I would link to a picture but, being at work I cant get at the site)

If I were you and less concerned with the exact figures used I would go for those personally. If you depart from the Space Hulk/GW theme a little then you might as well go the whole way and Aliens-ify it IMO.

Additionally it gave me an excuse to get a "Ripley" figure...
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/pack.php?pack=684

and a "Newt"...
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/pack.php?pack=792

I am getting a small bit off topic here perhaps but anyway...
Just an idea (but depends on your budget of course),
i'm using not the original Genstealer, i prefer "Aliens" which you
could find painted (and with 7 different figure creations) from WizKids.

In every "Aliens Collector Set" you'll find 7 different Aliens.
So quantity depends on you. (3 Sets = 21 Aliens, 4 Sets = 28 Aliens, eo...)
It depends on you if you want to change in addition the bases (from WIZKIDS Bases to regular tabletop bases) and maybe the sculpts as well (some Aliens sitting on the top of a stone-column, but looks very nice).
Have look on the WizKids site.

Of course, you could mix Genstealers and Aliens...

If you choose this as an option, look at the "Predators Collection Set" too, and you could use a "squad" of Predators instead!

Michael

I'm home-brewing it, and have the rule book, and the map sections/doors all complete.

Thats a seriously good start! Making the boards is the most troublesome bit IMO, it should be easier from now on.

sshawmd wrote:
I need some help about minis... I dont mind spending a decent amount

The ability to spend a fair bit helps a lot in these circumstances

I am currently ressurecting my Space Hulk stuff. After taking a look at the scenarios from the expansions and from White Dwarf the following mix covers just about everything (excluding "Genestealer"). The figures that I went with are as follows:

Terminator Marines

Standard Squad x2
(Each squad has 1 Sergeant, 1 Flamer Marine and 3 Marines)

2 Chainfist Marine
2 Assault Cannon Marine

2 Lighning Claw Marine
2 Thunder Hammer Marine

1 Captain

4 Librarians

I think that that covers pretty much everything. If it doesnt and a scenario demands something off the wall like 3 or 4 Lighning Claw marines I will sub in similar marines rather than paint guys who will almost never get used (Thunder Hammer = Lightning Claw for the above examples purposes).

It is probably a bit excessive really but I am lucky enough to have most of the figures in storage for years anyway so I might as well paint them now.

The Librarians max out at two for scenarios that do not use Genestealer I am pretty sure so maybe you can leave those out or simply get one total. The "Genestealer" supplement psychic rules are a step too far in many peoples eyes anyway (mine included) so it may not be a big loss to you.

Genestealers

24 Genestealers

24 covers all basic 'stealer requirements for any game, excluding games frome the "Genestealer" supplement.
If you wish to include any and all Hybrid 'stealer variations you are up to over 30 models. Good luck with that if you try it, and if you do then please post some photos!

Purchases

The current plastic Genstealer box set contains 8 figs so three boxes of those is a no-brainer.

2 x Terminator Squad box set and
1 x Terminator Assault Squad box set
That will get you 15 terminators (more than is used in any one scenario I am pretty sure).

You will then have enough extra arms to make all of the above figures but if you wish to make ALL of them you will require a couple more Marine bodies. If money is not an object then I would suggest buying another box of either of the above sets so that you can have the whole lot assembled. Thats a lot of cash though (~€160 plus the cost of the 'stealers)!

It is possible to make a Terminator Marine Captain using the parts from the above sets quite easily. On the other hand you might prefer to simply buy a metal Terminator Captain and Terminator Librarian (or two) to round out the force.

Battle for Macragge
This box contains 6 Genestealers and does not contain any Terminators. It is not a good purchase for Space Hulk. BfM is superceded soon (this week maybe?) by...

Battle for Black Reach
This box contains 5 terminators, (including a Sergeant I think). While it looks like a cool set and has lot of fun stuff in it, it isnt really a good purchase if Space Hulk is your focus.

sshawmd wrote:
Lastly -- counters. What do I need, how many, and whats a good resource?

For 1st ed Space Hulk you will need the following:

10 Overwatch counters
www.em4miniatures.com sells cheap bags of tiddlywinks that I use for lots of games. They have some that have a different colour on each side that do nicely as overwatch counters (one side represents Overwatch and the other a Jammed Weapon)

12 Flamer markers and 20 Assault Cannon ammo
I use poker chips for these, red for the flamer obv
Cheap, accessible, durable and practical.

? x Blips
I cant remember how many of these are required but again green tiddlywinks with the number written/printed on the underside would do very well I think. The spread of numbers used is available some where in the games BGG entry (I cant remember exactly where right now).

6 x Command Point Counters
In my experience most people roll a dice under a cup for this. I suggest that you either do the same or else see my solution to everything (tiddlywinks) above.

1 x C.A.T.
This is an objective for a scenario. Any counter that you choose will do for that to be honest.

There are some other counters used in "Deathwing" (Ambush Counters, maybe some others) but they wont be necessary for a while really I think.

Phew, that went on for a bit longer than intended. I hope that it helps!

Space Hulk does not use the standard Space Marine codex organization. A expanded (from the base game) Terminator Force List is part of the Space Hulk - Deathwing Expansion and Space Hulk Campaigns provides a force list for Space Marines in power armour. A White Dwarf expansion also provided an abbreviated list for Grey Knight Terminators. However, I was never able to discern the algorithm for how GW costed-out the various units of the force lists.

I would like to be able to play with any expansions, in terms of marine weapons, so I dont know exactly what to buy (just 2 typical 5-man squads? 1 sarg, one heavy, and 3 bolters?) -- and it certainly seems like anything on the market now doesnt quite fit. Should I get more than the basic 10 so that we can vary squads/expansions? I dont mind spending a decent amount, so any ideas about mixing/matching 2 sets are welcome. Tyranids -- are they easier? Just get 20 and paint?

Lastly -- counters. What do I need, how many, and whats a good resource? Thanks a lot!! I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Genestealers are genestealers. You can just buy a box and go to town; although, some folks don't like the newer sculpts [more "Giger/Alien-esque"] versus the older [I find the originals campy, but that's a matter of personal taste].

I think the 1st and 2nd ed rules change the way your marine force would/can be composed. As far as the marines go, the newer Terminator sculpts are a fair bit bigger than the old and use the larger round bases, which don't fit on the SH maps. There are some posts in the SH forums about rebasing the newer scupts on the older bases for use with SH. And the new Termies are really nice looking, so it might be worth going that route. That said, you can find auctions for older metal Termies in the right scale now and again. You'll need a Sarge or two and, if you're planning on the expansions, at least 1 Librarian [1st ed. Genestealer expansion I think was the one that introduced the psykers]. Beyond that, flamers, bolters, and powerfists/claws. For regular space marines [introduced in Deathwing and SH Campaign I think--it's been a while though], I think any ol' box of marines will do as you should get a broad range of weapons and enough marines to do the job.

As I think of it, the "Battle for Macragge" starter box might actually give you enough stealers and regular space marines for your other needs--but I don't recall how many [if any] Terminators are in the set. You'll probably need separate box to round out the numbers you'll need. I haven't played with all the expansions, but I *think* 10 termies plus a couple of sarges and a librarian is enough.

Thread: Re: Flamer Strategy

The flamer is the most important member of your squad. It is essential to advance quickly because of the way it can be used to both clear stealers (including ones out of LOS) out of rooms and hold flanks or block stealer entrance points to allow terminators with stormbolters time to navigate through the more complex sections of maps without being flooded and killed.

Your point about board section is valid but does not really limit the uses of the flamer. It just means that the flamer is usually used in conjuction with regular terminators. The flamer advances up to the edge of a board section and flames it. Next turn when the flames burn out the flamer equipped marine moves out of the way of the storm bolter armed marine(s) who then secure the area using overwatch. The flamer is then positioned for the next advance.

The first mission can be a good example of how a flamer can be used to facilitate a rapid advance. I have found that the most consistent strategy for completing this mission uses the flamer to open a path to the objective.

Thread: Re: Best Scenario?

I'd disagree - DEFEND was always overbalanced in favour of the marines. And they basically just sit there on overwatch for the whole game. Mission 4 (CLEANSE AND BURN) was a great, nicely balanced scenario with the first edition rules.

Thread: Re: Flamer Strategy

You can spend Command Points to fire a flamer on the stealers’ turn if you see them perform an action, all normal flamer rules apply. Also, you can self-destruct the flamer unit and it destroys all models and doors including the flamer on one board section. If you use the expansions you can buy extra ammo too. If you still don’t like the flamers try using the 2nd edition flamer rules with 1st edition. I feel the 2nd edition flamer rules makes them overpowered but if you like them use them.

My first thought was the lasgun, too.
But under the weapon description the to hit number is 2.
At this point I was confused, because if the to hit number is 2 the sniper action is pretty useless, so I thought I've overlooked something.
But now it's clear, the weapon chart has the right stats for the lasgun.

-Chris

IIRC, they are simply lasguns. However, as they are snipers, they can spend X Action Points to increase their 'to hit' roll +1 per X.

Hi,

I've just read through the 'Space Hulk Bible' and discovered the rules
for Ratling Snipers, but I cannot find the weapon stats for the
sniper rifles.
Thread: Re: Antennae / Ariels

That would be a personal taste decision. You could keep one for each squad of five as the sergeant, he needs to keep control of his squad and would be the most logical reason to keep it on. I like the nub version, that way they have their antennas but you will have less repairs in the futures.

I like the antennas but have removed them from my old school termies as they will break off eventually. But I rework them quite a bit too. I replace the block plactic storm-bolter with a home made on with space marine bolters. I also remove the power fist and replace it with a space marine power fist too. So my older termies don’t look so blocky. A lot of work but I like the modeling aspect of this hobby.

As for keeping the value for E-Bay, don't model your force for later resale. Besides, these older terminators armored space marines won't get you rich... Not many people like them and most I know have replaced them with the new leads or plastic termies. Those who play 40K probably would not by them anyway, just us nostalgic Hulk players.

Hope this helps!
Jim P
